According to a study, the effects could be morethan previously believed. It may lead to changes in theway scientists estimate climate change.The study, published in the journal, NatureCommunications, noted that changes in the planet'sgeology caused the largest temporary globalwarming of the past 65 million years.The researchers, including those from the Universityof Birmingham in the UK, said one such role inclimate change could be played by Large IgneousProvinces (LIPs), extremely large accumulations ofrocks forming when magma travelled through thecrust towards the surface.They created a model of changes in carbon emissionsduring the Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum(PETM) - a short interval of maximum temperaturelasting around 100,000 years some 55 million years ago.As part of the study, the researchers calculated thegreenhouse gas fluxes associated with the North AtlanticIgneous Province (NAIP) - one of Earth's largest LIPsthat spans Britain, Ireland, Norway and Greenland.
