HOW’S THE WATER?

Turning Green Technology Into Greenbacks With the rising cost of R22, the prospect of new Department of Energy Efficiency Standards, and the high cost of energy bills, now is the time to talk to your customers about upgrading to newer, higher-efficiency HVAC systems. Many homeowners are concerned about the high cost of keeping their homes comfortable throughout the summer and beyond, as well as the potential impact on the environment.

“Ductless? I didn’t even know you could do that.” Ductless HVAC systems continue to grow in popularity nationwide, leading to a higher demand for contractors who install ductless systems – and the trend is only just beginning. With more homeowners becoming aware of the great benefits of ductless HVAC systems, adding ductless systems to your product

offerings is a fast track to success this summer. “These units can be installed for less man hours per ton than unitary systems,” said HVAC consultant Richard Harshaw of Lodestar Consulting Systems in a recent issue of ACHR The News. “With their slightly higher price tags, the material-to-labor ratio on ductless split jobs often exceeds the unitary money-to-labor ratio by a large factor, sometimes in the hundreds of percents.” Contractors aren’t the only ones who benefit from the increased interest in ductless systems. While most of us in the HVAC industry are well aware of the benefits of ductless systems, many consumers are surprised and delighted at how easily these systems can be installed. Just the simple fact that their homes can be retrofitted with an air conditioning system without the added cost of extensive ductwork can be a helpful sales tool when first contacting a homeowner. Consumers are also finding that ductless units allow for lower energy costs, as ductless systems allow the consumerto cool or heat spaces that are actually occupied, rather than wasting energy on areas in the home that aren’t highly used. Due to their high efficiency levels, ductless split systems are also eligible for many local utility rebates, putting some extra cash in your customers’ pockets.

Shining Like Diamonds Speaking of ductless systems, Mitsubishi Electric’s Diamond Contractor program, together with the unparalleled support of ABCO, is designed to help your business soar. Get marketing assistance, priority Dealer Locator website listings, and even leads from consumers who want to be contacted.

Look for Jerry Stiller in the new Mitsubishi television campaign, as well as a new consumer website where your

customers can learn more about how ductless systems can keep them comfortable all year long– and save them money on their energy costs. Mitsubishi Electric is putting more money into this new campaign than any manufacturer in the business, meaning even greater awareness of advanced, multi-zone ductless solutions. ABCO and Mitsubishi have taken the campaign a step further, launching a local radio campaign for regional ductless HVAC dealers and contractors, as well as a regional ductless dealer locator at ductlessoffer.com.

It looks like it’s going to be fine. The HVAC industry is continuing to grow steadily. While new residential construction still hasn’t returned to pre-2008 levels, the latest reportsfrom the National Association of Home Builders and the US Department of Housing and Urban Development show an increase in new home construction permits. The cool waters of the economy are warming up, at least according to Andrew Duguay, senior economist with the Institute of Trend Research. As reported in the recent edition of ACHR The News, Duguay addressed HARDI members on March 12 to give them a regional and national report on the economy. Duguay said that the last HARDI TRENDS report, which covered the entire year of 2011, saw a 2.9 percent increase in

sales on a national scale. HARDI’s western region saw a 2.7 percent increase in sales. “The future is brighter,”said Duguay. The Institute of Trend Research is predicting that the economy will continue to grow through 2012 and 2013. Clues to the economic recovery, according to Duguay, include stabilizing home prices and growth in the housing market. The institute found that the housing market grew 11.4 percent in 2011. Private sector employment is also rising and “that’s the trend we want to watch,” said Duguay.

Gear up for the season with solutions and services to help your business thrive.

THE FUTURE OF R-22.RULES, PHASE OUT AND SOLUTIONS.

ABCO, MANUFACTURERS AND CUSTOMERS COME TOGETHER ON THE FUTURE OF R-22.

As you know, the recent proposal from the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) has had a dramatic effect on the price and availability of R-22. Which is why ABCO strives to keep you informed with Refrigerant Updates, flyers, emails, handy pocket guides and even classes.

Recently, ABCO held classes on the future of R-22 at our Baltimore/ Washington DC and Boston branches. Turnouts were big because the classes included useful information about rules, phase out and solutions. Thanks to our valued relationships with our manufacturers, three leaders in the industry were guest speakers in Boston: Mark Love from DuPont, Pat Gibbons from Bohn and Frank Russell from Emerson. They provided a wide range of alternative refrigerant solutions, including MO99™.

Known as the “easy fix,” MO99 is the most versatile R-22 replacement refrigerant in DuPont’s ISCEON® family of non-ozone-depletingrefrigerants. It’s an easy retrofit for both refrigeration and commercial air conditioning applications. It doesn’t even require an oil change. In most cases, all that needs to be done is recover the R-22, replace critical seals, charge refrigerant, restart and monitor for leaks, and you’re done. Replacing R-22 can’t get any easier.

We’ll continue to hold classes and keep you up-to-speed, so keep a lookout for more information. You see, everything we do is designed to help you continue to do business as smoothly as possible and succeed in these challenging times.

For more information about R-22 and practical solutions, please contact your Sales Account Manager or ABCO Branch Team.
