The Old Multidisciplinary ARCSS Components

• OAII – Ocean Atmosphere Ice Interactions:

(NEW, IWA, AOS, SHEBA, SBI, SEARCH)

• LAII – Land Atmosphere Ice Interactions:

(Flux, ITEX, ATLAS)

• Paleoenvironmental studies (GISP2, PALE, PARCS)

• HARC – Human dimensions of the Arctic

system.

• RAISE – Russian American Initiative on Shelf-

The New Thematic ARCSSThe New Thematic ARCSS

• Future of decadal-scale environmental change;

• Ecosystem-human interactions with change;

• Biogeochemical cycles and feedbacks;

• Hydrological cycle and feedbacks;

• Detecting change.

What ARCSS is notWhat ARCSS is not

• It is not the arctic climate program

• It is not the arctic interdisciplinary program

• It is not the system science program

• It is not the arctic career funding program

• It generally is not the small project program

• It is not the fund anything that appears in a science plan program

• Coordinated, Interdisciplinary, Arctic system approach• SSCs, SMOs, SPOs provide management:

– ~Annual coordination meetings, future planning, outreach, assist with data compliance, promote increasing national andinternational partnerships.

• ADCC serves as permanent data archive.• UCAR Joint Office of Science Support (JOSS):

– Operational and/or project level data management;– Transfer data into ADCC archive.

• AC promotes integration and outreach activities:– Annual meetings of ARCSS leadership;– All Hands Workshop in 2002.

How are ARCSS projects supported?

How are ARCSS projects supported?

• ARCSS works with SSCs and AC to identify large-scale science opportunities with ARCSS goals:- Solicitation is published by NSF that reflects advice given;

- Proposals reviewed for meritorious science, outreach and potential for project synergy;

- PIs of well-reviewed proposals meet to establish the synergy derived from coordination (i.e. sum is

greater than the parts).• About 10% of funds directed to unsolicited projects.

• Compliance with data policy and NSF outreach goals are heavily stressed if project is to continue

• Disciplinary-only focus

• Platform-specific focus

• Site-specific focus

• Technique-specific focus

• Absence of future-focus

• With a me-first focus
