Archroma, a global leader in colorand specialty chemicals, announced today that its ArchromaColor Management service busi-ness has partnered with the FashionInstitute of Technology (FIT) and itsTextile Development and MarketingDepartment to create the firstArchroma Color Center. TheArchroma Color Center @FIT is afacility where FIT students can uti-lize leading-edge industry colormanagement tools for their designprojects, gaining hands-on expert-ise that equips them for successfulcareers in the fashion and textilesindustries.

FIT students designed the space underthe direction of Sean Cormier, an associ-ate professor at the college’s TextileDevelopment and Marketing program.Key components for the room weredonated by Archroma.

The Archroma Color Center @FITincludes a large-scale color referencethat recreates the 4,320 hue Color Atlasby Archroma® as a wall-hung, flip-through display. A complete six-setColor Atlas - featuring an easy-to-usesystem of detachable fabric swatches -has also been donated to the lab, whichstudents use to select hues for theirdesign projects. Colors from the physical

Color Atlas library are easily found usingthe cutting edge online Color Searchtool. A set of color design tools repre-senting each shade in Color Atlas hasalso been donated for students to incor-porate into their individual class presen-tations.

Students use the Color Atlas as aguide in developing color stories for vari-ous projects that are done in the FIT tex-tile program, including a ‘color pitching’assignment where they must create twonew colorways, one warm and one cool, for a chosen print. Students are also askedto use the library to research colors, thenthey dye sample fabrics and matchingtrim materials. The students also use theon-line color matching system, visitingretail stores where they spot trends andcapture color info on their phones.Students have asked to use color chipsfrom the Center for projects they have inother classes, like product development,or for developing mood boards for voca-tional club presentations.

“It’s key that FIT students not onlygraduate with the theoretical knowledgeabout how our industry works, but thatthey are exposed to the most advanceddesign libraries, tools, software andequipment,” says Sean Cormier. “WithArchroma’s generous donation of materi-als, our students are actually using andbecoming familiar with a modern colorselection system that they will encounterwhen they walk into the marketplaceafter graduation.”
