FROM THE CHAIRMAN AND THE PRINCIPAL

The pride of Old Scotch Collegians in their School has provided a sound foundation for the Scotch College we see today. The friendships of schooldays encourage a lasting awareness of how much the quality of our lives owes to the experiences of our youth.

At Scotch these experiences encompass the values of the Chapel and Memorial Hall, where we reflect on the meaning of our lives. We recall the camaraderie of the ‘Hill’, the integrity of the classroom, the inspiration and curiosity inspired by outstanding teachers, the teamwork and sportsmanship of the playing field, the self-discipline of music, the patriotism and civic responsibility of cadets and community service, and the personal responsibility we show in respecting each other and living ethical, decent lives.

The School’s Museum and Archives have become a treasure-house of memories: of the School’s Scottish heritage, of uniforms, trophies, prizes, magazines and journals, photographs and irreplaceable records. These enrich each of us more and more as the years go by, as each generation adds its contributions, records and achievements.

OSCA House will provide facilities the OSCA community has long needed to properly service its diverse and growing membership; a place where Old Boys and current representatives can meet, take inspiration from the School’s history, and help to plan its future.

As our founder the Rev. James Forbes wrote, a sound education must combine knowledge and principle. An institution that remembers and values its past has a strong basis on which to move confidently into the future. Standing on sure ground, it develops the ability to embrace the new. Scotch has always done this, and the developments being planned here will be an embodiment of the Scotch way of doing things.

We urge your support for these important initiatives.

ABOUT THE PROJECT

The present Archives and Museum facilities at Scotch do not safely protect and appropriately display the School’s 167 years of history. The School’s collection contains many unique items, including Scotch Registers dating from 1857 to 1997, an exquisitely illustrated 1858 exercise book containing a Scotch boy’s Science notes, Scotch’s earliest surviving blazer (more than 110 years old), some (pre-politically correct) school reports, and thousands of photographs.

The Ramsay Collection, bequeathed to Scotch by Old Boy Sir Thomas Ramsay (‘24), contains priceless items such as a 1771 letter by Captain James Cook (and his barometer), Matthew Flinders’ personally- inscribed Observations, the prosecutor’s brief in the trial of Ned Kelly, and more than 20,000 other items collectively detailing the history of Australasia and the Pacific Rim.

The addition of a new fireproof vault behind No. 3 Morrison Street will secure the entire collection. Permanent visual histories of Scotch, of the Old Scotch Collegians’ Association (OSCA) and of Victoria’s Scottish heritage will adorn the walls of the museum, and will be complemented by displays of items that can be rotated throughout the school year, utilising a range of traditional displays and modern technology.

Extended work spaces for the Archivist and volunteers will enable them to efficiently catalogue items, collections and files so critical to the School and its journey. They will also be accessible to members of the general public who wish to conduct research. A teaching space will allow current students to hear stories of the past as they make their own path through the School.

The meeting room will be a much-needed additional facility for meetings both during and after school hours. The Old Scotch Collegians’ Association Council, Old Scotch clubs and affiliated societies’ committees and the Victorian Scottish Heritage Cultural Foundation Board will be able to host meetings in this purpose-built room, which will offer audio-visual and catering facilities.

OSCA House will be a new home for the OSCA Executive Director and staff, and will provide support for the Victorian Scottish Heritage Cultural Foundation. The facility will include a reading room and work spaces for Old Boys to drop in and conduct research, read the paper, have a coffee, and enjoy a chat. The facility will better allow OSCA to deliver its mission of supporting the School and its Old Boys. The OSCA Gallery of 100 influential Old Boys will be included in the house.

This project will raise the profile of OSCA and its clubs and affiliated societies, and the Victorian Scottish Heritage Cultural Foundation.

HISTORY OF ARCHIVES AT SCOTCH

At the time of the School’s 1911 Diamond Jubilee, there was a real interest in Scotch’s history, and photographs and recollections were sent to Scotch by Old Boys. A museum was started that year, and although it held a variety of non-Scotch curios, it also contained Scotch items. It was partially disbanded in 1954, and was scattered to the four winds in 1961.

From 1982 OSCA’s Archives committee became increasingly insistent that something should be done about creating an Archives at Scotch. Geoff Tolson (‘39) was appointed as the inaugural Archivist in 1985 and, by scrounging around in Scotch’s myriad nooks and crannies, and advertising in The Age, The Weekly Times and Great Scot, he collated, received, stored and displayed the core of the Archives’ collection by the time he retired in 1992.

Dick Briggs (‘57) oversaw the move from the Archives’ World War II building in Morrison Street into No. 2 Morrison Street, as well as receiving and commencing cataloguing of the Ramsay Collection. Jim Mitchell’s (‘64) service overlapped that of Dick, during which he expanded the Archives into No. 3 Morrison Street, added an extension onto No. 2 Morrison Street, authored the School’s sesquicentenary history A Deepening Roar, and set up a valuable compactus system.

The current Archivist, Paul Mishura, continues the work of his predecessors in bringing order to an enormous and ever-growing collection of records and artefacts, as well as responding to innumerable internal and external requests for information, and helping to use the Archives’ resources for the benefit of Scotch in all of its activities.

THIS BUILDING, LOCATED ON MORRISON STREET, HOUSED THE ORIGINAL ARCHIVES (EASTERN END), ALONG WITH OSCA AND THE DEVELOPMENT OFFICE, (WESTERN END).

PROJECT TIMINGS

Pending City of Boroondara planning approval, it is hoped that these works will commence in the final quarter of 2018 to be ready for use by mid-2019.

PROJECT COSTThe project is estimated to cost $2m. Of this, $1m has been committed by the School, and the Scotch College Development Office now seeks to raise $1m to bring this vision to reality.

Tax deductible donations can be made to the Scotch College Archive-Museum Fund.

HOW YOU CAN HELP

This project will strike a chord with the entire Scotch Family. While we spend much of our time supporting new developments, it is critical we keep a ‘keen but loving eye’ on where we have come from. As Melbourne’s oldest surviving secondary school, the opportunity to safely house and display our history is well overdue and I look forward to the

completion of this development. Settling OSCA into this redeveloped precinct is an added incentive.

Having said that, it will take a significant contribution from us to bring this project to fruition and I urge you to join me in supporting it, continuing the strong tradition of philanthropy which underpins our great School.
