Parallel Cities examines the history of the multilevel city with a focus on elevated pedestriansystems as a recurrent concept in urban planning and design. The book chronicles the evolutionand migration of this concept from 19th-century French social utopian thinkers and 20th-centurySoviet Constructivist architectural circles to its incubation in postwar London, its theorization bymembers of CIAM and Team 10, and its eventual dissemination to North America and Asia, where extensive systems were built in cities such as Minneapolis, Calgary and Hong Kong. Thisfascinating and untold history explores an architectural idea as it evolves under varying social, geographic and political contexts—charting its use as an ever-shifting multipurpose tool tosegregate or commingle the classes, foster social cohesion and the public good, facilitate securityand surveillance, improve pedestrian safety and traffic flows, or to enhance retail consumption byameliorating climatic extremes. The implementation of streets above streets creates parallel

cities, not mirrored but alternate realities where questions about access, use and control emerge. The book considers both radical visionary schemes of the future urban metropolis by progressivearchitects and the grand, if visually more mundane, implementation plans of extensive networksbuilt in cities around the world that engender what the authors call a surreptitious urbanism. Thefirst and only comprehensive book on the subject, Parallel Cities represents important newscholarly research on a topic that remains a persistent theme in architecture and urban planning.

Accompanying the extensively illustrated text is a lexicon of related terms and an appendix ofspecific systems drawn from key cities.

Disorientation: Bernard Rudofsky in the Empire of Signs. Critical Spatial Practice 7Sternberg Press 2016 ISBN 9783956791871 Acqn 25953Pb 11x15cm 144pp 25ills 7col £11.50

Edited by Nikolaus Hirsch, Markus MiessenFeaturing artwork by Martin Beck

Viennese émigré architect Bernard Rudofsky (1905–1988) is most frequently recalled for curating“Architecture without Architects,” the famous 1964 photography exhibition of vernacular, preindustrial structures at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Far from simply a romantic ornostalgic invocation of cultures lost to industrial modernity, Rudofsky’s exhibition drew ondecades of speculations about modern architecture and urbanism, particularly their semantic, technological, institutional, commercial, and geopolitical influences.

Focusing on Rudofsky’s encounters with Japan in the 1950s—he described postwar Japan as a“rear-view mirror” of the American way of life—architectural historian Felicity D. Scott revisits thearchitect’s readings of the vernacular both in the United States and Japan, which resonate withhis attempts to imagine architecture and cities that refused to communicate in a normative sense. In a contemporary world saturated with visual information, Rudofsky’s unconventional musingstake on a heightened resonance.

In the emergent economies, the acute shortage of affordable housing is responsible for a giganticbuilding production, which is not without its problems. Standard solutions are applied on a largescale that seem to bypass local cultural practices. The import in Africa of mass housing modelsfrom abroad is an example of this.'DASH Global Housing' explores the field of tension between the desired mass production andsolutions that are tailored to local conditions. How can new megacities do justice to existing social

and economic structures, local production techniques and individual housing preferences?

'OASE 95' takes as its point of departure the cross-cultural conditions in which architects, urbandesigners and landscape architects work. It focuses in particular on architects working in acondition of displacement – in other words in relation to cultures, far away or nearby, that are nottheir own. The issue wants to contribute to the contemporary debate on the effects ofglobalisation and transcultural processes on architecture and urbanism. In a typical OASEfashion, it combines historical analysis with contemporary reflection and project documentation.

In Europe, the period of great economic and demographic growth is largely over. The physicalgrowth of our urban agglomerations has come to an end. The spatial assignment of the future

European city will be fundamentally different. Building new space outside the city boundaries isno longer necessary. Instead, what exists should be made sustainable. The new spatialassignment involves maintaining, restructuring, densifying or diluting the existing city. Thispublication analyses this development and describes a toolbox that is able to turn the newassignment into a success.

Associated in ancient times with religious legends – the Tower of Babel –, the vertical myth founda new and no less powerful version in the enormous corporate buildings of the 20th century. Butin today's New York the old myth takes on an unforeseen form: that of soaring and unbelievablyslender skyscrapers containing apartments with spectacular views of Central Park, and soexpensive that only the global oligarchy can afford them.
