Over the last two decades, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) has been urbanising at a fast pace, and rapidly changing its main economic activities from manufacture to services. In a country with a population that exceeds already 1,3 billion inhabitants, MMR alone (23 million inhabitants) contributes with a third of India’s taxes. This studio invites the participants to explore design solutions to tackle the social and spatial challenges triggered by the rapid urbanisation of MMR. The studio will focus in particular on the development of inclusive dwelling communities in Navi Mumbai, a planned satellite city of Mumbai, designed in the early 1970s by Charles Correa. The studio will stimulate the participants to investigate morphological, typological and technological solutions to address the phenomenon of social and spatial inequality that is pervasive in Mumbai Metropolitan Region. The participants in this studio will be challenged to explore the potential of housing design to promote environmental, economic, and social sustainability. The design assignment will be focused on the development of a project for a residential sector in Navi Mumbai, critically confronting the 1970 Plan with the contemporary challenges in one of the World’s biggest metropolitan areas. Participants in this studio will join seminars with local housing experts and workshops with students and faculty of Mumbai’s KRVIA (Kamla Raheja Vidyanidhi Institute for Architecture and Environmental Studies). While some of these activities will be held remotely, if Covid-19 rules allow, a field trip to Mumbai can be organised during or immediately after Q2. The cost of the field trip is approximately €1.000,00 (return flight Amsterdam-Mumbai and accommodation in Mumbai). Each participant in the studio should support this cost.
