BLUE SPRINGS SHRINE CLUBBy Fred Harle, P.P.

They always say, “April Showers BringMay Flowers.” Well, here it is April 10th,haven’t seen much rain here in our greatcity of Blue Springs, MO, but you knowwhat, if you are like me those May flowersare already starting to bloom. You knowthe kind I’m talking about, those pretty lit-tle yellow flowers that we spend a smallfortune trying to eliminate from our yardevery year. Yep, they are called dande-lions. If you don’t have any I’ll be morethan happy to bring you some of the onesfrom my front yard. That is just before Itry to get rid of them.

Today Jennie’s brother Kenny and hisLady Emma who live in Warrensburg, MOdrove up to see us. We met at Bob Evan’sRestaurant in Lee’s Summit, after whichall four of us visited the Swap Meet. Wow,what a super extravaganza. An even big-ger surprise was to be greeted by Ill. SirKevin Sleyster and being chauffeured byour Recorder, Mike Wheeler. Upon enter-ing the rear gate we were greeted by thehardest working Shriner I know , NobleMac McWilliams. Try and keep up withthis Noble and you’ll find it’ s impossible. Thanks Mac for all that you do for Ararat.

Let me tell you about our March BSSCmeeting. To begin with, our meetings withNoble Bill Fickle at the helm just get bet-ter and better . Following the usual open -ing ceremonies for our Shrine Club, we getdown to the business of trying to catch thefatted calf so to speak. See picture of ourDivan Liaison Officer, 2nd CeremonialMaster Clarence Kirby followed by alegion of hungry Shriners. We also treatour ladies okay . Please note picture withladies, Carol Newport, Vivian Snell,Marguerite Merryman, and Pat Stansell.

Thank you ladies for continuing to shareBSSC with all the rest of us.

Our President, Bill Fickle arranged aspectacular program for our entertainment.Jordan Mitchell, a member of DeMolay, presented a Ceremony of Life in full form.Wow, super impressive, you could hear apin drop. What a treat to see and hear sucha talented young man.

We treat our dignitaries with respect, and it’s always a pleasure to put out the oldBSSC welcome mat for any and all templeofficers. Please don’t wait for a specialinvite. The door is always open and wewant you to come and join us. See photoof President Bill Fickle, 2nd CeremonialMaster Clarence Kirby, and AmbassadorBud Higginbotham.

Our good buddy Noble Lou Sohn hadsome stents inserted close to his heart andhe is progressing great. He heard aboutPast President Bill Clinton doing okaywith his so he got some.

Last, but also a very important part ofour BSSC team is Noble James Gar gotta. He puts together our club newsletter , sec-ond to none, that keeps all our membersinformed about what’s going to happen, and what has happened. Not only aboutanything and everything in and about ourclub, but other clubs, uniformed units, andour temple in general. If you don’t believeit come see for yourself! BSSC meets onthe 4th Monday night of each month at6:30 pm in the American Legion Buildingon 7 Hwy in Blue Springs, MO. Call us,we’ll tell you how to get here.

Hospital Van Drivers

If you are a member of Ararat Shrine you are encour-aged to call the Hospital Transportation Office (816) 923-5429 or (816) 923-1319 and become one of those men who transport our children to the St. Louis Hospital. This will be one of the most rewarding activities you will ever experience.

We encourage every man in Ararat to become a driv-er. It will require you to go to your State Driver’s License Office and obtain a copy of your driving record. As a matter of fact, all drivers need to bring their records up to date in this manner.

A big Thank You to the following Nobles who have driven the Hospital Van in the month of June.

Hospital Chairman Ed Stowell is seen at left, with the inside scoop on how recycling your old papers can help us provide transportation to the Shriners Hospitals for “our kids.” The

money that is received from recycling goes directly to our Hospital Patient Transportation Fund. Use the bright yellow and green paper retrievers in Ararat’s south parking lot. If you have any questions, call the Hospital Office: 816-923-1319.

DedicationThe members of the Hospital Committee wish to dedicate all our services for the balance of 2011 to the

memory of our dear friend and co-worker, Dave Bushakra. Dave was, and always will be, an inspiration to our group as well as all of Ararat. We hold Dave in the highest esteem and have only great memories of our associa-tion with him and Molly. He will be greatly missed by all, and will never be forgotten. We wish his family the best in this time of loss and we want them to know we are all with them in spirit.

News from Cincinnati

Brachial plexus injuries are often seen in sports injuries, car accidents, as well as in newborns. The injury oc-curs when the nerves in the shoulder area are stretched. Patients experi-ence a loss of movement and sensa-tion in the affected shoulder and arm area. If the injury is severe enough, a complete loss of function in the af-fected extremity is possible.

Shriners Hospitals for Children® – Cincinnati has reached out to help children with brachial plexus injuries. Some brachial plexus injuries will heal on their own, but when surgery is in-dicated, the pediatric plastic surgery team at the Cincinnati hospital has the

expertise to treat these injuries. Every brachial plexus injury is different and the response to treatments varies. Through periodic clinic appointments, doctors and therapists monitor changes in a child’s range of motion, ability to complete activities, and ability to use the injured arm.

Why choose Shriners Hospitals for Children – Cincinnati

• Special expertise. Shriners Hospitals for Children surgeons use advanced microsurgical techniques (including nerve and muscle transfers) to repair damaged brachial plexus nerves, muscles and tendons.

• Team approach. Surgeons, nurses and physical therapists work together to repair damage and restore as much function as possible.

My First Long Hospital TripBY DOUG URIE

I have driven patients and their families to the St. Louis Shrine Hospital many times over the past few years, and enjoyed every trip. On July 18, Ron Griep and I trans-ported a young man and his mother to the Cincinnati Shrine Hospital. This trip

was much the same as the St. Louis trips except much longer in miles traveled and time spent. This trip took us into or through five states. We enjoyed the company of the patient and his mom as we always do, and we talked and joked as we always do, and I believe our riders also enjoyed the trip.

We drove first to the Microtel Motel in Florence, Kentucky, which is only 16 miles from the Hospital. This is a very nice, clean motel managed by Johathan Ab-doo, a brother Shriner who assists all Shriners by giving discounted rates for our stays. They even provide free pass-es to a par three golf course next door to the motel. When we pulled into the motel parking lot we no-ticed there were three other Shrine Hospital Vans from various states. This seems to be a popular motel for Cincinnati Hospital patients and their drivers. Stephanie Malique, the Assistant Manager, suggested a Bar-B-Que Restaurant nearby for dinner. It was a delicious meal that we all enjoyed, and then we retired for the night as we were very tired. The next morning we enjoyed a free continental breakfast before heading to the Hospital.

The Hospital is very child oriented as all Shrine Hospitals are, but the main patient reception area is decorated as a small town with various shops lining the outside walls both on the first and second floors. We were given a tour of the Hos-pital and then waited for our patient to be seen. The Hospital has a Driver’s Lounge with super soft recliners which we had to test. As we laid back we and the other drivers solved most of the world’s problems. We ate in the Hospital cafeteria and had a delicious meal. We left the Hospital about four o’clock in the afternoon and drove straight through to Ararat. We arrived at Ararat Shrine Center about 2:00 a.m. The patient’s father was at the Center when we arrived and quickly took his family home.

The only objectionable thing we experienced was filling the van with fuel. The cost of gasoline these days makes it very difficult to economically provide our pa-tient’s transportation, but we do, and we always will, as our patients always come first. As I have stated before, driving patients to the Hospitals is very enjoyable and rewarding and I heartily recommend that other Shriners join our group and benefit from this experience.

The Shrine Center is as busy as can be. Units are practicing and prepar-ing for CSSA and Sedalia Shrine

Club is getting ready for another State Fair! Make sure you are signed up for the Morning Buzz so you too can stay abreast of all the action. If you are a newer Noble, be sure to become a member of a Club or Unit as soon as possible. That’s the surest way to get acquainted.

Membership now has a regular monthly membership meeting every

4th Thursday at 7pm. All Unit and Club membership chairman are encouraged to participate and take information back to your groups. We will be discussing and training on methods to increase, maintain and restore membership on a Temple, Unit and Club level. It’s time to unite and make a difference.

The fall ceremonial is just around the corner. Its time to get your petitions turned in to the Shrine office. Our 1st Ceremonial Master Clarence Kirby and Steve Johnson have an exciting weekend planned for us all. Remember ALL peti-tions for creation will have to be turned in to the office prior to the Temple meet-ing SEPT. 14th. No petitions will be

accepted without a vote of the Nobility, period. The cost of creation is $150 for initiation plus $72.50 for dues, totaling $222.50. The cost of a new fez is $115, case $25 and stabilizer is $7.50.

Remember it doesn’t cost to be a Shriner. That’s right! Any Noble who creates 2 new Nobles this year will get their Ara-rat dues paid! This

is awesome. Whether you are an “old” Shriner or a new one, you certainly know a family member, church friend, neigh-bor, lake or golf buddy that is interested in becoming a Mason and a Shriner. Di-rect them to www.BeAShrinerNow.com. This is a website that will help answer all the questions your inquisitive friend will have. Or call me at 816-651-7636.

Don’t forget about $hrineSavers! You are entitled to discounts galore on all kinds of services and products. Just log in to www.Shrinersvillage.com.This is a se-cure Shrine website, ONLY for Shriners! You will find out everything Shrine here. It is full of fun. It is full of interesting and in-sightful facts. Being a Shriner is every-thing you make it, and more!

Any Noble who would like to top line sign and mentor a potential Noble should sign up to become a “Virtual Men-tor”. You can do this on www.Shriners-Village.com. When people inquire how to become a Noble, I will be contacted through the website and I will assign someone to help them get signed up to join the Shrine. You will get credit for top line signing them as long as you mentor them into the Shrine. Remember it only takes 2 to get your dues paid! Get active, get involved and get with it! “If you think you can, you can! If you think you can’t, you’re right!”

The Chaplain’s CornerBY LOYD R. GENTRY

If “confession is good for the soul” I ought to feel pret-ty good at the end of this article. I have a confession to make. I am a procrastinator. I put things off. I drag my

feet, dilly-dally, postpone, prolong, and stall. And if I can say so myself, I’m pretty good at it. Only God knows, but I wouldn’t be surprised if I wasn’t in the top 5% of the world’s procrastinators.

I send more “belated” birthday cards than I do the “on time” ones. I once sent a friend two birthday cards at the same time. One for the current year, and one for the upcom-ing year. By the time I get a “new baby” card in the mail the

next one’s on the way. I’m still addressing 2010 Christmas cards. I’ve finished sermons during the organ prelude. “Can you stretch it out a few

minutes longer?” I ask the organist. It’s a wonder I’ve been able to keep secretaries over the years. “Can you give me your newsletter article and sermon topic a little earlier this week?” they plead. If you think I’m making this up just ask the girls in the office and Jim Kerns, Shrine News Editor.

As they read these words they’re just nodding their heads in agreement. Oh,the times they’ve asked, “Are you going to have an article this month?”In front of God and everyone who reads this paper, I hereby promise to change my ways and have an article before the deadline for the next twelve months.

“Procrastination is the fertilizer that makes difficulties grow.” That’s a law of life. There are some things we can do any time. There are other things which we only get a chance to do once. If a word of praise, thanksgiving, or forgiveness needs to be spoken, speak it now, for you may never get the chance to speak it again. A poet unknown to me writes:

If with pleasure you are viewing any work a man is doing If you like him and you trust him, tell him now. Don’t withhold your approbation, till the person makes oration, And he lies with snowy lilies o’er his brow; For no matter how you shout it, he won’t know a thing about it, For he cannot read his tombstone, when he’s dead.Often, there are words of warning which should be spoken now. And gifts

which should be given now. A gift which is given in the moment of need is of double value. Finally, there are decisions which ought to be made and taken here and now. Poet James Russell Lowell penned these words over two centuries ago:

Once to every man and nation comes the moment to decide, In the strife of Truth with Falsehood, for the good or evil side. Is there someone you’ve been planning to propose for membership? Or per-

haps thinking of an “over and above” gift to Ararat? Are you as active a Shriner as you should be? What contributions are you making to your club or unit? Perhaps there’s a broken relationship needing mending. What are you waiting for?

Well, he’s gone. He rode away in the night on that damned Black Camel. I’ll never hear his voice again. I’ll never see his face

again. I’ll never see his smile again. There’s an empty hole somewhere inside me.

He’s Noble Dave Bushakra, Assistant Rabban of Ararat Temple, Independence fireman, husband of Molly, Mason, Shriner, father, grandfather, your friend and mine.

When someone takes that final ride, it makes no difference whether it’s a Noble or a Lady. It hurts. Sometimes I think I miss the Ladies more because I still see the Noble, and feel his loss.

Usually, I go to the Visitation, mainly because I don’t want everybody to see me cry like I know I will if I go to the funeral. It’s easier when my friends are around, knowing how I feel and feeling much the same. We can stand around and tell stories and swap memories, and for a while we can see him smiling again

This time, I went to the funeral. Just didn’t care if everybody knew how much I hurt. I wasn’t alone with my wet cheeks. Besides, Dave was once a member of my Unit, the Oriental Band. He left the OB when some Potentate recognized his talents and capabilities, and appointed him to be an Assistant Director of Uni-formed Units, and then Director of Uniformed Units, and then, the Divan. That introduced him to the whole Temple, and a lot of other Brothers everywhere. I was happy for him. He never forgot me or any of those first Noble friends. I shall miss him greatly.

After the funeral, Dave’s firefighter friends took him for a last ride on a fire truck for a Fireman’s Last Call. He visited every Fire House in Independence, with a procession that made sure everybody on the street knew how many friends he had.

Then, Molly had a Celebration of His Life. Al-most everybody showed up. We remembered Dave in happier times, and we remembered him in happy ways. He was a happy guy.

I guess that we all knew it was going to happen, but I wish it could have been a little bit later. Most likely, it’ll happen to each of us, too. We all talk about how he died too soon or too young, even when he had quite a lot of experience living. In truth, he rode off at precisely the right time; when God, Allah, the Great Architect of the Universe, called his name. When God says “Young man, your work is done. Come to me”, we all answer the call. We can’t say “Wait a minute. I’ve don’t have time for this. I’ve got a circus to help run.” Just doesn’t work that way.

Dave was a good man. He helped the kids. He helped wherever and whenever he could. He mostly told the truth. He believed in God. He was my friend.

We shall all miss him for a long, long, time.

We finally had great weather for ourmeeting in April: no rain, no snow, no 20degrees and windy! Not that the weatherhad ever discouraged our members. Wehad the same great turnout, be the weath-er good or not so good!

Dignitaries attending this month wereLiaison Officer Dave Bushakra and LadyMolly, and Ambassador Curt Karnes andLady Sue. These two couples truly repre-sent good works and good fellowship forthe Shrine and we look forward eachmonth to seeing them.

We were happy to welcome back Daveand Nora Hutchison. They brought backa “truckload” of fish and invited us to theirhomefor the June meeting and a fish fry!

Dave, incidentally, won the 50/50 draw-ing, but that was in no way connected tothe invitation. We would never use anysort of bribery to get Dave and Nora to fixfish for us!

Our guest speaker was Sally Nance,Administrator for the Excelsior SpringsHospital. She gave us a brief history onthe hospital and all the improvementsthey have made, and the new independentliving center completed recently.

Our May meeting will be held again atCatricks Café in Lawson. Tell yourMasonic friends what fun and fellowshipwe have, and bring someone with you tothe next meeting.

Sometimes, we’ve got to pause and recognize those unsung heroes that toil behind the walls that pro-

tect them from the rest of us. I’m talking about those ladies that work in the Busi-ness Office of Ararat Shrine.

Most of us know them; some of us even know their names. I suspect that none of us really know what they do ev-ery day. I don’t think I know all the stuff they do, but I’m powerful glad that they do it. I do know that they answer the phone when I call, and they give me the phone number, e-mail address, and some other info for every Noble in the frater-nity. They take my payments for what-ever I need to pay for, and they tell me what’s happening in the world of Ararat. There are three of them now.

Our Office Manager has been on the job only since September, 2009. Her name is Jerrie Bailey, and her back-ground is in accounting. She sits at the desk in the back of the office.

Jerrie was raised in Rippey, Iowa, and moved to Kansas City in 1971. Her last job was with an advertising agency, where she served as the Accounting Su-pervisor. She likes her “new” job, par-ticularly the interaction with the nobility. She also likes the variety of her work. Or should I say she likes the unpredictabil-ity of her job. It’s certainly not boring.

Jerrie says that she really appreci-ates the positive attitudes demonstrated from both the nobility and their ladies. Increasing our membership and getting more of our members actively involved is crucial. Each member should realize how important their participation is, and all volunteers are greatly appreciated. She would like to see more fund raising events to help the Temple grow, so if you have any ideas, let your voice be heard!

Sharon Elam is the one that toils at the desk out in the middle of the room. She’s worked here so long that

she remembers when our Temple was new. She’s now the one that assembles the Shrine News, and collects the info so that Editor Jim Kerns has something to work with. That’s been in her hands since 2004. She’s also been doing the calendar book since 1995. Sharon likes the detail work, says it makes her feel like a Private Investigator!

Oh, yeah. She’s also a Notary Pub-lic.

Sharon says she doesn’t like negativ-ity. She wants to see positive energy. “You get out of the Shrine what you put into the Shrine.” A very astute young lady.

Sharon is worried about our declin-ing membership. Seems like nobody has time,” she says. She would like to get more news stuff from the Nobility and from the Units and Clubs for the Shrine News.

The lady at the front window is Linda Hickman. She’s been there since Don Fowler was Potentate, which was 1997. She was born in Winona, MN, and moved to Camden, MO. She likes small town living, and now lives in In-dependence. In her first job, she worked in a warehouse. Then, she moved into customer service but only talked on the phone. Personal contact with Nobles and Ladies is much better.

Among other interesting aspects of Linda Hickman is that she lives near the place where the Independence police-man shot the alligator in her neighbor’s yard. Of course, you know that the “al-ligator” turned out to be a concrete lawn ornament.

Linda would like to say “Thank You” for all the kindness and coopera-tion she sees from the Nobility.

We, the Nobles of Ararat, should be thankful for and appreciative of our un-seen assets in our daily battles with all that assails us. Those ladies in the office do a lot for us.

Beautiful Quilt MADE BY ESTHER (GAST) SEGER

Quilt Donated to: Ladies Oriental Shrine of North America To raise funds for Shrine Hospital in St. Louis & Galveston

Mrs. Esther Seger is a wonderful woman so full of energy and life. At the age of 94 she still loves to make quilts; cutting each piece by hand and stitch-ing those to make a beautiful quilt block, then placing them on a quilting

horse to hand quilt the intricate design. Esther was born in Herman, Missouri on April 17, 1917. Around the age of 8 she remembers watching her mother make quilts and began cutting out quilt blocks. Married in 1937 to Roy Seger they spent 67 wonder-ful years together. Esther and Roy have three boys, Delmar, Gary, Dennis, 7 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren and 6 great great grandchildren. Esther has made quilts for everyone in her family and many friends; she has made them quilts for babies, Birthdays, Christmas, Weddings, Car Club, or just because she LOVED YOU. So just add it up: she has made hundreds of the quilts with LOVE. (Quote from Esther, “My Quilts are given away with LOVE.”) When asked how she had time to make all these quilts, she said when you enjoy making something you will

find time. Esther worked 28 years for Pace School Bus Company and while waiting for the kids she would work on stitching together quilt blocks. She purchased hundreds of yards of fabric from Bradley’s on the Independence Square for many years. The Seger family enjoys a large vegetable garden where Esther, family and friends enjoy canning.

10 | ARARAT SHRINE NEWS AUGUST 2011

I had a new experience a few days ago. My Lady and I were wandering around loose and stopped for lunch at a win-

ery in mid-Missouri. They also had food, and it was quite good. But the surprise was in the glass of wine we each had with our sandwiches. IT WAS REALLY GOOD.

Years ago, everybody thought that wines had to be made in France if they

were going to taste good. Oh, there may have been a few Germans and Ital-ians that thought they made pretty good wines, but we were equally adamant that only the French knew how to do it right. Then along came California wines, and Spanish wines, and Australian wines, and Peruvian wines, and wines from just

about every place on earth. Even wines from Missouri

Actually, winemaking in Missouri started about 170 years ago. That might be before the first corn whiskey still was built way back in the Ozark hills. The town of Hermann was founded in 1837, and although the local soil was too rocky for most crops, it was just right for grapes. Within a decade, the region was

producing more than 10,000 gallons of wine a year. Italian immigrants estab-lished wineries in the St. James region, and the Missouri wine industry was off and running!

By 1900, Missouri was home to about 100 wineries, producing about two million gallons of wine each year. Of

course, many of those early wineries are gone today, but we still have about 120 wineries in the state.

Prohibition decimated the wine in-dustry in Missouri, and the tax structure after the repeal held off the rebirth until the 1960’s. In the 1980’s a new tax en-abled the establishment of the Missouri Wine and Grape program, and Augusta became the first federally recognized

American Viticultural Area (AVA). The wine regions around Hermann, the southwest Missouri Ozark Mountains and highlands and the south central re-gion around St. James have also been designated as AVAs.

In 2003, the Norton/Cynthiana va-rietal became Missouri’s official state

grape. Norton is an American grape, found near Richmond, Virginia. It pro-duces a rich, full-bodied dry red wine with berry flavors and spicy overtones. Genetically the same, this wine may be bottled as either Norton or Cynthiana.

That Winery that we visited was the Le Bourgeois Vineyard at Rocheport, just north of I-70 at the Missouri River. It sits on the bluff overlooking the riv-er, and offers a beautiful view in addi-tion to good food and wine. Since this blurb is call “Food and Wine”, I’ll tell you that this bistro has a good selection of both dinner entrees and lunch dishes. It should go without saying that they have a selection of sweet and dry wine, red and white, all made there. They even have a sparkling wine that I would call Champagne, if I didn’t know that we have at least one Noble who knows bet-ter. And, they’ll help you pick a good wine to complement your meal.

Well, here we are in the month of May, which meansthe parade season has started. Hope that everyone hada good time at Missouri City and Richmond.

Let’s go back a couple of months for a minute. InMarch, Noble Art Kinder brought his grandson to O.B.rehearsal. We all got to meet him and made him welcome. He really seemed to enjoy watching his granddad play, however I think that might have made Art a little nervous.Art had said before we got started that his grandsonwas here visiting from Canada. It seemed to me that wemight have a future Master Mason in the works.

On a sad note, that month we also lost our last char-ter member of the O.B., Noble Loren Lundy. Hepassed away at the young age of 100, a milestonewhich he turned last August. All our prayers and goodwishes go out to the rest of his family. He was oneNoble that stood out above the rest in every way possible. He is truly missed.

Next we have a little bit about the O.B. SpringDance. It may not have been the best turnout we haveever had, but President Waco still did an outstandingjob. He made sure that those who did make it reallyhad a good time; so, “Hats off and job well done,” toour President. And let’s not forget our ladies for having the Silent Action in the back of Bennett; “A

GREATBIG THANK YOU,” from President Wacoand the rest of us as well.

Now how about the month of April? Hmmmm, let’ssee! It was reported that our President Waco, who alsoplays the bass drum, is very versatile. He can scratchhis back with one hand and continue to play well withthe other. Who knew?

On another note, the O.B. would like to welcomeback Noble Don Lanning. He took a trip to Englandfor a little while but had to come back because he didnot have a visa to be able to stay longer. He said that hewas having a great time over there with his wife, andgot to go and see his son as well. So all in all the tripmay have been short but the time was well spent.

Just to touch a little bit on the Swap Meet, the O.B.had a pretty good turnout to help in all areas from thepop wagon to picking up trash. President Waco wouldjust like to say, “THANKS GUYS.” He couldn't havedone it without us. Saturday was the best day. It wascrowded but we all managed to make it through.Sunday was not as busy, but still a pretty good turnout. So from the nobles of the Oriental Band to all of thenobles that were able to make it, GREATJOB! Hopeto see you in the fall for the next one.

Til then, be safe.

ARARAT’S OWN COUNTRY CLASSICS By Jeff Davis, Scribe

There’s an old Vince Gill song titled, “Look at Us.”I think that fits as a pretty good theme for this month.“LOOK AT US”!!!!!! We’re going to be very busy allaround the jurisdiction.

First, we will be playing at the Abdallah Shrine’sRodeo Kick-off Party on May 1. This is a great party andthey have a wonderful time and have been very good tous as a band. We enjoy playing for them every year.

We will be at Ararat on the 15th playing for the

Ceremonial. This is a fundraiser for the Temple socome on out, enjoy some good music and help theTemple with your donations.

And, of course, we love playing at the WarsawShrine Club’s pre parade party on June 4th. We have asmuch fun as they do and really enjoy playing for all ofthe Ladies and Nobles.

That should bring things up to date. Til nextmonth……..

Illustrious Sir B. J. Richardson called the June, 2011, meeting to order at 7:35 PM in the Frank S. Land Ball-

room. Due to the passing of Assistant

Rabban Dave Bushakra, High Priest & Prophet Wayne Spencer informed the Captain of the Guard of the impending proceedings.

Captain of the Guard Bill Lutman reported that our Temple was under a double and trusty guard.

Oriental Guide Maurice Camer-lynck prepared the Altar. Chaplain Loyd Gentry remembered our Nobles who had been visited by the Black Camel and gave the Invocation.

The Legion of Honor presented the colors, accompanied by the Concert Band.

The assembled Nobles recited the Shrine Pledge of Allegiance and the Ara-rat Concert Band played the National Anthem.

Recorder Mike Wheeler read three Petitions for Creation. All were accept-ed by unanimous vote of the Nobility present. There were two Restorations, and one Demit and nine Remissions.

Treasurer Mike Allen gave the Trea-surer’s Report. All in all, the Treasurer’s Report shows that we are still solvent, but our monetary position is tight. We are expecting approximately $25,000 from onion sales, but several Clubs and Units have not remitted to the Temple.

Circus and Bingo income is up, and General Fund contributions are also up. The Restaurant still shows a deficit, but less than last year.

Illustrious Sir B. J. discussed the Restaurant finances. Salary expenses are very high as a percentage of sales, primarily because of low patronage by the Nobility. Cooks and servers must be employed to serve the maximum number of customers that might reasonably be expected, even when the customer count is low. Our restaurant usage is very volatile, and we need a fairly consistent customer count every day to support the workers that we must have to serve the occasional large crowds.

Illustrious Sirs Kevin Sleyster, P.P., and Paul Black, P.P., both made a dona-tion to the General Fund.

The Amateur Radio S.C. donated funds for the purchase of an industrial-strength paper shredder for the Hospital Committee.

The Kansas City Association for the Blind Amateur Radio Club made a dona-tion to Telemedicine to thank us for the use of our amateur radio repeater.

The Director of Uniformed Units made a donation to the Hospital Trans-portation Fund.

The Grandview S.C. made a dona-tion to the 2011 Circus Fund and another to the General Fund.

No visitors were registered.Illustrious Sir B. J. gave his report

on the Imperial Session, and then invited Noble Nick Baldi, who attended as a del-egate, to give us his impressions. Noble Nick told us that he was very favorably impressed with “us.” There was a full 12-hour session on Tuesday, and the delegates worked together and accom-plished the work of the Imperial Council as a team. The Hospitals reported that they are relatively secure, and they do not want to see the fraternal Shrine go away. The Council accepted the mem-bership of the German Shrine.

High Priest & Prophet Wayne Spen-cer reported that many Units & Clubs have not yet submitted their Onion Sales payments. It is impossible for the Tem-ple to accept returned onions.

Chief Rabban Richard Floyd talked about the 2011 Circus and presented jackets in honor of raising $1500 to Lloyd Newman, Duane Steele, Bill Walker, Stan Schierholz, and Roy Tad-lock.

Oriental Guide Maurice Camer-lynck told us that the 1st Annual Ararat Gun and Knife Show was successful. He thanked several Nobles for their hard work, and made a point of thanking the Provost for their support and assistance.

Bingo Chairman Buck Johnson reported that some of our Clubs and Units are forgetting to show up on the nights they are scheduled to work. He still needs “walking” help at all Bingo Nights. There was no donation from the Bingo Committee this month because ex-penses for the month exceeded receipts. He did present the players donations to

Telemedicine. Hospital Chairman Ed Stowell told

us that the Southwest Airlines “Green Pass” program has expired and we must now pay for our flights. Fifty-five flights were covered by the program, saving us about $17,000. A Blood Drive will be held prior to our next Temple Meeting, starting at 2:30 in the afternoon. Noble Ed presented some donations to the Hos-pital Transportation Fund.

Membership Chairman Rod Mc-Grath pointed out that more members would mean better financial health. Therefore, we all need to get a new No-ble. He also told us that the number of members is the lowest in several years.

Director of Uniformed Units Don Pittier spoke about the next upcoming parade on August 11 in Sedalia with a 5:00 pm lineup. After that, we have a double header on August 20 in Parkville and Lexington, and finally in Edgerton, MO on September 10. We will not par-ticipate in the American Royal Parade due to a conflict with our Fall Swap Meet.

We will have a Special Election at the August 10 Temple Meeting to fill the unexpired term of Noble Dave Bushakra. In the interim, all members of the Divan will move up one position.

Upcoming events were announced as the Luau on August 19, Chili Con-test on September 20, and the Potentates Golf Outing on September 26.

Chaplain Loyd gave the benediction. The meeting was adjourned at 9:36

PM.

We had so much fun at the Wings of Mercy Golf Tournament that we’re going to do it again at the same place. The second chapter of the Great Ararat Golf Adventure will be held on September 26, 2011, at the Winterstone Golf

Club in Independence. We’ll start this tournament with donuts and coffee followed by a Shotgun Start at

10:00 am. It will, of course, be a four-man Scramble and will end with prizes and tro-phies, as well as Bragging Rights for a full year for the winning team. The Entry Fee will be only $85.00 per player.

For those of you who don’t know Winterstone Golf Course, it’s a beautiful course, located near the intersection of East Kentucky Rd. and Hiway 291. You can see pictures of the course on the Winterstone web page, www.winterstonegolf.com, and you can see photos of your fellow Nobles playing the course on our web page, www.araratshrine.com.

You will get a goody bag full of things that you have always wanted, and you might win a door prize. I won’t promise that you will win a trophy. But, you will have fun.

Proceeds from this event will support Ararat Shrine.

Boonslick Shrine ClubBY SAM THOMPSON, SCRIBE

We had a successful Rodeo food booth this year on June 3rd & 4th at the Brady Show Grounds. We had a lot of good help setting up on Thursday evening and also during the Rodeo on Thur. & Fri. nights. We want to

really thank all the Ladies who came out to help us. Without them we probably wouldn’t know what to do. The money raised from this event is used to take our kids to the Circus. A big thanks to Noble Dan Painter for chairing this event, he is also chairing the Circus event this year. And a thank you to our Ambassador, Noble Ken Sisemore, for coming to the event.

Our Parade Cycle Club went to the Warsaw Parade on June 11th. I missed it due to a family reunion that day in Potosi. I understand it was a good parade, no one got hurt!

Our Heritage Days Boonville Parade was a huge success; we had the largest

group of Shriners ever. A BIG thanks to all those Shriners and Ladies who traveled to Boonville to participate in the parade on June 25th. We had a breakfast before the parade and a lunch after the parade at the Cooper Lodge Hall. Another BIG thank you to all the Ladies that worked to prepare and set-up the meals and keep the tables full of food and clean-up afterwards. We couldn’t do it without them. Even our Am-bassador’s Lady, Mary, pitched in to help us out, Thank you. THANKS TO ALL, it was a great event.

On July 2nd our Cycle Club participated in the Parade at Clinton. It was a huge parade. It was great to see the large number of Ararat Units that came to the parade this year.

During our regular July meeting (7/7) Noble Charley Swafford, Shrine Club Director, presented Nobles Roy Cary and Tom Thurman, their 5th Crown of Honor Jewel. Congratulations Nobles, thank you for all your work to earn these Jewels.

Liberty Shrine ClubBY JOE SNOPEK, SCRIBE

All of us at the Liberty Shrine Club want to thank all of the Nobility and their Ladies who participated in our 15th Annual Illustrious Sir Jack Cummins Golf Outing. We had one of our best turnouts and raised funds to help our Club’s commitments

for the year. We truly appreciate the golfers, hole and food sponsors and our local food markets, Hy Vee and Price Chopper for their generous contributions to our event. We are fortunate to live in a community that still believes in supporting our efforts in this endeavor as well as our onion sales over the past 2 years. We have a good mix of local businesses and Nobility which donate hole sponsorships, raffle prizes and food which helps us from depending solely on our brother Units and Clubs. I would also like to thank the Trans-porters for their efforts of transporting the golfers and their clubs as well as keeping our refreshments filled on the course throughout the day, and our chefs Shaun and Rich Rob-inson. Our Ladies and Nobility assisted in force once again with check-ins, hole contests and our raffle and food service, thank you for your commitments!

Our July dinner meeting consisted of a prelude to our August annual picnic. The VFW served us a lighter fare of summer picnic food but in the cool confides of the Post with access to the deck for the more adventurous. Our August picnic for our member-ship and their families will be at Smithville Lake on August 28th. The festivities will include custom cooked steak, roasted sweet corn and a plethora of side dishes and des-serts prepared by our nobility and their ladies. I am sure some games of skill will be present for the competitive among us and the conversation will be continuous for one and all. This is our 14th year of this event and it allows us to thank our members for their efforts throughout the year. It once again shows that membership in the Liberty Shrine Club has its benefits since there is no charge for this event other than the covered dishes!

Shortly after our picnic CSSA will be occurring in Overland Park. With the close proximity this year and the hotel costs eliminated for most it is a great time for all of us to rekindle old friendships from the other Shrine Centers in our Central States group. With all of us getting a bit younger in heart every year this can be a great opportunity to talk about the old times with some of our competition from days gone by. $20 a person for the entire event is a small price to have some fun and reminisce possibly over a lunch or dinner.

Our annual circus is just around the corner and we need your help in selling busi-ness card ads, banners and collecting for your unit’s contribution. Our Chief Rabban Richard and Lady Linda are working hard and long to make this a great event. We will have the same format of our hospitality room with meals served by our units and clubs in the lower mezzanine at Municipal Auditorium once again this year to feed and water us between performances. Your assistance IS needed at the auditorium to help as ushers, selling novelties in the seating area as well as in the novelty booths. Nobility and their Ladies and families are encouraged to come out and join us….what a way to make an in-expensive family event complete with entertainment and food! Child care is still under consideration since over the past years the number of children present was less than the volunteers we assigned to them. If you have any suggestions please get with Joe Snopek or Noble Richard Floyd to discuss them.

Until we meet at our next event please take the necessary summer precautions of plenty of water, plenty of sunscreen and plenty of thanks to the Great Architect of the Universe for the Blessings we are given daily to enjoy our Fraternity and families. Peace to all!

Hello Nobles and Ladies. If you are a Northlander we need YOU. We are a great bunch of guys with a WONDERFUL wives group who meet once a month for good food and fellowship

On July 5th, 2011 your scribe was forced to work overtime and missed our meet-ing and dinner so I don’t have a lot of good stuff to pass on.

I do want to take this space to say Thank You to some folks. A Great Big Thanks to Jerry Grimes for driving the truck with no air conditioner to the Clinton parade and helping to put up and take down the float. Another Great Big Thank You to Dave Dowell for being there to set up, take down and drive the float. It was super

hot and without these guys we would not have had a presence. I also want to thank Dave McLaughlin, who even though he was in his Greeter getup, was there to help set up the float. And thanks to Ron and Hank of the Transporters for also helping to put the float together. Even though it was super hot we had a good time and a great lunch afterward at the Convention Center. We got to visit with a lot of good folks there.

Have a good month and we’ll hopefully see you at the August meeting. Again, if you want some good food and want to meet some good people come on

by our next meeting, August 2nd at the VFW in Claycomo. Hope to see you there.

Greeter NewsBY DARYL KRAUSE

It’s Never Been Greater To Be An Ararat Greeter” at the recent Greeter Picnic. Well summer is definitely here and as we reach midway through the year the Greeters participated in the Boonville and

Clinton parades. The heat and distance kept the attendance down at these parades. So, special thanks go out to all the Greeter Nobles that represented our organization on those days.

On Sunday, July 11 the Greeters took on the heat and participated in the Annual Greeters Picnic at Lake Jacomo. Leroy Graham / Mike Whiteside / Bob Shackelford did a wonderful job putting this together and making sure everything went well. Ian Ramage along with Ian’s son Kenny and Bobby Rojas once again provided smoked brisket, sausage and ribs. Janet Cordell’s world famous coleslaw made another appearance and was quickly devoured by all. Greeterettes provided the desserts. A special thanks to my wife Lynn for filling in for me and delivering tables and chairs.

The Greeters next big event will be “Breakfast in the Park” on August 14th at Longview Lake Shelter #3. All are invited but we need a correct head count. So contact one of the Greeter officers and let them know. Also everyone that can should bring lawn chairs to insure seating requirements.

Finally, I am adding some pictures of the Picnic to show all that not only do the Greeters have a lot of fun but we eat well too. Which once again proves…

18 | ARARAT SHRINE NEWS AUGUST 2011

Greetings from the members of the Jackson County Shrine Club. By the time this article comes out, we will be days away from our 4th Annual BBQ Contest. There may still be places to reserve or sponsor spots to be had.

Call our hard working BBQ Chairman, Steve Hollbrook (816-356-0447) as he has all the details. Mark August 12th for a night of music, BBQ, friends and a whole lot of smoke. Rain or shine, we have a great time. Saturday the 13th at noon to 2 pm we have the tasting and the judging then all winners will be announced so they can have bragging rights till next year. They also win a nice trophy and certificate. With our new fence up we are selling advertising spaces (3 ft. x 5 ft) metal signs with your company’s logo, services, or just to be a friend of the club. Let your Brothers know what experience you have to offer. Call Bill Boynton (816-223-0610) for information. Spaces are limited so the early birds get the best spaces, as you get to select your spot. Bill has better information on this then I do. He will fill in the gaps on a great opportunity.

Fellow Brother Dave Johnson is waiting to haul away any old clunker, farm implement or old unwanted metal you are tired of looking at. This service is free as all proceeds go towards supporting our club and our Temple. Call me at (816-291-5517) and I will handle the details for pickup of the items. Some items may be tax deductible and a receipt will be given for your items.

Fun-Kor Director, Terry Slayton is finally getting the scooters on the streets. We are still having clutch burnout problems, and if there is an expert out there that can help us solve this problem we would be thankful for the help. As in life, it’s all trial and error. In the mean time, we will keep up our trial and error rides just because it’s so much fun. We have had a few new members buy their own bikes and are practicing and riding with us. If you too are interested in riding one of our yellow devils contact Terry (816-833-3166) for all the info.

Our Fun-Kor unit has been geared up and enjoying the parades. They look

great as a unit and as representatives of our club. They have fun showing off for the kids on the sidelines as they ride by on their little yellow devils, shaking hands, revving up their motors and speeding away. As the kids say, “WAY COOL.”

Our Building and Grounds Chairman, Bill Boynton and his helpers have once again made a great improvement to our club. Our outside cabana area we built last year had cracked and buckled asphalt in it. They removed it and poured the new deck of concrete with the proper slope for drainage, and will now make this a great asset to our club. Come to the club and see this area we can use for club picnics, outside cooking, TV watching under the fans, and a cold fridge to keep your fa-vorite beverage handy. We will have this area open during the BBQ Contest so we can show off our talents our Building and Grounds crews have. The club thanks all who have been involved to make this happen.

Now on to our handicap ramp; all it takes is money and a lot of help. If you would like to help us make this ramp happen this year call Bill, and we would be glad to accept any monetary donation you can afford. This can be a tax deductible donation for you. We hate to ask for donations but imagine all Brothers and guests having access to our building and are able to start enjoying it once again. Thanks again if you can help your club grow.

Our club is saddened by the passing of our 1996 Past President and Divan member, Brother Dave Bushakra. Dave always loved being a member of Jackson County and his club’s building. He always kept an interest here in our well be-ing and loved seeing us grow and prosper in our endeavors as a club. As we walk by his Past President’s picture on the wall here and see his smiling face, we will remember Dave that way. Always smiling at all his friends he has made starting at his Blue Lodge Independence #76, the Shrine and in our club. All members of Jackson County Shrine Club send our love, support and condolences to his won-derful Lady Molly, and are honored to be chosen as a place Dave wanted to be at during his Celebration of Life. Keep smiling Brother. We will miss you.

Until next time remember here at Jackson County Shrine Club we say, “Where the dues are cheap and the FUN is priceless.”

Jackson County Shrine ClubBY HANK W. KOONTz

Oriental BandBY HANK W. KOONTz, PRESIDENT

Here we are in the heat of July and we can proudly say that the O.B. is enjoying the parade season. We have been very pleased to welcome back some long time

devoted members. We have made every parade so far and are ready for more. We can’t thank the communities that have graciously treated us to their hometown hospitality enough. They were glad we came to their parades and we were proud to be there as Shriners and as their guests. All that and fun too, go O.B.

Come to our practices and see why we have so much fun. See if you would enjoy this unit and our sweet music. We are always looking for more raw talent to be a part of a unique unit with 62 years of great times and with great friends. Bring your Lady as the Casbah Darlins would wel-come her with open arms. They also know how to have fun and support our Band and most importantly “The Kids.” No not us kids in the Band, I’m talking about our “Shriner Kids.”

The Band is deeply saddened by the passing of our Brother and Oriental Band member, Noble and Assistant Rabban Dave Bushakra. Dave always supported our Band and our Temple any way he could. He was straight forward with his words and his devotion to all his friends. Molly and Dave were a part of our O.B. family and we were blessed to play for them and all his family, co-workers, and many, many friends he made throughout his life, one more time. Bless you Molly for your love and support, Dave will always be smiling down on you and tapping his foot to our music. He will me missed in many different ways as his friendship meant a lot and to a lot of different people. He will always be with us. Thanks Dave, for all the great memories.

Now I must continue on. Our O.B. Business Meeting is on the 3rd Monday of the month, the Monday following the Temple Business Meeting. We get together in the Restaurant about 6 p.m. and start our meeting at 7 p.m. All Nobles that don’t belong to a unit are invited to our meetings and prac-tices. Stop in, relax, and enjoy. See if you can have as much fun as we do. Take the challenge. If we don’t get to you, our music will. I guarantee it.

We now have our tickets to sell for our Annual “Wheelbarrow full of Booze” raffle to be drawn at our Cir-cus. Tickets are $1.00 each or 6 for $5.00. We need the help of every Band member to sell as many tickets as possible. This raffle is our main fundraiser and helps to support the Band, our Temple, and our “Kids.” Fun is fun, but it costs money. Help us keep having fun. Many thanks to all the Nobles that buy these tickets to help support us. We as No-bles of the Mystic Shrine need to stick together and support all units and the Shrine in all their endeavors. This is the only way Ararat can remain strong and we can ensure our future as a unit.

We are still working on our Fall Dance plans and our Mandarin Degree at CSSA. If you have had a part in this degree, we need your help. Call and let me know if you still have a Mandarin costume as many of our costumes, in-struments and backdrops are at various people’s houses and haven’t been seen in quite some time. This is O.B. property and we desperately need things returned so others might enjoy them. I have the scripts to the degree for those with speaking parts to brush up on. Let’s make this a night of fun for all our candidates. Let’s let them enjoy the degree as much as you enjoyed meeting the Mandarin.

Until then, “Keep the Musettes howling and the drums a poundin!”

Needle GuildBY, JERRI DOWDY

A big thank you to the Grandview Shrine Club and the Liberty Shrine Club for their gen-erous donations. We appreciate all donations. Thanks to those who have recently donated fabric. Donations of all kinds are what help us be able to do what we do.

We use our money to buy fabric, thread, scis-sors, elastic, needles, patterns, new sewing ma-chines, new sergers etc. Through the years, the Needle Guild has depended on donations, both monetary and material to continue to provide the hospitals with the items they request. With the help of outlying sewing clubs, we provide the Shri-ners Hospitals for Children with quilts, pillows, book bags, laundry bags, toy bags, therapy balls, favors and stuffed toys (especially Raggedy Ann and Andy dolls). We also sew lap robes, afghans, robes, pajamas, IV gowns, shorts, tops, sweat suits, pants and shirts of all sizes from 4 to Adult.

To our Needle Guild members or any others who are ill, we hope you all will soon be much better.

If you are interested in making articles for the Shriners Hospitals for Children and making new friends, come to a meeting on the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of each month (except July, Aug. & Dec.) from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in Bennett Au-ditorium. For more information, get in touch with President, Elaine Graham at 816-524-0933. We hope to see you at a meeting this year starting in September.

Provost NewsBY BILL HUFFMAN, SCRIBE

This month’s news has nothing to do with the Provost Club as far as busi-ness and events are concerned. Many of our Brothers have departed this world without

the accolades that everyone deserves. Some soared to the top levels, and some were content to simply find a place that allowed them to serve, but all made an impact.

I received the following poem via an e-mail, and it made quite an impression on me. I would like to share it with every Noble and Lady.

Until next time, God Bless.

If tomorrow starts without me,And I’m not there to see,If the sun should rise and find your eyesAll filled with tears for me:I wish so much you wouldn’t cryThe way you did today,While thinking of the many things,We didn’t get to say.

I know how much you love me,As much as I love you,And each time that you think of me,I know you’ll miss me too;

but when tomorrow starts without me,Please try to understand,That an angel came and called my name,And took me by the hand,

And said my place was ready,In heaven far above,And that I’d have to leave behindAll those I dearly love.

but as I turned to walk away,A tear fell from my eye,For all my life, I’d always thought,I didn’t want to die.

I had so much to live for,So much left yet to do,It seemed almost impossible,That I was leaving you.

I thought of all the yesterdays,The good ones and the bad,I thought of all that we shared,And all the fun we had.

If I could relive yesterday,Just even for a while,I’d say good-bye and hug youAnd maybe see you smile.

but then I fully realized,That this could never be,For emptiness and memories,Would take the place of me.

And when I thought of worldly thingsI might miss some tomorrow,I thought of you, and when I did,My heart was filled with sorrow.

but when I walked through heavens’ gates,I felt so much at home. When God looked down and smiled at me,From His great golden throne,

He said, “This is eternity,And all I’ve promised you.Today your life on earth is past, but here life starts anew.

I promise no tomorrow, but today will always last,And since each day is the same way,There’s no longing for the past.”

So when tomorrow starts without me,Don’t think we’re far apart,For every time you think of me,I’m right there, in your heart.

IF TOMORROW STARTS WITHOUT ME

Sedalia Shrine ClubBY RON HINKLE, SCRIBE

A sincere “How do you do” and “hope you are fairing well” from the Sedalia Shrine Club. We are in the grips of summer but that doesn’t deter this club from its voluntary goals and duties. We would like to thank all of our Nobles and Ladies for your tireless dedication and attention to the needs of our club and children we sponsor.

Our Fun Kor has entertained the crowds in Boonville and Clinton and brought many a smile and thank you from the spectators of these neighboring communities. Thank you from our club for inviting us to your celebrations. We enjoy performing. Our next parade will be August 11th in Sedalia to entertain our own community at the opening of the Missouri State Fair. Come out and watch your Fun Kor doing what it does best, Shine!

Our golf course is both groomed and more than ready for your golfing pleasure. Seniors are still meeting on Fridays at 1:00 pm. Come out and enjoy the course at our special summer rates. If its practice you need, our driving range is your answer. Instruction is also available.

Our Bar has all your favorite libations. Come in and enjoy time with your friends and neighbors. One of our main fundraisers is now upon us. Our fair stand desperately needs your help to make it a success. Its

success and the success of our fundraisers equate to our survival as the Sedalia Shrine Club. Our worker schedule is located in our Golf Pro Shop.

Please come in and sign up for as many shifts as you can. We have a 24 hour a day operation from the 11th of August till the 21st. We will take you to the Fairgrounds and pick you up and bring you back to our club. Each shift meets at the club one half hour before the shift begins, and we transport you to the Fairgrounds. Again, please help. We have a fish fry the following weekend after the fair is over for all of our fair stand volunteers.

We still have plenty of raffle tickets for a large tool chest made by Waterloo Industries. This is one of our fund-raisers and tickets are $10.00 each or 3 for $20.00.

This is really a nice tool chest for a modest investment. This scribe would like to thank our Ladies for the many ways you support us as Nobles and the many functions

of the Sedalia Shrine Club. This club would be in dire straits if it wasn’t for your volunteer efforts. You are truly God sends!

We would like to thank our neighboring Shrine Clubs for the many ways you also support our club. Shriners make good neighbors and we appreciate your voluntary investments in the Sedalia Shrine Club.

When you hit your knees tonight remember our sick and disabled. Pray for their recoveries and the comforting of their families. Continue to remember all of our Brothers and Sisters in service to this great country. Until next month, stay well and Smile, (it’s contagious).

Pipes and DrumsBY JOHN HALL

Well, here it is August. It is almost football season – my favorite time of the year. But opening weekend of college football is also CSSA Convention in Overland Park, Kansas. On Friday afternoon –TBA – the Pipes and Drums will sponsor a meeting of the Clan of Highlanders. Flyers will be placed at the west and

front doors for your convenience with all the information for a great afternoon of fun and fellowship. So get your candidates and we will see you Friday, September 2, at Ararat Shrine.

The unit was recently honored by the Kansas City Missouri Police Department for their contribution to the me-morial service every year. I might add that the band plays at several sites on Memorial Day to honor our fallen heroes. Some of the sites we play at are the Viet- Nam Memorial, World War II Memorial, Firemen and KC Police Memo-rial. Most of our members are veterans and we appreciate what the band has done and will continue to do to honor our heroes. It is very heartwarming for people who have lost loved ones in service to our country to hear ‘Amazing Grace’ played on the bag pipes.

Our next business meeting will be August 4. Come and join us. Happy Hour is 6:15 PM with the meeting start-ing at 7 PM. As always, if you need a pipe band or piper, contact Gary Mosby at Ararat Shrine. If you have a request or information for the newsletter, contact John Hall at: johnhall9604 @sbcglobal.net.

Ole CarsBY DICK LEWIS, SCRIBE

Our July meeting was postponed due to the 4th of July Holiday and was held on Monday July 11th at the Temple with all officers and 15 members in attendance. We were again honored to have our Liaison Officer 1st Ceremonial Master Noble

Clarence Kirby with us, who presented several of our members with their new Crown Jewel awards.

We welcome our new member Noble John Fos-ter who was elected to our membership during our July meeting. He and his Lady Kay reside in Lathrop, Mis-souri. They are the owners of a modified 1955 Interna-tional truck.

Our parade schedule has been active the past few weeks. We paraded in Boonville on Saturday June 25th with 9 cars parading. Due to a heavy sprinkle during the parade those with convertibles had the tops up with exception of our President, Noble Mack Owens who braved the rain. We thank the members of Cooper Masonic Lodge and their ladies who served us delicious food and beverages following the parade. On Saturday July 2nd we traveled to Clinton with 8 cars parading. We thank the City of Clinton for the food and beverages served us following the parade. We were served in their new Community and Convention Center. We then viewed the Desoto Museum of Jim Raysik, owner of Jim Raysik Motors who had 40 beautiful vehicles on display with the oldest being a 1933 Dodge. His total collec-tion includes 110 antique automobiles. On Monday July 4th we paraded in Sugar Creek with 13 cars parading.

It was good to have our Past President Noble Jerry Alumbaugh with us who was just back from Florida. He rode with our Past Director Noble Harold (Dub) Doubledee. It was also good to have our guest Noble Boyd Owens with us again, who rode with his son and our President Noble Mick Owens. We thank the civic and commercial clubs of Sugar Creek for the hot dogs and beverages served us following the parade.

Our Ole Car Picnic will be held this year at the City of Sugar Creek Park on Sunday August 14th at 3:00 pm. Please bring a covered dish.

Our get well list includes Past Director and Vice President Noble Ben Kropf who had double hernia surgery on June 22nd, and is recovering very well.

In this issue we highlight the beautiful custom built trailer owned by our member Benny Hoke and Lady Opal, pictured below. The trailer was completed and painted by

Creative Classics of Independence, Missouri. Ten Coke coolers were used to complete, in-cluding overnight storage. The front cooler is used for food and beverages including an all polished stainless steel charcoal grill. Many of us have seen their beautiful 1934 Plymouth Coupe used to pull the trailer. It is powered by a 350 Ramjet V8 fuel injection engine, 700 R4 transmission with full power and air. The color is Dupont Hot Hughes Ginger Bronze and Harvest Flame.

C.S.S.A. is fast approaching us in Overland Park, Kansas this year September 1st thru the 4th. We need an all member participation to compete in Motor Corps competition and win another 1st place trophy. Please have all details of your vehicle for our Director and bring to our August meeting on Monday August 1st.

NOBODY TOLD ME!By, Steve Dowdy

I went to the Potentate’s Ball last month, but it was too late for me to write about it.It wasn’t too late to get the pictures in thepaper, but I couldn’t write fast enough.

We’ve always liked the Potentate’s Ball, probably because Jerri likes to get dressedup, and when she’s happy, it’s easy for meto get happy. Besides that, wearing a tuxe-do makes me feel like James Bond! Ofcourse, it’s not the getting beat up twice inevery movie that I like to imagine, butthere’s enough other cool stuff to keep myinner Walter Mitty quite happy.

This time, the ball was a masqueradeparty. We only wore masks on our faces, unless you count the James Bond outfit. Ithought that would be the silliest thing Iever did, but I was wrong. I was reallywrong! I was great! Shriner’s wives arebeautiful anyway, but the air of mystery

added something special. Then, the Nobleslooked like some kind of royalty in theirmasks. I didn’ t have much trouble identi-fying anybody, but it was fun to pretend.

The decorations were certainly impressive, and the food was outstanding. I’m sure thatsomebody got something he didn’t like, butthat’s the way the world works. It’s reallydifficult to prepare good food for that manypeople, and it’s even more difficult trying toserve that many people, keeping the foodwarm and not dropping a plate in anyone’s lap.

Then came the band. Asmall band fromJoplin, of all places. As far as I know,Joplin has never been the music capital ofthe free world, but with this band, they’vegot a pretty good chance. The band wascalled “Diversity,” and it was appropriate. They played stuff that the old guys like meenjoyed, and they played stuff that the several

young people in the attendance really liked. There were several “kids” at the ball,

some of them were family of the Divan, some were young Nobles and Ladies, andsome were sons and daughters of Nobles.Whoever they were, they danced andlaughed and behaved politely while havinga lot of fun. Some of them even dancedwith Nobles old enough to be their fathers, and at least one young lady talked one ofour dance divas into giving her dance les-sons. Lady Eva Horrell seemed to be hav-ing as much fun as her student. It was greatseeing such a diverse group dancing to aband called Diversity. Can’t you just pic-ture them telling their friends that those oldpeople really know how to have fun!

It taught me that we can attract youngmen to the Nobility, and we can enjoy beingaround each other. That means a lot to our

fraternity. Too many young men look at usand think that they have nothing in com-mon with us. My own son, a Noble him -self, doesn’t like to come to our parties anddances because he doesn’t like “our music.”We need to find common ground, and itwas there at the Potentate’s Ball.

I think a lot of the credit must go to theFirst Lady, because I just don’t seeIllustrious Sir Kevin putting all of thattogether by himself. But, with LadyDianna’s help, and guidance, he threw ahelluva party! They’re quite a pair!

If we, the Nobility of Ararat Shrine, cancontinue in that tradition, we are going tohave a fantastic year. We CAN have fun whilehelping our kids, and it’s time we did so.

FOOD & WINEBy, Steve Dowdy

Last month we talked about the labelsthat they stick on a bottle of wine. So nowyou should have a little knowledge of howto read a wine label. But that doesn’ t helpmuch unless you know something about thetaste of the wine. Some wines simply tastebetter with some foods.

Conventional wisdom has been to drinkred wines with red meat, and white wineswith “white” meat. But what to you drinkwith ham? Ham looks pink to me, but noexpert ever says you should drink pink winewith anything. That could be because“pink” is called “blush,” but I really suspectthat it’s mostly snobbery.

The most important aspect of pairingfood and wine is not color, but “body.”Delicate or lightly flavored foods work bestwith light bodied wines. Stronger, heavierfoods should be paired with medium to fullbodied wines. There are several, perhapsmany, schemes to help evaluate which winegoes with which food, but the most reliableis simply “personal taste.” But personaltaste must be developed, so let’s look for astarting point.

The old rule of red with red and whitewith white works to some degree, butthere’s a lot of room for experimentation. For one point of confusion, all red winesdon’t taste the same, and neither do allwhite wines. Sometimes this approachworks, but there might be a better way.

Another approach to pairing is to try toreflect the character of the food with thecharacter of the wine. Some fish dishes, such as broiled salmon, have a very robustflavor, and pair very well with a robustwine such as a Pinot Noir. And veal fits in

with a Sauvignon Blanc like beer with hotdogs. Maybe I should tell you that PinotNoir is a deep red and Blanc means“white.”

Don’t forget that sauces have a great dealto do with pairing because they can com -pletely change the taste and texture of thefood. Alightly flavored sauce can comple-ment a delicate wine, but a more robustsauce needs a heavier wine with more body.

Of course, this is Kansas City, and we eata lot of barbeque. Folks, I don’t know whatwine to suggest with barbecued ribs or beefbrisket. Some full-bodied, red wine with alot of character would probably be best, maybe a Pinot Noir or even a Shiraz? I’vehad some wonderful Shiraz, and I’ve hadsome that were too spicy. How aboutChampagne? White Zinfandel probablywon’t work for me, but you might like it.Go ahead and try something and don’tblame me. Tell me if it works.

The important thing about all of this is totry something, and if you don’t like it, don’tdo it again. You will probably find that agood red wine is best with steak, and a goodwhite wine is best with chicken. Chiantigoes well with most Italian dishes, andLiebfraumilch might be good with Germanfood. I don’t know any good Mexican winethat complements tamales or tacos.

The “rules” of wine drinking don’t evenqualify as suggestions these days. But theyprobably deserve more than lip service.Respect the judgment of those who havemade mistakes before you, and think abouttheir choices before you make your ownmistake. Of course, you can always spit itout and order something else.

Clown NewsBY CHARLIE “BUCK-E” PARKER

June was a special month for me and “Sir Clarence”(Jack Scarbrough). We were invited by Concerned Care of Kansas City, a wonderful group of peo-ple who help individuals with development disabilities, to spend a day at

the Rotary Camp in Lee’s Summit, MO. Everyone in attendance enjoyed the workshops on magic and balloon

making, and especially the beanie babies that we gave them. Here are a few pic-tures that were taken that day. As you can see, everyone was having a great time, especially me and “Sir Clarence.”

Mini Model T’sBY STEPHEN HARGRAvE, SCRIBE

A lot has happened since last month. Dean Travis has returned home from Af-ghanistan. Congratulations are in order for Dean’s marriage last month to his lady, Dena. Let’s be sure to welcome her when Dean is with us again. We have

gained a new member as well. Leon Gilbert and his lady, Carla was with us for the Sugar Creek parade on the 4th. Let’s show them how we all have a good time at the Mini Model T’s.

September 1st to the 4th is the C.S.S.A. Convention at Abdullah this year. Since it is right here in town we will be competing this year. It’s been a while since we have been able to compete in the Motor Corps competitive drills so we are having practice on Sunday mornings. This is the only way that we can beat the heat. There are some venturous souls out on the parking lot at the temple on those mornings, but we are all having a good time. We haven’t been getting a lot of practicing in, but we have been getting lot of breaks for drinking in. The ice cold water and Gatorade goes down real well on those hot mornings.

Because we are going to compete, new uniform shirts and uniforms have been or-dered for all of the drivers competing this year. We need to make a good impression on all of the units when we show up on the field for our return. If you are planning to compete or go to the convention you will have to register with the temple. This is as usual. The cost is $20.00 per person unless the ladies want to go to the luncheon. The ladies will have to get together to decide if they want to go as a group. The cost is another $35.00 per person. Jared has the information on registration for the convention. The deadline is looming, so we need to start making plans.

A good time for that will be at the Mini Model T’s picnic. This will be at Macken Park in North Kansas City. It will be at one of the shelter houses on the North West side of the park. If you turn north onto Iron from Armour Blvd. (Highway 210) and go past the High School, it will be on your right side. The picnic will be 4:00 pm until whenever on August 7th. Rita and Anna have the details on what to bring, so give them a call.
