Over the Moon

Wane One is a happy fella. In fact, he’s over the moon, so to speak, about the street mural he and his crew are painting in front of the ArtsWestchester building on Mamaroneck Avenue. Wane One, the name, is actually the “tag” of Wayne Peterkin, who began his artistic career using spray cans to paint subway cars. Growing up in the Bronx where the elevated tracks were ubiqui-tous, Wane and his buddies roamed the street at night audaciously using trains as a canvas for their self-expression. What a thrill it must have been, and daring too, to have seen one’s own artwork in the public realm. Not every graffiti artist transcends this practice to build a career in the arts. But Wane One knew this was his calling. Street art was his path to graphic design, to outdoor murals to corporate branding. In fact, he’s worked with the best of the best — brands like Reebok and Sean John Menswear. Thirty-five years since those subway cars, Wane One and ArtsWestchester found their way to each other and collaborated on this wonderful public art project. Now we’re both over the moon.

Summer is an extraordinary time for the arts. Music fills our streets, artists set up their easels outside and the weather lifts our moods, inspiring us to create. ArtsWestchester has plenty in store for us this season. Whether you are interested in spending your Saturday afternoon at an exhibit on neon lights, spending your Monday in a dance class or taking your child

to a Wednesday morning storybook class, our County has something for you. I feel fortunate to have this organization in our County to inspire our residents to participate in the arts. ArtsWestchester’s monthly ArtsNews publication highlights the many cultural opportunities provided for the enjoyment of residents throughout the County. Summer will be arriving shortly, so keep track of upcoming arts and cultural programs by browsing the articles and calendar on these pages. The June issue features:

A-Capella Groups Reunite After 30 Years The Westchester Chordsmen will reunite with the Kingsmen International Barbershop Harmony Chorus of Kingsbridge, England thirty years after first performing together. On June 2, these two a-cappella groups will take the stage at White Plains Middle School for an upbeat performance of songs, comedy skits and humorous dialog. Each group will offer a variety of songs before they join together for the night’s finale. The Chordsmen’s repertoire typically includes doo-wop, Broadway, gospel, contemporary and more in addition to traditional barbershop tunes. The Chorus plans to extend the reunion with a future performance in England. For more, visit chordsmen.org.

Copland House Director Michael Boriskin Brought Bernstein to D.C.

Michael Boriskin, Artistic and Executive Director of the Copland House, recently joined Jamie Bernstein, the daughter of legendary composer Leonard Bernstein, for a performance at the Phillips Collection in Washington, D.C. “Late Night with Leonard Bernstein,” a show intended to tell the story of Bernstein’s life, was part of a citywide centennial celebration of the composer’s 100th birthday. “Late Night…” is set at night when Bernstein, a known insomniac, created many of his beloved works. Also performing were soprano Amy Burton and fellow pianist John Musto. The show included audio and video excerpts and a slideshow of rare photographs, as well as accounts by Jamie Bernstein about her father.

Seth Soloway Named Director at The Performing Arts Center, Purchase College

Purchase College President Thomas J. Schwarz recently announced the appointment of Seth Soloway as Director of the College’s The Performing Arts Center (PAC). Soloway has been Interim Director at PAC for the past two years. His vision for its future includes “doubling down” on viewing and treating PAC as an arts incubator. Soloway says he would do this by “welcoming more residencies, and combining [the Center’s] Arts in Education with mainstage programs in significant ways.” According to Barry Pearson, Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, Soloway’s work “has been instrumental in setting The PAC on a path that will greatly enhance the academic and educational life of the college.”

More than 300 in Attendance for Paraguayan Independence Day

ArtsWestchester’s Folk Arts program, in partnership with the Consulate General of Paraguay, the White Plains Public Library and the NY Paraguayan Soccer Association, recently celebrated Paraguay Independence Day. The event, the first-ever Paraguayan cultural festival in the County, included harpists, guitarists, folkloric dance troupes and traditional Paraguayan food and drink. Among those in attendance were Juan Buffa, the Paraguayan Ambassador to New York, and Julio Cesar Arriola Ramirez, the Permanent Representative of Paraguay.

Artists Explore Humans’ Relationship with Nature in Today’s Digital EraAs the world becomes more high-tech, humans rely on that technology to experience nature. For instance, audiences watch the natural world on television programs and networks such as National Geographic. Children explore virtual lands in digital games like Minecraft and can plant their own crops in FarmVille. Pelham Art Center (PAC)’s current exhibition suggests that the more technology brings humans closer to nature, the easier it may be to overlook the idea that it also provides humans with a mediated, simulated or augmented version of real-life nature.

The exhibiting artists in A Rose is a Screen is a Rose respond to today’s consuming digital world and investigate how that world has reshaped the way in which humans experience nature. The exhibition features four artists who each explore this topic through digital and analog technologies, such as building physical installations and enhancing reality. Roxana Azar captures the beauty of nature in her uncanny digital photographs of plant-like beings, while also reminding the viewer of the increasing danger of climate change. Richard Munaba’s screen installations are immersed with dirt, plants and jungles, and aim to make viewers more aware of their estranged relationship with nature. In Paula Morales’s pieces, the screen is a portal to nature, yet also a flattened version of the real 3D world. Sacha Vega transforms a single image of clouds into a retro viewfinder, a life-sized mesh screen and floor surface. Her works invite visitors to see, touch and walk on clouds. The exhibition, on view through June 30, draws inspiration from writer Gertrude Stein’s line “a rose is a rose is a rose…” and uses screens as a platform, a tool and a foundation for artworks. White Plains Public Library presents “The Artists’ Loft,” an interdisciplinary series of live events led by musician Art Bennett. On June 13 and 27, visual artist Lana Yu will join Bennett for his two-hour sessions. In the spirit of jazz lofts of the 1970s, these sessions rely on two artistic disciplines that interact in a creative interplay during parallel workshops. For instance, in a previous session, hip-hop artist Lord Judah helped people to write lyrics while Bennett and his fellow musicians played music. Then, the musicians backed the participants as they took turns at the microphone. During Yu’s sessions in June, the artist will educate people on painting

techniques and composition methods for the first hour. In the second hour, Yu will lead people as they paint in conversation with the music that is played by Bennett and other musicians. The collaborative nature of “The Artists’ Loft” spurs performance, improvisation and creative partnership. This program, which is supported by an ArtsWestchester Arts Alive grant, takes place in the Library’s newly-renovated café space and community room. For more info, visit whiteplainslibrary.org.

Jacob Burns Film Center’s “Retro Revival” series, which screens remastered and restored cinema, kicks off its summer season with “Back on the Big Screen.” This selection of nine beloved movies from 1952-1982 brings Hollywood classic films back to their original full-screen glory. From June 6 through 28, film buffs can get a glimpse of their star-studded favorites from a seat in the Center’s state-of-the-art theaters. Singin’ in the Rain launches the series on June 6. A reception in the Jane Peck Gallery will follow the screening. Several films will be presented in new 4K restoration: The Bridge of the River Kwai (June 13); a director’s cut of Close Encounters of the Third Kind (June 21); Lawrence of Arabia (June 25); and Spartacus (June 28). A Blade Runner: The Final Cut screening will show the definitive version of director Ridley Scott’s sci-fi adventure on June 20. Rounding out this season of the series are The French Connection, which was the first R-Rated movie to ever win the Best Picture Academy Award (June 11), and Alfred Hitchcock’s 1950s mind-bender Vertigo (June 14). First-Ever ArtsWestchester Triennial On View in White PlainsArtists have garnered inspiration from the Hudson River Valley for decades. Now, ArtsWestchester has looked to artists who are living and working in this region for inspiration for its first-ever ArtsWestchester Triennial exhibition. The show, on view through July 28, surveys “what’s now and what’s new” in the Hudson Valley contemporary art scene.

Co-Curator Paola Morsiani of the Brodsky Center at Rutgers University, stressed the inherent purpose of a triennial showcase: “It is about discovering new work, even of those who live around the corner from you. The ArtsWestchester Triennial provides a unique occasion for coming together and discovering the rich variety of backgrounds, ideas that inform processes, projects, and artworks by both up-and-coming and established artists.”

Of the more than 90 nominated, only 15 artists, who represent six counties, were chosen for the exhibition. Though they are all based in the Hudson Valley region, many of their journeys began elsewhere, including Colombia, El Salvador, South Korea and China. The exhibited artists often address their cultural roots in their works. For example,

ceramic sculptor Natalia Arbelaez explores her Colombian-American identity in her sculptures, with references to colonization, cultural inheritance, memory and immigration. Gary Burnley interlaces traditional and historical portraits in his collages, challenging traditional modes of portraiture and posing questions about how images shape the viewers’ attitudes about race in America.

Explains Co-Curator Marc Straus of Marc Straus Gallery: “We only got to choose 15, but there are thousands of artists in this region… Doing a triennial is an enormous service to the arts community because there is tremendous talent out there [in the Hudson Valley].” The once-every-three-years art event will become a mainstay of ArtsWestchester’s exhibition programming. Ballets With a Twist brings the Hollywood glamour and modern-day pop influences of its Cocktail Hour: The Show to international audiences. The performance is expertly designed to adapt to each performance space, from dinner theaters

to nightclubs. On June 16, the blend of original choreography, music and costume design will take the stage at White Plains Performing Arts Center (WPPAC). Choreographer/Creator Marilyn Klaus offers a program of dancing “drinks,” such as the James Bond spy-inspired number “Martini” and the bluegrass Kentucky Derby-inspired “Mint Julep.” The WPPAC performance will also feature the premiere of a new piece called “Soirée.” This cabaret-style floor-show is set to an original score by composer and former Cyndi Lauper keyboardist Stephen Gaboury, who incorporates influences from jazz, classical, pop and more. The company comes to life in costumes that were designed specially by Catherine Zehr for each number in the program. For more info, visit: wppac.com.

On June 2, OCA Westchester Hudson Valley will present its annual Asian American Heritage Festival at Kensico Dam Plaza in Valhalla. The day-long festival aims to educate audiences about artistic customs of the Asian culture, including traditional dance and song, activities and foods. Professional artists will share the stage with children’s dancing troupes dressed in traditional garb. A performance of Bian Lian, or face-changing, will demonstrate an ancient practice associated with the Chinese opera. During Bian Lian, a performer changes their painted masks so seamlessly that it is undetectable by the viewer. Martial arts will also be showcased, particularly a lion dance, a practice that is believed to bring about good fortune, during which a larger-than-life lion’s costume, operated by more than one dancer, mimics the animal’s intricate movements. Additional children’s activities teach crafts and trades of the Asian culture, such as calligraphy, Chinese paper cutting and origami. Artworks by More Than 100 Artists on Display During Peekskill Open Studios WeekendFor the 21st year, Peekskill Arts Alliance (PAA) presents a weekend of extensive arts activities throughout the City of Peekskill on June 2 and 3, including open artists’ studios, group exhibitions, pop-up exhibitions and collaborative events. A catalog, available online and at the North Division Street gazebo, details a map of participating artists and venues. A variety of mediums are on display, from Alison Pascoe’s stained glass and Jessica Dubin’s ceramics to Sarah Haviland’s sculptures and Maureen Winzig’s watercolor and oil paintings. According to PAA President Robin Kline, the event gives the Peekskill artists’ community “the opportunity to share [their] creative endeavors with visitors from within Peekskill, and to showcase Peekskill to visitors from surrounding areas.”

An Off the Beaten Track exhibition at Westchester Community College’s Center for Digital Arts displays work from Peekskill artists whose studios are not in the downtown area. A new “Artisan’s Boutique” at Scarlett Antonia’s studio offers items like pottery, photographs and jewelry for sale. Free admission to Hudson Valley Center for Contemporary Art gives visitors a view of the Center’s current exhibitions, including Between I and Thou and Pop Revolution. Painters and poets will collaborate on spontaneous art creations at Division Street Guitars on Sunday. A pop-up “Truck Stop Gallery” transforms rented trucks into creative galleries on Central Avenue. This June, a 3-part workshop series in Mount Vernon invites audiences to learn Ghanaian dance from world-renowned husband-and-wife performers Richard Dwomoh and Gloria Nyame. The workshops, led by Dwomoh and Nyame, are presented by

ArtsWestchester in partnership with the City of Mount Vernon, the Mount Vernon Public Library and the Mount Vernon Boys & Girls Club (MVBGC). Dwomoh and Nyame, who are known for their elegant movements in the Ashanti dances of Kete and Adowa, will guide participants through the dance techniques and styles from diverse ethnic groups in Ghana, West Africa. Workshops will be held on June 2 and 9 at the MVBGC and on June 16 at the Doles Center. The program will culminate with an outdoor West African dance and drumming concert on June 21 at Mount Vernon’s City Hall Plaza. Performers will include the workshop participants, the NY Ghanaian Drum and Dance Unity Ensemble, Marion Archer’s Revelators and the First Ghana SDA Church Choir. West African Dance and Drumming Workshops and Culminating Performance in Mount Vernon

School may be out for the summer, but according to New Rochelle Public Library, this doesn’t mean that the learning needs to end just yet. On June 23, the library will celebrate the kick-off of its annual summer reading program with an outdoor event. Tents in Ruby Dee Park at Library Green will offer activities such as rock painting and other crafts, and a performance by Shinbone Alley Stilt Band. Band members, while on stilts, perform lifts and turns, dance, and play swinging jazz music. As these festivities take place, children in grades Pre-K through five, are encouraged to register for the summer reading program inside the Library. These children will receive a logbook to track their reading progress throughout the summer for the chance to win prizes. Through the program and its theme, Libraries Rock!, children will receive encouragement, as well as the access to books, which will help them to continue with their education throughout the summer months. Teaching Artist Dene Ross Combined Traditional Skills with Technology in Yonkers School This past semester, teaching artist Dene Ross combined history, the arts and technology in a way that engaged and encouraged students at Riverside High School in Yonkers. During her arts residency, she worked with students in Laughton Huggins’s technology class to bridge the gap between digital and handmade practices. Her project introduced students to the history of portrait photography and papermaking. Hands-on activities followed, incorporating skills learned earlier in the semester – creating their own handmade paper and taking self-portraits in a makeshift photo studio in the classroom. On their computers, they infused their own personalities into their portraits by using Adobe Photoshop to add custom backgrounds, and designed borders for their mats. The designs were laser-cut onto the mat; the photos printed onto the handmade paper.

The project, which was supported by one of ArtsWestchester’s Arts Alive grants, synced with the class’s existing curriculum. Huggins explained: “The students walked away [after the project] with a lot of pride because it’s something they physically created, and they were able to use their new computer skills.”

Ross reflected on that sense of pride as well. “One of the students was dejected one day and deleted his project photos,” she recalled. Ross encouraged him to take new photos that highlighted his personality. “At the end of the class, he came up to me, proud of his new work, and said ‘thank you so much for encouraging me.’ To me, that shows just how much the students really got out of the project.”

Through Ross’s residency, students were able to apply new knowledge of photography and papermaking to the technology tools they learned in class, and ultimately see all of the pieces come together in a creative personalized project of which they were proud.

When ArtsWestchester’s gallery is open, so is its gallery gift shop, The Shop at ArtsWestchester. As the organization’s current exhibition recently went on view (see page A7), the Shop launched a new selection of items for sale. The Shop at ArtsWestchester displays works by more than thirty designers and artists, including jewelry, catalogs, organic soaps and art prints. These handcrafted items are often reflective of themes of the organization’s current and most recent exhibitions. In addition, seven exhibiting Triennial artists have artworks available for sale.

On every third Wednesday of the month, the Shop also hosts a “Shop & Sip” event that showcases the work of several new designers and artists in a special happy hour pop-up shopping experience. Street Mural by Artist Wane One Unveiled in White Plains In the 20 years since ArtsWestchester acquired its historic neo-classical White Plains building, it has nurtured the creative energy that fills its gallery, studios and even hallways. Home to artists and creative businesses, and host to performances, exhibitions and educational workshops, this nine-floor building at 31 Mamaroneck Avenue has been an incubator for the arts in Westchester County. In celebration of its twentieth year in the building, the organization is now letting the creative energy of its building spill onto the streets just outside its doors.

In collaboration with the City of White Plains, ArtsWestchester commissioned a new street mural by famed street artist Wane One. The 1,650-square-foot installation, titled Brighter Colors | Better Life, features deconstructed geometric shapes in vibrant colors and hues, and is inspired by the organization’s enduring presence in the County. The artist explains: “The secret to longevity is adaptability and transformation…the shifting colors [in the mural] are a nod to the transformative power of the arts as embodied by ArtsWestchester.”

According to White Plains Mayor Thomas Roach, “these kinds of projects generate excitement, spark conversation and force us all to think about and view our city in a different light.” The public art piece serves to help designate ArtsWestchester’s presence in the City, inviting the community to view the mural and then take their wonder into the building to explore the goings-on inside the gallery as well.

Artists Attend Intellectual Property Seminar

ArtsWestchester recently hosted an educational seminar on the topic of protecting artists’ ownership and intellectual property. The event was co-sponsored by the Committee on Fine Arts and the Entertainment, Arts & Sports Law Section of the New York State Bar Association, along with law firm Wilson Elser. The majority of the attendees were practicing artists, with gallerists, appraisers and other art market professionals in attendance. An introduction was given by Nisa Ojalvo, Vice President of Legal Affairs at LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton. Presenters included: Olivera Medenica, a partner at Dunnington Bartholow & Miller LLP, who discussed copyright protection as it applies to the visual arts; Jill A. Ellman, an attorney at M. Ross & Associates LLC, whose presentation covered licensing, a topic that is relevant to artists who require protection of their intellectual property rights; and the seminar’s organizer Jana S. Farmer, of counsel at Wilson Elser, who discussed artists’ moral rights and provided an overview of the protections offered by the Visual Artists Rights Act of 1990.
