My name is Jimmy and I am an addict. I have struggled with this real-ity for a very long period of my life; maybe 20 years or more. It started with smoking pot. I first discovered marijuana when

I was about 13 years old. Like most people, the first time I tried it, I didn’t get high. It was only after the first few times that my body could no longer continue to store it in my fat cells, then, the effects started to hit me. Once I experienced this wonderful escape I wanted to do only one thing, get high again. At first it was parties and some-times after school (most times). Very soon after that I started buying my own “stash”. At thirteen I had almost $1,500.00 in my bank account- paper route money- it went up in smoke in just a few years. It was then I realized I was a certified pothead. I thought that was so cool. My ego told me I could

quit whenever I wanted to. It’s a lie most pot smokers really believe. Things seem to get done when I

was stoned. I started with a lot of ideas and my writing took off. I wrote so much poetry and short stories, even some plays. The thing was, I never got around to finishing anything. The next day I would look at my writings, sit down to correct them, get stoned and write something new. Very few items came to completion. I never really got things done when I got high. It was an illusion of grandiosity that my stories made sense or my poems had meaning or cohesion. I know some people can get things done when they are stoned, I am not one of these people. My laundry would pile up, my room would become a pigsty and any responsible behaviour, quickly was eroded. School suffered because it became uninteresting. Most importantly about all of this,

is that I have asthma. I was born with it. People who think marijuana is help-ful to anyone with a lung condition are in a state of absolute fantasy. If your lungs are sensitive to irritants, how can you possibly hold to the idea that smoking ANYTHING can be helpful. But it didn’t stop me. I still smoked pot, and lots of it, and for a long time. Today as a direct result of this deci-sion I have a serious terminal condi-tion called Chronic Obstructive Pul-monary Disease or C.O.P.D. Even with that diagnosis in 2007, my attempts at permanently quitting have been unsuc-cessful. To further add to my misery, I have developed manic depression, mild schizophrenia and a multitude of mood disorders. Just before Christmas I weighed 210 lbs. today I am down to 175 lbs, just by being ac-tive in my life. The greatest enemy of the Potheads logic is that, “I can stop whenever I want to, it’s easy.” What pot does though, is it changes your brain chemistry into a state absolute denial and hostile refusal that a problem even exists. And if you try to take the pot away from the Pothead you will wit-ness: frustration, irritation, outbursts, bitterness and an evil undercurrent of passive aggressive behaviour that will astound you.
