Together We Save Energy Saving Tools Since debuting in 2009, the Touchstone

Energy® Together We Save website has focusedon helping electric cooperative members make easy improvements, such as compact f luorescents and ENERGY STAR appliances. It’s been a success, but after five years, the folksat Touchstone Energy came to a realization.

While the original Energy Savings HomeTour is still available at TogetherWeSave.com,

“The Home Efficiency Analysis Tool t ypically gets into more detail—they’re projects you’re going to have to spend a little more time and money on,” Alan Shedd said. “It’s everything from insulating and air sealing, to sealing ductwork, to information on water heating.”

To get started, the interactive tool “asks you questions about your house—things like where do you live, the size of the home, the st yle of construction,” Shedd explained. “Once you’ve provided that information, it gives you access to a series of what we call ‘recipe cards.’”

Food recipes tell you how complicated they are, what to buy, how to combine ingredients and what the finished product should look like. “These cards basically follow the same approach,” Shedd said. “You might print out one ofthese sheets and take it with you to the home-improvement store so you knowwhat materials to get.”

The single-page, two-sided information sheets offer a wealth of information, including a guide for consumers on whether a project is truly for do-it-yourselfers or if you need a pro.

A Few Ways to Lower EnergyCosts as the TemperatureDrops:

It’s Easy and It Can Save You Money!

“We really needed somethingfor those folks who are ready togo to the next step, that’s whywe’ve created the new HomeEfficiency Analysis Tool.”

—Alan Shedd, director, residential and commercial energyprograms for the national alliance of co-ops

1. Keep your thermostat at the lowestcomfortable setting. Each degree above68 degrees, you will see a cost increase of approximately five percent.

2. Keep furnaces and heat pumps in goodcondition. Change filters regularly.

3. Keep your fireplace flue closed when not in use.

4. In rooms with high ceilings, reverse the circulation direction of ceiling fans in order to push down warmer air.

5. Lower the thermostat if you’re going tobe away for more than eight hours.

6. Make sure the thermostat is not affected by a cold draft.
