April / May 2019 Dear Friends,
Wayne Township Seniors support our military! We are proud of the many residents of Wayne Township that have served our country and will proudly display their pictures on the walls of our remodeled Center. We also support all people in the military, and especially those in harm’s way. We have dedicated the month of MAY as a collection month for OSOT, Operation Suppor t our Troops.
At the April 30 meeting, representatives from OSOT will speak at the meeting about what the comfort packages mean to our soldiers. Lists of desired supplies will be available and we will accept donations all month, ending at the May 28 meeting. Some soldiers do not have family and what we send is the only contact they may have with their fellow Americans.
Judy Shanahan spearheads our volunteer effor ts for the solders, including monthly letter wr itings, the making and stuffing of Christmas stockings and the comfort care collection. Judy has received many letters from soldiers in harm’s way, thanking Wayne Township for cards and care packages. These men and women sacrifice so much for our country. Thank you in advance for supporting this deserving project!
XO Gayle

Lunch and Pullman Historic District Bus Tour Thursday, May 30, 2019
Chicago, IL
This is our first trip with “Chicago’s Finest Tours” and Dan has planned a great itinerary for us.
We head to Chicago to celebrate the achievements of Chicago manufacturing giants. The Pullman District is the tour’s main feature and America’s first Planned Industrial Community dating back to the 1880s. For many, the name Pullman is synonymous with luxury train cars. While this is accurate, the Pullman legacy extends well beyond these elegant mansions on wheels. Pullman became a doorway to Civil Rights, Unionization, Planned Communities, and so much more.
Prior to the tour is lunch at Harborside Golf Course.

Dear Seniors,
Happy Spring! With the rising cost of medical care and insurance, it’s so important to take advantage of all the benefits you are entitled too. Many of you may not know that there are long term care benefits available to all veterans who served at least 90 days in the military and their surviving spouse. Veterans do not need to have a service related disability to qualify. If the veteran or surviving spouse needs assistance performing everyday activities such as bathing, feeding, dressing or using the bathroom, they may qualify; it’s worth the time to inquire.
The local Veterans Chapter is located at: Illinois Department Of Veterans Affairs DuPage County Building 421 N. County Farm Road, Rm. 2-600A Wheaton, IL 60187
Their phone number is 630-690-9449; they are open 8:30am to 4:30pm, M-F.
If you have any Medicare concerns, please schedule an appointment with one of our S.H.I.P. Counselors.

The Glyphosate Horror
When we buy fruits and vegetables, there is usually a little sticker on them with a bunch of numbers.
The first digit of the number is the one you have to pay attention to.
If it begins with an 8 it is definitely genetically modified.
If it begins with a 3 it is likely genetically modified.
If it begins with a 4 it was conventionally grown with synthetic fertilizers and chemical pesticides. These pesticides cannot be washed off because they have been fed to the roots and not the surface of the plant.
If it begins with a 9 this is organic, high quality, the most nutritious. You should buy this like your life depends upon it because it does.
For more information, check out the literature rack in the Senior Center.

2018 Assessment Cycle Completed My staff and I completed the 2018 Assessments in early October, 2018. All properties in Wayne Township received a 1.0415 Township Equalization Factor to bring the median level of assessments to 33 1/3% (one-third) of market value, as required by state statute. An Equalization Factor does not cause property taxes to increase or decrease because it is applied uniformly to all properties in the Township.
The Equalization Notice was published on October 17, 2018, and the final assessment appeal date was November 16, 2018. Board of Review appeal hearings were held during January, 2019, and final Board of Review decisions will be mailed on March 20, 2019.
We are currently working on the 2019 General Assessment. In the General Assessment, which occurs every four years, each neighborhood will be reviewed, and all property owners will receive General Assessment notices. We will complete the General Assessment later this year.
Senior Citizens Homestead Exemption; New Procedure The Supervisor of Assessments will mail Senior Homestead Exemption status forms to previous applicants in late April. Any changes in owner-occupants, such as due to a move or the death of an owner, must be noted on the card and the card returned. If there have been no changes in owner-occupants, the cards do not need to be returned.
If you are turning 65 during 2019, you can apply for this exemption at any time during the year. Please bring proof of age (driver’s license) and proof of ownership (Warranty Deed or Deed-In-Trust with Trust Agreement).
All other exemption forms, including the Senior Freeze, Disabled Persons and Disabled Veterans’ Exemptions need to be returned as in previous years.
Senior Citizens Assessment Freeze Exemption This exemption is available to Senior Citizens 65 and

A Message From the Supervisor 630-231-7140
Hello Seniors!
I want to thank all of you who helped tell the Illinois Legislature to stop messing with Townships! The bills that were introduced have mostly stalled but I am keeping a vigilant eye on their status. Consolidating townships is not the answer that many seek for property tax relief. The average savings on your bill would be $16. Hardly the benefit they profess it to be as many of our great programs would cease to exist. I keep inviting the elected officials to come to the Township so they can see for themselves the benefits we offer the community.
Construction is moving forward. You will be seeing much activity around our building. It is important that you pay attention when coming to the Township. There will be marked areas where you will need to avoid. Please ask any questions as the expansion proceeds.
Be Safe, Randy Ramey, Wayne Township Supervisor

Food Pantry Expansion Project- We are very excited that our food pantry expansion is finally under way! During this time, the Food Pantry will be working on a very limited capacity but we hope to continue distributing produce and bread until the expansion is complete. You will receive monthly updates, as always.
Clothes Closet- Due to the food pantry and senior center renovation projects, our clothes closet is closed for distribution, therefore, we will not be accepting any donations of clothing and household items until further notice. The renovation project will also include a larger clothes closet area where we hope to offer larger quantities of new and gently used clothes, shoes and household items to families in need.
Volunteers- We are looking for new volunteers to join our dedicated food pantry team! Positions are available on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and every 3rd Thursday of each month. Candidates must have excellent people skills and enjoy working with an ethnically diverse population. Interviews will take place during the months of May and June. Please call our office if you are interested.
Easter Basket Project- We are in need of donations of Easter baskets for low-income children ages 1 to 12. You may donate funds, basket with goodies or basket supplies (baskets, candy, plastic eggs, etc.). Please drop off donations by April 12th.
Energy Assistance Program Ends- The Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program will stop taking applications at the end of May. Do not miss this opportunity to receive a one-time grant toward your Nicor and Com Ed bills; eligibility factors apply. Please
