MONTREAL IMPACT The Montréal Impact return to action after another week off, their last match a 1-1 draw with the Columbus Crew on April 14 at Stade Saputo in a match delayed a day by a snowstorm. The Impact are in a tie for second place in the Eastern Conference with 13 points from 6 matches. LAST MATCH

The game's two goals came four minutes apart, and both of the spectacular variety. The Impact pulled ahead in the 68th minute when Sanna Nyassi’s failed volley attempt on the edge of the box turned into an assist for Marco Di Vaio, who ripped home a thunderous shot from some 22 yards out.

But the Crew were level in the 72nd minute. Dominic Oduro showed impeccable control in latching onto a deflected cross and looping it in front of Hassoun Camara, before sending a left-footed finish to the top right corner of Troy Perkins' goal from the left side of the box.

Impact head coach Marco Schällibaum made one change to the team that suffered a 2-0 defeat by Sporting Kansas City at Sporting Park. Alessandro Nesta came back into central defense in place of Matteo Ferrari.

MONTREAL IMPACT (4-1-4-1): Troy Perkins - Hassoun Camara, Alessandro Nesta, Karl Ouimette, Jeb Brovsky - Patrice Bernier, Andres Romero (Sanna Nyassi 67), Davy Arnaud, Felipe Martins, Justin Mapp (Andrew Wenger 80) - Marco Di Vaio (Maxim Tissot 88).

TEAM NEWS Coming off their first defeat of the season after opening the campaign with four consecutive victories, the

Impact were held to their first draw of the year. “Teams are going to try to come out of here with a draw,” said assistant coach Mauro Biello, who handled

touchline duties in place of the suspended Marco Schällibaum. “They’ll try to reduce space in the middle, and we have to find space on the sides and in deep. In the second half, that’s what we did with Justin [Mapp] and Sanna [Nyassi] on the flanks. They created difficulties for the other team.”

There was a late change to the starting lineup as center back Matteo Ferrari suffered a calf strain in pre-match warmups and could not go. He will miss at least the next few weeks with the injury.

MLS GAME INFORMATION

Karl W. Ouimette made his third consecutive start – his first three of his MLS career – as a late replacement for Ferrari.

“The mentality is different because you think you’re starting on the bench. The preparation is a little different as well, but I’ve always said you have to be ready at all times in case you get your number called, and I was good to go,” said Ouimette. “… I think we played pretty well, especially in the second half when we were able to create more scoring chances. Their goal came off of a half-chance from an improbable strike, but other than that, we had the better of them.”

Marco Di Vaio scored his third goal in the last four games. He has scored the last three goals for the Impact in league play.

The Impact have still allowed less than a goal per game, tied for the third-best defensive record in the league and one of six teams allowing under a goal per game.

“I wouldn’t say it’s [the back] four, it’s more like five, six, seven guys that have done a solid job … The guys in front of me are very knowledgeable, very experienced,” said goalkeeper Troy Perkins. “For me, it doesn’t change a lot. I’m still going to tell them the same things. I’m still going to yell at them. I’m still going to do all that, because it keeps me involved.”

Maxim Tissot made his full professional debut, coming on in the 88th minute, one day after celebrating his 21st birthday. “My mother kept telling me all week that it was destiny,” said Tissot. “She felt that it was my fate to play my first game on my birthday weekend and it happened. The first thought I had as I got on the field was of my parents. They were in the stands for the game.”

On Wednesday, Toronto FC opened defense of their four consecutive Canadian Championships with a 2-0 win against the Impact in the first leg of their semifinal series at BMO Field. The return match is May 1 at Stade Saputo. Doneil Henry gave TFC the lead in the 49th minute, then Andrew Wiedemann finished off a Luis Silva nine minutes from time for the clincher.

Here’s the Impact team: Evan Bush; Maxim Tissot, Karl W. Ouimette, Hassoun Camara, Jeb Brovsky; Patrice Bernier, Sanna Nyassi (Andrea Pisanu 77'), Calum Mallace (Daniele Paponi 60'), Collen Warner, Justin Mapp (Andrés Romero 60'); Andrew Wenger

CHICAGO FIRE The Chicago Fire won their second game of the season, getting a late goal for a 1-0 win against the Columbus Crew on Saturday evening at Toyota Park. The Fire are in a tie for seventh place in the Eastern Conference with 7 points from 7 matches. LAST MATCH

A throw-in gave the Fire their breakthrough. Jalil Anibaba sent it long into the penalty area, and Austin Berry’s flicked header found Jeff Larentowicz charging on from five yards out and he headed it into the back of the net.

Crew goalkeeper Andy Gruenebaum was credited with six saves for the match, all coming in the second half before the match-winner. Fire goalkeeper Sean Johnson was not called upon to make a single save.

Fire head coach Frank Klopas made one change to the team that dropped a 2-1 decision to the Houston Dynamo at BBVA Compass Stadium. Patrick Nyarko came into the team in place of Daniel Paladini.

CHICAGO FIRE (4-2-3-1): Sean Johnson - Wells Thompson, Austin Berry, Jalil Anibaba, Gonzalo Segares - Jeff Larentowicz, Logan Pause - Patrick Nyarko (Daniel Paladini 87), Chris Rolfe, Joel Lindpere (Dilly Duka 82) - Sherjill MacDonald (Maicon Santos 78).

TEAM NEWS The Fire uncorked a season-high 21 attempts at goal; midfielder Jeff Larentowicz had the club’s single-game

high this season with five. “I think we had a different purpose today. We needed the win and we played like it. We played with [a little]

desperation; we played like we needed the points,” said Patrick Nyarko. “It was one of those games that you’re thinking at one point, ‘here we go again, it’s not going to happen again today.’ But the guys persevered, and kept pushing.”

For Larentowicz, his goal was the first for the club after coming over in an offseason signing from the Colorado Rapids. “Definitely when Jeff's header went in, there was relief,” Logan Pause said. “We knew that we needed to be patient and we knew that we were controlling the game and we were creating chances. Then, finally, one bounced our way.”

After conceding seven goals in the previous three matches, the Fire recorded their second clean sheet of the season as they kept the Crew without a single attempt on target for the entire match (and just six total shots for the game).

“You look at the season so far and we have given up early goals, or even the first goal. it's difficult. Even though we have showed that we can come back, especially last year, it gets difficult at times,” said Klopas. “ … We defended well overall. It was good to get the goal late in the game to pull the win. We had a very good start to the second half. We created chances but it was also important to defend well. It was key not to push forward without discipline.”

MLS GAME INFORMATION

After being held out of the starting lineup for two matches, Patrick Nyarko was able to return to the first team, resuming his wide midfield role.

“With Patrick we wanted to isolate him because of his pace. Anytime we have the ball if we can play to him quick or switch the point of attack where he can get opportunities 1v1,” said Klopas. “I thought he was fantastic, he created a lot chances. We got in good spots in the final third basically through him in his running off the ball and ability to beat players.”

After being involved in each one of the Fire’s goals over the previous two games – scoring one and assisting on three – Daniel Paladini returned to the substitute’s bench, coming on for the final three minutes.

“I thought Joel [Lindpere] played well, he worked hard. I wanted to get Patrick in there because of his pace and his ability to stretch the field with us,” said Klopas. “Danny has played well. I think he is a guy that when he gets it he helps us with possession. He comes inside more. But I wanted that matchup with Patrick on one side. Joel has played well and in Houston. You have to make some decisions, they are not easy. I felt the guys we went with and came in played very well.”

The Fire will host the Impact in the second and third legs of the series on Saturday, Aug. 10 and Saturday, Sept. 28. The two squads met twice during the 2012 season. The Fire battled back and used a 71st minute Dominic Oduro equalizer to earn a road point in front of a record-setting crowd of 58,912 in Montreal’s MLS debut at Olympic Stadium March 17. In the home leg, Alvaro Fernandez, Sherjill MacDonald and Alex scored as the Fire rallied and defeated the Impact 3-1 at Toyota Park Sept. 15. The Impact, who had a bye this past weekend, most recently played the Columbus Crew to a 1-1 draw at Stade Saputo April 14. The Impact face Toronto FC on Wednesday, April 24 in the Amway Canadian Championship tournament at BMO Field on Wednesday, April 24. QUICK KICKS vs. Montreal Impact (4-1-1; 13 pts.) • The Fire hold a 1-0-1 all-time regular season record against the Impact, including a 0-0-1 record in matched played in Montreal. • This will be the first match for the Fire at Stade Saputo. • The Impact are 2-0-1 at Stade Saputo this season. • Defender Hunter Jumper made his professional debut in Montreal when he entered the match in the 68th minute for Gonzalo Segares March 17, 2012 at Stade Saputo.

A LOOK AT THE FIRE The Chicago Fire (2-4-1, 7 pts.) enter their 16th season of MLS play after posting a 17-11-6 record, earning 57 points, tied with the 2000 season for the highest point total in club history. Continuity is key for head coach Frank Klopas this season as the team returns 19 players from the 2012 squad that qualified for the playoffs for the first time since 2009, including veterans Logan Pause, Patrick Nyarko and Gonzalo Segares. Offseason acquisitions Jeff Larentowicz, Joel Lindpere, Maicon Santos and Dilly Duka bolster the roster for the Men in Red. Sean Johnson returns for his fourth campaign with the Fire. Reigning MLS Rookie of the Year Austin Berry is set to pair with German World Cup veteran Arne Friedrich in central defense. The strike tandem of Sherjill MacDonald and 2012 Fire MVP and Golden Boot winner Chris Rolfe will serve as the scoring force for the Fire in 2013. FIRE – MONTREAL IMPACT CONNECTIONS Impact midfielder Justin Mapp spent seven seasons with the Fire. Acquired in a trade from D.C. United on Dec. 26, 2002, Mapp made 174 regular season appearances from 2003 to 2010, winning the Supporters Shield in 2003 and the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup in 2003 and 2006. Both players were part of the 2006 Chicago Fire PDL side that took the Great Lakes Division crown with a 14-2-0 regular season record. CHICAGO FIRE MIDFIELDER VICTOR PINEDA NAMED TO U.S. U-20 TRAINING CAMP ROSTER The Chicago Fire Soccer Club announced Monday that midfielder Victor Pineda has been selected by U.S. Under-20 Men’s National Team head coach Tab Ramos for training camp at the U.S. Soccer Federation National Training Center located in Carson, Calif. from April 22-29. Pineda has joined the U-20s. in California and will miss the Fire’s match against the Montreal Impact at Stade Saputo April 27 at 3:00 p.m. CT (NBC Sports Network/La Ley 107.9 FM). The United States are currently preparing for the 2013 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Turkey. The United States, drawn into Group A, face Spain in Istanbul on June 21, France in Istanbul on June 24 and Ghana in Kayseri on June 27. Pineda, the first Homegrown player in Fire history, scored three goals and added one assist in six appearances for the U-20s in 2012. The Bolingbrook, Ill. product, missed the 2013 CONCACAF U-20 Championship while rehabilitating from meniscus repair surgery that he underwent Nov. 15, 2012. CHICAGO FIRE EARN LATE 1-0 VICTORY OVER COLUMBUS CREW The Chicago Fire defeated long-time Eastern Conference rivals Columbus Crew Saturday evening at Toyota Park. Midfielder Jeff Larentowicz scored his first goal in a Fire shirt, tallying the only goal of the match in the 83rd minute to give the Fire the 1-0 victory. In the fourth minute, Crew defender Tyson Wahl sent in a free kick from 40 yards out to Chad Marshall, who headed it down for Agustin Viana who slid the ball in to goal but the goal was called offside. After a scoreless first half, the Fire started the second with renewed vigor. In the 55th minute, Patrick Nyarko won the ball on the midfield line, spun his defender and headed towards goal. The fleet-footed Ghanaian found Chris Rolfe at the top of the 18 but the Kettering, Ohio native’s left-footed shot went just wide. In the 74th minute, Estonian international Joel Lindpere whipped in a corner kick that was headed out by Marshall. The clearance fell to Nyarko, who drove in a cross to a rising Austin Berry but his snap header was saved from crossing the line at the last second by Gruenebaum. The Fire’s offensive pressure would pay dividends in the 83rd minute. Defender Jalil Anibaba sent a long throw to Berry, who flicked the ball on for Larentowicz at the top of the penalty box. The Philadelphia, Penn. product nodded the ball past Gruenebaum to give the Fire the 1-0 lead. Deep into stoppage time, the Crew won a free kick 40 yards form goal. Federico Higuain whipped in a free kick that found Chad Marshall, but his header went just wide of Sean Johnson’s goal.
