General Federation of Women’s Clubs

From the President…

The month of March started out with much laughter for those who attended the General Membership meeting, with a presentation on getting rid of clutter. The speaker, Jamie Novak, had a way of helping us see our saving quirks with humor while encouraging us to change our ways.

We had a successful Author’s Luncheon on March 10. Later that day, we were honored by the Friends of the Madison Public Library at their annual Gala for the founding of their group 80 years ago. In 1938, a “concerned “citizen of Madison, Harriet Hewson, felt that a Friends group was needed to ensure the continued existence of the Madison Library. She approached the town council with her idea but it was not approved. Then she became President of the Thursday Morning Club and approached the Council again. This time the Friends group was firmly established and continues to this day. Sylvia Luber, a long time TMC member and current Chair of the Friends, opened the Honoring portion of the Gala speaking about the beginning of the Friends. *** Federation Focus *** New Jersey State Federated Women’s Clubs WWW.NJSFWC.ORG

The Thursday Morning Club submitted their ballot for the 2018-2020 State Special Project in support of the Court Appointed Special Advocates for Children (CASA of New Jersey), Inc. CASA of NJ is a statewide organization serving all 21 counties of NJ with nearly 1,900 volunteer child advocates who served 3,866 children in foster care this past year. Volunteers in CASA are more successful placing the children they represent in permanent homes faster than children without a CASA volunteer. Once the final NJSFWC vote is tallied, we will announce the results for the new state project.

The final federation fundraiser in support of PCA-NJ was a Luncheon and Basket Auction Fundraiser held on Friday, March 9, 2018 at the Woman’s Club of Montclair. TMC donated the amount of $213.00 in support of this fundraiser. Thank you to all who contributed to our “pass the can” request for donations at our March general meeting!

Eight TMC members will participate in all (or part of) the State Convention in Atlantic City beginning Monday, May 7th. Members attending will participate in workshops and special events over the course of several days. Information and highlights of the convention will be shared at a later date.

The Highlands Spring Conference Achievement Day will be held at Zeris Inn on Wed., April 11th at 10:00 a.m. This event highlights the creative talents of many district club members, and recognizes individual club achievements based upon the annual reports submitted to district chairman in January. Winners of the various categories in the Arts Achievement portion of this event are eligible for the statewide competition held at the state convention in May and participating TMC members who win at either the district and/or state level will be announced to the general membership at a later date.

The month of April is Prevent Child Abuse month. TMC will be presented with a proclamation from the Mayor and Town Council proclaiming April as Prevent Child Abuse month at the April 9th council meeting. In addition, we will be putting up pinwheels in 2 Madison locations to help raise community awareness of child abuse and in support of PCA-NJ initiatives.

Upcoming events:

Highlands District Spring Conference Achievement Day and Flower Show Wednesday, April 11, 2018 Zeris Inn, Mountain Lakes, NJ

Susan C.Packie,1st VP

NJSFWC of GFWC Convention Atlantic City, NJ May 7-9, 2018

President’s letter Continued… queried the girl-so attractive was it to her that twenty-five dollars would not have seemed too much. The coat was priced no more than twenty-five cents because it had a badly torn part which we called to her attention, suggesting that from one of the patch pockets it could be mended. She saw the possibility and purchased the coat gladly.” The Thrift Shop story will continue next month. Best wishes for a Happy Spring!

Library Gala, March 10th… Speech of Carol Schessler, TMC President

Thank you, Sylvia. I am so glad that this evening has finally arrived! When Sylvia contacted me four months ago to say that the Friends would like to honor the Thursday Morning Club at its annual gala, I was so excited. When Jim and I bought our house in Madison forty years ago, this wonderful library was a big factor in my decision making. And now, tonight, my two favorite organizations, the Thursday Morning Club and the Madison Public Library, are connected through this great honor.

When I first read about Harriet Hewson, I immediately thought how much our current members share with her. They too are determined to change things for the better, and to preserve the good things they have. The TMC was begun by a small group of women in 1896, and over one hundred and twenty-two years, we have grown to two hundred and sixty-five members, and we welcome new members each month. The membership consists of women from six states and twenty-four towns. The form of our mission changes to meet the needs of the community, but our purpose, as noted by our motto “Ich Dien/I serve,” stays the same.

We are a member of the New Jersey State Federation and the General Federation of Women’s Clubs and support their sponsored projects and charities when possible. Our Club is unique in that we own, operate, and maintain our own building, the Madison Community House. We currently have a Nursery School on the premises and operate the Before and After School Child Care program in the three Madison Elementary schools and at times in the Community House. Our House is open three hundred and sixty-five days a year, and over fifty-five thousand people use it during that time. The Madison Community House is under the direction of Janet Allocco, whom I would like to introduce. If you want to know about a program being offered, or if a room is available for a meeting, or the calendar for the next month, Janet is the one to see.

Now that you know a little more about the TMC and the building at 25 Cook Avenue, please come by and visit. We are always happy to show visitors our home and the home of our community.

Our final speaker is Michal Holzman, a Past President and oral historian for the Club.

Interested in antiques, either a personal collection or those marketed in our area? Meet Linda Pastorino, a well-known antiques expert and local dealer, who will share her considerable expertise at the Thursday Morning Club General Meeting on Thursday, April 5th at 6:30 pm.

Pastorino is not only a dealer of antique and ethnic jewelry, artifacts, and costumes in Chester, she also designs clothes and fashion accessories, and has maintained a manufacturing company in Asia as well. She is a graduate of New York’s Parsons School of Design after developing an interest in ethnic jewelry, costumes, and objets d’art in her many trips to auction houses around the world. Her interests also “include all kinds of decorative arts spanning Europe and America.”

Her presentation will focus on the appraisal process and auction markets, how social media affects the selling of items based on a younger generational approach, and how marketing the same items differently will affect their value and selling price.

~Kathy Trombacco, Programs Chair 973 377-7034

From Public Issues… MEMORIAL DAY PARADE: Believe it or not, Spring has arrived and the long-hoped-for unofficial day of Summer is fast approaching! Olga and I attended a Memorial Day Parade Committee meeting on Tuesday, March 13th and the Veterans in charge are hard at work organizing and planning this parade. They are extremely happy to have the TMC members (as many as possible) join in the Celebration. For those of you who will be in town that day, please consider joining in the fun by "marching" the less-than-a-mile route through Madison center; bring your kids and/or grandkids with you too, if you want. This is a great opportunity to display our pride in our Community.

We have a banner behind which we will walk (or ride, if we can find a car to ride in---that is being discussed). Also, as with anything else, the Parade costs money and the Veterans will accept any donation.
