OPENING FRIDAYApart (
1/2) A young man (Josh
Danziger) begins his recovery from
amnesia, knowing only that he was
pulled out of a fire in which his home
burned down with his father in it.
Trying to connect with past relation-
ships, he meets resistance from his
longtime friend (Olesya Rulin) as well
as others. The explanations and rea-
sons behind the murky mystery
come grudgingly, and confusingly,
from co-writer and director Aaron
Rottinghaus. With Bruce McGill and
Joey Lauren Adams. Not rated, 85
minutes. At the Magnolia in Dallas.

The Kid With a Bike (1/2) This
social drama from Belgium’s
Dardenne brothers, Jean-Pierre and
Luc, follows a boy left in a state
orphanage by his father. The young-
ster maniacally tracks down his
father, who turns out unable to pro-
vide for him. A well-meaning woman
steps in to foster the young border-
line sociopath, who causes her con-
stant trouble. Gut-wrenching film
deftly examines the perils of child-
hood with all its unexpected dangers.
Not rated, 87 minutes. At the
Angelika Dallas and Plano. — B.A.
Jiro Dreams of Sushi A documen-
tary portrait of 85-year-old Jiro Ono,

Titanic in 3-D () If any film
should be redone in 3-D, it’s Titanic.
And if any filmmaker should be the
one doing the redoing, it’s James
Cameron. And so ironically, for a
film that hasn’t got an ounce of
understatement in its three-hour-
plus running time, Titanic in 3-D is
really rather subtle and finely tuned.
Cameron has stayed true to the
content of his 1997 film, the winner
of 11 Oscars including best picture
— and that includes his clunky
script filled with hokey dialogue and
broad characters. What also
remains intact is the earnestness of
Titanic, the absence of snark or
irony, and the sensation that you’re
watching a big, ambitious, good-
old-fashioned spectacle that can
withstand the test of time. With
Kate Winslet and Leonardo
DiCaprio. Rated PG-13, 195 minutes.

NOW PLAYINGAct of Valor After the rescue of a
kidnapped CIA operative leads to the
discovery of a terrorist plot against

Casa de Mi Padre (1/2) This is a
total goof, of course. That’s obvious
even before Will Ferrell, dressed in a
cowboy hat and a neckerchief sitting
astride a horse in the Mexican
desert, opens his mouth and utters
his first overly enunciated Spanish
words. But the premise, which would
have been just fine as a sketch, feels
as if it’s been stretched awfully thin
to fill an entire feature. Ferrell, speak-
ing solid Spanish (albeit with an
Americanized accent), stars as
Armando Alvarez, a dimwitted
ranchero whose successful business-
man brother, Raul (Diego Luna), is
the star of the family as far as their
father (the late Pedro Armendariz Jr.)
is concerned. Intentional continuity
errors, missing frames and cheap
production values abound. Rated R,
84 minutes. In Spanish with English
subtitles. — AP
The Hunger Games ()
Entertaining and suspenseful yet
sometimes overwrought rendition of
Suzanne Collins’ popular futuristic
novel about a young woman, Katniss
(Jennifer Lawrence), and a young
man, Peeta (Josh Hutcherson), cho-
sen to represent their district in the
annual Hunger Games, a survival
competition to the death among 24
young people. While focusing on
Katniss, director Gary Ross keeps the
blood and gore to a minimum in the
hunt sequences yet prolongs the ini-
tial phase in the Emerald City-like
capital. Should please the novel’s
fans. Rated PG-13, 142 minutes. —

By Christy LemireAP Movie Critic
You probably haven’t beenlying awake in bed at nightwondering whatever became ofStifler and Oz and the rest ofthe horny kids from the origi-nal American Pie movie.
Yet here they are, after 13years and a couple of sequels, inAmerican Reunion.
And they’re more bland thanbawdy these days.
That’s part of the joke: thatthey (and we) aren’t in highschool anymore, that we allhave to grow up and functionas adults with responsibilitiesand whatnot. We can’t spendall our time thinking lasciviousthoughts about pastry. That’sjust adolescent.
But that doesn’t make for avery fun or funny movie;instead, American Reunionrelies on cliches about nostalgia, forced tension over strainedfriendships and melodramaabout the rekindling of firstloves.
Jim and Michelle (JasonBiggs and Alyson Hannigan)
are now married with a 2-year-old son and zero sex life. Butthey return to their Michiganhometown for a 10-year highschool reunion that’s beingstaged three years late becausesupposedly no one could gettheir act together on time. It’s aplot contrivance, leave it atthat.
There they run into the oldgang, including Chris Klein asOz, who’s now a slick sportsanchor, Eddie Kaye Thomas asthe sophisticated Finch andSeann William Scott as Stifler, who’s still ... Stifler. Tara Reidand Mena Suvari show up aspersonality-free blonde robotsVicky and Heather, respective-ly. And really, the women getshort shrift here. They’re eitherboring good girls or sexuallyaggressive nymphets, with noshadings of substance or com-plexity in between.
Harold & Kumar creatorsJon Hurwitz and Hayden
Schlossberg take over as writersand directors but the sense ofunpredictability that infusedtheir own franchise never sur-faces here. Plus, this kind ofraunchy, hard-R comedy hasbeen done — and done better —countless times since AmericanPie debuted and seemed freshin 1999. Movies like The 40-Year-Old Virgin, ForgettingSarah Marshall and even therecent hockey flick Goon (whichalso stars Scott) have found away to push boundaries moredaringly while simultaneouslyfinding an unexpected, reso-nant sweetness.
American Reunion achievesneither of these extremes, andplaying intrusive, cloying musicto signal that certain momentsare supposed to be special isn’tterribly persuasive. The fewmoments the film gets right —which is true of the whole series— involve Eugene Levy as Jim’sawkward but well-intentioneddad. A grieving widower, hemisses his son and longs for thecompanionship of a womanonce more.
He has a couple of momentswith Stifler and even with thenotorious Stifler’s mom(Jennifer Coolidge, brash asever) that bring a temporaryloveliness to the proceedings.

Thomas Ian Nicholas, left, Jason Biggs, Seann William Scott, Chris Klein and Eddie KayeThomas are shown in a scene from American Reunion.

bureaucrat (Ewan McGregor) for a
seemingly crazy scheme hatched by
a Yemen sheikh (Amr Waked) to
bring salmon fishing to his arid

21 Jump Street () The TV
show that made Johnny Depp a star
is little more than a jumping-off
point for this rowdy, raunchy big-
screen update that aims for laughs
over action and delivers them inter-
mittently. Jonah Hill and Channing
Tatum are surprisingly amusing
together as newbie cops sent under-
cover as high school kids to root out
a drug ring. Directors Phil Lord and
Christopher Miller take everything —
the car chases, the shootouts, the
teen kegger, the goofy idiocy of the
characters — to the extreme. It
doesn’t work all the time, or even
most of the time, but it does work
enough of the time to make this
more enjoyable than most of
Hollywood’s unimaginative remakes
and updates. Rated R, 109 minutes.
