By Boo AllenFilm Critic
Sometimes a movie takesan unexpected turn. Andhow the movie handles
that turn could determinewhether it succeeds. In a falter-ing work, the twist may lookfalse and contrived. But whendone with a masterly touch, such as in the enchanting newFrench film Delicacy, theresults can be rewarding.
Stephane and David Foenki-nos, two minds that obviouslythought enough alike to takechances, wrote and directedDelicacy. What they attemptproves simple enough but isactually brave and daring, be-cause many places in their nar-rative could easily seem false.
But they plow ahead, gradu-ally shifting the film’s overallmood but with a noticeabletouch of grace and charm. Theshift takes the main character,Natalie (Audrey Tautou), fromgrief to, if not happiness, thenat least a recovered measure ofcontentment that would havepreviously seemed impossibleto her.
In quick succession, Nataliemeets and falls for Francois(Pio Marmai). The compatiblecouple move in together, marry, and everyone looks joyouslyhappy. She suddenly loses him,and it looks like the bulk of thefilm will be a maudlin treatiseon love, loss and recovery.
Instead, after a long mourn-ing period in which Nataliemopes around friends, familyand co-workers, she one dayrises from her desk, seeminglyin a trance, and kisses a co-
worker, Markus (FrancoisDamiens). She cannot explainher behavior, but it somehowseems natural.
Before long, she and Markusdo things together. It’s notexactly a love affair but a join-ing together of two needy souls.
The affable Markus —unkempt, balding, paunchy —brings Natalie back to life.Meanwhile, he has troublebelieving she would be inter-ested in such a schlemiel ashim.
Neither can stand their boss, and this aversion gives themmuch to laugh about and bondover. The officious boss hasalways wanted Natalie and has
made no secret about it, nomatter how uncomfortable ithas made her.
From there, the directorsFoenkinos excel in drawingboth their main characters.Natalie and Markus becomealive and real, yet believableand never cloying or super-cuteas some clumsy American pro-duction would mandate.
Subsequently, unlike inmany movies, you care aboutboth of the lovers/friends until, and including, the charmingfinal scene.

OPENING FRIDAYCasa de Mi Padre (1/2) This is a
total goof, of course. That’s obvious
even before Will Ferrell, dressed in
a cowboy hat and a neckerchief sit-
ting astride a horse in the Mexican
desert, opens his mouth and utters
his first overly enunciated Spanish
words. But the premise, which
would have been just fine as a
sketch, feels as if it’s been
stretched awfully thin to fill an
entire feature. Ferrell, speaking
solid Spanish (albeit with an
Americanized accent), stars as
Armando Alvarez, a dimwitted
ranchero whose successful busi-
nessman brother, Raul (Diego
Luna), is the star of the family as
far as their father (the late Pedro
Armendariz Jr.) is concerned. When
Raul brings home his stunningly
beautiful fiancee (Genesis
Rodriguez), it further seals his
superiority. But it turns out Raul is
a drug dealer locked in a turf war
with the powerful Onza (Gael
Garcia Bernal). Intentional continu-
ity errors, missing frames and
cheap production values abound.

‘Collage’ brings quintet of local companies
together on single stage
By Lucinda Breeding | Features Editor
“Collage 2012: Denton Dance Festival” is a bit of athrowback this year.
Lisa Racina-Torre said it’s not because the danceis stale — far from it — but because the festival brings five localdance companies together for a single performance.
In that performance, Racina-Torre said audiences will seehow Denton dancers have matured in a host of dance vocabu-laries.
Festival Ballet of North Central Texas dancers will demon-strate their study of a blend of Vaganova ballet and academyowner Hugh Nini’s techniques. Big Rig Dance Collective will goall-out in its signature cross between theater and modern dance.Green Space Arts Collective presents a New York-infused formof modern dance. Jose Zamora, a Texas Woman’s Universitydance department graduate and artistic director and founder ofCholoRock Dance Theatre, mixes music with fiery moves.Denton City Contemporary Ballet continues a tradition ofapplying everything from jazz to hip-hop to ballet sensibilities.

“This is what ‘Collage’ wasalready meant to be,” Racina-Torre said. “In the beginning, itwas a performance of Denton’sdance companies.”
For years, though, DentonCity Contemporary Balletstaged the festival with its com-pany members and invited pro-fessional — or pre-professional— dancers and companies.
In the past, Racina-Torreconsidered the festival a boonto her young and growingdancers.
Now, the artistic directorsaid the boon is the communi-ty’s. Big Rig is coming into itsown, the contemporary balletcompany has come of age witha trip to Austria for an interna-tional dance festival.
CholoRock generates energyand passion on stage, and theFestival Ballet of North CentralTexas is deepening its ballettraining under the training ofRussian dancers Eldar Valievand Lilia Valieva.
“I think Denton might not
really know how good its youngdancers are,” Racina-Torre said.“My students are better thanthey’ve ever been, and there’s somuch going on in all of the stu-dios in Denton.”
The festival includes soloperformances by Chris Koehl, ahip-hop dancer from Dallaswho has performed in Racina-Torre’s production of A Gift forEmma and a recent contestanton the Fox reality series So YouThink You Can Dance, and AyuShimuzu, a University of NorthTexas student in a culturalexchange from Kansai GaidaiUniversity in Japan.
The festival will featuresome premieres. Contempor-
ary ballet dancers Sami Nealand Brandon McGee performa duet, To the End of Love. Thehost’s youth company, DentonCity Contemporary Ballet 2performs in Whisper of theWillows and Swing. Companygraduate Jasmine Jaramillochoreographed Prosperity in aCan, inspired by Jaramillo’sstudy of the Great Depressionand the idea of just “making itthrough another day, without.”
The company will also per-form Neal’s contemporarypiece Nicest Thing about threegirls in love with the same guy,and a jazz number, Fairytale, amodern-day happily-ever-afterwith a twist. Racina-Torrerestages the dramatic tango ElTango de los Assassinos, whichpremiered last year.
The dancers take on the rolesof “the other woman” and “thejilted woman,” making for acontinuous tension betweenthe characters.
The Festival Ballet will per-form a number of classicalpieces and variations.
Shimuzu will perform varia-tions from Balanchine’s Tchai-kovsky Pas de Deux and theBlack Swan variation fromSwan Lake.
Green Space Arts Collectiveperforms The Quake, a con-temporary Celtic piece for sixdancers.
