One of 6 flats of strawberries

Member Contribution

I cannot tell a lie. I love this time of the year. The berries are in bloom and smell sooooo good. It’s strawberry season. And with that, comes strawberry shortcake, with ice cream, redi whip, and preserves. Strawberry preserves all year long.

I don’t know if you have ever had six flats of strawberries in your house at one time, but it is absolutely amazing. You walk into the house and there is a wonderful sweet smell of strawberries. There is no air freshener on the market that can compete with this fragrance.

I know that the strawberry run was covered last month, but we finally finished all of the berries not consumed by preserves, and I am so disappointed. I can’t wait for next year!!! The District Rally was this past month, and even though we were kicked out of the original rally place the rally at the Hilton turned out to be a very good venue, in my opinion. I believe it will be at the Hilton again next year. Thank you to all of those who could help us with the Games this year.

Congratulations to Nolan who won a whole bunch of money.

For those of you who were not at the last chapter gathering, we had the whole restaurant to ourselves. Literally. Jimmie’s has changed their hours and are now closing at 3:00pm. They are only opening in the evenings just for us. The nice thing about this is that they will extend the Prime Rib special for us. If you would like their prime rib next meeting, let me know ahead of time so I can give Jimmie’s the heads up on how many prime ribs to have available. This will help in their preparation. Congratulations to Skip and Liz Sluder on their official appointment to the chapter staff position of Chapter Educators. Thank you Skip & Liz for stepping up to the plate. Liz, Loved the bunny song, parade, and eggs!!!

The Florida District Rally was really a good one this year. This was the first year that every ticket was sold for the Goldwing giveaway. Clearwater was this year’s winner for ticket sales having sold 3400. This was a great accomplishment for them. This means that next year’s raffle tickets will be blue, there Chapter color. Both Wesley Chapel and Fort Myers did a tremendous job as well.

The selling of the Rider Ed tickets for the Goldwing and cash prizes, enables all members in Florida to take advantage of free motorcycle and safety classes.

Note: There will be a Medic First Aid class held on April 23rd in the Palm Coast area. For more information, please contact Marcia Shad @ (386) 788-5232 or email [email protected].

There could be other classes held in our area, just keep watch on your calendars. We need you to contact Skip & Liz Sluder, Chapter Educators with what classes you might be interested in.

FL2-N Safety Corner

I’ve been talking the last few newsletters about the Rider Education Levels Program. Earlier, I talked about Level I, Safety by Commitment, and Level II, Safety by Education.

This month, we add Level III, Safety by Preparedness, or Certified Tour Rider. “It represents the commitment of the Rider and/or Co-Rider to be prepared in the event of an accident to give aid and possibly save lives.

This is done by being knowledgeable in First Aid or CPR and carrying a first aid kit on their motorcycle at all times.” Meaning, we take a First Aid course and CPR, these can be through any agency, but often, members participate in the Medic First Aid programs that cover both in a single session.

At our meeting in March, I mentioned “88 feet per second” and “1.5 seconds.” If we are travelling at 60 miles per hour, we are covering 88 feet per second. The typical reaction time is 1.5 seconds, meaning it takes that long (or longer for some of us) to recognize a problem and take evasive action to the problem. So, we want our spacing (the distance between vehicles) to give us enough room to react (that’s the 1.5 sections) to something happening in front us. Most riding courses suggest at least 4 seconds between us and the vehicle ahead, giving us time and space to react.

The times we have ridden with FL2-N have been enjoyable thanks to ride leaders and others being aware of the needs and limitations of others in the group. We all ride safely for fun and friendship.

Ride (and drive) Safe,

Skip & Liz, FL2-N Educators

We had a new location for the Florida District Rally this year. It was held at the Hilton Hotel at Altamonte Springs. There were 14 Chapters who donated COY baskets for the raffle. Proceeds from the raffle went directly to the new Florida District Couple of the Year. The money from the raffle helps alleviate some of the travel expenses for the couple throughout the year as they attend the various other District Rallies within Region A. They also are expected to attend Wing Ding 39 in Grapevine, Texas. The four couples that participated in the selection process were as follows:

Jan & Rick Meredith, FL1-L2 – Wesley Chapel

Ed & Dottie Bahrenburg, FL2-L – Lakeland

Nikki Blaha & Denis Turcotte , FL2-G – Fort Myers

Don & Cathy Scantlan, FL2L-A – West Palm Beach

And the new 2017 Couple of the Year for the Florida District is Jan & Rick Meredith, FL1-L2 from Wesley Chapel.

Time to thank all the “Worker Bees” who helped with the games on Friday from our chapter, Mo Dalton, Ro Molignaro, Jim & Elaine Beattie, Emily Berggen, Bill & Barb Sutton, Nolan Polley, and Pat & Paul Lytle.

Skip and Liz Sluder were also in attendance on Saturday with GWRRA friends from Bloomington, Indiana.

The rider Ed Motor Awareness and other prize drawing results were as follows:

1. Clearwater FL1-M - $500.00 gift card from Seminole Power Sports 2. Wesley Chapel, FL1-L2 - $250.00 gift card from Seminole Power Sports 3. South Carolina – 1 set of 1800 tires 4. Georgia Chapter S – 1 set of 1800 tires 5. Fort Lauderdale, FL2-R – Riding jacket 6. Wesley Chapel, FL1-L2 – Sharron Maltz a stay @ Hilton for the 2017 Florida Rally 7. Tennessee – Stay two nights at the Hamilton Inn in Arkansas

50-25-25 Drawings:

The most motorcycle raffle tickets were sold by Clearwater, FL1-M, which means the tickets next year will be blue.

There were three Grand Prize drawings:

1. 2017 1800 Goldwing which was won by a gentleman in Tennessee. Will Horsley won $200.00 for selling that ticket.

2. $1,000.00 cash was won by one of our own, Nolan Polley. Just in time for his trip “40 to Phoenix” on Wednesday, March 29th. No one signed that ticket, so they lost out on $200.00.

3. $500.00 cash was won by N. Bruski and Tim won $200.00 for selling the ticket.

There were lots of prizes given away at the District Rally. What a great rally, living up to our motto of having fun!!!!!!!
