Old

• HP farm closed down – to most users October 2000– To all February 2001

• NT Farm– LHCb production finished end of Feb 2001– Most machines moved to Linux then (10x450MHz

duals)– Core Farm remains so could be brought back into

use

Security

• Site Policy

• Firewall

• Only specified ports allowed in to certain machines

• No incoming access to the rest

– has reduced scanning

• Auditing critical services

CDF

• Funded by JIF (government programme)

• Still out to tender

• Large disk and SMP server(s)

– at RAL + 4 UK universities

– 5TB plus 2x8-way servers

• 16 node farm at RAL

• Use of Datastore (10-20TB)

• Similar to original BaBar bid

Linux Farm

• Was 120 cpus 40x450Mhz + 80x600MHz

• Added 20x450 from NT Farm in March

• Added 48x1GHz duals in APril

• 236 cpus >100GFLOPS peak

• 1GHz cpus show wide variation in benchmarks

DataStore

• Move existing IBM Magstar tapes into refurbished STK robot (30TB)

• 2 STK 9940 drives (60GB/tape, 10MB/s)

• 6TB of tapes today

• 175TB if robot full

• 330TB if IBM tapes replaced

• >1PB with bigger tapes next year

Network

• RAL now connected to ThamesValleyNet MAN @ 622Mbit– connected last week – Oxford, RAL, Reading– hence SuperJanet4 2.5Gbit UK national backbone

• RAL site backbone – a number of Nortel Gigabit switches– replacing FDDI (still in parallel)

Page 17: April 2001HEPix/HEPNT1 RAL Site Report John Gordon CLRC, UK

Network

• HEP services network – 2 Extreme Networks Summit 7i copper

Gigabit switches– testing Intel EEpro1000 copper NIC -

looks good• Experimenting with wireless ethernet

– outside firewall, PPTP to come inside

Grid Testbed

• 15 dual 1GHz planned

• 10-15 borrowed from Linux Farm for now

• 2x1.4TB IDE disk servers

• Gigabit switch

• Globus 1.1.3 and PBS

– unless WP6 decides otherwise.

Grid Access to Datastore

• We have implemented a Globus GASS server which will serve data from Datastore over Grid using GSI and globus i/o tools

– globus-rcp, globus-url-copy, Globus i/o library

• Plan to implement GridFTP server in same way
