Parker School held its 10th annual Kahiau dinner and auction gala for financial aid on March 7 at the Fairmont Orchid on the Kohala Coast. Over 280 people attended and helped the school raise over $235,000, a record for this event.

Nearly 50 percent of the 300 K-12 students at Parker receive financial assistance, and Kahiau, the school’s largest fundraiser of the year, is key to making this possible. The Hawaiian word

kahiau means “to give generously from the heart,” and every year the school puts on the gala so people can come to-gether in a fun way while helping provide children with a college-preparatory education at Parker.

Parker School wishes to thank the many sponsors, donors, volunteers and attendees who helped make the event a success.

Aloha, Parker School ‘Ohana!

Whether it’s lower schoolers working toward participating in their annual May Day program, middle schoolers chanting and harvesting kalo in the school garden, high schoolers singing in the spring musical, present-

ing a case in a debate tournament, or going on a hands-on science field trip, Parker School offers its students empow-ering opportunities. Our programs, dedicated teachers & staff and beautiful setting make Parker the special place it is.

Tuition alone covers just over 80% of the cost of educating our students. We rely on our Annual Fund to raise that ex-tra 20%. It is through the generosity of our extended ‘oha-na—parents, grandparents, alumni, faculty, staff, board members and friends—that we can close that gap and of-fer our students enriching field trips, a resource teacher to help in the lower school classrooms, and programs such as debate and drama. These are examples of the myriad of opportunities that the Annual Fund helps us to afford each year, and why your support is so crucial. No gift is too small!

More important than gift size is the percentage of active participation in the Annual Fund from each of our con-stituent groups. Participation is one of the key indicators of school support.

• Parent participation is critical

• Participation serves as a strong indicator of loyalty and satisfaction with Parker School

• Strong participation provides leverage when applying for additional school funding from foundations

The Annual Fund Committee, made up of current parents representing different grade levels, as well as an alumni representative and general ‘ohana representative, was es-tablished this fall. The committee was established with the purpose of increasing campaign participation via peer-to-peer connection. We are excited to say we have already seen an increase in participation!

Thank you, Annual Fund Committee volunteers. Way to go!

There is still time to make your gift to the Parker School Annual Fund before the June 30, 2015 deadline (plus you can help us increase our participation percentage). You may either mail to or drop off a donation at the Advance-ment Office, or make your donation online via our web-site, www.parkerschoolhawaii.org. As always, feel free to contact me if you have questions about giving opportuni-ties or our events.

Mahalo for your support!

Dr. Robert Fischell, famous physicist, inventor, and holder of more than 200 U.S. and foreign medical patents, came to visit Parker School on March 3, 2015.

Dr. Fischell’s inventions have led to the creation of several biotechnology companies. He gave specific examples for each of his inventions to the students and emphasized that much more persistence is needed to make a difference in these fields. He also explained to the students about the importance of setting oneself up for success, and the work ethic that went hand-in-hand with his own success.

Athletics News from Athletic Director Nicole Vedelli

Varsity Tennis Team – It has been a very rainy beginning for our varsity tennis team this year. They have prevailed, taking home many wins and gracefully accepting some losses. They are pro-gressing and developing with the guidance and skills from Coach Randy, Coach Chuck, Coach Buff and Coach Rami. I can’t thank these coaches enough for all of their dedication and support of the sport and to our athletes. Thank you Coaches!

Lower and Middle School Track & Field – This year our Lower and Middle School Track and Field Team have taken home too many medals to count. All of our discus throwers, high jumpers, runners, triple jumpers and softball throwers gave it their best and it showed with the amount of wins they brought home. It just goes to show that with hard work and determination you will suc-ceed in all endeavors! This could not have been possible without Parker School’s Track and Field Coach of four years - Coach Julia Simmons. Thank you Julia for another remarkable track and field season.

Middle School Tennis – This is the first year of our middle school tennis program and I have to say it has exceeded our expectations. Under the leadership of Coach Winderbaum, the developmental program has been a big hit with the students. His passion for ten-nis is contagious as our program has already doubled in size creat-ing the need for two tennis sessions for our students. This is excit-ing news for our soon to be varsity tennis athletes! Keep working hard! Thank you Coach Winderbaum!

Middle School Basketball – New this year as well is our middle school boy’s basketball team. We’ve had so much interest in this sport that we had to create two teams representing Parker School in the Parks and Recreation League. All of the boys have led the way to an incredible season of success. Team A came out ahead with an incredible 1-8 average. And team B has been instrumental in developing their skills and technique out on the courts. Con-gratulations Junior Basketball Bulls! I would like to thank the new

addition to our Parker ‘Ohana and thank a remarkable parent and coach. Coach Kevin Herendeen, for an outstanding basketball sea-son this year. All of our junior bulls worked hard and played hard because of Kevin’s inspiration, enthusiasm and knowledge of the game. He has created winners inside and out and I can’t wait to see our team develop and grow with his devotion and commitment to our athletes. Thank you Kevin and thank you boys for representing Parker and making us all so proud!

Middle School Paddling – I am simply thrilled to have Coach Kealoha teaching our young paddlers this year. She is an instru-mental part of our varsity paddling program and I feel very for-tunate to have her expertise in developing our middle school ath-letes. Paddling is such strong part of our culture here in Hawaii that I feel lucky to have this opportunity for our kids to experience it. This is a short introduction for these athletes to experience the waters and to see if they have a passion for it as they enter high school. GO BULLS and thank you Aunty Kealoha!

Lower School Basketball & Volleyball – New this year for our lower school athletes is a basketball and volleyball develop-ment program for our 4th and 5th graders. Coach Seneca Ropp who is Parker’s assistant varsity volleyball coach and who has coached middle school basketball before is very excited to begin these lessons. Your kids will have tons of fun with Coach Ropp’s drills and fun games to be had twice a week during the month

of April. For more information please email [email protected].

On February 15, all nine Parker students who compet-ed in the Sonny’s First Powerlifting Championships, a national competition in Hilo, qualified for the World Association of Benchers and Deadlifters (WABDL)World Competition in November 2015. Great work, Bulls!

Students participated in their annual Jump Rope for Heart Event on February 26. For several weeks prior, students joined forces to collect funds from family, friends and sponsors to raise a total of nearly $8,600, far surpassing their $5,000 goal!

On the day of the event, with Parker 11th graders on hand to help facilitate, the young students gathered under blue skies on the lower school’s field and moved through various jumping stations as their favorite music boomed in the background. The stations

had activities like solo jump roping, partner jumping, parachute fun, group jumping and team races.

The Jump Rope for Heart event raises money for the American Heart Association to help children with heart problems, and also teaches young participants how to keep their own hearts healthy through exercise and good nutrition. Parker School congratulates its students on working hard to raise so much for such a worthy cause.

PTSO News by PTSO President Jude McAnesby

PTSO has been engaged in a number of exciting activities this spring! We kicked off the season with a couple of newly sponsored clubs. The Tech Club has been engaging students in fun program-ming activities, while the Art Club has students uti-lizing recycled materials to express their dynamic and vibrant creativity. Many thanks go out to parents Caroline Landry and Geof-frey Mundon for their ener-gy and enthusiasm in these innovative ventures. We hope to expand activities like this next year. Please reach out to PTSO if you have any ideas of your own!

PTSO is also putting to-gether an internship re-source manual for upper school students interested in extending their learning, which will be accessible electronically. We hope to have it ready to go before the end of the school year. If anyone is aware of unique opportunities for our upper school students, please be in touch so that we can add them to our on-going offerings.

On March 12, a number of our ‘Ohana members gathered for the Parker Board’s second presentation of the school’s future plans. We discussed the next steps in assessing the feasibility of the multi-purpose building (which would include a combination gym, dance studio, and an indoor gathering space). We are also exploring the future expansion of the middle school. Parents, fac-ulty, and staff members shared their perspectives on these projects and brought their own original ideas to the table. It was a warm

and lively gathering, where we decided that Board meetings with community involvement should occur on a regular basis.

PTSO is again providing monetary grants to the school com-munity this spring. We extended mini-grants to our faculty and staff, of-fering $1,500 in grants of up to $500 each, and we provided a spring oppor-tunity of our new ‘Ohana grant for student-led initiatives. The ‘Ohana grant represents PTSO’s desire to further sup-port and connect with our student body more directly. Funds of $750 were offered for grants up to $250 each. We will have the list of recipients posted soon.

Other up-coming events include a Parker all-school family gathering, the lower school re-cyclables competition, volunteer and staff luncheons, and Paniolo Day preparations, which coincides with the conjunction of the 100th anniversary of Parker’s main hall. We invite you to come and join us in the fun and comradery!

There are many ways to follow our PTSO activities, progress, and updates: on Parker School’s Weekly Webflash, the PTSO page on the Parker School website, (www.parkerschoolhawaii.org), or on Facebook at www.facebook.com/ParkerSchoolPTSO.

As always, we welcome any questions, suggestions and comments at [email protected].
