With special thanks to

Spring is finally here, and with the blue sunny skies comes the return of the Gallery program at RUA RED! We’ve had a great start to the year, with packed out attendances at our films as well as wonderful comments and feedback from our visitors. This season sees the launch of The Modelled Conscious in Gallery 1, featuring an installation by artist Lucy Andrews (page 1).We are also very pleased to announce our first dedicated print exhibition, Stamp, in Gallery 2. The exhibition will feature work that reflects the innovative use of print within artistic practice, spanning a wide variety of printmaking techniques from Irish and international artists.

In May, we will host the ever expanding annual Glitch festival. This year the festival will be curated by Nora O’Murchú and you can expect cutting edge artwork that will challenge your perceptions of how art is made, as well as accompanying workshops and events.

The RUA RED program of family films, art trolley workshops and the over 55’s films continues for the season, with a technology theme running throughout April and May to coincide with Glitch. As well as the established programs we are introducing some new events, including a Photo Walk in May, workshops for National Drawing Day and a new program of participatory events for our wonderful Café which will be announced soon!

Finally, we are happy to announce the launch of our new supporter’s scheme. With your help, we will continue to provide a high level of visual arts programming as well as introducing new events in the future. There are some fantastic benefits included in the schemes so please turn to page 14 and let’s work together to make RUA RED even bigger and better!

Thank you for your continued support, and as always we welcome your feedback and comments in person, over the phone and online.

THE MODELLEDCONSCIOUSLUCY ANDREWS23 MAR - 11 MAYGALLERY 1PREVIEW 21 MAR6PM - 8PM

The Modelled Conscious is a new development by RUA RED to engage contemporary artists in response to a unified theme. Through the active engagement of artists in the creation of a new commission for the expansive space of Gallery 1, the artists chosen for The Modelled Conscious can express their own personal response to the idea of form and consciousness as well as the space itself.

This series is curated by RUA RED curator-in-residence Dr. Hilary Murray

Image: Lucy Andrews, Photograph by Philip White

The complex array of information that feeds into the perception-image has long been proposed as a method through which to investigate consciousness. In biological visual systems what we see is in fact a blend of percepts extrapolated from a far more complex object situated in the world. Thus art finds itself at the juncture of conscious awareness. This alignment of mind and matter; ‘ceases to be a suspension of the oppositions of form and matter, and becomes the product of a human mind which seeks to transform the surface of sensory appearances into a new sensorium that is the mirror of its own activity’ (Ranciere, 2002).

LUCY ANDREWSFor the first installment of The Modelled Conscious series, Lucy Andrews will present an exhibition of recent sculptural works adapted for gallery.Using large quantities of plastic packaging, the artist will make variously sized bodies of water. This interplay of the synthetic and the elemental leads to curious physical juxtapositions and trajectories. What results is not so much a collection of whole objects as dynamic pluralities of matter, held precariously in place by the forces around them. An uncertain materiality presents itself -at once primordial and futuristic - in which the physical properties and durations of things become ambiguous. Lucy Andrews was born in 1978, in Stoke-on-Trent, England, and now lives in Dublin. She graduated from NCAD with a BA in Fine Art and History of Art. Recent exhibitions include: Gracelands: Substance Abuse (2011), Transitive Relationships at Limerick City Gallery (2012), As Above So Below at 126, Galway (2012) A MacGuffin and Some Other Things, at Project Arts Centre (2012). Futures 12 at The Royal Hibernian Academy, Sam Keogh and Lucy Andrews at the Model, Sligo (2012) and Tentamen, North Great Georges St. Dublin (2012) She was the recipient of the inaugural Temple Bar Gallery and Studios Graduate Studio Award (2012-13).

Following the high standard of print work submitted to our annual open exhibition, Winter Open 2012, we have decided to dedicate a show to acknowledge the diverse work being created in print studios both Nationally and Internationally.

The exhibition, Stamp, aims to bring together artists who use print making as a means to explore the relationships between print and other art disciplines.

It is a celebration of the printmakers who explore and enrich other art practices and will reflect the innovative use of print within artistic prac-tice as a whole. The resulting exhibition spans a wide variety of print making techniques, as well as installation, sculptural work and artist books.

Glitch, our annual Digital Arts Festival returns.Run Computer, Run takes over both RUA RED galleries and showcases how creative technologies provide us with a critical lens to examine our everyday culture. From augmented reality, to video games, and interactive artworks, both our gallery and website will show how digital artists are taking on some of the key social, economic, political and cultural issues that challenge how the Internet is changing. This years’ Glitch features a gallery based show from Casey Reas, Marius Watz, FIELD and David Szauder that examines how The aesthetic and platforms of code has transformed from screen based interfaces to mobile platforms, print, 3d printing, and moving image.

Gallery 2 sees Evan Roth and Constant Dullaart form a collaborative exchange and create new artworks that examine the self-publishing platforms artists and technologists use to promote their artwork, and engage with their audience. Gallery visitors will interact with our AR-code installation using their smartphones and tablets in a show that examines the relationship between economics and immaterial labour.

In a group show featuring up to 50 net artists, gallery goers will interact with augmented reality markers and view the artwork on their phone. These artworks will also be available as limited edition t-shirts and digital prints from our website. Finally the RUA RED website will feature an interactive online exhibition that explores identity and anonymity within online culture and the importance of maintaining this aspect of Internet culture.

CHILDREN’S ARTSFESTIVAL

RUA RED tenants Alternative Entertainments will run their 8th annual AltEnts Children’s Arts Festival this year. Events will take place in RUA RED, South Dublin Libraries and schools and community centres. The festival caters for children aged from 2-12 years of age and introduces participants to all aspects of the arts.

Professional artists will engage with children from all around South County Dublin in a week of workshops and performances focusing on music, visual arts, dance, film making, creative writing and drama. The programme places participants in the special dual role of both performer and audience - a position that allows the children to explore their power to evaluate as well as create. It all promises to be a highly creative, fully interactive and a thoroughly enjoyable week for the children and their teachers too! Featured activities this year are rap workshops, a children’s film festival, dance workshops with Coisceim Dance Theatre and African drumming sessions. While most of the festival’s programme takes place in national schools and in partnership with the schools, a number of workshops and performances in the 2013 festival will be open to the public. Among these will be visual arts and music workshops for the very young (2-5 years-old).

For information contact Alternative Entertainments at 01-4520611, [email protected] or visit www.altents.ie.

The festival is organised by Alternative Entertainments Ltd. with support from The Arts Council of Ireland, South Dublin County Council and participating venues.

THROUGH THE LENSARTS AND HEALTH FILM FESTIVALThe National Centre for Arts and Health and RUA RED announce the return of Through the Lens, Ireland’s only Arts and Health Film Festival.

The festival began in 2011 and returns in 2013 for a special season of films aimed at medical professionals, students, service users, artists, filmmakers and the general public, interested in discussing and challenging perceptions of older age and how it is represented within film. Each event in the festival will include refreshments, a screening followed by a panel discussion and Q&A with medical professionals and service users from Tallaght Hospital.

This initiative builds on significant work at both the hospital and arts centre in terms of arts and health. The aim is to focus on the theme of older age as part of the Bealtaine festival (page 23) and to open debate about how the films portray older age from a variety of perspectives.

TENANT SPOTLIGHTInterviewed by Heather Byrne

ELIZABETH ARCHBOLD

HB: Who are you? / What are you all about?EA: I’m Elizabeth Archbold and I work in Studio 4 in RUA RED. I am a contemporary visual artist and I make small and medium scale oil on canvas paintings. I also work collaboratively; recent projects have been a project exploring the issues surrounding Graffiti and vandalism with teenagers and adults and an art project for local library users working with children.

HB: What are you working on right now?EA: At the moment I’m focused on making a series of new paintings for an upcoming exhibition next month. I am making the paintings by a process of additive and subtractive paint handling using images from the everyday “seen in passing” as starting points. Aswell as my prac-tice and projects I am currently researching a Masters in Fine Art at NCAD

HB: How did you get into this line of work?EA: I have always had a curiosity to explore the tactility of materials and the potential for their manipulation. I remember as a child taking apart my toys to see what was inside and then trying to fix them again. I happily went to art college after my Leaving Cert after which I starting working in my first studio space. This was in the ballroom of a derelict mansion that was stranded out of time in the North inner-city of Dublin. Since then I have had a studio practice exhibiting my work regularly.

27

HB: You’re heavily involved in the arts outside RUA RED (Elizabeth is part of South Dublin Artists Forum, teaching adults and currently completing a Masters in NCAD). Do you find this challenging trying to balance your own studio practice?EA: Yes, I find it challenging to find a balance that is compatible with my practice. But I also find it energising working with other artists and people involved in art making that are enthusiastic about creative engagement. My studio practice eats up time as well though there are few boundaries when it comes to getting work done. A big time consumer but essential part of every arts practice is working on applications.

HB: Any upcoming projects you want to plug? EA: The exhibition I am currently working towards is “Conditional” a three painters exhibition with artists Lorraine Walsh and Cóilín Rush at No Grants Gallery, Temple Bar. Details can be found at www.conditionalpaintingshow.wordpress.com. South Dublin Artists Forum will be taking part in events at RUA RED for National Drawing Day on Saturday 18th May. (page 11)

HB: Where can people find out more about you?EA: My new website will be www.elizabetharchbold.wordpress.com or www.ruared.ie/Elizabeth_Archbold.html

HB: What is a normal day in your studio like?EA: The way I work in my studio changes all the time. Part of my work is experimenting with new approaches to working. Generally the line up of my day largely depends on what stage I am at in realising a series of paintings. At the beginning I spend more time in the day making drawings and on research reading. As I get further into the work a normal day in the studio involves longer hours putting on (and scrapping off) paint and preparing canvases. I make notes while I work all the time and sketches of ideas or concerns that I want to explore further. At the moment I am spending less time looking and researching reading while in the studio and more time mixing colors and putting paint on canvas.
