Faced with theseprospects, Lane opts to end it a1l... until he comes up rvith a

Hollandlivens the high jinks with surrealistic fantasy touches, including JelJ-Othat crawls, a hamburger that sings Van Halen, drawings that mockits creator, Japanese race-car ddvers who only speak Howard Cosell, and a psychotic paperboy seeking blood over a missing $2. (1992, d. R6ny Belvaux, tj6; $4.50 student senior) Is it a comedy? Adorumentary? An underground goreJest? Mnn Bites Dog, the first featureftlm from Belgian director R6my Belvaux, is all of these md much more, a

ghastly', shocking and explosive debut lvith a1l the genuinely ruthlessability to disturb as an oily blue-barreled revolver jammed in your mouth. And it's fumy, too. Taking on the increasingly omnipresent trend ofreality-based television shorvs such as COPS, Rescue 911 and others, MalBifes Dog follows ihe self-reflexive exploits of a docunentary Iilm crew as

they attempt to shoot a sort of "dav in the life" piece on a Brussels serialkiller, Ben (Poelvoorde). A far cry from Michael Rooker's take on a similarsociopath in Henry: Poriait of n Sertnl Kilkr, this easygoing maniac has theuptorvn charm of that worldly Republican tiaternitv Joe: he's handy witha wine list, is an erudite conversationalist, and tcnds to recite really au'fulpoetry u'hen he's in his cups. He's also a bit of a racist and the inventor ofa mixed drink charmingly knolvn as the "Dead Baby Boy." (the Alamoversion will not be spirit-based). As the {iln crew acquaint themselveswith the daily rituals o{ this monsier ("1 like to start off each monlh with a

Eventually - andunsurprisingly -- they become more than rvitnesses and actuallycommence to aid Ben in his increasingly repugnant crimes. For all its TLis

Is Spinal Tap in-jokes, Belvaux's film can be a dif{icult thing to n'atch (one

scene in parlicular has managed to send record numbers oi vierrers

scurrying from the theatre in revulsion, and although the Austin print ofthe tilm is medited, the national djstributor has removed the olfendingbit from most versions). Shot in black-and-lvhite, Marr Brfrs Dog has thefeel of a genuine documenta$i which makes it all the more grisly The

questions raised - Where is the line behveen reaiity and fiction? Howmuch is too much? and, of course, That s Entertainment? - are dodgyenough in themselves but the film never resorts to preaching - it doesn'thave to. Shocking, audacious, compelling, and more than a littlehunorous, Man Bttts Dog is a stunning original: love it or hate it, you'llnever Iorgei it. SCHMETVISTHE SEARCH FOR THE KING'S JEWISH ROOIS

TUES & WED, JUNE 17 & 18,7:00 & 9:45(2002, d. Max Wallace, 80min, $6; $4.50 shrdent/senior/AFS) Nobodvknew Elvis was Jewish until the influential Wall Streei JournJlpublished an article h 1998, 'Ail Shook Up in the Holy Land' exposingthe King's improbable lineage. Elvis was very aware of his Jewish roots, according to Gracelmd spokesman Todd Morgan who told the Journal,'lt was something Elvis was aware of and certainly was sensitive to.'Schmeluis is the story of a true life Montreal-based Jewish Elvisimpersonator named Dan Hartal. For years, Hartal has worked as anentertainer at Jewish senior citizens' homes in his incarnation as

Schmelvis - singing his own versions of Elvis songs in a Jewish musicalstyle. Schmehls follows Hartal on a bizarre odyssey to Elvis's Gracelandhome in Memphis to say Kaddish - the Jewish prayer {or the dead atElvis's grave. Stopping at roadside diners in his Winnebago downHighway 61, Schmelvis mingles with rednecks, truckers, white trashand middle Americans. Bizarre and unpredictable reactions result as hetries to convince his fellow travelers that Elvis was a Jew. Schmelais

sheds fascinating light onto contemporary idol worship and the seriousquest of an Orthodox Jew in an Elvis costume.

SEE THE ORIGINAT BOTTTE ROCKET SHORT BEFORE THE FI[i/I!THURS-SAL JUNE 19-21 , MIDNIGHL SUN, JUNE 22 4:30

There is a great divide about this film: A limp2 stars from Ebert,Mick LaSalle from the San Francisco Chronicle (whom I generallyrespect) gives it one star and calls it wretched. Did these people seethe same film I did? Of all the movies I have seen in the last 10years (and that is a LOT of movies), no other film has made melaugh so convuisively that I had to forus all power not to wet mypants. Everything that is wonderful about Wes Anderson and theWilson brothers, every subtlety, every comic sensibility, everynonsensical character quirk is at peak form in Botfle Rockef. Thiiisn't a matter of "taste," not a matter of "evervone has their ownopinion." Bottle Rocket is flat out hysterical.' It is a universal, mdeniable truth, and those who disagree are simply wong. As anextra bonus before Bolfle Roc,tef, check out the ultra-rare short fiLm(also called Botfle Rocket), thaf when seen by producer AlbertBrooks, inspired him to sign a check then and there for 95 millionso these boys could get started with their careers.

An ofloverlooked aspect of hip-hop music gets its due in Brealh

Confral: The History of lhe Humail Beafbor. Beatboxing is the art ofproducing musical sounds, particularly percussiorl without the use ofinstruments. Filmmaker Joey Gar{ie}d traces beatboxing from the early

days, when the simple rhythms o{ Darren "Buff" Robinson helped make

The Fat Boys a household name, to the amazing techdcal skills of such

contemporily artists as Rahzel and Scratch ol The Roots, and AnthonyRiver4 also krown as Click tha Supah Latin. As one artist, Chris Jung, explains, beatboxing "stemmed {ron the need to make music now." Itgrew out of a necessity to produce music when instruments andturntables were not available. Doug E. explain what they brought to the art, while Congo-born vocalist MarieDaulne o{ Zap Mama expomds on both the miversality and the ethnicdiversity of vocal rhythm-making. Breath Control won the FestivalChoice Award at the 2002 New York Underground Film Festival. It was
