The Sherman Board of Education seeks an outstanding educational lead-er for the position of Superintendent of Schools and Principal of the Sherman School. Qualified and interested candidates are invited to apply. Cooperative Educational Services Executive Search Services will facilitate the search on behalf of the Board of Education. The Search Committee expects the new superintendent to assume responsibilty of the office as soon as possible but no later than July 1, 2016.

Qualified candidates, at minimum, are expected to meet the following general performance standards for the superintendent and principal and must:

Sherman is a scenic and rustic small town at the northernmost border of Fairfield County. Connecticut Magazine has three times lauded the community as the Best Small Town in the state. Located on the border with upstate New York, Sherman offers commuters an easy ride to the cities throughout the TriState region while maintaining a serene character that residents deeply enjoy. The Appalachian Trail winds its way through the town’s northern end, allowing hikers an opportunity to trek along the country’s most famous trail. Sherman also borders Candlewood Lake, the largest lake in Connecticut.

The town has a small population of about 3,500 people. Named for Roger Sher-man, one of the Connecticut signers of the Declaration of Independence, the town boasts a gorgeous Historic District that has earned designation on the Na-tional Register of Historic Places. A proud cultural legacy exists to this day, with past and present residents including the likes of Disney CEO Bob Iger, famed ballet dancer Mikhail Baryshnikov, and rock star Darryl Hall of Hall and Oates.

• Understand and model appropriate value systems, ethics, and moral leadership, and coordinate with social and human services, as appropriate, to help students grow and develop.

• Demonstrate leadership through empowering and inspiring others within the organization by visioning and shaping a positive and productive school and district culture.

• Be committed to collaboratively building the capacity of the entire pre-K - 8 system.

• Be able to build mutually respectful relationships by working effectively with the Board to formulate district policy, define mutual expectations of personnel performance and demonstrate effective governance to all staff, students, and the community at large.

• Be able to establish and sustain effective communications with the Board, students, staff, parents, and the community as a whole, including fostering relationships with the media and responding to community feedback.

• Be able to gather and analyze data for decision-making and performance evaluation, and to provide recommendations to the Board for effective and efficient allocation of district resources.

• Remain current with advances in curriculum, teaching, learning and assessment theories and “best practices” including the integration of technology in an educational setting. Demonstrate knowledge of CCSS, SBAC, and other key district initiatives.

• Possess knowledge about and ability to promote effective teaching practices throughout the district and to facilitate use of instructional resources to maximize student achievement for all students.

• Demonstrate skill in developing and implementing up-to-date staff performance evaluation systems and applying ethical, contractual and legal requirements for personnel selection, development, retention, promotion, and dismissal.

• Possess strong financial and managerial background.

• Think effectively under pressure and be able to win the trust and confidence of others through demonstrated competence and character.

The Sherman SchoolThe Sherman Board of Education runs one public school, the Sherman School, which serves children from preschool through the 8th grade. The school has a rep-utation for excellence and is dedicated to creating an educational environment that supports students to be confident in their learning abilities and become responsible and caring citizens. The Sherman School has a student enrollment of 336 students. Once Sherman students reach high school, the town funds tuition to send students to schools in several nearby towns, including New Milford High, New Fairfield High, Shepaug Valley Regional in Washington, Nonnewaug High in Woodbury, and Abbott Tech in Danbury.
