2 Safety notesPreliminary information
Manual – Application Modules for SNI I/O Systems8
2 Safety notes2.1 Preliminary information
The following general safety notes have the purpose to avoid injury and damage toproperty. They primarily apply to the use of products described in this documentation. If you use additional components also observe the relevant warning and safety notes.
2.2 UseMake sure that the basic safety notes are read and observed. Make sure that personsresponsible for the machinery and its operation as well as persons who work on thedevice independently have read through the documentation carefully and understoodit. If you are unclear about any of the information in this documentation, or if you re-quire further information, contact SEW‑EURODRIVE.The following safety notes refer to the use of the software. This document does not replace the detailed documentation for the connecteddevices. This documentation assumes that the user has access to and is familiar withthe documentation for all connected products.Do not perform installation or startup if the product is damaged.Removing required covers without authorization, improper use or incorrect installationand operation may result in severe injury to persons, or damage to machinery. All work in the areas of transportation, storage, operation and waste disposal must becarried out by persons who are trained appropriately.
2.3 Target groupSoftware specialist Any work with the software may only be performed by adequately qualified personnel.
Qualified personnel in this context are persons who have the following qualifications:• Appropriate instruction• Knowledge of this documentation and other applicable documentation• SEW‑EURODRIVE recommends additional product training for products that are
operated using this software. The above mentioned persons must have the authorization expressly issued by thecompany to operate, program, configure, label and ground devices, systems and cir-cuits in accordance with the standards of safety technology.
2.4 Designated useThe following application modules are realized with the SNI I/O system:• The I/O application module with the respective fieldbus interface makes the signals
of the SNI I/O system available to the higher-level controller.• The I/O logic application module is used for the decentralized logical link of input
signals to control a digital output signal.• The I/O positioning application module is an extension of the I/O logic application
module. It is used for controlling the positioning procedure of an independent mo-tion. 22

Manual – Application Modules for SNI I/O Systems 9
Use the device-independent "Application Configurator" configuration software to startup and configure the axes for the application module and to download the completeconfiguration to the controller.
2.5 Bus systemsA bus system makes it possible to adapt electronic drive components to the particularsof the machinery within wide limits. There is a risk that a change of parameters thatcannot be detected externally may result in unexpected (but not uncontrolled) systembehavior and may have a negative impact on operational safety, system availability, ordata security.Especially in Ethernet-based networked systems and with engineering interfaces, make sure that unauthorized access is prevented.Use IT-specific safety standards to increase access protection to the ports. For a portoverview, refer to the respective technical data of the used device.

3 Project planning informationRequirements
Manual – Application Modules for SNI I/O Systems10
3 Project planning information3.1 Requirements
Correct configuration and proper installation of the units are required for successfullystarting up and operating the application modules with the Application Configurator. You find detailed configuration information in the documentation of the respective units(see chapter "Other applicable documentation").
3.2 PC and softwareThe application module is part of the "Application Configurator" configuration software. For this reason, the system requirements of the Application Configurator apply. Theyare listed in the documentation for the "Application Configurator for CCU" configura-tion software.
3.3 Approved unit combinationsThe following table lists the permitted combinations of controller types and lower-levelunits.

Manual – Application Modules for SNI I/O Systems 11
4 System description4.1 Area of application
I/O application moduleThe I/O application module with the respective fieldbus interface makes the signals ofthe SNI I/O system available to the higher-level controller.
I/O logic application moduleThe I/O logic application module is used for the decentralized logical link of input sig-nals to control a digital output signal. This allows for an independence of the busruntime of the SNI bus. Digital input signals can be linked logically. Analog signals andcounter values are linked with comparison operations. If the input signals are assignedto one direction of movement, a direction-dependent control of the output signal ispossible by transfer of the direction of movement. Each link is controlled as independ-ent function.
I/O positioning application moduleThe I/O positioning application module is an extension of the I/O logic applicationmodule. It is used for controlling the positioning procedure of an independent motion. One application example is the enable control of an EMS rail element. The application modules are equipped with a consistent process data interface that issimply extended with increasing functionality. Thus the profiles of the applicationmodule are downward compatible.
4.2 Scope of functions of the process data profiles
I/O application moduleThe I/O application module has the following profiles.
Profile Scope of functions2 PD 2 process data words for controlling the SNI I/O system and the image of
the digital inputs and outputs.
6 PD 6 process data words for controlling the SNI I/O system and in addition tothe 2 PD profile for 4 counter values.
10 PD 10 process data words for controlling the SNI I/O system and in addition tothe 6 PD profile for 4 analog values.
I/O logic application moduleThe I/O logic application module has the following profiles.
Profile Scope of functions10 PD 10 process data words for controlling the SNI I/O system and for controlling
the logic functions.
