Our instructors are all native speakers and qualified teachers of Italian. Our dedicated teachers will assist you in the learning process, creating a relaxed and pleasant atmosphere in the classroom. Small classes: 6 to 13 students. Courses are divided into eight progressive levels and are offered once or twice a week, during daytime or evening. Private lessons for individuals are designed especially for those who have limited time to learn or perfect the language. The course can be oriented toward the student’s particular field of interest. Our courses follow the Common European Framework set by the European Council. Tuition & Registration FeesThe tuition fee is $300 for 25 hours of instruction plus textbooks. All students will receive a free annual IIC membership. Membership gives free access to the Istituto’s library and videotape collection, free admission to selected Italian film screenings and cultural events. Free WI-FI also available on premises. Fees are payable by cheque or debit only. Cheques should be made out to the Istituto Italiano di Cultura. Cheques will be put on hold until the start date of the course. Fees do not include textbooks.

Cancellation & RefundsThe Istituto reserves the right to cancel any course should the number of students registered for that course be insufficient. In this case, cheques on hold will be returned. No refund is granted after course commencement. However, if a student is not able to attend a course and notifies us within 7 days from the date of commencement fees can be accredited to a subsequent term.

TextbooksTextbooks and optional course material can be purchased directly at the Istituto Italiano di Cultura.

Placement Test & Examination PolicyA placement test can be provided before registration to determine proficiency. Students may opt to sit for an examination to qualify for a certificate of proficiency.

Beginner I This course is an introduction to the basic elements of the language. Emphasis is placed on oral communication, pronunciation and vocabulary acquisition. Students will study the present tense of regular and of most common irregular verbs; definite and indefinite articles; subject pronouns; simple prepositions.

Beginner II As in Beginner I, emphasis is placed on basic communicative strategies as well as fundamental grammar & vocabulary. Topics include: present perfect and future tenses; compound prepositions.

Intermediate I This course enriches the students’ knowledge of current expressions and vocabulary and introduces the following grammatical structures: possessive adjectives; imperfect & pluperfect tenses; direct object pronouns.

Intermediate IIStudents will have the opportunity to enhance their basic communication skills while learning additional vocabulary and more complex grammatical structures such as: reflexive verbs; indirect object pronouns; imperative; present and past conditional.

Intermediate Plus This course explores more advanced structures of Italian grammar such as: combined and relative pronouns and comparative adjectives.

Advanced I & IIIn Advanced I & II you will study the subjunctive and the gerund. Special emphasis is placed on hypothetical phrases and agreement of the tenses as well as idiomatic forms.

Italian Grammar & StylisticsThis course is ideal for students who wish to gain a better understanding of syntax and stylistics.

Italian Cinema & ConversationThis course is designed for advanced students who are interested in Italian cinema and would like to engage in discussions on the art of cinema in Italy. A total of five films will be viewed on a large screen. Viewings will be followed by discussions. Students will be expected to write a short review of the film in Italian. The reviews will be read in class the week after the viewing. Aspects of written and oral language will be discussed during the reviews.

Conversation I & IIThrough simple literary readings and analysis of newspaper and magazine articles, the instructor will guide conversation and discussions on current events. Students will have the opportunity to put in practice the grammatical structures learned in the Beginner & Intermediate courses and acquire additional relevant vocabulary.

Review I & IIThese courses are designed for those who need a general review of the grammatical structures learned in Beginner I & II (Review I) and Intermediate I & II (Review II) before advancing to the next level.

Italian for BusinessDesigned for those who are professionally involved in the business and international trade, the course focuses on both oral and written expressions and provides students with specific related vocabulary.

Italian for TravellersPlanning a trip to Italy in the near future? This course gives you the opportunity to learn the most basic and useful words and expressions in Italian as well as cultural information that every traveller to il Bel Paese should know! Offered weekly or bi-weekly.

Read an Italian NovelDesigned for advanced students of Italian who are interested in reading an Italian novel, and would like to engage in discussions on aspects of Italian culture. This course also includes grammar review.

Italian for Children and Teenagers*The program, specifically designed for children and teenagers, aims at developing language proficiency in a fun and dynamic learning environment. They will enjoy a variety of activities directed at strengthening their communication skills in Italian through listening, speaking, reading and writing.

Reading and Comprehension*This course refine students comprehension skills by reading, discussing and analyzing a variety of literary texts. Students become more confident and effective communicators by learning and using the most common idiomatic expressions and metaphorical language. The course is designed for advanced students.
