On-the job training at 98.9FM radio station

You will be required to complete 375 hours of (paid) on-the-job training at 98.9FM radio station under the supervision of a workplace supervisor who is a qualified broadcaster. The employment arrangement will comprise a recognised Traineeship with your employer, Brisbane Indigenous Media Association Ltd (BIMA). You will be employed by BIMA to work in the radio station and you will be paid for your work in accordance with the terms of your employment contract.

Triple A Training will provide a mentor handbook to help guide your on-the-job training at 98.9FM. You will be expected to actively participate in the workplace mentoring program with workplace mentors (98.9FM staff), and keep a record of mentoring activities in your mentor handbook.

All on-the-job training must be recorded and co-signed by the workplace supervisor in the your official training record. Prior to signing your official training record, your workplace supervisor will want to review your mentor handbook and your recent work. Sometimes your workplace supervisor may ask you to do some more tasks before signing the training record. Note that by law, you will be required to present your training record to Triple A Training at least every 12 weeks.

Note about ‘Construction Industry White Card’: the sets and staging for some performances may fall within the definition of construction work. People entering a construction site are required to complete the unit CPCCOHS1001A - Work safely in the construction industry (commonly known as a ‘White Card’) prior to entering the site. Triple A Training and 98.9FM will ensure that you do not attend construction sites during your training, so a White Card will not be necessary. However if you were to transfer to another employer and/or training organisation, then that employer/training organisation may require you to obtain a White Card due to their own operational requirements.

Details of assessments to be completed

Observation demonstrations

These assessments are designed to assess practical skills and will involve your assessor directly observing you carrying out tasks (e.g. planning and preparing a radio program). You will have multiple attempts at assessment and your assessor will give you feedback.

These assessments will predominantly be carried out during block training.

Workplace project assessments

These assessments are designed to assess practical skills and will involve you completing projects (e.g. compiling an audio package for broadcast on 98.9FM). A written workplace supervisor verification will be required for each workplace project, to confirm that the tasks were undertaken in accordance with workplace procedures and were in fact completed by you. You will have multiple attempts at assessment and your assessor will give you feedback.

You will be required to take these assessments back to complete in the workplace (at 98.9FM) and then submit to Triple A Training by the due date.

Knowledge questions and case studies

These assessments are designed to assess knowledge and practical skills. The knowledge questions will consist of questions for you to answer, based on the learning materials you have been provided in the course. The case studies will involve you demonstrating skills based on information in a particular case study you have been provided. You will have multiple attempts at assessment and your assessor will give you feedback.

You will be required to complete these assessments at home and then submit to Triple A Training by the due date. You can choose to work on these assessments during your ‘study hall’ sessions at block training, however you will need to allocate time at home as well. Please note that you are expected to work on these assessments at home and/or during study hall. You will not be provided time to work on these assessments during your paid employment at 98.9FM.

Questions

Task 1 - Reading

Read the information below and answer the questions following

The PASS method of using a fire extinguisher

Pull the pin at the top of the extinguisher. Releasing the pin allows you to discharge the extinguisher.

Aim at the base of the fire, not the flames. This is important – to put the fire out, you need to extinguish the fuel.

Squeeze the lever slowly. This will release the extinguishing agent. If the handle is released, the discharge will stop.

Sweep from side to side. Using a sweeping motion, move the fire extinguisher back and forward until the fire is completely out. Operate the extinguisher from a safe distance, and then move towards the fire once it starts to diminish. Make sure you read the instructions on your fire extinguisher – different fire extinguishers recommend operating them from different distances.

Seedless lychee trees bearing fruit after decades of hard work By Melanie Groves

One $US5,000 tree from China, 19 years and counting, and a lot of hard work is what Tibby Dixon has put into having the first seedless lychees growing in Australia.

The North Queensland farmer has left the traditional path of growing trees solely for fruit, and develops lychee varieties, selling young plants to other farmers to grow.

But the pick of the crop might just be a seedless variety he has been propagating from a single tree imported from China.

"The cultivar [variety] itself is a medium-sized fruit, [with] no seed, [and] very flavoursome," Mr Dixon said.

"To me, it actually tastes like it has a bit of pineapple in it — that's what my tastebuds tell me.

"It's very different to all the other cultivars we have."

Mr Dixon, who is based at Sarina Beach near Mackay, has harvested only a few kilograms of the seedless fruit from the trees this year, and has preferred to focus on growing the trees to establish more plants.

How do you make lychees seedless?

Developing a new variety takes a lot of time and skill.

Mr Dixon has developed multiple lychee varieties, and the process involves both selective breeding and cross-pollinating flowers by hand over several generations of trees.

"First of all you have to start off with a really good cultivar, and then you get on with it and you keep cross-pollinating it," he said.

"[Then] hopefully somewhere down the line you can actually get something with a small seed, and from there you cross-pollinate again.

"By chance you might end up with a seedless lychee.".

Cross-pollination is done by collecting pollen from the male part of a lychee flower, which is then transferred by hand to the female part of the flower on a different variety.

The job is finicky, and the pollen is sometimes stored until the flowers are considered more receptive.

When will seedless lychees hit the supermarket shelf?

The variety is still in the early stages of development and is yet to be planted on a commercial scale.

Mr Dixon is in the process of growing a crop of trees which will one day bear fruit on Australian farms.

"Within a couple of years we should have enough to sell out in commercial numbers," he said.

Mr Dixon's trial varieties are grown until a fruit-bearing age, and then the crop is trialled to ensure consistent productivity.

"It's been a long, hard slog," he said.

"You have to ensure that the material you're going to sell is highly productive."
