Bill Cosby Emphasizes the Importanceof Education with Local StudentsIn March, star of the Emmy® and Golden Globe®-winning television program The Cosby Show, Bill Cosby spent nearly 45 minutes with students from Academy Prep of Tampa between his two performances at the Hall. Cosby discussed the importance of education and taking responsibility for your actions during his visit with the students. Charlie Rutz, long-time supporter, Board member and Chairman of the Membership Committee helped arrange the meeting between Mr. Cosby and the students. Charlie shared, “I firmly believe that Bill Cosby with the help of the staff at Ruth Eckerd Hall made an enormous impact on the lives of the students. They left wide-eyed and connected to the fact that they have a way to the road of success through education. I am very proud that I am associated with an organization that is not just making a difference through The Marcia P. Hoffman Performing Arts Institute but also by arranging meetings like this one.”

Capitol Theatre UpdateIn December 2008, the City of Clearwater and Ruth Eckerd Hall joined forces to renovate and revitalize The Capitol Theatre in Downtown Clearwater in the Cleveland Street District. Interim renovations were made and over a 15 month period the performances presented by Ruth Eckerd Hall at The Capitol Theatre have been so well received that 15 of the last 16 shows sold out. According to Frank Hibbard, Clearwater Mayor, “With Ruth Eckerd Hall as our partner, we know that we will have a successful theater in downtown Clearwater, which is vital to the development of this important area of our city.”

Performances will continue until major renovations to The Capitol Theatre begin. During the renovations, the theater will be restored to its historical character, modern-day amenities added and the capacity increased from 450 to 600 seats.

The Capitol Theatre and the Lokey building next door, which will be adapted for re-use as part of this project and house restrooms, offices, lobby spaces and more, were the first buildings that the City of Clearwater designated as historic properties. Recently, the Clearwater Downtown Partnership, recognizing the importance of the theater, has named one of the organization’s annual awards—most improved property—after The Capitol Theatre.

Robert Freedman, President and CEO of Ruth Eckerd Hall stated, “We are complete with the schematic design phase of the renovation and still planning to do many shows at the theater up to the time it will close for the renovation.” Some patrons were

concerned about parking downtown and this has not been an issue at all especially with the addition of valet parking right at the front door of The Capitol Theatre.

The value of The Capitol Theatre to the City of Clearwater is significant. The value includes serving as a downtown landmark, having an annual economic impact of over $3 million and attracting and sustaining downtown restaurants, bookstores and high-end retailers by drawing regular daytime and evening audiences. Numerous restaurants have reported increased business when the Capitol Theatre is in use.

Mayor Hibbard stated, “I look forward to continuing to partner with Ruth Eckerd Hall and seeing the renovations finalized for the Capitol Theatre. Ruth Eckerd Hall is a landmark not only in Clearwater but across the country. We are lucky to have Ruth Eckerd Hall as part of our community.”

Founding Members Share How the Arts are Engraved In Their Lives Through Sickness and HealthIn July 2009 when long-time member and supporter, Jim Agnew learned that Bill Cosby was returning to Ruth Eckerd Hall he had a special request. Upon Bill Cosby’s return in March 2010, it would mark an anniversary for his wife Gail, who would be cancer-free for three years. Jim and Gail are big fans of Bill Cosby and had purchased front row seats in 2007 when Gail was going through chemotherapy. Jim had purchased tickets for the 2010 performance and wanted to commemorate Gail’s anniversary with an autographed sweat shirt from Bill Cosby. Being a cancer survivor himself, Jim knows how the arts can positively impact your recovery. The request to Bill Cosby was answered with a yes and Gail received a signed sweat shirt. According to Jim, “I’m sure that attending Bill Cosby’s 2007 performance helped contribute to Gail’s recovery, since a positive attitude is important to your health.” Jim and Gail further demonstrated their support of the arts and their gratitude to Bill Cosby by making a donation in memory of his son, Ennis, who was shot to death while changing a tire in Los Angeles in 1997.

Gail and Jim Agnew know the importance that the arts can play in regaining your health.

the CMAs for 15 years and had placed attending on her “bucket list” of things to accomplish before she “kicked the bucket!” Sharon successfully bid on the CMA trip and shared her thoughts, “Attending the CMAs was wonderful but the experience of a lifetime was sitting with the WQYK deejays for three days as they interviewed some of country music’s biggest stars – Tim McGraw, Keith Urban, Darius Rucker and Lady Antebellum – it was absolutely awesome!” If you are interested in donating an item to an upcoming auction to help a fellow arts patron cross an item off their “bucket list,” please contact Nancy Dietrich at (727) 712-2760 or [email protected].

Building New Audiences for the Arts Through Arts EducationAccording to popular wisdom, if you build it – or in the case of the arts, perform it – they will come. Or will they? Recent research, including the National Endowment for the Art’s 2008 Survey of Public Participation in the Arts, makes it clear that, overall, arts participation in the U.S. appears to be waning. While there are no straight line reasons for this erosion – certainly the down economy has played a factor – one contributing factor to disappearing audiences may be a declining focus on cultural literacy as a component of arts education in the U.S. While many ongoing arts education experiences are aimed at instilling student proficiency and skill in an art form, cultural literacy speaks to a deeper engagement with the art form that allows the student to see and make connections within a particular discipline, between arts disciplines, and between the arts and other subject areas such as the sciences and humanities. In other words, cultural literacy is concerned with the idea that art does not, in fact, exist in a vacuum but is a vital and vibrant part of our everyday lives.

Cultural literacy can be defined as having the skills and a framework to listen, participate, respond to and engage with cultural events and experiences that are all around us every day. So understanding how people interact with each other, how they express themselves, how they express themselves through various forms of art and how others respond to those expressions are all elements that create American culture and create the culture in which we live. Fostering cultural literacy in students helps them understand the wider world of what goes into making an artwork – not just materials and a skill set but a particular time in history or economic climate or prevailing set of social mores – enabling them to personally engage with and respond to the artwork in a way that resonates with their own values, history and daily life.

The Marcia P. Hoffman Performing Arts Institute at Ruth Eckerd Hall has arts education programming that impacts nearly 100,000 children and adults annually. These arts education programs help facilitate cultural literacy in our schools and throughout the community. The programs include Eckerd Theater Company, Artists on the Road, The Bank of America SchoolTime Series, the Family Theater Series, Evening at the Murray, PASSport, Arts in Medicine, exploratory and prepatory classes, private lessons, summer arts camps, master classes and lectures.

Clearly an engaged population, one that understands how the arts connects to everyday life, is a population that will show up to be an audience. As documented in the NEA’s report The Arts and Civic Engagement, arts participation seemingly leads to other types of engaged participation – in volunteering, in sports and in the civic life of the community. Donors “Get on the Bus” to Support Arts EducationEach May the Pinellas County schools that participate in The Marcia P. Hoffman Performing Arts Institute’s PASSport program hold a Curriculum Night to spotlight what their students have achieved throughout the year. PASSport is a school-based educational model founded on the premise that all children benefit from a learning environment that includes effective instruction which embodies the creative process and the nurturing of the imagination. Skycrest and Lealman Elementary Schools and St. Paul’s School participate in the PASSport program. Over 40 Ruth Eckerd Hall donors rode a school bus to the Skycrest Curriculum Night to experience first-hand the accomplishments of the students. “Through the PASSport program, we have witnessed the joy, wonder and awe on the children’s faces during the performances, which have inspired, taught and exposed the students to a vital part of our culture . . . . the arts,” said members of the 4th Grade Team at Skycrest.

Teen Choir Attends Prestigious Disney Event for Third YearThe Marcia P. Hoffman Performing Arts Institute Teen Choir represented Ruth Eckerd Hall when they performed last December at Walt Disney World’s 2009 Candlelight Processional and Massed Choir Program in Orlando. After going through a rigorous application and audition process, the Teen Choir was invited to perform at this prestigious event joining high school, art school, church and community choirs from around the country. This annual Disney event is in its 38th year and featured a 50-piece orchestra and readings of the Story of Christmas by different celebrity narrators.

For the third year, this trip increased the awareness about Ruth Eckerd Hall’s Hoffman Institute and its arts education programs. This trip was made possible due to the generosity of our donors including our community partner, the Clearwater Chorus, which made a donation to assist with transportation.

Thanks to Donor Generosity Scholarships Awarded to Four Outstanding StudentsThanks to the generosity of our donors, each year four talented high school students are selected as first place recipients of the Ruth Eckerd Hall Youth Scholarships in the Performing Arts. In 2010, each student was awarded $2,500 to continue their studies of the performing arts. Following is an overview of their accomplishments and how your donations help further the arts and student excellence.

Hannah Zazzaro – recipient of the Vocal Scholarship, is a junior at Countryside High School. Hannah has won several vocal and talent competitions including the University of Kentucky’s Schmidt Vocal Competition, Applebee’s Neighborhood Idol and Pollo Tropical’s “Got Talent.” She is also involved in various choral groups, including the Ruth Eckerd Hall Teen Choir and Troupe, Countryside High School Chorus and Pinellas All County Chorus. Hannah has been selected for the Florida All-State Choir for the past five years. She has also played many lead musical roles such as Maria in West Side Story, Daisy Mae in Li’l Abner, Mary Lennox in The Secret Garden, Little Red Riding Hood in Into the Woods, Mabel in Pirates of Penzance and Marian Paroo in The Music Man. In addition to her music and theater accomplishments, Hannah is a member of the National Honor Society.

Sam Jones – recipient of the Instrumental Scholarship, is a junior at St. Petersburg Collegiate High School, where he is dually enrolled as a high school junior and college freshman. Sam studies with Rob Smith (principal trumpet, The Florida Orchestra) and is coached in Brass Quintet by Carolyn Wahl (horn, The Florida Orchestra). He is Principal Trumpet of the Pinellas Youth Symphony (PYS) and the Patel Conservatory Youth Orchestra. Sam also is on the substitute musician list for The Florida Orchestra. He recently won the Patel Conservatory Youth Orchestra Concerto Competition. Sam has qualified as a semi-finalist at the National Trumpet Competition (NTC) every year since 2007; he won his age category at NTC in 2008. In 2008, Sam also won the Florida Orchestra Young Artist Competition. He has been a Florida All-State musician since 2006. In 2008, he traveled with PYS on their tour of Italy and Austria. In addition, for the past three summers, Sam has attended the Kinhaven Music School in Vermont. In 2009 he attended the Chosen Vale International Trumpet Seminar, where he studied with international soloists/teachers Håkan Hardenberger, Mark Gould, Thomas Stevens, Steven Burns, John Wallace, Ed Carroll and Gabriele Cassone. He will return to Chosen Vale this year. In addition, Sam is a member of the National Honor Society and volunteers for the American Red Cross. He hopes to attend a music conservatory and major in trumpet performance.

David Bawel – recipient of the Drama Scholarship, is a senior at the Pinellas County Center for the Arts (PCCA) at Gibbs High School. David has performed in such productions as Ragtime, Sweeney Todd, A Secret Garden, Pirates of Penzance and served as assistant director for Elephant Man. In addition to his theatrical endeavors, he has sung extensively with various choral groups, including the Ruth Eckerd Hall Teen Choir and Troupe, PCCA Mixed Choir, Stetson Honor Choir and was selected for the Florida All-State Choir for the past five years. David’s list of musical accomplishments also includes proficiency on the piano and violin. He is a member of the National Honor Society. In addition to his artistic and scholastic achievements, David has earned a black-belt in karate. He will attend American University, in Washington D.C., where he plans to focus on a double major of Political Science and Musical Theater.

Nkosi Groover – recipient of the Clearwater Jazz Holiday Scholarship, is a senior at Blake High School. Nkosi has been a musician since the age of six. During his tenure at Blake, he has participated in the Marching Yellow Jackets Band, the Wind Ensemble, the Symphony and the Jazz Ensemble. Nkosi also performs with a private band and is one of the select members of the Ruth Eckerd Hall/Clearwater Jazz Holiday Youth Combo. He studies privately with University of South Florida Jazz Studies director, Jack Wilkins. Nkosi plans to pursue his passion in college, specializing in Jazz Performance.

PASSport Students Reach Out to Help OthersAfter learning about the devastation of the Haiti earthquake earlier this year, the students at Skycrest Elementary School in Clearwater went to their art teacher to ask how they could help. Skycrest students participate in The Marcia P. Hoffman Performing Arts Institute PASSport program. PASSport is a comprehensive on-site school arts infusion program that has been taught at Skycrest for 10 years. 70% of the students attending Skycrest live at or below the poverty level but they wanted to reach out and help others less fortunate. The students and their art teacher came up with an idea – Houses 4 Haiti pins. The pins were sold at Skycrest and the Hoffman Institute for $5.00 each. All proceeds went to the Red Cross. Nearly $350 was raised to help the survivors of the Haiti earthquakes while the Skycrest students learned how it feels to help others. “I feel like creating the Houses 4 Haiti pins was a great learning opportunity and a way for our Skycrest family to give back,” said Gina Sullivan, Skycrest Elementary School Visual Arts Specialist.

Welcome New Legacy Society MemberThe Legacy Society would like to welcome a new member: Tammy Levent, owner of Elite Travel. Tammy has been a supporter of the arts and arts education at Ruth Eckerd Hall since 2007. She recently decided to ensure her support lasted into the future by becoming a member of Ruth Eckerd Hall’s Legacy Society. Tammy says of her ongoing dedication to Ruth Eckerd and becoming a member of the Society, “I am honored to support Ruth Eckerd Hall and excited to know that this gift will enrich the ongoing self expression through the arts for so many creative individuals.”

Leave A Legacy of Your OwnIt started as a dream . . .

Community and civic leaders imagined a gathering place that could house the Tampa Bay area’s performing artists – a stage from which to present the most spectacular and moving performing arts from around the world – a place to educate and enlighten the community and our children.

These visionaries understood that ongoing support of the performing arts is crucial to the entire area’s quality of life. What the project needed was a catalyst – an individual or corporation to take the lead and provide the initial momentum necessary to move this long-held dream successfully toward reality.

Those individuals were June Baumgardner Gelbart (dedicated in memory of her husband, Richard) and Jack and Ruth Eckerd. They helped make a dream come true and started a legacy that has lasted and will last for generations.

Thousands of individuals within our community joined June, Jack and Ruth in the dream of a performing arts center. And, many of our members and supporters have created their own legacy in their own way.

There are a variety of ways to create your own legacy to Ruth Eckerd Hall. They include:
