Movement

Absolute: coordinates of a map using longitude and latitude

Relative: the interaction among & between places examples: next door, nearby, a short drive, down the road a ways.

An area that is defined by certain similar characteristics. Those unifying or similar characteristics can be physical, natural, human, or cultural.

Human-environment interaction looks at the relationships between people and their environment; how people adapt to the environment and how they change it.

Movement refers to the way people, products, information and ideas move from one place to another.

A place is an area that is defined by everything in it. All places have features that give them personality and distinguish them from other places.

0 History is the study of the past

0 A usually chronological record of events, as of the life or development of a people or institution, often including an explanation of or commentary on those events

0 The branch of knowledge that records and analyzes past events

History is, in its essentials, the science of change.

It knows and it teaches that it is impossible to find two events that are ever exactly alike, because the conditions from which they spring are never identical. -- Marc Bloch

0 What is history and why should we study it?0 History:

0 Is the study of the past0 Is the study of human nature0Tries to be as objective as possible0Searches for truth0 Is a process

0 We should study it because:0 It helps us understand our world

0 It helps us understand ourselves

0 It helps us understand our past, so we can navigate our present, and prepare for our future

History is not a

science;

it is a method.

- Charles Seignobos

Introduction to the Historical Process:

Anyone who is going to make

anything out of history will, sooner

or later, have to do most of the work

himself.

He will have to read, and consider,

and reconsider, and then read some

more.

-- Geoffrey Barraclough

History, to be above evasion or dispute, must stand on documents, not on opinions.

-- Lord Acton

0 Historians rely primarily on written evidence to determine how people lived in the past.

0 Recorded history began about 5,000 years ago, when people began to keep written records.

0 Historians are like detectives

0 Sometimes they come to different conclusions.
