Music in Worship: Sunday, February 11, 2018 Feast of the TransfigurationIntroit: O nata lux (Thomas Tallis, c. 1505-1585)O nata lux de lumine, Jesu redemptor saeculi, dignare clemens supplicum laudes precesque sumere. Qui carne quondam contegi dignatus es pro perditis, nos membra confer effici tui beati corporis. O light born of light, Jesus, Saviour of the ages, mercifully deign to receive the praises and prayers of your suppliants. You who once deigned to be clothed in flesh for the lost, bring us together to be made parts of your blessed body.

--10th century Office hymn at Lauds on the Feast of the Transfiguration.

Anthem: Antiphon (Benjamin Britten, 1913-76)Praised be the God of Love, Here below and here above, Who hath dealt his mercies so To his friend and to his foe: That both grace and glory tend Us of old and us in th’end. The great shepherd of the fold Us did make for us was sold. He our foes in pieces brake, Him we touch and Him we take. Wherefore since that he is such, We adore and we do crouch. Lord, thy praises should be more, We have none and we no store. Praised be the God alone, Who hath made of two folds one.

--George Herbert (1593-1633)

About this morning's choral and organ music...One of England’s greatest composers, Thomas Tallis was a Gentleman of the Chapel Royal, and together with his student William Byrd, held a 21-year royal monopoly on music publishing in the country. In O nata lux, Tallis sets the text office hymn for ancient monastic hour of Lauds at the Feast of the Transfigura-tion. The setting is simple and largely homophonic, bringing the words to the fore. Near the close, we hear a so-called “cross-relation”: an ascending line’s C sharp is sung against a descending line’s C natural, a signature compositional quirk of Elizabethan vocal polyphony.Britten’s Antiphon bear the hallmarks of the composer’s style: frequent use of ostinato rhythms and harmonies (brief cells that repeat frequently); abrupt chang-es from loud to soft or faster to slower tempi; and in this work, the juxtaposition of three soprano soloists against the full choir. The closing dialogue of “two” – “one” – “two” – “one” – “ONE” is especially effective. Sir Charles Villiers Stanford (1857-1924) was a Dubliner by birth, and through hard work, giftedness and determination rose to the peerage via important Ox-bridge and London positions; his students are a Who’s Who of British music in the 20th century. Stanford’s own compositional language is conservative, echo-ing that of his German teacher Reinecke and Brahms. The five organ sonatas are composed between 1915-1922, though their language is more akin to Mendels-sohn’s. Benedictus quotes a motif from the eponymous movement in Mozart’s Requiem, heard recently in this church, while the final movement is based on the well-known hymn tune “Hanover”, found at Book of Praise #76. --JO

New Year’s Study Group: “Sir Gawain and the Christian Journey” Just after Christmastide, during the mirth and feasting of the New Year, a visitor arrives at the court of King Arthur, a great knight upon a great steed, both of them green from head to toe. The Green Knight’s challenge draws Sir Gawain, the best of Arthur’s knights, on a year-long Christian journey that is both delightful and profound.

Sir Gawain and the Green Knight is a beautiful tale of resolution, temptation,

courage, humility, faith, and Christian journeying — an excellent companion as we seek to hold firm to our own New Year’s commitments, to deepen our Christian faith, and to “put on the whole armour of God.”

Join us this Thursday, February 15, for Session 4: “Gawain at the Edge of the Grave.” The Study Group meets from 7:00 - 8:30 p.m. in the Session Room with The Rev. Dr. Kay Diviney. Monday, February 12, 7:30 p.m., Thea Calder and Sharon Dworzak continue to host a Sermon Bible Study discussion group in the Session Room from 7:30 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. We will be using today’s sermon as our resource. We look forward to seeing you there.

The Ten Ministers Fund and“The Saints of St. Andrew and St. Paul”

Lent is the time of year when we are asked to support the Ten MinistersFund of The Church of St. Andrew and St. Paul. You will fi nd envelopes in your pew today and each Sunday until Easter.

The Ten Ministers Fund was begun 70 years ago as a way to providea fi nancial gift to ministers across Canada working in isolated or otherdiffi cult conditions, and on the minimum stipend (salary). It is a gift ofencouragement, to let these ministers know that their work is known and appreciated, even by a large urban church very far away.

Here is a letter of thanks from a 2016 recipient from Prince Edward Island:

I want to express my sincerest thanks to both you and to the congre-gation of the Church of St. Andrew and St. Paul for the gift received earlier this year. As you can only imagine, it came as quite a surprise! My wife and I are expecting our second child at the end of April so a portion of this gift was used to help us prepare for our upcoming arrival - a new crib, painting the nursery, etc. Of course the remaining portion was used to help off set the additional expenses that accompany the holiday season.

I must say that I think the “Ten Minister’s Fund” is a tremendous initiative and truly does help to spread joy and unexpected blessings at a time of year when they may be most appreciated. Please share· my words of thanks with the session and all others who may appreciate hearing them.

May God bless you and the folks within the congregation as you con-tinue to share Christ’s love both within Montreal, but also within our denomination at large.

We hope you will be generous in your support of the Ten Ministers Fund. All gifts of $20 or more will receive a receipt for income-tax purposes; please make sure to include your address in the space provided on the envelope. The Stewardship Committee
