Pastor’s Note

Rejoice

Traditionally, the third Sunday of Advent is called “Gaudete Sunday” which means Rejoice! We are half way to Christmas! The pink candle in our Advent wreath signifies joy and hope. Today’s readings focus

on rejoicing.

This weekend we rejoice by announcing the name of our soon to be new parish which will take effect January 6, 2020. Fr. Taylor and I will announce the new name at all of the weekend Masses.

In today’s first reading from Isaiah, we read how a prophet announces that God is approaching to deliver the people freedom and to advance the plan of salvation. In the second reading, from the Letter of James, we are reminded to be patient and do not complain. We are called to serve the Lord as we look forward to his com-ing. In the gospel of St. Matthew, we continue to read about the cousin of Jesus, John the Baptist, who seeks to know if Jesus is the one who is to come. Jesus sends reassurance to the imprisoned John the Baptist, who hears of healing and the Good News proclaimed.

We are called to see, hear, and leap with joy at the com-ing of the Messiah. Advent is the Season to have our faith strengthened and to be reminded of the power of Jesus to work miracles. Believe and rejoice in the Lord always.

Rejoice!

Farewell Christine Pacifico Christine Pacifico has re-signed as the Business Manager of CCEEP. We thank Christine for her service with us these past six months and wish her well on her new journey.

Welcome Frank Grande It gives me great pleasure to welcome Frank Grande as the Business Manager of CCEEP. Frank recently was the Business Manager at Assumption Parish in Bellevue and St. Margaret Mary Parish in Moon Twp. He has expertise working with the Diocese of Pittsburgh financial guidelines, policies and procedures. He and his wife Eileen reside in Bellevue.

Low Gluten Hosts Available I am pleased to announce that CCEEP now has low gluten hosts available at all three of campuses. At daily and Sunday masses there is a “side car” attached to the ciborium that has Gluten Free hosts. Those wishing to receive a Gluten Free host now simply walk forward in the Priest line of the Com-munion procession and when approaching, simply point to the “side car.” We are pleased to offer this to all our parishioners and visitors and now especially as we merge into our new parish family, we encourage our pa-rishioners, family, and friends to visit all three of our cam-puses for worship.

Parish Improvements Several floor tiles inside St. Bede Church that were cracked and damaged over the sum-mer during the STREAM Lab construction below the church have been repaired.

The Sacristy inside St. Bede Church received a fresh coat of paint last week. Special thanks to our Director of Maintenance, Paul Denk, for his painting expertise. Year End Donations As we come close to the end of another year, I want to thank those who have worshiped, prayed and celebrated with us. Your financial contribu-tions help us continue to keep the parish campuses up-dated, clean and comfortable. Please remember to sup-port our soon to be new parish, schools and the Parish Share Campaign. Together we can keep the Catholic Community of the East End, Alive and Well and Growing. Father Taylor’s Reflection It has been said that the only thing that never changes is change itself. A good look at the gospels shows us that Jesus never resisted change, if it provided an opportunity to bring his message to many others. The new year will find us a part of a new parish family. The journey in becoming a

new faith-filled community began nearly five years ago when our three parishes began to work together. We spon-sored Lenten and Advent programs which helped us to know one another. We also had joint meetings of our lead-ership councils which showed us that we indeed have a lot in common. Although the past year has been a challenge, we have done much to bring our ministries and support services together. The journey, however is not over. If we are to succeed we must first of all believe that we can and that the Lord will be on our side continuing to help us carry out our mission to serve the East End communities. Many of you know that I have been a part of this kind of process before. It takes a lot of generosity, openness, and willingness to share our gifts talents and abilities. I know we can do it. We have accomplished much already. I know we are looking forward to a new chapter of love and service. This Sunday's readings are about joy and anticipation. The prophets, Isaiah and John, show us the way as we continue to have a prayerful Advent season in anticipation of new opportunities.

Blood Pressure Screening and Letter Writing will take place in the Chapel at St. James

after the 4 pm and 10 am Masses next weekend. Health Ministry will take blood pressures and Social Justice & Peace Committee will have letters, for you to read and consider signing.

The letters are to US Senators about the current United States’ policy that separates families who are immigrating and the need for comprehensive immigration reform that is respectful of human rights and international law. In this Advent Season we re-flect on the plight of Mary and Joseph traveling to Bethlehem at the time of Jesus’ birth and finding “no room” in the inn.

In our new parish, the opportunity for monthly letter writing will be available at all our campuses.

St. James 20-Bell Carillon will be announc-

ing to Wilkinsburg the coming of Christmas on December 18, 19, and 20 at 5 pm. Michael Kearney will play Christmas carols for about 20 minutes each evening. On Friday, after the bells, Michael

will present a 30 minute organ concert of Christmas music. Please stop by to listen to our beautiful bells... in the church, outside on the sidewalk, in your car, or if you live nearby... open your windows. Hot choco-late will be served every evening.

...to all who participated in the Christian Mothers/Ladies Guild Annual Christmas Party. The party was a big success with the decorations, music, deli-cious food, games and wonderful fellowship;

...to all who participated in Give Big Pittsburgh and Giving Tuesday on December 3 to support our parish social ministries and community outreach. It gave a much-appreciated boost to our ability to respond to our neighbors in need over the Christmas Season;

...to Fr. John Marcucci and the Spiritual Enrich-ment Ministry for the Advent reflection, Something New. Fr. John presented many insights to consider that will help us as we become one parish;

...to all who participated in our annual Christmas Trade Fair last weekend. In addition to the support received by the craftsman, artisans, and farmers through fair trade organizations, purchases of over $6,000 also provided important resources for Catholic Relief Services and Partners in Progress who re-ceived $1,400 to support Fatima House Orphanage and the health clinic in Fondwa, Haiti.

Decorating St. James Church for Christmas is an an-

nual tradition for many, and we welcome everyone, including children, to join us. Decorating is on Sunday, December 22, after the 10 am Mass. We will be hanging wreaths, placing poinsettias, and helping with the set-up of trees and crèche.

Christmas Flower Envelopes are in the

pews at St. James for your contribution or me-

morial offering. You may also use your Faith Direct account, but please remember to notify St. James of-fice if you wish to see it listed on our Christmas Memorial Board.

St. Bede Choir’s Annual Christmas Eve Prelude Concert will be on Tuesday,

December 24, at 9:30 pm at St. Bede. This extended prelude will feature the St. Bede Adult Choir, instrumentalists, and a narrator.

We invite you to join us this Christmas Eve! Mass will immediately follow the conclusion of the concert at 10 pm.

Our Parish Food Banks request canned

pineapple for the month of December.

Please place donated items in the contain-ers available in all our churches.

Thank you for your continued support!

Giving by Way of Your Required Minimum Distribution If you are 70.5 years

of age or older by the end of the year, and have an Individual Retirement Account, not a Roth IRA, that requires a minimum distribution, you may direct all or part of it, up to $100,000), to your Church or another not-for-profit before the end of the calendar year.

By doing so, you won’t have to pay taxes on that portion of your Required Minimum Distribution (RMD). Congress made this provision permanent in 2016. This will allow you to help others, in a tax fa-vored way, even if you can no longer itemize your Federal Tax deductions.

To find out more, talk to your financial advisor or the church office.

Radio Program, with Fr. Tom Burke as host, highlights ele-mentary and secon-dary schools; colleges; youth ministry pro-

grams; and more, and is broadcast every other Sun-day morning on KDKA-AM.

Fr. Tom’s guest on December 22 is Kerri Micknowski, music teacher at St. John the Baptist School in Plum, on the topic of Christmas carols.

See the homepage of our website, cceepgh.org for the link to podcasts of the programs. There are Many Ways

to Help the Ministry Center!

Here Are Two Opportunities: Do you have some carpentry skills? Do you like to build things? The Ministry Center needs a ramp down a shallow pair of outside stairs to facilitate our food pantry distribution.

Can you donate a few hours a week to help with main-tenance? We are in need of an energetic individual or team to clean weekly or biweekly. Flexible hours.

Advent Prayer

Lord Jesus, Master of both the light and the darkness,

send your Holy Spirit upon our preparations for Christmas.

We who have so much to do seek quiet spaces to hear your voice each day.

We who are anxious over many things look forward to your coming among us.

We who are blessed in so many ways long for the complete joy of your kingdom.

We whose hearts are heavy seek the joy of your presence.

We are your people, walking in darkness, yet seeking the light.

To you we say, “Come Lord Jesus! ~Henri J.M. Nouwen
