Fundraisers Thank you to all who attended the 2019 Century Club Banquet dinner a few weeks ago at the Edgewood Coun-try Club. We raised a total of $5,850 from the dinner which will go towards our St. Charles Lwanga 2019 Par-ish Share Goal! Also our Recent Wheeling Island Casino Bus Trip raised $382 and last Saturday’s Meadows Ca-sino Bus Trip raised $816. These profits will go into our Activity Fund. Thank You! Parish Grant Awarded It gives me great pleasure to announce that the Diocese of Pittsburgh has awarded a $25,000 Grant from the Our Campaign for the Church Alive! to be used to help oper-ate our CCEEP Ministry Center! This will be a huge help to continue to staff and operate our Ministry Center to those neighbors in need. The Diocese of Pittsburgh awarded this very generous grant to us recognizing the wonderful work we do here in the Catholic Community of the East End of Pittsburgh! We are also very grateful to the Estate of Veronica A. Kapcar for a generous bequest to St. James Parish. Please remember CCEEP in your Living Will! Pastor’s Note

Thank You! Growing up, I can remember my parents, Bill and Marge, reminding me to always say thank you when someone would do a kind gesture. To this day, I still enjoy writing and receiving thank you notes. Two sim-

ple words we often do not hear enough of...Thank You! This weekend we celebrate the Twenty-Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time, the readings focus on giving thanks. In the first reading from the Book of Kings, we read how Naaman is cured of his leoprosy and offers Elisha to be his servant. Having a conversion, Naaman, who once was worshipping false gods, now wants to follow the Lord. In the Gospel of Luke, Jesus heals ten lepers but only one comes back to give thanks. Lepers were iso-lated from all social interaction and relied on charity of others. In today’s readings both Naaman and the Leper were “outsiders.” It was the faith of Naaman and the Leper to make the healing a possibility. Let us continue to express gratitude to God who loves us deeply in spite of all of our faults.

Thank You!

Becoming One All of the paperwork to request to merge into one parish was submitted to our Regional Vicar, Bishop William Waltersheid this past week. Thank you to the Pastoral Council and Finance Council members for assisting with the process. We are continuing to work to merge the par-ish offices into one building with the St. Bede Rectory becoming the main administration center. The rectory at St. Bede, which has been neglected over the years, continues to be upgraded with improvements with the roof and laundry room repaired and construction has started on the second floor which will be used for more office space. Funds from Our Campaign for the Church Alive are helping make these renovations possi-ble.

Fr. David Taylor continues to live in the Holy Rosary Rectory of St. Charles Lwanga Parish in Homewood, Fr. Augustine and Fr. James continue to live at St. Bede and I reside at St. James in Wilkinsburg.

On Line Giving As we continue to move into being one parish we are going to be using one online giving provider, Faith Direct. St. Bede parishioners who currently use the online giving will be making the transition in the next few months. Please be patient with us as we make this transition.

Father Taylor’s Reflection Our attitudes can often show our gratitude. Over the past few weeks we have had some powerful gospel stories from Luke. We read the story of The Prodigal Son, the dishonest

steward and last week The Story of Lazarus and the rich person. In each of these stories selfish attitudes led to no gratitude. A feeling of deserving everything that we have can leave us with no sense of gratitude. In fact life's challenges everyday show us that we would have nothing without the Lord or one another. No one makes it in this world in and of themselves. The only thing we leave in this world is the good that we have done. It is a real joy to be thankful. One of Pope Francis’ first books was the Joy of the Gospel. Doing good has its own joy and rewards. In the end those who do not return to give thanks will never experience the real gift they have received. A good attitude will always lead to gratitude

Second Collection on October 19 and 20 for World Mission Sunday This year's

theme is "Baptized and Sent: The Church of Christ on Mission in the World."

Pope Francis invites everyone to "rediscover the mis-sionary dimension of our faith in Jesus Christ, a faith graciously bestowed on us in baptism.... Through our communion with God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, we, together with so many of our other brothers and sis-ters, are born to new life.... This missionary mandate touches us personally: I am a mission, always: you are a mission, always; every baptized man and woman is a mission...."

Through this annual collection, parishioners are in-vited to help support more than 1,100 mission de-pendent dioceses in more than half of the world. Through the work of these churches, their witness to Christ is continuing the ongoing relationship with to-day's missionaries.

All of us can be inspired by the words of our chief mis-sionary, Pope Francis.

“The Racist Next Door: How to Have Anti-Racist Conversations” is the topic of

a presentation by Rev. Dr. Carolyn Helsel, a professor at Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary. Dr. Hel-sel describes herself simply as a “white woman who wants to help other white people talk about race.” Her passion to do so led to her award-winning book: “Anxious to Talk About It: Helping White Christians Talk Faithfully About Racism.” Kearns Spirituality Center, 9000 Babcock Blvd, Allison Park, 15101 on Monday November 4, at 7 pm. Donation of $20 is requested. No reservations necessary.

Facilitators, Lead-ers and Assistants are needed for Children’s Liturgy of the Word at St. Bede’s 11 am Mass

and St. James’ 10 am Mass. Children’s Liturgy of the Word is a way for young children to hear the readings in a way that is meaningful to them, and to talk about the scriptures, appropriate to their age and develop-mental abilities. Training will be provided. Help us keep and maintain this important ministry by volun-teering your time.
