Dear John Sample,

Sergeant Tom Shepard went to Afghanistan in answer to his country’s call for warriors to defend our freedom and way of life. Like so many others, he didn’t come back the same.

For Tom, the life-changing event was an IED blast that ripped through his body. He required immediate surgery in Khandahar, then was flown to Germany for more care. Finally Tom was transferred to Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C., where he spent time in the ICU.

Today I’m asking you to take an important step to help meet the needs of our veterans like Tom AND to help honor them in a very special way.

Please let me explain …

These veterans need and deserve our help … and they also deserve our thanks! Tom and so many thousands of veterans like him have sacrificed so much for our country … for you and me.

His left leg was amputated above the knee. It is closed up & healing well. His arms had a lot of shrapnel wounds. Those wounds are now closed up & all bandages have been removed from his arms. He has many stitches in various places on his arms, but they are healing well. Two of Tom’s fingertips were amputated: his forefinger (trigger finger) and ring finger, both on his right hand. The flash burns on his face & arms are also healing well.

Tom’s right leg is the major wound now. A lot of the muscle from mid-calf up is gone. “Miraculously,” as doctors say, all tendons, ligaments, bone and nerves are still intact! For now he continues to go to surgery every 2-3 days for I&D (Irrigation & Debridement) of the wound.

Brandy gives the details matter-of-factly, but Tom survived injuries that could easily have killed him. Little Jade didn’t understand the changes in her daddy. The emotional, physical and spiritual toll of all they have endured is overwhelming some days. And though Tom has come a long way, there is still a very long way to go.

You see, Tom is still looking at months in rehab, more operations and having to learn a whole new way to live. Brandy and Jade, along with other family members have been spending as much time with him as they can.

Your donation today will help veterans, just like Tom and his family, through our many support programs such as Heroes to Hometowns and Operation Comfort Warriors.

A gift of $5, $10 or even $15 will make a difference. Nobody understands the challenges our heroes face more than

– Over Please –

The American Legion. We are an organization of veterans helping veterans. In fact, we are the nation’s oldest and largest war-time veterans service organization.

We represent our heroes in Washington, insuring that our lawmakers never forget the promises they made to our servicemembers. We have field officers in every state helping veterans obtain their benefits and appeal claims. Legionnaires can be found volunteering in military hospitals, assisting wounded warriors and their families. In short, when you send your gift TODAY, you are helping our veterans get needed support through the many programs that The American Legion provides...you are saying “Thank you” in the most practical and important way at the moment when they desperately need to know someone cares.

Enclosed is a very special Wall of Honor card. Please take a moment to complete the enclosed card and return it to me ASAP. I have reserved a spot on our “Wall of Honor” for your card! Whether you wish to honor someone who is currently serving our country or a family member who served years ago ... our “Wall of Honor” will not be complete without YOUR card. STEP #1 Complete the enclosed Wall of Honor card. This is a great way to honor someone in a lasting, meaningful way. I will be sure your card takes its rightful place on our wall with thousands of other cards.

I want all who see the “Wall of Honor” to know we are grateful to those who have served our country and stand ready to help them …we are proud of their service and sacrifice.

STEP #2 Enclose your Wall of Honor card the return envelope I have provided, along with your best gift. The size of your gift is not as important as knowing that you stand with our veterans and wish to honor their bravery and sacrifice.

Once our “Wall of Honor” is complete, we will display it at our National Convention where tens of thousands of veterans will gather to celebrate their service to America and to work on the issues and challenges that face our veterans today. Think of what it will mean to those veterans – who sacrificed so much for our freedom – to see such honor being given to their service! STEP #3 Mail your Wall of Honor card to me along with your donation as quickly as you can. Remember, I have reserved a spot on our “Wall of Honor” for your card. Will you honor those who have shed their blood for our freedom? Will you say to young men and women like Sergeant Shepard, “Thank you and we support you?”

I hope and pray that your answer to these questions will be YES! Remember, I don’t want your spot of honor to be left empty and our wall to be incomplete, so please send your card back to me TODAY!

Yours for our wounded heroes,

William A. Pease National Development Director The American Legion

P.S. Please take a few minutes to complete the enclosed reply form and Wall of Honor card and return them to me, along with your best gift, as quickly as you can get it in the mail. For your card to be included in our “Wall of Honor” and displayed at our National Convention, I must receive it immediately, so please don’t delay.
