Jesus Feeds the Five Thousand
August 16th, 2020 9:30 am
“Trust God to Provide!”
† The Eleventh Sunday after Pentecost – August 16th, 2020 †

NOTES ON TODAY’S SERVICE
The Christian trusts God to provide. The Prayer of the Day summarizes the Sunday: God
reveals his mighty power chiefly in showing mercy and kindness. God feeds hungry mouths
and hungry souls with his gifts of grace. When we bring our problems to Jesus, he will richly
supply all we need.
WELCOME TO OUR GUESTS AND VISITORS THIS MORNING!
We are honored by your presence and invite you to return to worship with us again. If you do
not have a church home, consider making ours – yours! If you would like more information
about Open Bible Lutheran Church, please feel free to speak to Pastor Schulz or to one of the
Greeters. You may reach Pastor Schulz at 352-753-9038. Or go to our web site:
www.openbiblelutheranchurch.com.
FOR YOUR ASSISTANCE
Restrooms can be found on the right side of the Welcome Center
Personal Hearing Assistance Devices are available. Ask an usher.
Please turn off all cell phones Personal and other electronic devices. Thank you.
Prayers for Worship can be found on pages 10 and 11 in the front of the hymnbook.
Applause: Please refrain from any applause during the service.
† For respect of those who use the sanctuary for meditation before the service, please refrain
from any unnecessary noise once the pre-service music has begun. †
Lord’s Supper Practice: In I Corinthians 10:16, it tells us that we who are one body, are one
loaf in communion. What that means is that we share a unity in what we believe from God’s
Word when we take communion. If you are a guest, we would like to have an opportunity to
speak with you first to see if what you believe from the Scriptures is the same as what we
believe. If it is the same, then we welcome you to join us for the Lord’s Supper. Also, we are
demonstrating love by asking you to refrain from the Lord’s Supper until we have a chance to
talk with you. In I Corinthians 11:27, we are told that the Lord’s Judgment comes upon those
who eat or drink in an unworthy manner. We want to protect you from that possibly happening
to you. So give our pastor a call, and he will come by to discuss our practice of close
communion.

CONFESSION OF SINS
P: In the name of our God, to whom all hearts are open and from whom no secrets are
hidden. Amen.
Penitent:
Almighty God, merciful Father, I, a troubled and repentant sinner, confess that I
have sinned against you in my thoughts, my words, and my actions. I have not
loved you with my whole heart; I have not loved others as I should. I am
distressed by the sins that trouble me and am deeply sorry for them.
P: Jesus says to his people: “If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven.” His death
paid for the guilt of your sins of the whole world. Do you believe this?
Penitent:
Yes, I believe.
P: Because of the promise of our Savior Jesus, I forgive you all your sins. Be assured that
you are a dear child of God and an heir of eternal life.
Pastor and Penitent: O Lord, my God, I called to you for help, and you answered me. I
thank you for the love you have shown me in Jesus Christ, my Savior. Through
him you have rescued me from the guilt of my sin and given me the peace of
forgiveness. Help me fight against temptation, correct whatever wrongs I can, and
serve you and those around me with love and good works. In Jesus’ name, I pray.
Amen.
P: Go in peace. The Lord be with you.
P: In the peace of forgiveness, let us praise the Lord.
C: CW # 234 “Praise to the Lord, the Almighty”
Praise to the Lord, the Almighty, the King of creation!
O my soul, praise him, for he is your health and salvation!
Let all who hear Now to his temple draw near,
Joining in glad adoration! (CW 234 v.1)
Praise to the Lord, Oh let all that is in me adore him!
All that has life and breath, come now with praises before him!
Let the Amen sound from his people again;
Gladly forever adore him! (CW 234 v.5)

WE GATHER AROUND HIS WORD
First Lesson: Isaiah 55:1-5
“Come, all you who are thirsty,
come to the waters;
and you who have no money,
come, buy and eat!
Come, buy wine and milk
without money and without cost.
Why spend money on what is not bread,
and your labor on what does not satisfy?
Listen, listen to me, and eat what is good,
and you will delight in the richest of fare.
Give ear and come to me;
hear me, that your soul may live.
I will make an everlasting covenant with you,
my faithful love promised to David.
See, I have made him a witness to the peoples,
a leader and commander of the peoples.
Surely you will summon nations you know not,
and nations that do not know you will hasten to you,
because of the Lord your God,
the Holy One of Israel,
for he has endowed you with splendor.” NIV-1984
Response: The trio will sing the first line of the verses. Congregation sings the 2nd line,
REFRAIN, and the Glory be to the Father…
PSALM 78 REFRAIN
† The Eleventh Sunday after Pentecost – August 16th, 2020 †
6
Psalm Tone verses
Trio: Congregation:
1. O my people, hear my teaching; listen to the words of my mouth.
2. I will utter things from of old, what we have heard and what our fathers
have told us.
3. We will not hide them from our we will tell the next generation the praise-
children; worthy deeds of the LORD.
REFRAIN
4. The LORD decreed statues for Jacob and established the law in Israel.
5. So the next generation would know them, and they in turn would tell their children.
6. Then they would put their trust in God and would not forget his deeds but would
keep his commands.
Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
As it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen.
REFRAIN
Second Lesson: Romans 8:35-39
Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or
famine or nakedness or danger or sword? As it is written:
“For your sake we face death all day long; we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered.”
No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am
convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the
future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able
to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Response:
Verse of the Day:
C: Alleluia. Jesus replied, “If anyone loves me, he will obey my teaching. My Father
will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him.” Alleluia.

Gospel Lesson: Matthew 14:13-21 Please stand
When Jesus heard what had happened, he withdrew by boat privately to a solitary place.
Hearing of this, the crowds followed him on foot from the towns. When Jesus landed and saw a
large crowd, he had compassion on them and healed their sick.
As evening approached, the disciples came to him and said, “This is a remote place, and it’s
already getting late. Send the crowds away, so they can go to the villages and buy themselves
some food.”
Jesus replied, “They do not need to go away. You give them something to eat.”
“We have here only five loaves of bread and two fish,” they answered.
“Bring them here to me,” he said. And he directed the people to sit down on the grass. Taking
the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke the
loaves. Then he gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the people. They all
ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces that were
left over. The number of those who ate was about five thousand men, besides women and
children.
Response:
P: Here ends the Gospel,
C: Praise be to God!

SERMON:
Text: Romans 8:35-39
“Faith Over Fear!” Pastor Mark M. Schulz
NICENE CREED
We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, Maker of heaven and
earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.
We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally
begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God,
begotten, not made, of one being with the Father. Through him all things were
made. For us and for our salvation, he came down from heaven, was incarnate of
the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary and became fully human. For our sake he
was crucified under Pontius Pilate. He suffered death and was buried. On the
third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into
heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory
to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.
We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds
from the Father and the Son, who in unity with the Father and the Son is
worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one
holy Christian and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the
forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the
world to come. Amen.
WE GATHER FOR THANKSGIVING
Prayers of the Church
In peace, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy.
For courage not to be conformed to the world but renewed in mind and spirit, for the many
whom the Lord has made His one body, the Church, and for those who will know Him through
our faithful words and works, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy.
For the victims of violence and oppression, for those who live with injustice and fear, and for

all the nations and their leaders, that they may act for peace and promote godliness among the
peoples, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy.
For our troubled world, torn apart by hatred and war, that in the midst of every crisis Christ
may be revealed as the Prince of Peace between God and his world, and between the peoples of
the world, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy.
For the places where God’s people teach and learn, for teachers and students as they begin
another school year, and for a renewed sense of wonder at God’s creation and an appreciation
for His wisdom, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy.
For the sick and those who suffer, for the disabled, for the troubled of heart or mind, for the
grieving and for the dying [especially for these servants of God: _____________], let us pray
to the Lord: Lord, have mercy.
For the faithful stewardship of God’s resources, for the faithful support of the work of the
Kingdom, for the generous support of those called to serve us in the Lord’s name, let us pray to
the Lord: Lord, have mercy.
Into Your hands, O Lord, we commend all for whom we pray, trusting in Your mercy, through
Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.
LORD’S PRAYER (Traditional)
Our Father, who art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be
done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; And forgive us
our trespasses, As we forgive those who trespass against us; And lead us not into
temptation, But deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and
the glory forever and ever. Amen.
WE GATHER AROUND THE LORD’S TABLE
Guests and visitors please read the note about our Communion Practice on the page 2.
P: Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night he was betrayed, took bread; and when he had given
thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take and eat; this
is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.”
Then he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it to them saying, “Drink
from it all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, which is poured
out for you for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, whenever you drink it, in
remembrance of me.”

Response: CW # 309 “Draw Near and Take the Body of the Lord” vs 1 & 3
C: Draw near and take the body of the Lord,
And drink the holy blood for you outpoured.
Offered was he for greatest and for least,
Himself the victim and himself the priest.
Come forward, then, with faithful hearts sincere.
And take the pledges of salvation here.
Before your altar, Lord, your servants bow;
In this your feast of love be with us now.
Distribution – Piano interlude by Randy Cochran
At the close of distribution and at the direction of the Pastor, we will sing the response:
CW # 318 “Sent Forth by God’s Blessing”
C: Sent forth by God’s blessing,
Our true faith confessing,
The people of God from his dwelling take leave.
The supper is ended;
Oh, be now extended
The fruits of this service in all who believe.
The seed of his teaching,
Receptive souls reaching,
Shall blossom in action for God and for all.
His grace did invite us;
His love shall unite us
To work for God's kingdom and answer his call.
WE GATHER FOR DISMISSAL INTO OUR MISSION FIELD
P: We give thanks, almighty God, that you have refreshed us with this holy supper.
We pray that through it you will strengthen our faith in you and increase our
love for one another. We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ, our Lord, who
lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
† The Eleventh Sunday after Pentecost – August 16th, 2020 †

P. Brothers and sisters, go in peace. Live in harmony with one another.
Serve the Lord with gladness.
The Lord bless you and keep you.
The Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you.
The Lord look on you with favor and give you peace.
CLOSING HYMN CW # 243 “Oh, Worship the King” vs 1, 2 & 3
C: Oh, worship the King, all-glorious above;
Oh gratefully sing his pow'r and his love,
Our shield and defender, the Ancient of Days,
Pavilioned in splendor and girded with praise.
Oh, tell of his might; oh, sing of his grace,
Whose robe is the light, whose canopy, space.
His chariots of wrath the deep thunderclouds form,
And dark is his path on the wings of the storm.
This earth, with its store of wonders untold,
Almighty, your pow'r has founded of old,
Established it fast by a changeless decree,
And round it has cast, like a mantle, the sea.
