Special Observances and Saints

Monday: First Week in Ordinary Time; St. Hilary Friday: St. Anthony Saturday: Week of Prayer for Chris an Unity begins

This Sunday’s celebra on of the Bap sm of the Lord closes the Christmas season. In the scriptures we see one more epiphany, or manifesta on, of the Spirit of God in Jesus—but this me it is as an adult, rather than as a child. Jesus’ Bap sm also serves as the inaugura on of His prophe c mission and the Messianic age. Today’s reading from Isaiah describes God’s chosen Mes-siah, upon whom God’s spirit rests. In the Acts of the Apos-tles Peter says that “God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power” (Acts 10:38). Finally, in the proclama on from Ma hew’s Gospel Jesus’ Bap sm in water goes almost unno ced. The crucial moment comes when the Spirit of God comes upon Jesus, and a voice from heaven echoes the words of Isaiah: “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased” (Ma hew 3:17). Dear Parishioners, I would like to take this opportunity to express my hear elt thanks to Janèt Sullivan Whitaker for her decade of service to our parish as she prepares to begin a new chapter in her ministerial career. During the me that I have had the privilege and pleasure of working with her, she has enriched our worship and prayer in so many ways. Let us ask God to bless her and her family as she leaves St. Joan of Arc Parish, that she will con nue to use her many gi s to render praise and glory to God. Fr. Ray Sacca

Pray for the recently baptized On Saturday, January 11, we welcomed to our parish community newly bap zed:

Noa Olivia Chumi

We ask the that you pray for Noa and her parents as they grow in faith together.

The Parish Office will be closed on Monday, January 20, 2020 in observance of Dr. Mar n Luther King, Jr. Day.

Excepts From Pope Francis’ Christmas Eve Homily “Christmas reminds us that God con nues to love us all, even the worst of us, because we are precious in His eyes. His love is uncondi onal; it does not depend on us. How o en do we think that God is good if we are good and pun-ishes us if we are bad. Yet that is not how He is… His love does not change. It is not fickle; it is faithful. It is pa ent. Grace is a synonym of beauty and in the beauty of God’s love, we also discover our own beauty, for we are beloved of God. In His eyes we are beau ful, not for what we do but for what we are. Contemplate the Child and let ourselves be caught up in His tender love. At Christmas, the ques on is: ‘Do I allow myself to be loved by God? Do I abandon myself to His love that comes to save me?’ Accep ng this gi of grace means being ready to give thanks in return. Today is the right day to draw near to the tabernacle, the crèche, the manger, and to say thank you. Let us receive the gi that is Jesus, in order then to become gi like Jesus. To become gi is to give meaning to life. And it is the best way to change the world.”

Prayers for our military Keep in prayer our brave parishioners, rela ves and friends of our parish family who are in service to their country in the Armed Forces abroad: Ben Young We ask the Lord to keep them safe from harm and pray for their families while they are far from home. To add a name to this list, which we will include the bulle n as o en as possible, please email Raymond at [email protected]

Grow In Faith Together with us! THIS WEEK’S GIFT PROGRAM

SUNDAY, JANUARY 12, 1:30—3:00 pm KICK-OFF KEYNOTE MESSAGE! Fr. Vince Sco , “MYSTERY AND MYTH: Their Role in our Faith” [w1] Is "Myth" something that is untrue or can it challenge our finite minds to go deeper into some aspects of our faith? Is “Mystery” just one of those Catholic words in a scien fic era that demands concrete answers? We will see how to use myth and mystery to help us unfold the marvelous ways that God has spoken to us ... and con nues to do so ... as we encounter Jesus in our lives. We will touch on the crea on story in Genesis and its rela onship to other stories of crea on, the Immaculate Concep on of Mary, the Virgin Birth, the Assump on of Mary into heaven and more. We will encounter myth and mystery in a way that will expand our understanding of God’s goodness in sending Jesus into our world. MONDAY, JANUARY 13, 7:00 - 8:30 pm Carrie Rehak, Ph.D. “RESTORATIVE PRACTICES FOR PARISHES, SCHOOLS, FAMILIES . . . AND BEYOND” [w2] While many people are familiar with restora ve jus ce as an alterna ve or complement to the criminal jus ce system, conflict and harm can happen anywhere that community is present. Moreover, restora ve prac ces not only focus on conflicts and harms, but also on community-building, and can be used in any number of venues, such as schools and parishes. In this session, we will explore general principles of restora ve jus ce; key prac ces, such as “circle” process-es; and ways of pu ng them to use, in ministries, in life.

Michele Walsh, “ANIMATING THE LAITY TO EFFECT CHANGE IN THE CHURCH (AND WORLD)” [w3] Together, we are the Church, the Body of Christ, the People of God. From the beginning, the Church has faced challenges to unity, to who is in and who is out. We all have issues and disappointments in our rela onship with the Church at mes. We are a Church of darkness and light. What can we learn from the past when faced with similar challenges? How do we move from being silent observers to being ac ve par cipants, owning our responsibility to effect change? Who will come forward at this cri cal me? Fr. Rusty Shaunessy, “WALKING IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF ST. FRANCIS” [w4] When Fr. Jorge Mario Bergoglio selected St. Francis of Assisi as his papal tle, we gained some insight into what the papacy would look like. Over five years later, we can see the Franciscan influence on the Church, from Pope Francis’ love and compassion for the sick and poor, to social jus ce issues and respect for the environment. Together, we will learn how professed Franciscans live out St. Francis’ charism today. Join us as Secular (Third Order) Franciscans in our own parish share their stories and answer your ques ons about Franciscan life. TUESDAY, JANUARY 14 Kathy Coffey, “WILL THE REAL MARY MAGDALENE STAND UP? Stand Back!” [w5] We’ll start by debunking the myths of Mary Magdalene that tarnished her real role for centuries. Then we’ll explore why Jesus chose this dynamo (at a me when women couldn’t even be legal witnesses in court) to tell the good news of His resurrec on to the apostles. Though there is s ll much we don’t know about Mary, we can engage her by praying with the ques ons Jesus asked her in John’s gospel. We’ll try to understand why Jesus tells her not to cling to Him a er His resurrec on. Finally, we’ll see how Mary Magdalene lives on in the spirit of gutsy women today.

We are told that mercy begins right here, with each of us. How do we cul vate mercy in our own lives? How do we put mercy into ac on? Join one of our favorite GIFT speakers, Fr. Mark Wiesner, as he starts us off with love, the root of mercy, and explores the steps to leading truly merciful lives, surrendered to God’s own mercy for us and connected to every other human being … liberated from ever judging others again. KEYNOTE MESSAGE! Fr. Jim Sullivan, DISCERNING GOD’S WILL [w12] Most Catholics feel at a loss as to how to listen to God's voice, how to interpret what He is saying to them, how to make the right choice when confronted with life's decisions. This workshop will introduce us to invaluable tools for one's ongoing discernment throughout life. We will apply the lessons from the book of Exodus by applying our contemporary “American Exodus from the land of plenty into the desert” in order to help us navigate through and be er understand America's current hardships.

Steve Wilcox and Jim Peterson, CHRISTIANITY IN THE HOLY LAND [w8] In and around Bethlehem, Chris ans have gone from around 80 percent of the popula on just a er the establishment of the state of Israel in 1950, to around 12 percent today. Together, we will explore the factors that are driving this drama c reduc on in the popula on of Chris ans in the land where Jesus lived … and what this means for us. Jan Stegner, MTS, MFMC, WALKING WITH MARY FROM NAZARETH . . .TO THE CROSS [w9] We will follow the life of Mary-from a humble, young Jewish girl from Nazareth, to the ever loving and faithful Mother of God. We will talk about her ‘fiat’, yes to the Angel Gabriel, her life as portrayed in the Gospels, the birth of Christ, and her walk with her Son as he takes His final steps to His death. We will also ask and reflect on the ques on, “How does Mary con nue to walk with us today?” David Tomcik, HEAVENLY ESTATE PLANNING: Stewarding God’s gi s even a er death [w10] Estate Planning is good stewardship. It is an opportunity to prayerfully consider the many blessings that God has given to you and your family during your life. Through your estate plan, you give your loved ones the gi of peace of mind by reducing to a minimum the burdens associated with illness and death. Your estate plan is the fulfill-ment of God's will as you prayerfully consider the needs of your family and community.

Gospel Reading Ma hew 3:13-17 The Spirit of God comes upon Jesus as He is bap zed by John. Family Connection

At Jesus’ Bap sm, God affirms His Son’s mission for salva on. God announces His pleasure with Jesus and, in Ma hew’s Gospel, announces to all that, “This is my beloved Son” (Ma hew 3:17). With this affirma on, Jesus is able to resist the tempta ons described next in Ma hew’s Gospel and to begin his public ministry. As family members, we can support one another in our Chris an living by affirming the importance of each person in our eyes and in God’s. Confident that through

our Bap sm, we too, were made children of God, we can resist tempta on and share in Christ’s mission. Gather as a family to read today’s Gospel, Ma hew 3:13-17. Recall that God’s message about Jesus was meant for us, “This is my beloved Son.” It was also an affirma on for Jesus about His role in God’s plan. Place each family member’s name on a slip of paper, and put the names in a bowl. Invite each person in the family to choose another family member’s name and to prepare a message for that person, affirming their importance in God’s eyes and in your family life. Pray together that your family will con nue to support one another in your bap smal promises to be disciples of Jesus and then invite each person to read aloud the message they prepared. Conclude by praying together the Lord’s Prayer.
