President/Chairs Letter 2016 – We Are Stronger Together We work with amazing Corporate Members and Minority Business Enterprise (MBEs). Our Corporate Members set the standards for best practices in supplier diversity. Our MBEs work tirelessly every day to build the businesses that grow our economy, and they are the most likely to reach back and hire an inclusive and diverse workforce and buy from other MBE firms to support their growth. As an organization dedicated to connecting these two groups, we know we are very fortunate to work with many, many strong businesses, and we also know that together the work we do in supplier diversity has so much more impact, our voice is louder, and the capacity we build is greater when we do it together.

That is why 2016 marked such a major milestone for the North Central Minority Supplier Development Council (NCMSDC). It was the celebration of the 40th Anniversary of our organization’s largest business connector, the Minnesota Business Opportunity Fair (MBOF); a celebration of four decades of all of us coming together to say corporate supplier diversity programs and capacity building for MBEs is critically important and talking about it together is the best way to bring about change. The work we started 40 years ago together created an MBOF in 2016 where corporations with a commitment to spend $1.1 billion were connected to diverse suppliers and certified MBEs for two days of innovative conversations, networking and one-on-one matchmaking. When we think of the opportunities, the relationships turned into contracts, and multiply it by 40 years — it’s quite an impact, and we did that by working together.

The MBOF 40th Anniversary was just one of 20 business opportunity fairs/procurement/networking events NCMSDC produced last year for nearly 3,000 attendees. The events took place throughout the region creating targeted business connection opportunities for our Corporate Members and MBEs in each market we serve. The WBOF brought together nearly 300 corporations and businesses and the IBOF brought together over 75. All of this was in addition to providing ongoing certification and recertification services and capacity building support to MBEs.

These programs and services could not be offered without the support of our Board of Directors, dedicated staff, Corporate Members, MBEs, volunteers, and supporters. Thank you for continued commitment and dedication to increasing the capacity of MBEs and leading the way to develop world class supplier diversity programs.

We truly are stronger together because of the work we do together.

U.S. BankWhy Does U.S. Bank Value Supplier Diversity? Our success is directly related to the vitality of the communities we serve. Our communities — spanning from the Ohio Valley to the Twin Cities to the Rocky Mountains to the Pacific Ocean — are made up of an increasingly diverse population. Diverse suppliers are rapidly growing and progressing from suppliers of small commodity lines to providers of a wide variety of manufactured products and corporate services. By doing business with diverse suppliers, we’re building bridges within the community and contributing to the growth of companies who, in turn, help us build the best bank in America.

ManpowerGroup ManpowerGroup is the world leader in innovative workforce solutions, connecting human potential to the power of business. ManpowerGroup serves both large and small organizations across all industry sectors through our brands and offerings: ManpowerGroup Solutions, Experis, Manpower and Right Management. The global company has over 30,000 employees in 80 countries and territories.

Manpower was founded in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, U.S., in 1948 by attorneys Elmer Winter and Aaron Scheinfeld. Manpower began with an idea — Winter and Scheinfeld needed a typist to work on a deadline project but were unable to source a substitute on a temporary basis. This led them to ask other businesses how they coped with staffing emergencies — none had a satisfactory answer. Winter and Scheinfeld concluded that there was a market for a temporary help agency — and Manpower was born.

In 2011, Manpower Inc. became ManpowerGroup, evolving to reflect the new challenges and complexity brought by the Human Age and to reflect this new reality, better articulate its family of brands and suite of solutions.

Michels CorporationMichels is a family owned business that started in 1959 as a gas pipeline contractor providing the construction and installation of natural gas distribution systems to Wisconsin utilities. Evolving over time, Michels continues to meet customers’ needs by safely extending the limits of utility construction. Michels remains an industry leader by delivering world-class service, mastering emerging technologies and providing new services. They are headquartered in Wisconsin with over 30 locations across the US and Canada.

Michels completed a world-record 12,459-foot horizontal directional drill installation, a 4,038-foot direct pipe installation that set a North American record, and a robust fiber optic network on five islands in American Samoa. Michels continues to be recognized internationally for innovation, efficiency and reliability.

Core Values

• We take pride in our reputation for quality work performed safely and with care for our environment. • We have sustainable and profitable operations driven by our ability to execute swift decisions. • Our people are dedicated, innovative and hardworking. • Our actions are characterized by integrity, trust and respect. • We are committed to teamwork.

Supplier Diversity Commitment

Officially Michels started its Corporate Supplier Diversity program in 2011 (the same year they joined the North Central Minority Development Council), however, the company has been tracking diverse supplier spend since 2007. Michels self-performs most construction activities on projects, but hires local, specialized contractors when efficiencies can be gained. Whenever possible, Michels seek the services of qualified small disadvantaged, veteran, women and/or minority owned (D/V/WMBE) businesses.

In keeping with Michels’ core values and their commitment to social responsibility it is the company policy to provide D/V/WMBE firms the maximum practicable opportunities to participate in the projects they undertake and to help customers achieve their goals for D/V/WMBE participation.

Michels’ established Supplier Diversity Manager and Procurement Team are continuously looking to expand and improve our supplier base with the addition of small and diverse businesses. They work directly with D/V/WMBE firms to help them build a resume that will aid them in securing work from coast to coast while still supporting Michels.

Today, between $60-$80 million dollars are invested each year with diverse suppliers. This number can increase depending upon the work they are doing, the location of the project and the area of country we are working in.
