Prayer Gathering-November 29th at 11:15 AM As we move into the Christmas Season most of us are filled with the anticipation of celebrating God's gift to us in Jesus, the Christ. With all the joy and happiness surrounding us, we don't forget the very real suffering, loneliness, and pain in our lives and the lives of others. Both the joy and the fear we lay before the manger. While studying Evangelism, we have heard the message over and over, "Pray for your congregation, for in those group conversations with God, the Spirit will move." Earlier this year the Evangelism Team held a prayer gathering and did special intercessory prayer for a very sick member of our congregation. Not only is he healing, but all who participated felt blessed. On Sunday, November 29, following the 10 o'clock fifth Sunday service, we will hold another prayer gathering in the parlor. If there are more of us than fit comfortably in the parlor feel called to join the gathering, as we'll move to the sanctuary. All who wish to participate are invited and called to join us. If you have a prayer request, write it down and give it to Greg, or email it to him. We will ask the Holy Spirit to come and be with us. We will have a time of silent preparing, a song, a time of Scripture reading, prayers for healing, discernment, guidance, and whatever and for whoever you ask for. We will truly lay our hearts out for God to clean and heal. We will pray aloud, and in silence. We expect the gathering to last about 20 minutes, but if some are called to stay and pray longer, they will not be alone. Singing will be led by Greg on the guitar. If you have a particular favorite hymn of yours or someone you are holding up in prayer let Sherri Siler or Greg know. We will have an opening and closing hymn.

What is the history of the Thank Offering? In 1888, when Eliza Clokey of Springfield, Ohio, urged each woman to give one dollar over and above her usual contribution to the Women’s General Missionary Society of the United Presbyterian Church of North America as a “thank offering to her Lord,” women responded and the Thank Offering was born. The gifts represented much soul-searching and self-sacrificing on the part of many women. It has been said that women’s giving saved the worldwide missionary movement at that time. The thrust of how and where the money was used has changed over the years, but a “thank offering to our Lord” continued to be an important part of women’s giving in the United Presbyterian Church in the U.S. A. (and United Presbyterian Women). This expression of Thanksgiving is now an important part of Presbyterian Women’s Celebration Giving program.

What is the Thank Offering? The Thank Offering is one of two monetary offerings of Presbyterian Women in the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), Inc. These offerings are an extension of, but separate from, Presbyterian Women’s Mission Pledge support.

When is the Thank Offering received? The Thank Offering is received annually in the fall. Many women use an offering envelope or box for daily/weekly/monthly offerings of thanks. These gifts may be dedicated at a gathering of PW in the Congregation, a Sunday worship service or some other special occasion in the fall. The offering should be sent to the treasurer of Presbyterian Women in the Presbytery by December 10.

In the month of November the St. Philip Sunday School children and youth will be studying:

Birth-Age 2 will hear Bible stories that are designed for young learners.

Ages 2 years thru Pre K are studying “Abraham & Sarah” from the Hands on Bible curriculum.

Ages K-2nd grade and 3rd-5th grade are using the Growing with Grace and Gratitude curriculum, which is rooted in the foundation of Presbyterian identity where God's grace and our gratitude are the heartbeat of our faith, life, and worship. This curriculum extends an invitation to discipleship that inspires children to learn and practice hospitality, generosity, and love. It reaches beyond Sunday morning, encouraging children to live their lives as an expression of God's grace.

Jr. High & Sr. High will be using Feasting on the Word, which provides opportunities for this age group to explore their personal and communal identity in Jesus Christ through meaningful community-building experiences, engaging Bible study, and relevant learning activities. Biblical stories will come alive in new and creative ways. In response to God’s amazing, unconditional love, youth will be challenged to put their faith into action as they grow to understand themselves as Christ’s disciples.

Youth & Family Thanksgiving Potluck

Note of the Week……………… As many of you know, I was founder and Managing/Artistic Director for the Regal Opera Company for twenty years. The company still exists but is now called the Regal Opera Company Chorale which has existed for ten years and is under the umbrella of the ROC. (Many of you heard the Chorale performing the Requiem by Mark Hayes with the St. Philip Chancel Choir last spring in fellowship Hall!) The Chorale is made up of twelve to twenty talented singers who meet at St. Philip to rehearse, and they have two seasons culminating in a spring concert and a Christmas show! I would like to invite you to the Chorale’s public Christmas concerts occurring on December 3rd at the Old Bedford School House and December 15th at the Cottage Theater in Watauga. (See the ad below for more information.) The show is an hour long and filled with familiar songs—“Silent Night”, “I Saw Three Ships” and “O Holy Night”—as well as the lighter side—“Blue Christmas” by the Chorale men (including our Elvis impersonator) and “Christmas Island” by the ladies! And I have to mention our “Holiday Dinner Party” solo sung by Anicia Brown as the most hilarious holiday song you will hear all season!! So please bring your children and/or grand-children to this entertaining show to get you in the spirit of Christmas! See you there! This Sunday the Hand Bell Choir is playing “Canticle of Hope” arranged by Cynthia Dobrinski and the Chancel Choir is singing “Canticle of Fellowship” by Craig Courtney. (Canticle means “a hymn or chant with a biblical text, forming a regular part of a church service.”) Some of the words to “Canticle of Fellowship” are: Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe your-selves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Forgive each other as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues put on love.

See you in church on Sunday.

Joyfully Singing in Christ, Pam Cochrane

Did you know... that the St. Philip Chancel Choir is performing their Christmas Cantata on December 13th for both the 8:30 and 11:00 worship services? No? Well, we are singing A Festival of Lessons and Carols by Hal Hopson with a chamber ensemble! Our own Melanie and Tom Demer will be playing violin and viola with Lynn Garis on Hand Bells! And a word about our dear Hal Hopson...he is a wonderful gentleman and full-time composer and church musician residing in Cedar Park, Texas. He has composed over 1,000 works which comprise almost every musical form in church music! Please put this date on your calendars and sing along with us as we present this well-known work of church music!

Inclement Weather Closing

The Church Office will follow the HEB School District inclement weather closings. The office will send an announcement to the congregation through our mass email.

Local TV and radio stations will also broadcast information regarding closings and delays should your internet go down.

College Care Packages The church will be sending "finals" care packages to our students again this semester, as a way of extending our thoughts and care to them during this stressful time. Our students attend colleges and universities all over the United States. We will be assembling these packages at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, December 2nd in the church parlor. If anyone would like to send a note or card to a specific student, please get it to me prior to December 2nd and we will make sure it gets into the proper box. And if anyone is available to help assemble the boxes on that date, please email me and let me know.

We are needing items to include in these boxes such as gum, pens, mechanical pencils, individually wrapped candies, cookies and crackers, fruit rollups, microwave popcorn, post-it notes, highlighters, sharpies, easy Mac, goldfish, Kleenex-individual packs, cereal bars or anything you liked in college or your student likes.

In past years, the members of our congregation have generously given all the items that we put in the boxes. After we stuff the boxes full, any leftover goodies are donated to children who stay in the Presbyterian Night Shelter. If you can help us again, please leave your items in the Church Office.

To the parents of college students - if your student is new to the college scene this semester, or if your student's status or address has changed, please email me ASAP. We want to be sure that we include all of our college students.

Thank you in advance for all of your help.

That’s Nuts! SO…a crazy thing is true about your Associate Pastor...she is allergic to nuts. Her allergy is getting worse and many in the congregation have asked what this means and how to help. This puts her in a unique position to provide a little bit of information about nut allergies. As allergies are on the rise in our communities, it may help for us all to know a little more. Each allergy is unique, but please feel free to ask Rev. Alissa King if you have any questions.

What nut is not a nut?

“A true nut, botanically speaking, is a hard-shelled pod that contains both the fruit and seed of the plant, where the fruit does not open to release the seed to the world. Some examples of botanical nuts are chestnuts, hazelnuts, and acorns.” Below is a chart that includes some examples.

More information: An adult onset nut allergy gets worse with each exposure. This is the case for Alissa. Her reactions began with a rash, itching and quickly progressed to difficulty breathing. So shouldn’t she just avoid eating them? Of course! Just as with any allergy the individual must watch what they eat and touch, but also airborne particles are more common with nuts than with other allergens. This means that those with nut allergies can have allergic reactions to particles in the air without ever touching or ingesting the nut. If it is in the room, it can be in the air or on surfaces and can cause a reaction.

What can you do to help? Try to avoid bringing nuts to church, label foods that have nuts in them, wash your hands thoroughly if you have been eating nuts before giving the associate pastor a high five or handshake, wipe down surfaces thoroughly if nut products have been used.

Thank you all for your concern and care. For an article on Food Allergies and Communion see the following. http://chreader.org/in-remembrance-of-me/ For more information https://www.foodallergy.org/allergens/tree-nut-allergy

Jump 4 Joy

Dear SPPC Members and Friends of the 2016 Jump 4 Joy Benefit;

This month, the SPPC JUMP 4 JOY Host Committee (Mission Outreach committee) is launching the 3rd annual "2016 JUMP for JOY" fundraising campaign. We hope to enlist at least twenty or more St. Philip volunteers to seek JUMP 4 JOY donations from the HEB-ISD community at-large before the end of the year. Please read on….

The Purpose of the Jump 4 Joy Benefit: Host and provide a fundraising event for HEB-ISD Family Support Services. As of September, 2015, Director Ellen Lobue of HEB-ISD Family Services, has identified nearly 800 HEB-ISD families that will need financial, medical, or housing assistance in 2016. This is over 100 more families than when we began hosting the event in 2013.

SPPC 2016 J4J Goal: Raise $10,000 for HEB-ISD Family Support Services to serve the 800 families in need; doubling the donations received in February 2015. The joyful and lively event is scheduled for February 7th, 2016, 5-7:30 p.m. in Fellowship Hall. There will be several live performances, a silent art auction, food, and valentine cupcakes by the HEB-ISD culinary, visual, and performing arts.

SPPC-J4J November thru December Focus: In order to reach our 2016 goal, we are creating a 20-30 member J4J Donations Task Force to campaign and request donations from the HEB community at large. This year, we are targeting local businesses, churches, HEB-ISD departments and affiliated associations, chambers of commerce, as well as various community organizations.

-The J4J Task force will be comprised primarily of church members as well as HEB-ISD community members. Each member should consider enlisting the help of a community partner, neighbor, or friend to assist in seeking donations. Enlisting the help of a friend or neighbor would also help increase community awareness, and publicize the J4J Benefit.

-By November 15th, each task force partner will be assigned 5-10 potential community donors and be expected to make an initial contact by email or phone (a script will be provided)

-By December 20th, each task member will: schedule a brief appointment with the potential donor to personally present a J4J/HEB ISD Family Services brochure, a flyer to post in

their place of business, and a donation card ($25.00, $50.00, $100.00 and other_______. follow through with a donation “Thank You” note, certificate, and an invitation to the

Feb. 7th benefit upon receiving a donation.

St. Philip, we need your support, a bit of your time, and your God given talents and spirit! With your help, we hope to contact nearly 200 organizations in the next two months.

Please contact Wendy Parmelee, [email protected], or Susan Riley, [email protected], to sign up today for this worthy cause. We will get you a list of potential donors, a script, and J4J Task Force Packet.

Bless you for your time and gifts!
