Vol 19 Term: 2 Week 5
26 May 2017
Dear Parents, Students, Staff and Friends of the Magdalene Community,
School Transport Survey
At the time of publication of this newsletter over 100 parents/carers have responded to this survey in the past 24 hours.
Thank you for such prompt feedback; your views are important as the safe travel and transport of your daughters and sons
to the School is critical.
The rationale behind the survey was to explore ways in which we can promote safe travel and consider various access
points, pick up points and our current signposting. It was also to explore ways in which we can best liaise with Camden
Council to support us going into the future.
In a recent meeting with the Council Mr. Whicker and I were able to discuss some of the issues that our families currently
face, but we would like to be certain about our future directions. In this way any future formal requests to Council (about
how they can support us and/or advocate for us with various other State bodies), can be more meaningful.
Active Travel Grant
In line with our current queries around travel to school, students will soon be consulted about ways in which they can be
part of the conversation about safe travel. Magdalene was successful earlier this year in its application to receive $2000 to
be part of the South West Sydney Local Health District’s ‘Active Travel Pilot Initiative for Secondary Schools’. This
money will be used to promote ‘active travel’ (defined as any transport where human energy is spent to travel, including
public transport) and will be part of a larger conversation about safe transport. For students who currently walk, ride a
bike, catch buses or wish to consider any of these forms of transport, I would encourage you to look out for ways you can
be part of this dialogue.
Courtesy to fellow parents/carers and community members
We are aware that School drop off and pick up is potentially fraught with challenges. The fact that we are in an industrial
zone presents unique issues to the School community therefore we do want feedback about ways in which we might
support our parents/carers, students and staff.
That stated, common courtesy to other parents/carers is vital as is exercising patience around the School surrounds. The
arrival and dispatch of buses continues to be quite a seamless process and so we would continue to encourage students to
use buses as much as is practical. As many of you would know, from time to time the booking of illegally positioned or
parked cars around the various access roads occurs and so we would hope our parents/carers are fine role models for our
students.

PRAYER:
The news from Manchester earlier this week was truly shocking. For young people to be the targets of senseless vio-
lence is appalling and so we keep all of those families and those impacted by the events in our prayers.
May God grant strength and enduring faith to all who are bereaved, injured and traumatised.
May those victims who perished in the bombing be granted a merciful judgement by God. May they rest in
peace and be welcomed into His Loving Presence.
May their families and friends receive the peace only You, Lord Jesus, can give. May they find Your consol-
ing love among the acts of kindness and compassion offered them by their families and friends.
Grant to the survivors the grace to persevere and the grace to forgive those responsible for the attack.
Grant to the injured healing of mind and body.
May God turn the hearts of all who commit evil to a true understanding of His desire and intention for hu-
manity.
We ask this in Jesus’ name. Amen
Parents & Friends (P & F) Update
I thank all parents and/or community members who attended our last P & F meeting. There continues to be great sup-
port from our P & F and I offer my thanks to them and to those who are in key roles in this body.
Magdalene is now 19 Years old (or young – depending on your perspective) and what a great time it is to reflect on
who we are, what we stand for and where we are headed. In keeping with this a number of issues and items were dis-
cussed at the last Parents & Friends (P & F) meeting and so I would like to share some of these:
- Communication tools for the School
- The facilities available for the Second Hand Uniform Shop
- The quality and look of the current uniform
- Interest in the School exploring a move to becoming a College
- The Care fund for families
- Future grants and environmental initiatives.
A number of decisions were also made:
- For the P & F to part fund the 2017 Brewarrina Immersion Trip
- For the P & F to fund Air Conditioning Units in Blocks A to D.
Year 11 students attending the upcoming Brewarrina Immersion Trip, presented on the evening and argued their case
well for why this initiative should be supported. I thank them for their presentation.
Attendance at P & F meetings provides an opportunity to hear about where the School is headed, various initiatives
and to stay up-to-date. It can also be used as an excellent platform for sharing any concerns or issues of which the
School needs to be aware. I am always willing to consider feedback (of all types) because, at the end of the day, it is
the students who need to come first and we need to make their time as meaningful and as successful as is possible.

So far during the 2017 school year, Year 7 students have been participating in a program called ‘Peer Support’.
It is maintained by Year 10 students that have kindly volunteered their time. Peer Support is about Year 7
students at Magdalene having a positive and smooth transition to high school. We have been arranged into small
groups, with our peers and we take part in activities that support our social and emotional wellbeing. Some of
these activities include quizzes, games and surveys on the positive aspects of high school and how we can react
and deal with situations.
Another great thing about Peer Support is that we get to know our peers slightly better. With our Peer Support
groups, we may not be in each other’s classes or friendship groups. Positive relationships with people in our
year group may impact the way we interact, behave and even the way we learn. We also get to know our Year
10 leaders, as they have been in our shoes and can help us get through the first year of high school just as well as
they did!
Overall, I believe that Peer Support makes a positive difference on how our journey to high school life starts.
We are thankful for the work of the Year 10 students for running this program!
Bethany Hooper 7D
In the new year of 2017, I took the opportunity to become a peer support leader with some friends, it was a
privilege I assure you. Within teams, we have to become the role models of 2017’s Year 7 cohort. It’s
challenging, almost feeling like playing a teacher role. The main goal of this campaign of sorts is for the new
students to feel like they have an older friend they can trust. To do this, we have to connect to our group
members and make an experience that hopefully they can enjoy and
remember. Myself and the other leaders in my group try to make every
lesson as fun as it possibly be. I would say that my group has connected to
each other and hopefully helped to make friends through their transition
into high school. The best experience that I have got out of this is the fun
joyful atmosphere that I’ve seen within the group. With it coming to an
end, I would say that every lesson has been fun, educational, and
connected.
Hayden Johnstone 10M
During Peer support last week I had the opportunity to observe the lovely
Year 10 students guiding our Year 7 Students through a peer support
lesson. I have never been so proud of our Magdalene students and the
maturity they showed in regards to their involvement in the program. I
found it refreshing to see Year 7 students feeling comfortable enough to
express their thoughts and feelings with their Year 10 leaders. It made for
an authentic experience allowing the Year 7 students to gain social skills
and pastoral awareness, whilst enjoying themselves and having fun. I look
forward to observing some more peer support programs throughout the
remainder of the year.
