MEMORIAL DRIVE BAPTIST CHURCH
DECEMBER 2014
“And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them; and they were so afraid. And the angel said unto them, ‘Fear not: for behold, I bring unto you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the City of David a Savior, which is Christ the Lord. And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger . ’ And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host, praising G o d , a n d saying “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, g o o d w i l l toward men.”

PICTURES OF CHURCH
This week I attended a memorial service for the daughter of a community leader. I sat in a sanctuary filled beyond capacity with young and not so young. She was 22 years old and many of her friends attended. Her parents are slightly younger than me so their friends were there as well. The day before the service, her grandfather and sister were in attendance at our service. I’d never met them until that day. I expressed my sympathy in their loss telling them I would attend the memorial service. Being a parent and a grand-parent I could not imagine the deep sense of loss and what must seem like being lost in a fog of emotion. I asked myself, “How does one go through this experience, especially if one does not have a community of faith?” (I have been told the parents attend church in the area.)
Reading through the New Testament, I am struck by the metaphors used to describe the church. One well-known metaphor is the Body of Christ, another is a family or a community because we are called bothers and sisters. If the church is a family, you stick with it, work it out, stay in it. The church becomes more than what you get; it is what you give. Today, most people do not see the church as a communal family. The picture today is of a store (the church) and consumers (the individual). If a church is a retail outlet, it is no more than, where can I get the most bang for my buck? “Who has the best Black Friday deals?” or “Where is it most convenient?”. That leads me to ask you: How do you see the church? What are you doing to make it more like family?

Student Leadership
Memorial Drive Baptist Church students, we are looking to you for leadership in our new children’s ministry, Upwards. There is plenty of opportunity to volunteer your time on Sunday mornings to help lead, teach and mentor our children. You can make a huge impact! Please see Ryan or Lea Beasley for more details on how you can serve.
WORSHIP & STUDENTS
Volunteers Needed Volunteers are needed for the reception after the Christmas Program on Sunday, December 14. We currently have 2 people but ideally would like 5 or more. If you can help, please contact Ryan Beasley.
Christmas Party On Friday, December 12 from 7:00 - 9:00 p.m. there will be a Christmas Party for the students with a white elephant gift exchange. Ryan Beasley will be sending out more information soon.
White Elephant Gift Exchange Rules: Please keep the gifts to a $10 maximum. Each person brings one wrapped present Everyone gets a number. The person with the number 1 chooses a present to
unwrap. The person with the number 2 has a choice: they
can choose a new present OR “steal” the present from the first person.
If they “steal” the present from the first person, that person chooses a new present.
The game continues until all presents have been unwrapped.
