HEPHAESTUS is the Greek name for the Roman god of the forge, Vulcan. Birmingham has the world’s largest iron statue, that of the Roman god, Vulcan. We named our Starfleet chapter the Hephaestus to give us ties to our city and to Star Trek, which has had its own Vulcan since 1966. Hephaestus forged armor and weapons for the gods. We create our own “armor and weapons” here, in our newsletter, so it is called The Anvil.

From the Ready Room

Greeting from your Captain, This month the Anvil is devoted to the series Enterprise. This is the final of the five series thus far

produced in the Star Trek saga. I hope these articles this past year have been interesting for you to read. I am still involved in a class devoted to Star Trek (www.trekclass.com). It has brought out several

interesting facts that may not have been known but also some facts that made me think of why I loved Star Trek. I plan to give a complete review in the January 2016 issue of the Anvil as the class will not be finished in time for the December issue.

Remember this month that General Jill Rayburn, SFMC has given a challenge to the person who finishes the most academy course in November would win a special prize from her. Good luck to you folks

If you have read a book, seen a movie, played a game or went to a convention that you liked then please write a review and send it to me. I’ll be glad to include it in The Anvil. Your fellow crewmates would love to know what you think. See you around the ship… Capt. MarkAdam Miller [email protected] https://www.facebook.com/groups/Hephaestus2004/ XO Briefing

Hello crew,

This is the month for a vote of confidence for Captain MarkAdam Miller and First Officer Phillip Mangina Jr. Please email me your vote. My email is [email protected].

This is the month dedicated to Enterprise. Enterprise takes us to a time before Kirk, a time before the prime directive was in place. Enterprise started off as what space exploration would have been like if we started off today using today’s tech. The series started off very slow and boring then it started getting interesting. Maybe it could have used a younger captain. What would it be if season three started the earth-Romulan war instead of the Xindi war. U

Ship’s Log October 10, 2015 – Social Night We had a good social this evening. The First Officer Phillip brought Avengers: Age of Ultron to watch. We discussed that and future/upcoming Marvel movies. Diedra Robinson talked about going to London next month to see Benedict Cumberbatch in the play Hamlet. I will need to get a report from her for the December Anvil on how it went. We had an assortment of cookies, chips and pop to snack on while we discussed #TrekClass. Several were interested and may attend. Attendance: 11 People October 3,10,17,24, 2015- #TrekClass Saturday several of us met at the Pelham Public Library to discuss the on-line Star Trek course. We had a very good turnout, the different episodes discussed brought up many interesting points. This course is presented by Professor Antony Rotolo of Syracuse University. You can join at www.trekclass.com. We plan to meet each Saturday at 10:30 to discuss that week’s class (mission). Prof Rotolo also has discussions on twitter using #TrekClass and on Google+ using TrekClass. The Google+ discussion is a private group so you have to ask the professor to join. Attendance: 2-7 People depending on the week October 31, 2015 –Halloween ComicFest at Kingdom Comics Several members turned out for the Halloween ComicFest at Kingdom Comics. There was candy, free Halloween Comics and prizes for best costumes. Some members were able to pick up some great items at a great discount. Fun was had by all. Attendance: 4 crewmen Personnel Updates: Both James Davis and Nicole Bentley passed OCC with Honors. Congratulations James and Nicole!

(If you have any news or accomplishments you would like to share with the group please email them to me at: [email protected]. Also your personal updates can give your Captain added info to help get you

recognition and awards at Summit for your accomplishments).

Reed: It can't be ethical to cause a patient this much pain. Phlox: It's unethical to harm a patient; I can inflict as much pain as I like.

Starfleet Marine Corps Greetings,

The 654th MSG is looking for members. There is a completely different set of Academy schools for those trying to get the Boothby awards. There is no pressure in joining. There are two categories: Active which means all ranks will be Marine ranks, and Reserve which means you stay primarily Fleet and only use Marine ranks when doing marine stuff. Contact Lt. General Neil Yawn ([email protected]), if you are interested or have questions.

Looking to boost your Boothby Awards? The Starfleet Marines Academy may be your answer. Check out what SFMC Academy has for you.

Theme Article: Star Trek: Enterprise

By: Captain MarkAdam Miller When I first hear about Paramount making a show that predated Star Trek (TOS) I thought that it would not

be that great; as it would make the original show look dated in comparison. When I started watching it I let my thoughts look at the show as a whole and that the differences that showed up is because of the tampering in time by the Borg and the Enterprise (NCC-1701D) going back in time in the movie Star Trek: First Contact. They used the first contact between Zefram Cochrane and the Vulcans as a jumping off point. But since having James Cromwell who played Zefram Cochrane would be cost prohibitive they moved to a time when Zefram Cochrane had passed away.

The show was called Enterprise at first because they felt the name was recognizable enough that they didn’t have to use Star Trek to promote it. It is true that Enterprise and Star Trek are synonymous but it still makes one wonder if the producers were trying to distance themselves from the Star Trek name to appeal to a wider audience. Star Trek was considered a geek property and the producers could have thought that maybe the non-geeks might tune into a program that didn’t have a Star Trek name. When the show began to fail, they did bring back the Star Trek name in the 3rd and 4th season. This, I believe, was to encourage the Star Trek fans to come back which was not needed as fan were still there. U

Enterprise is looking at the time when United Earth was just beginning to explore the galaxy. The Federation had not been established. United Earth had designed a ship that was capable of warp 5 through its space exploration group Starfleet. The faster ships meant that they could go farther out but still not have to be away from earth for long periods of time. It is ironic that we have a circular reference: the new warp 5 ship is called Enterprise because it is tradition that the first ship of a class (the first space shuttle for example) is called Enterprise and the first space shuttle (in real life) was called Enterprise because of Star Trek.

Many of the objects and terms we fine in TOS are shown to be developing here. The communicators are flip models but are smaller than the ones in TOS. The transporter has the levers to beam up and down. The phasers that we know are still in development and are called phase pistols instead of phasers. The term Red Alert has not been developed: they are using tactical alert to describe the red alert condition. The current torpedoes later become photon torpedoes. Shields haven’t been developed: they use a polarized hull plating to take care of running through debris in space. The polarized hull plating also helps when hit by an energy weapon but they do not work as well as the shields in TOS.

There were two parts of developing technology shown that I thought interesting. The first is how Dr. Phlox treats patients. The good Doctor has a whole zoo of creatures he uses to help cure illnesses and injuries. It harkens back to leeches to pull bad blood out of a person. There is a diagnostic bed like in the original series but the person has to go in to a tube to have the diagnostics done. The other development is the universal translator. Ensign Sato is instrumental in developing this technology because of her talent in being a human translator. She can listen to a person for just a few minutes and then be able to talk to them in their own language. This is based on the fact that on Earth there is a finite number of languages you need to know that once you have them down then all the other languages are just a variation of a root language. The problem with this is that people who grew up on another planet may have different sounds that we cannot make because of

Page 8: Anvil November 2015

The Anvil nCC-2004

uss hephAesTus 6 AlWAys OnWArd

our anatomy. Because of these anatomic differences the language would be different (See TNG: Darmok, S5E2). Still the universal translator episodes are good in showing the difficulties of understanding each other.

The crew structure is similar in that the same departments are represented (engineering, security, communication, science office, Doctor and captain). But the difference is that in the other series they had an out sider Spock (TOS), Data (TNG), Odo (DS9) and EMH (Voyager) that would comment on the human condition. All of these outsiders did it from a logical perspective. Enterprise takes it one step further, not only do they have the logical perspective (T’Pol) but an emotional one as well (Dr. Phlox). This other perspective gives a look on how feelings affect how we do things. Many times in TOS Kirk or McCoy criticized Spock for not displaying any feelings in the situation. In Enterprise we do get a sympathetic ear to the problems we face and that gives us guidance in how to use our feelings to solve problems.

Enterprise has hit and miss episodes. Personally the misses were more because of the writers having a background theme (temporal cold war, Xindi conflict, T’Pol’s emotional problems, etc.) that had to be placed in every episode. It is nice to have some background stuff going on which makes the characters look like they actually have a life. This was not done in TOS because when it was made the-powers-that-be believed that most people would only see an episode once or twice then never see it again. They believed that if someone missed an episode they would not understand what was going on. Today with DVDs and DVRs people can view all the episodes so they can follow these background arcs and know what is going on. The problem is that the Enterprise writers used it too much and it was frustrating because you felt they were never resolving some of the plots.

The best episodes of Enterprise were in the final season. This is what Enterprise should have been about: how the Federation was created, the formation of the Prime directive, meeting other races (Andorans, Tellerites, Klingons, etc.) that make up the Federation. They touched on this in the final season which made it the best one. If Paramount had gone this way in the first season, then Enterprise would have gone seven seasons. Since they did not, Enterprise was cut short and Star Trek as a TV series is in jeopardy.

I like a lot of the characters and enjoy watching the program. I personally feel that those who controlled the writing of Enterprise did not understand what it had to offer everyone and so they didn’t give it the respect that it deserved. If they had given it proper respect, then we would still have some form of Star Trek on TV.

Zefram Cochrane: On this site, a powerful engine will be built... an engine that will someday let us travel a hundred times faster than we can today. Imagine it. Thousands of inhabited planets at our

fingertips. And we'll be able to explore those strange new worlds... and seek out new life and new

civilizations. This engine will let us go boldly... where no man has gone before.

Star Trek News & More James T. Kirk has Problems at Heathrow

Alex Salmond, first minister of Scotland, was stopped when he tried to board his plane at Heathrow. The problem was he uses the name James T. Kirk when he travels for safety reasons. Heathrow balked at the name as it didn’t match his passport. Alex Salmond, a Star Trek fan, normally flies out of Gatwick or London City where those airports are more familiar with his flight arrangements. Salmond, after he made his flight, said, “It was all sorted out, I just wanted BA (British Airways) to beam me up Scotty.”

William Shatner, the real James T. Kirk, learned of the incident through his twitter fanbase. He tweeted “I seem to be really popular in Scotland these days. Don’t understand it but I’ll take it!” He then twitted Salmon saying, “There are easier ways to ask for an autograph!” Salmond twitted back, “But who is who? #SetPhasersToFun.” Included with the tweet was a photo-shopped pic of Salmon as Kirk and Shatner as Salmon. Never Fear, Riley is looking after us from the Stars It is with sadness I report the passing of Bruce Hyde. The actor is known to Star Trek as Lt. Kevin Riley.

Lt. Riley was in the episodes Naked Time and The Conscience of the King. Most probably remember him singing “I’ll Take You Home Again, Kathleen” from the Episode Naked Time. He only acted for six or seven years. Those years included work on Dr. Kildare and The Beverly Hillbillies. His acting career also led him to Broadway where he worked in Canterbury Tales and Hair amongst others. For more than 25 years he was a professor of communication at St. Cloud State University in St. Cloud, Minnesota. Our sympathies to the family, friends, students and fans of Mr. Hyde. (www.startrek.com) The 67th Emmy Awards In Memoriam

The 67th Emmy Awards paid tribute to the actors, directors, writers, and producers who passed away this past year in a montage call In Memoriam. In the montage Herve Bennete was shown on the set of Star Trek: Wrath of Khan. The clip was wrapped up with Leonard Nimoy in TOS uniform giving the Vulcan Salute and saying “Live long and Prosper.” (www.treknews.net) Star Trek back on TV(somewhat)

Star Trek is coming back to TV, sort of. CBS has plans to create a new Star Trek series for its Netflix-like web site CBS All Access. The pilot of the series will air on CBS Television but to view the rest of the series you will need to subscribe to their website. The subscription is $5.99 but you will have to put up with commercials while watching the show. If you like, you can watch all of the Star Trek Series on CBS All Access at this time. CBS is creating this new series because of the number of people watching original series on the website now.

The series is being developed by Alex Kurtzman. Mr. Kurtzman is known to Star Trek fans as the co-writer of Star Trek (2009) and Star Trek: Into Darkness (2013). He is better known for Fringe, Hercules: The Legendary Journeys and Sleepy Hallow. U

On a personal note, I am glad I am getting more Star Trek as a series because I think it is better as a series than it is as movies. I am not pleased that I am having to subscribe to another Netflix-like service to watch it. Again, Paramount and CBS are relegating us Star Trek fans to the kids table and making us pay for the it. (treknews.net) Howard A. Anderson Jr. (1920-1915) It is with great sadness to report the passing of Howard A. Anderson Jr. He was the special effects artist that gave Star Trek (TOS) the transporter beaming effect, the phaser beams and the Enterprise warping through space. Mr Anderson worked on Star Trek as part of his contract with Desilu Productions. He was part of The Howard Anderson Comapany which was founded by his father. Mr. Anderson and his brother Darrell A. Anderson had setup their base of operation on the Desilu lot after Howard helped Desi Arnaz with the title sequence on the I Love Lucy show. Being part of the lot, the special effects for Desilu’s new product, Star Trek fell to him. Our condolences to his family, friends, colleges and fans in the loss of this talented man. (treknews.net)

Star Trek Fiction Star Trek: The New Adventures – Tick Tock

By: Ensign 3rd Class Donald Arnold Bill wanted to see himself as a scientist. He activated

the stone, but, it refused to work. He felt himself being pulled towards… He couldn’t see what. He felt as if he was falling. Everything went black. When he awoke, he heard water crashing about. His eyes slowly opened to see wooden walls, ceiling and floor. No one was around him but he saw a window. No, a porthole. He looked out and saw only the sea.

His head was reeling and he wondered how he had reached this place. His staff was leaning against the wall. He grabbed it and willed it to give him appropriate clothing. A sabre appeared at his side and what seemed to be the attire of a pirate took the place of his uniform.

There was a chest on a table. A faint orange light glowed from inside. Bill tried to open it to no avail. He headed up a set of stairs, seeing sunlight peeking through the cracks of a door at the top, to find a key to the chest.

It took only a few seconds for him to be spotted and have more than seven sabre blades at his throat. The captain of the band stepped forth. Rings adorned his fingers, necklaces hung about his throat, and he was armed to the teeth. He was called Richard “The Brutal”.

He looked at Bill and scoffed, “Who are ye, stowaway?” Bill thought for a moment and said, “I am Captain William Tiberius Kirk of the sailing ship Enterprise.” Richard laughed and said, “Enterprise? Is that some royal tea ship? Ha! I doubt ye even know how to wield that sabre on ‘yer hip.”

Bill pushed back the pirate band and stood nearly nose to nose with the disrespectful man. He answered, “Shall we duel? If I win, I get the key so I can have whatever is in that chest in the hold and I go anywhere I please. If you win, you get to add me to your kill total.”

Richard smiled and said, “I’ll gladly add another name to my body count. Ye have five minutes to make arrangements with whatever deity ye believe in.” Bill nodded. Minutes passed like seconds. The Captain had persuaded his men to ambush Bill. Then the fight broke out: metal hitting metal. Bill was taking out pirates left

and right. They fell: some unconscious, some overboard, and one or two merely dropped their weapons and ran.

Bill finally met the Captain with an extra sabre he had taken from one of his attackers. Richard snarled and lunged at Bill, swords splitting the very air around them. A deep cut met Bill’s shoulder. Bill became enraged and fought the vile man up to the very edge of the ship’s bow. It was one or the other. Richard tossed aside one sword and went for his gun. He raised it and said, “Any last words, nave?” Bill answered, “Yes, En garde!” Bill took a swipe at the gun causing the pirate to fall on his back. The gun flew into the air, going off thanks to the dishonorable pirate’s itchy trigger finger. By some irony, the bullet went directly through Richard’s hand. He looked up and handed Bill the key, saying “I never met such a fierce stowaway. Go now. Take the chest and leave, Captain Kirk.”

Bill went to the hold and opened the chest. An orange gem, similar to the yellow one floated up and took its place in the gauntlet, which had reappeared after being hidden during Bill’s time on the pirate ship. He grabbed his staff and changed back to his normal self. He grabbed a couple of shining treasure pieces from the hold and activated the new gem, hoping to get home.

Stephanie was not the only one searching for Bill. As the asteroid floated on in space, the throne grew darker. The mad being thought deeply of his desire. He wanted to rule the galaxies and this… this human… was trying to steal what was rightfully his. He knew Bill had found the second stone and he was not pleased. He looked out into the stars and said, “Stark was the last human I allowed to beat me. It will not happen again. William Kirk will die and I will have my Gauntlet… Then I shall have the galaxy.”

TO BE CONTINUED…

Reviews Movies Single Santa Seeks Mrs. Claus Reviewed by: Captain MarkAdam Miller

This time a year a lot of holiday movies come on TV to watch. The bad part is that a lot of them are not worth watching. One that I like to watch at this time of year is the Hallmark movie Single Santa Seeks Mrs. Claus. It stars Jeff Guttenberg (Police Academy, Short Circuit and 3 Men and a Baby directed by Leonard Nimoy (Star Trek Reference)) and Crystal Bernard (Happy Days and Wings).

The story plot is that Santa Claus’s position is held by a family whose tradition has the eldest son take over for his father when the father reaches retirement age. Steve Guttenberg plays Nick the son of the current Santa Claus. His Dad (played by John Wheeler) is ready for retirement but the problem is that Nick is not married and there would be no Mrs. Claus to help him with the work he has to do to get ready for the Christmas. Santa Claus may be the image of Christmas but Mrs. Claus is the heart. So Nick goes off with a list of possible matches given to him by Head Elf Ernest (played by Armin Shimerman - another Star Trek reference). None on the list work out but Nick runs into Beth (Ms. Bernard). He falls in love with her and her 8 yr. old boy Jake (Dominic Scott Kay). The problem is that Beth doesn’t believe in Santa Claus. Nick has his work cut out for him to make Beth believe in him.

This may sound like a rip off of The Santa Clause 2 but it has its own charm that makes me want to see it each year. Steve Guttenberg does not have the white beard but he does wear the red suit. He has this laugh that makes “Ho Ho Ho” sound like how someone would laugh in real life, not like they are just imitating the sound. He portrays the childlike wonderment of Christmas that is lacking in most films. Armin Shimerman gives a good performance of an efficient elf who has to make sure that everything is ready for Santa when the big night comes (Dec 24). His efforts to make Nick see that he has to be down to earth and logical when finding love instead of looking for true romance make for some good comedy.

Crystal Bernard also gives a good performance as a person who doesn’t believe in Christmas because Christmas never worked out for her. The big disappointment was the loss of her father at a young age and Santa not being able to bring the father back to her at Christmas. Also the loss of her husband does not help either. She pulls off this person trying to be a good mother and going from a nonbeliever to believer very well.

The only problem I had with the movie is we do not get to hear Ms. Bernard’s beautiful singing voice. There are places she sings a few lines but I wish they had her singing more.

This film and the sequel Meet the Santas are two Christmas movies you should not miss on Hallmark at Christmas. Rating: AAAAA Did I miss something? You have an interesting movie or TV show you would like to review or be reviewed? Then send me

your suggestions and articles to [email protected].

While on an Away Mission By Captain MarkAdam Miller

(Recap) We have just crossed the Klingon border when two Romulan ships de-cloak on our port bow and a Jem’Hadar fighter on starboard bow.

I rush out of my quarters down the hall to the turbo lift. When the turbo lift doors open I see my new First Officer, Lt. Phillip Mangina, waiting for me. “What’s up, Cap?” Phillip asks as I enter the turbo lift. “Romulans and Jem’Hadar,” I reply. “Oh, boy,” is his only response.

As the bridge doors open Pete leaves the command chair and stands behind it at the navigational station. “Hail the Romulans, Commander,” I bark to Lt. Commander Brenda Miller who is at the communications console. “The Romulans are hailing us Captain. Commander Vebok on screen now.”

“Rear Admiral Peter Mohney, I’m sorry Rear Admiral Pete Mohney. I see you’re still in command of that rust bucket you call a ship.” The Romulan commander seethes. Pete looks at me and I nod giving him the go head to speak first to the commander. “It is Admiral now and I am just an observer on the ship. Let me introduce you to the Hephaestus’s new commander, Captain MarkAdam Miller. Captain Miller this is Commander Vebok.” U

I take a seat in the command chair, “Glad to meet you Commander Vebok. Unless you are an escort to the Klingon homeworld I need to ask you to state your business. We have an urgent request from Chancellor Martok. He is in need of our help and we need to be on our way.” “An urgent request,” bellows Vebok, “more like a cry for help to his lap dogs in the Federation because of his underhanded ways of trying to destroy the Romulan Empire. We have evidence from the Vorta on the Jem’Hadar ship that cloaked Klingon ships have been running experiments on the sun and moons of Romulus. We are here to stop any interference from the Federation until we have the Klingon’s admit to their treachery.”

“Commander Vebok, I personally will not stand for any treachery from Klingons, but I also do not trust the Vorta or the Jem’Hadar since we just finished a war against them and the Founders. None of us can afford a war against each other. Escort us to the Klingon homeworld and we will help you bring your grievances against the Klingons. Ambassador Burtyk is with us so he will be able to help us get to the bottom of this.”

“Admiral Mohney, do you trust this man?” Vebok questions Pete. Pete, coming to attention, speaks, “He is my Captain and I trust him with my life. I and Admiral Potts would not have turned the ship over to him unless we did. Is that sufficient for you?”

“Yes that is more than sufficient. Follow us to Kronos. Don’t try anything. The Jem’Hadar will be following and they can see through a cloaking device.” I nod saying, “No tricks. We will follow you to Kronos. Can you transmit the evidence against the Klingons to us so we can study it and have an idea what they might be up too?” Vobok looks at me then barks at his sub commander, “Give them what they need but don’t give them everything.” Looking at me, Vebok says, “Don’t get any ideas. I am only giving you enough to know that the Klingon dogs are up to something. You will not have enough to help the Klingons worm their way out of their treachery.”

“Pete, follow the Romulans but stay on yellow alert. Phillip get science, astrophysics and anybody that knows anything about moons and stars. Also get anyone that might know things about the Romulan solar system. Something is wrong and the Vorta, and possibly the Founders, are behind it…
