HEPHAESTUS is the Greek name for the Roman
god of the forge, Vulcan. Birmingham has the
world’s largest iron statue, that of the Roman god,
Vulcan. We named our Starfleet chapter the
Hephaestus to give us ties to our city and to Star
Trek, which has had its own Vulcan since 1966.
Hephaestus forged armor and weapons for the gods.
We create our own “armor and weapons” here, in
our newsletter, so it is called The Anvil.

Greeting from your Captain,
Happy New Year! I hope everyone had a nice holiday season. I had a lot of fun. I went home for
Christmas and saw most of my relatives. I also made out pretty good in the gift department. I received Firefly
Clue, and the monopoly games The Big Bang Theory and The Nightmare Before Christmas. I played the Firefly
clue with my Dad and Brenda. I won. It was fun. Only thing is that Sheppard Book is not a character you can
play. I played Walsh since he is the Purple piece. I am going to bring it to the social this week.
I am looking for suggests on what to put in for Name the Actor. This month is Name the Robot. I also hope
you are enjoying hunt the symbol. I might try and find other symbols to put in other than Star Trek so be on the
look out.
If you have a review, article or some personal achievements you would like to share with your fellow

trying to get the Boothby awards. There is no pressure in joining. There are two categories: Active which
means all ranks will be Marine ranks, and Reserve which means you stay primarily Fleet and only use Marine
ranks when doing marine stuff. Contact Lt. General Neil Yawn if you are interested or have questions.
Looking to boost your Boothby Awards? The Starfleet Marines Academy may be your answer. Check out

Joan Collins Knighted}}}}
Joan Collins has received the honor of Dame which is the female equivalent of knight. This honor was given by Queen Elizabeth II on the Queen’s Annual Honor List which was released on Tuesday December 30, 2014. Dame Collins is known to Star Trek fans as Edith Keeler in City on the Edge of Forever. She was given the honor for her work with non-profit children charities. Dame Collins said of the honor “humbling to receive this level of recognition from my queen and country, and I am thrilled and truly grateful." Congratulations Dame Collins! (www.startrek.com)

Ex-wife of Gibbs
Jeri Ryan (7 of 9 on Star Trek Voyager) appeared on NCIS Tuesday, January 6, 2015. Her character is the ex-wife no.2, Rebecca Chase, of Mark Harmon’s Special Agent Leroy Jethro Gibbs. It was good to see Ms. Ryan in a different role then her 7of 9 character. Hopefully she may appear again soon. (www.startrek.com).
Star Trek Families
Seems the Actors of Star Trek are making babies. As I reported last time Zoe Saldana (Uhura) had twins but the names had not been revealed. They are Cy and Bowie. Congratulation, again. Also Benedict Cumberbatch (Khan) and his fiancée Sophie Hunter have announced that Sophie is pregnant. The engagement was announced about two months ago. In other news Alice Eve (Carol Marcus) was married on New Years Eve. Can we expect a baby soon for this couple as well? (www.trektoday.com) (Did I miss something? Star Trek: The New Adventures: The Truth of the Matter…
By: Donald Arnold
Bill got to Vulcan quickly. Ambassador Spock had Bill,
Stephanie, and Spock beam down to a hidden meeting
room so he could speak privately with someone who had
come to Vulcan to help him. Bill and the others entered.
Bill said, “What’s going on, sir?” Ambassador Spock
didn’t speak for a moment, trying to collect his thoughts
and said, “William Tiberius Kirk meet James Tiberius
Kirk, your great-great grandfather…” Bill was shocked.
Starfleet had told him that James Kirk had died while
battling Tolian Soran.
James Kirk said, “It’s nice to meet you. I know who you
are and a great deal about you. I’ve been in hiding since I
faked my death at the hands of Soran. There were a lot of
questions that were going to be asked about me vanishing
into the Nexus. That’s why I hid. Now, I’m back because
the Federation is falling apart, quickly. Secrets and
conspiracy about me, The Creature, Sarek, and even
Kahless. The Federation is keeping a lot of things hidden
and a lot of files are being shredded. Let me tell you what
I know. The Creature was a man named Jeremiah
Livingston. He found a mine full of gems and made three
of them into a medallion, a staff, and a ring. He also wove
a cloak from some material he found there. It turned him
into The Creature. Ambassador Sarek was murdered but
there is a person who has his katra. We need his body.
Kahless is in the underground here on Vulcan. The current
Federation President is planning to attack Qo’nos, full
scale. He wants to start a war there, Cardassia, and
Andoria. When night falls, we’ll go to my lab and start
planning to get into that vault and get the old files that
haven’t been shredded.”
The night came quickly. Jim waited as they entered the
lab. He had blueprints that would get them in. After
plenty of briefing, they pulled it off and returned to Jim’s
lab. They were going through the files when they found
the lab’s coordinates on one.
They began reading: “Kirk, James Tiberius has been
reported to have been sighted on Vulcan. This is believed
to be his hideout. He is wanted for numerous things
surrounding his falsified demise. Plans have been made to
find him…” The place went up in a bright light and Bill
was thrown against the wall. Jim, Spock, Data, and
Stephanie grabbed him and beamed up. When in sickbay,
Bill awoke. He had broken both ankles but he healed them
with his powers. The UFP had done it and Bill and the
others still had the files. They were going to find all of
these projects:
1. The Creature Incident
2. Kahless the Unforgettable In Hiding
3. Owner of Katra of Sarek
4. James Kirk Truth
5. Operation: Starships Rain
The last file detailed the Federation President’s plans.
The ship warped out. Bill asked why and Jim handed him
a PADD. Bill, Stephanie, Ambassador Spock, James Kirk,
Spock III, and Data B. Soong were wanted for “treason”.
Treason was the word the UFP President was going to face
when Bill got his own named cleared and the UFP
President’s exposed as the man trying to create war. He
had been the one who hired Dukan for everything, forged
the Sword papers Dukan used, and even attacked Martok
and killed Shrun with Gul Dukan’s help. Bill and friends
were headed to Planet Justice to retrieve Jeremiah
Livingston. He was a Starfleet officer, apparently.
TO BE CONTINUED…

Reviews The Hobbit Movie (ONE Day...THREE Movies...Nearly NINE Hours) by: Shirley A. Burton
(Spoiler Alert – May be spoilers in the article)
On December 15, 2014, I did something I never thought I'd be crazy enough to try. The Carmike Chantilly 13 theater
(just having opened in August) was the home to not one, not two, but all three Hobbit movies: An Unexpected Journey,
The Desolation of Smaug, and The Battle of the Five Armies. Since I hadn't even thought about watching the first two
when they each came out, I took advantage of this opportunity to watch all three in a single day. I ordered the ticket online
and went to the Chantilly 13 with some of my own snacks to keep me from having to buy anything at the concession
stand. I walked into theater #5 at around 12:35pm, having to be ready for a long but hopefully entertaining afternoon.
I did suffer one slight drawback at first. I found out the three movies were going to be shown in 3-D, which created a
major problem for me. The last time I watched a 3-D movie was James Cameron's Avatar, and I ended up with "AIN" or
"Avatar-Induced Nausea." However, one of my friends came to the rescue when he took one of the lenses on the 3-D
glasses and basically inverted it. As a result, I was able to enjoy the movie without the possibility of getting sick. Now,
considering I don't have a lot of space to work with, I'll do a one paragraph review of each one.
First, An Unexpected Journey. I had a great time watching a younger Bilbo Baggins go from ordinary Hobbit in the
Shire to being a part of one incredible journey to help a Dwarf named Thorin Oakenshield take back his rightful throne at
the bottom of a mountain. I couldn't help but laugh when the Dwarves basically came in and ate him out of house and
home. After Bilbo decides to join the crew, it's a non-stop ride just to get back to that kingdom, especially going through
some harsh weather conditions and being almost taken out by Orcs and captured by one set of Elves. This is also where
Bilbo finds that dreaded "One Ring" and takes it from that troublemaker Gollum. For me, this was a great intro into the
trilogy, and I couldn't wait to watch the next movie.
Next, The Desolation of Smaug. After around a 20-minute break between movies, I got myself into the second movie
as Thorin, Bilbo, and the team of Dwarves (without Gandalf who went off on his own mission) continued the journey
towards that kingdom. This time, though, they get captured not only by a second set of Elves, but also the governor of
Laketown (who's a serious...jerk himself). The team finally makes it to the mountain but have trouble getting into their
home. Bilbo figures out the last light of autumn wasn't sunlight but moonlight. I also remembered about the
Oakenshields' coveted Arkenstone, where Bilbo was asked to distract Smaug in hopes of finding that stone. (The strange
thing was watching Smaug and Bilbo but listening to Sherlock and Watson from the BBC series Sherlock.) Just when
Bilbo thinks he's got the stone, Smaug gives him a run for the money and then breaks out of the kingdom to attack the
nearby Laketown. That was the lead in for the final movie.
Finally, The Battle of the Five Armies. After another break and a personal introduction to the last movie by director
Peter Jackson himself, I jumped into the final of the three movies, where Smaug had continued his assault on Laketown.
Fortunately, a man in Laketown took a chance by firing a special arrow right at Smaug, and he succeeds in slaying the
fire-breathing dragon. As for Thorin, let's just say greed really got to him and made his friends look for the Arkenstone.
He had no idea Bilbo had the stone and tried to negotiate a deal with Laketown and the Elves to give the Laketown
residents shelter at that mountain kingdom. Thorin got too greedy, and the Elves were about to attack, until the Orcs came
from the northern end to attack everyone. After some serious thinking, Thorin finally came to his senses and decided to
ask his fellow Dwarves to go into battle to stop the Orcs once and for all. Sadly, Thorin died defending his home, but he
died a hero. As for Bilbo, he finally returned to the Shire...where he found his belongings being auctioned off.
Overall, I had a fantastic time with all three movies, and being able to see them all in just under nine hours made it
one of the most fun things I've done in a long time. Don't expect me to do this again anytime soon, since I've got my own
journey to undertake: Going back to school for an Information Technology degree.
