The Orthodox Church in the Arab World (700-1700):

An Anthology of Sources

Samuel Noble and Alexander Treiger

Although many Orthodox Christians in North America are familiar with Arabic-speaking

Orthodox Christianity, very few people outside the narrow circle of scholars would beable to name even a single author or work from the Orthodox heritage in Arabic. Many

essential texts remain unedited, untranslated, and unknown, while other texts which have been edited in Arabic remain inaccessible to English readers. This Anthology aims to

rectify this situation by making accessible, in English, representative selections fromtwelve major Orthodox Christian authors and works, many of them previously

unpublished, written (with one exception) in Arabic during the millennium from 700 to

1700.

The Anthology includes twelve chapters, representing major genres of Orthodox

Christian literature in Arabic: theology, hagiography, church history, religious polemic,

devotional poetry, and spiritual literature. Each chapter includes a brief introduction, contextualizing the work and its author in their historical setting, followed by an

annotated translation of selected passages from the work. The Introduction provides an

overview of the history of Orthodox Christianity among the Arabs.

It is the editors’ hope that the Anthology will stimulate interest in Arab Christianity, afascinating and culturally important, but long-neglected chapter in the history of the

Church. As the texts assembled in this Anthology show, the unique witness of theOrthodox Church in the Arab lands holds important lessons for us today. These texts

enrich our understanding of Orthodox Christianity and will be especially appealing to

Arab Orthodox Christians, living in the West. It will also provide a more balanced understanding of the multicultural and multi-religious society of the Arab Middle East, of

which Orthodox Christianity has always been an integral part.
