MESSAGE FROM ABI FOUNDATION BOARD CHAIR

ABI Foundation Friends and Partners,

2018 has been a positive and eventful year for the ABI Foundation. Our program participants expanded

their understanding of our state’s challenges and opportunities, found inspiration through unique

experience and ideas, and developed a new sense of what it means to be a leader. We have continued

to expand our valued network of volunteers, partners and supporters whose contributions are vital to

the growth of our programs. It is thanks to their support that we are able to continue developing Iowa’s

future workforce and encouraging our youth and adult leaders to stay and thrive in our great state.

This year also brought about change for the ABI Foundation team. Kay Neumann-Thomas transitioned

into semi-retirement after 20 years of faithful service to the ABI Foundation. Kay has touched many

lives, and her efforts and commitment have built the programs into what they are today. Kay remains

a part-time member of the Foundation team focused on engaging our program alumni network.

I look forward to the coming year under the leadership of our new Foundation Vice President, Becky

Coady, along with Jessi Steward as the Director of Programs, McKenzie Kielman as Marketing and

Engagement Coordinator, and Administrative Assistant Jane Galloway. This dynamic team will

undoubtedly continue to move the programs forward and make a profound difference in the lives of

high school students, young adults, early professionals, and mature leaders from all corners of Iowa.

Together, we celebrate another successful year of the ABI Foundation’s Leadership Iowa, Leadership

Iowa University and Business Horizons programs, our Elevate Advanced Manufacturing initiative making

waves across the state, and our continued partnership with Young Professionals of Iowa, who work to

connect and inspire young professionals throughout Iowa. My thanks to all who have been a part of the

ABI Foundation in 2017-18.

Sincerely,

William C. BrownABI Foundation Chair

"On behalf of the ABI Foundation, I would like to extend my sincere gratitude to all who contributed to the success of the 2017-18 programs. Due to your support, 125+ individuals had life-changing experiences through Business Horizons, Leadership Iowa University and Leadership Iowa last year. Just over 400 volunteers helped to impact the lives of participants during their time in the programs. More than $21,000 was raised to provide direct financial assistance to participants so they could attend our programs at a low or no cost to them. We could not provide these exceptional opportunities to students and adults across the state each year without the incredible assistance and support of hundreds of volunteers and sponsors. I encourage you to continue on this journey with us through the 2018-19 year as we work together to truly make a positive difference in the lives of all Iowans.”

2017-18 BOARD OF DIRECTORS

Thank you for your interest in the programs and activities of the ABI Foundation. The 2017-18 Annual Report documents the operations and metrics that led to another year of success and life-changing experiences for all who enjoyed this year’s programs.

It was almost 40 years ago that the Iowa Association of Business and Industry (ABI) created the ABI Foundation. That action was deliberate, purposeful, and done with one goal in mind: to add to the positive growth of our state and its people. All Iowans, not just ABI members, are able to benefit from the ABI Foundation programs.

During the past year, thanks to the ABI Foundation, young people can envision a successful future here in Iowa. Women and men across our state have decided to run for office or take on active leadership roles to help effect positive change. Communities and organizations have found resources to help them grow. ABI is proud of the ABI Foundation and the numerous ways it has aided in enriching the lives of individuals, companies and communities across our state.

Now, thanks to your support and that of countless others, the ABI Foundation continues to serve Iowa. We appreciate your valued partnership as we continue this essential work.

Mike Ralston

President, ABI Foundation

OBJECTIVE: Business Horizons is a weeklong summer program that allows Iowa high school students the

chance to work together and build upon leadership and future-ready skills needed to be successful in

today’s workplace. The program promotes the value of teamwork, Iowa opportunities and the creative

entrepreneurial spirit through unique hands-on learning and real-world experience.

PARTICIPANTS: Iowa high school students in grades 9-12

OVERVIEW OF 2018 PROGRAM:

Business Horizons 2018 hosted 63 students representing 39 high schools for a great week July 15-19 at Central

College in Pella. Student teams this year were not short of creativity, using junk and duct tape to construct

prototypes of products that would shorten commute times, allow for healthy eating on bike trips and more.

Participants took notes from Iowa professionals on topics such as project management, presentation skills,

and financial literacy. They visited local companies, competed in a business simulation and gained advice from

Iowa entrepreneurs that aided in their progress toward their final competitions – an investor presentation,

an infomercial showing and a trade show. New in 2018: in addition to the successful Media Track by the Iowa Newspaper Foundation, Business Horizons launched a Technology Track for students interested in web

development/design, IT careers and tech start-ups. The program also hosted an “Educator Day” that afforded

a group of Iowa educators the opportunity to experience the program on its final day and interact with

student participants.

SUPPORTERTESTIMONIAL“I have been connected with Business Horizons both personally and professionally. Personally, two of my sons have been participants in the program. Professionally, I helped to build the partnership between the ABI Foundation and Nationwide where we’ve led Diversity & Inclusion workshops the past two years. I applaud the ABI Foundation for incorporating D&I into the Business Horizons curriculum. It teaches our Iowa youth important skills about recognizing, accepting, and respecting each other’s differences. My colleagues and I are thankful for the opportunity to support the development of our future business leaders in a unique and valuable way.”

Bridget Cravens-Neely, Business Consultant, Risk Management, Agribusiness, Nationwide Insurance

“Business Horizons is an amazing opportunity for students to learn the depth and reach of business in Iowa. The students learn from industry leaders and have a first-rate opportunity to explore their interests. The volunteers and mentors in the pro-gram make this a priority for their summers each year because they also realize the impact of the Business Horizons experience.“

OVERVIEW OF 2018 PROGRAM:

Leadership Iowa University (LIU) 2018 served as a capstone experience to a fantastic summer for the 20

college student-leaders who took part in the program August 5-9 in Des Moines. Representing eight colleges

across the state, the group traveled together to explore and experience the many opportunities Iowa has

to offer in areas such as government, non-profit, global manufacturing financial services, agriculture,

entrepreneurship, business and more. The students learned about their personal strengths, prepared for

the next step in their job search, and vastly expanded their networks after crossing paths with more than

100 Iowa professionals throughout their week. Students also had the opportunity to attend the

Young Professionals of Iowa Conference in September and take part in the LIU mentorship program.

While I was aware of some opportunities, never had I seen so many businesses located right in Iowa. Having the chance to network with entrepreneurs and my fellow classmates has been a valuable commodity. Furthermore, I came to garner an understanding of who I was as a leader and how I can apply what I have learned into my engineering career. I am privileged to have participated in this absolutely amazing adventure.”

Five of our interns have experienced LIU and all were extremely grateful for the opportunity and were amazed at the quality and quantity of experience and education they gained over a variety of industries in such a short amount of time. Their outlook on what Iowa has to offer was definitely different after participating in LIU. Miles Capital appreciates Iowa ABI Foundation’s dedication to students through the LIU program.”

Amy Mitchell, Director, Public Fund Services & Administration

“2018 continued to be an exciting acceleration in the development of the Leadership Iowa Universi-ty program. LIU continues to provide direct access to Iowa professionals and exceptional opportuni-ties available to young people in our state. Though our exit interview statistics are striking, I would like to point out the marked shift in students who, af-ter participating in our program, are more likely to consider Iowa as a long term home. I think the investment that we continue to make in this pro-gram will prove to have a lasting positive impact on business and industry in our state. 2019 looks to be another growth year for us, and we are excit-ed to get to work on next year’s program!”
