A.1.2 Section Highlights A.1.2.1 IEEE Malaysia Section again successfully carried out a lot of activities ranging from

conferences and technical talks to social events. An increase in the number of members indicates positive development in our effort to attract electrical engineering professionals to IEEE. The section has also conducted two workshops to assist members to elevate to Senior Member grade. As a result, the number of senior member has increased from 143 in 2011 to 180 in 2012.

Another major event this year was Leadership Training Camp to provide the Chapter Chairs comprehensive information to run the chapters.

The bulk of financial resources were spent on supporting Chapter activities through grants and technical related activities. 2012 has also observed the formation of a new Chapter, Geoscience and Remote Sensing.

B.1.1: The objectives of the Membership Development Committee (MDC) of IEEE Malaysia are as follows:

In general, the number of IEEE Malaysia active members in 2012 increased by 17% compared to 2011 as shown in Figure 1. This is contributed from increases in the number of active members in all grades (except Affiliate, Associate, Student and Life Member) as depicted in Figure 2. B.1.4: Social Meetings and Membership Drives were carried out by Chapters at various

institutions/organizations through various ways such as promoting IEEE Membership during conferences and workshops amongst others. As a result, the number of IEEE members in Malaysia has increased for 2012. In addition, Malaysia Section continues its effort to increase the number of Senior Member by organizing two Senior Member Elevation workshops. In the workshop, assistance on the online application and list of references was given to eligible members. This initiative was effective with 26% increases in Senior Membership elevation for 2012.

B.2 Chapter Activities

B.2.1: There are four joint chapters, fifteen chapters, and two affinity groups under IEEE Malaysia Section. The technical chapter and affinity group chairs are as shown in Appendix.

B.2.2: A new chapter Geoscience and Remote Sensing was formed in late 2012.

B.2.3: Most of the chapters were active and the less active chapters have been supervised by Membership /Chapter Development portfolio.

B.3 Professional and Continuing Education Activities

B.3.1 Professional Activities /Industrial Relation

B.3.1.1 Freescale Cup 2012 was organized by Freescale Semiconductor (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd and supported by IEEE Malaysia Section. This year it was held in UiTM as the host on the 1st December 2012. A total of 32 teams from 20 public and private universities participated in the competition.

B.3.2 Educational Activities

B.3.2.1 Leadership Camp with the purpose of providing training and sharing experiences with new chapter chairs, secretaries and treasurers on the running of Chapters. This was held on the 24th March 2012 at Hotel Impian, Morib. This activity was aimed to enhance leadership amongst the Malaysian Chapters. The speakers were Mahamod Ismail, Zaiki Awang, Mustafar Kamal Hamzah, Zuhaina Zakaria and Suhaila Subahir.

B.3.2.2 IEEE Malaysia Section co-organized a talk titled “The Process of Outcome-Based Education: Implementation, Assessment and Outcomes” with the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, UiTM on the 8th June 2012. The speaker was Prof Muhammad H.Rashid from University of West Florida.

B.3.2.3 A workshop on Senior Member Elevation was held in UKM on the 14th July 2012. 62 IEEE members attended this workshop. On the 12th November 2012, a similar workshop was organized in UniMAP.

B.3.2.4 IEEE Malaysia Section also supported Region 10 in organizing South East Asia (SEA) Conference Organisers Leadership Workshop which was held on the 20th - 21st October in Kuala Lumpur. About 50 participants representing the SEA IEEE Sections attended the workshop.

B.4 Students Activities

B.4.2: There was no new student branch formed in 2012. Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP) has shown interest to form IEEE Student Branch.

B.4.3: Student Activities

B.4.3.1 The 2012 IEEE Student Conference on Research and Development (IEEE-SCORED 2012) was sponsored by UiTM IEEE Student Branch and co-sponsored by the IEEE Malaysia Section. The conference was held at Parkroyal Hotel, Penang, Malaysia from 5th – 6th December 2012. The conference attracted more than 100 paper submissions with 60 papers accepted for presentation. The 2013 IEEE SCORED will be hosted by UKM IEEE Student Branch.

B.4.3.2 Workshop for IEEE Student Branch’s Chair and Counselors were held at Fakulti Kejuruteraan & Alam Bina UKM on 14th July 2012. The aim of the workshop is to provide information on the roles of student branch as well as sharing experiences between student branches. Representatives from seven IEEE Student Branches participated in the workshop.

B.4.4: Student Branch Activities

Each IEEE Student Branch has completed a number of activities for the year 2012. The summary of activities is listed in the Appendix.

B.5 Affinity Group Activities

B.5.1 Graduate of the Last Decade (GOLD) In 2012, IEEE Malaysia GOLD Affinity Group organized various activities which involved GOLD members and students. In general, most of the activities carried out were technical and social related activities. Prominent speakers from industry such as Intel and Emerald Systems Design Center were invited for the technical activities. The number of GOLD members, undergraduate and postgraduate students participating in this year activities have been increased compared to previous years.

Nevertheless, due to time constraints among the committee members, several 2012 activities were postponed, in particular IEEE Gold Singapore visit, and Leadership Career Development Program for IEEESB. It is hope that these activities can be carried out in 2013.

B.6 Awards & Recognition Activities

B.6.1 Award constituted by the section

The Section gave away the following awards at the IEEE Malaysia Annual Award and Appreciation Night held on 19th January 2013 at Pullman Putrajaya Lakeside.

IEEE Malaysia Section’s homepage has moved to the new domain at http://www.ieeemy.org. The Chapters, Student Branches and Affinity Groups may be reached via the link on the homepage.

PART C: OTHERS

C.1: Relationship with National Societies

The Section has good relations with national professional bodies or societies. Several conferences organized by the Section were either co-organized with these bodies or participated by their members.

C.2 Problems to be Anticipated

The decrease in student numbers needs to be addressed more aggressively by all concerned. All chapters also need to be more pro-active in attracting members by increasing their presence through organizing more high-impact activities.

PART D: GOALS AND PLANS

D.1 Continuation of Project/Activity in Progress and Their Implementation Plans

The Section will continue support all activities that already in the pipeline from the previous years. The Section will monitor so that the implementation of all activity is according to the IEEE By-laws and benefits the members. At the same time the Section will continue have activities that will nurtures the IEEE Malaysia Student Branch so that they remain active and relevant to their community.

D.2 Goals and Future Plans

The IEEE Malaysia Section goal is to be the leader of technical society for electrical and electronic engineers in the country. We hope to increase the visibility of IEEE among the public and to enhance benefits to members by providing members with access to high quality technical information through lectures, short courses, workshops and conferences. We are also putting more efforts in promoting community services Malaysian-wide by increasing cooperation with the industry and society at large.

The Section also plans to attract more members and upgrade the membership status of its members. Efforts to increase student members and student branches will be carried out more actively.
