CHAIRMAN’S REPORT

Report compiled by Patrick Phelan OVERVIEW OF SEASON 2017/2018

How do you determine if the club has had a good year or not?? Is it how well the clubs number one side went or all ten sides on Saturday or Mid-Week. I believe it is how the club went generally, so I am of the opinion the Club has had a very successful 2018. All of our Pennant sides have performed well. The second, third and seventh sides all made finals on Saturday and we had nine sides play finals in the mid-Week Pennant, with the number three side going on and winning the Grand Final. With all these great results a big thank you to all the selectors, it is not an easy task to pick twenty teams, so well done. The Club is also looking at ways to improve amenities and the club surrounds. The terrace area is going to be refurbished with a roof covering over the whole area. Our number two green had a major renovation at Christmas time and the playing area has improved. Corporate Bowls

A big thank you must go to Brian Milnes and all the volunteers who have helped with the running of corporate bowls again this year. Next year it will get bigger and there is always a call for more help, so all bowlers can think about offering to help now and again. Appreciation

The Club has become successful due to the tireless work of the coaches; Laraine Pile and her crew of coaches have done a wonderful job with all the new players. Barrie Lester has now been at the club five years and what a success that has been, winning the Australian Open Pairs with his mate Josh Thornton in June last year, and then both of them being selected in the Australian team to play in the 2018 Commonwealth Games in various events. Well done to you both. (I know Josh plays elsewhere). At this time I would like to personally thank my committee for their wonderful work that has been carried out this year. A special thanks to Graeme Jeffree for stepping in when Frank Barlow resigned for personal reasons. I am also appreciative of all the work our sub-sections do as well. A special thanks to Janet Morrison, Diane Quigley and their sub-committee for another great Pink Ribbon Day for the McGrath Foundation, another great contribution from our wonderful club. A special thanks to David West, for his ongoing work with the website for tournament and club championship draws. This is an appreciation from me personally to all our special volunteers that help out on our Wednesday Triples and the Saturday Pennant Rosters, thank you to all. Last but not least I would like to thank Graeme Findlay, Terri Marley and Peter Coughlin for their tireless work on the committee; they will be big shoes to fill. Sponsors

We acknowledge the great sponsors the club has. Without their great support we would not be able to run great tournaments. We thank, Barry Plant, Wheelers Hill Traders, Lend Lease Peppertree Hill and the great club Mulgrave Country Club. A special thanks to Mik Tuz and Graeme Little for their effort in helping raising sponsorship.

Preview Next Season

We all know Mulgrave Country Club is successful because of the facilities we have and the great work of Club Management and all Club sections. Everybody at the club does a good job representing the club well when playing away and at our home venue. We have three good greens that will get better and better as time goes by. All the good work by our greens staff, including Jason and Michael, with a bit of help from Stephen Staff. I encourage all those members who wish to be an umpire or a coach to get on board and enjoy the good work that all our other coaches and umpires enjoy. So in closing I would like thank the Board and Club Management for all their ongoing help. So let’s make next Pennant Season 2018/2019 a better one. Thank You Patrick Phelan Chairman Bowls Section

FINANCIAL REPORT

Report compiled by PETER COUGHLIN The Bowls Section deficit for the last season was $37,675 - a figure approximating the previous season's deficit viz., $37,693. As usual there were "swings and roundabouts " in the makeup of the result. Income from Entry Fees for Social bowls and tournaments was adversely affected by lower numbers of participants but conversely Championship entry numbers improved markedly. Included in the Raffles result is the sum of $1,592 collected for the McGrath Foundation - the Club generously bolstered this amount so that $4,000 was paid to the Foundation. Corporate Bowls income suffers when business enterprises book for a certain number of employees to play Bowls and a lower number attend the Club and of that number many choose to socialise rather than get on the green. Our convenor is looking at ways to correct this situation. Our expenses were affected by :- Bearing the Club's share of the 2017 Grand Final loss. This is a non-recurring cost. Prizemoney includes the costs for two Easter tournaments - this occurs due to varying dates for Easter . Umpire accreditation fees have increased as more bowlers have been prepared to undertake Umpires courses. Green Fees were substantially reduced as the renewal of Green 2 meant we ceased paying green fees to Burden Park. Inclement weather caused the cancellation of the Classic 4's tournament in March 2017 . The relevant entry fees were refunded to entrants in April 2017 (I.e., in the season under review). This report sees the conclusion of my term , after five years, as Financial Officer of the Bowls Section. I have enjoyed my time as a Committee member . Our meetings have provided lively discussion and robust debate which I believe have resulted in sound decisions. I wish the ongoing Committee well and am sure that it will look after the best interests of all Bowlers. Lastly I wish to thank Annette, Colin and the now departed Sally for their patience and help during my period of office. Peter Coughlin Financial Officer

MIDWEEK CLUB BOWLS MANAGER

Report compiled by Brian Milnes Overview

Well we have had a successful year with an influx of brand new bowlers joining our club. With coaching under Laraine Pile a number those new members progressed to our pennant teams which is encouraging. Monday Twilight, Wednesday Triples and Friday Pairs are the cornerstone of the social fabric of our club. Monday night triples as always, under the expert control of our ever popular Di Quigley and her helpers provides an opportunity for more experienced bowlers to play with new bowlers. Wednesday Triples Wednesday Triples is run by three loyal and expert teams of three dedicated organisers on a rotational basis. This works well and gives each team a break. When Wednesday became my task they all wanted to stay on which I greatly appreciated. Many of those new bowlers are playing on Wednesdays and speak well of the encouragement from fellow bowlers. Wednesday has been affected by the success of Tuesday Pennant in that some bowlers are not keen to play two consecutive days. We are getting numbers to fill 28 teams instead of 32 and 36 when compared with last year. Friday Pairs

Friday Pairs played on the 1st and 3rd Friday of the month and occasionally the 5th Friday, is holding up well under John Pilgrim and Don Lambie. Corporate Bowls.

Corporate Bowls has continued from where it left off the previous year. Many companies and social groups are using this for their Christmas breakups and for team bonding sessions. Pre-Christmas we had 15 companies with over 450 participants. Post-Christmas was a little quieter, as expected, but overall, we can be happy with the numbers. There were only four corporate cancellations due to hot weather and washouts. Many thanks to Kenny Pattison for his great work and friendly personality. We received a number of complimentary reports and expressions of appreciation for the friendly sessions. Finally, we couldn’t achieve this without our 18 tireless volunteers. My sincere thanks to all those who have made corporate bowls a great success again this year.

SATURDAY PENNANT BOWLS REPORT

Report compiled by Norm Whitehead 2017/2018 Selectors:

Eric Barrand, Lorraine Camm, Lyn Kelly, Stephen Staff, John Swale, Norm Whitehead (Chair) and Club Coach Barrie Lester. Having completed one season as chairman of selectors for the first time at Mulgrave Country Club, I tender this report. Overview

At the end of the home and away games we had 3 sides on top of the ladder, one side placed 4 th, one 6th , three 8th, one 9th and one 10th. Overall not as pleasing a result as we would have liked. Our two Division 1 sides retained their positions. Side Two made the finals but were defeated in

the first round. Our Division 2 side played finals, won their semi-final but were beaten in the section final, a good

effort overall. Our three Division 3 sides did a great job in retaining their positions; particularly when in many rounds they were playing opposition top and second sides from other clubs. No 7 side, Division 4 made finals and performed well No 8th side was relegated, however, playing in Division 5, there were 6 opposing sides that were

top, second or third sides in that section. Our 9th side, Division 5 finished middle of the road but did a very good job, considering all

opposition sides were 2nd and 3rd for their club. Our 10th side, Division 6 was relegated by a matter of 3 points. They had a long hard season. I

take my hat off to those who go out each Saturday and fight valiantly. Unfortunately this is often the side that suffers most from player movements. Selection

Unfortunately there were a lot of changes between sides due to unavailability. On average we had 23 players being unavailable each week, with the highest number being 33 players missing in one week. We would like to thank all the emergencies. Without them, we would have struggled to field full

teams. They happily step in at very little notice and often to travel considerable distances, to play for us. How do we fill vacancies in sides? Do we fill these with emergencies or do we consider players

from lower sides who have shown good form and deserve a chance to play at a higher level? My thoughts are that we should promote people from below, give them the opportunity and the challenge to play at a higher level.

Page 7 of 17 Bowls Section – Annual Report 2018

Consider this example from this season where there was a player in the 4 th side, performing very well. A position became available in the 3rd side and this player was promoted to the position. They played well and retained that position through to the finals. This person may have never have had that opportunity had we just slotted in an emergency for the day. That is a positive outcome. The downside is that it then creates movement in the next 7 sides. However, once again another 7 players may be given the opportunity. Similarly, some new bowlers this season were given the chance to play pennant. It was daunting for them but they took on the challenge and I especially thank the skips in those sides who supported our selections. It has been contemplated that we only field 9 sides next season. This would make our job much easier, with less movement of players but that would mean 16 people who have put their names down to play, who wouldn’t get a game. My thoughts are bowlers who indicate their willingness to play pennant should be given a go, regardless of the increased workload. Commitment

I will again reiterate, as has been done every season; a commitment to pennant is for the entire season and into the finals campaign. We appreciate that things happen over the course of a season and players have to drop out from time to time. However, it is disappointing, when trying to cement a side, to find that a player has booked a holiday or only wants to play home games or “didn’t think we would make the finals”. Similarly, commitment to pennant is commitment to play at your best and to work on areas of your game that need improvement. Communication

Voting slips are the first line of communication with the selectors, after a Saturday game. Every vote and comment is recorded in our voting analysis and reviewed by every selector before our meetings on Monday evening. There is also a Score Card Analysis and the sheets are available to be viewed at the bowling notice board area. Our open door policy seems to have worked well and I hope that those who chose to discuss selection matters with me or others on the committee found our communication helpful. Thank You

Our Side Managers deserve a huge vote of thanks. They ensure their side is organised to take part each week and hold responsibility to report back with score cards, voting slips and accurately completed Check Forms and results. Well done all. Finally but not least of all, thank you to my team, my fellow selectors comprising Lyn Kelly, Lorraine Camm, John Swale, Eric Barrand and Stephen Staff for their hard work and support, and Barrie Lester when available, for not only attending meetings every Monday night, but for responding to texts and emails 24/7, for being at the club early every Saturday morning preparing the managers kits and making sure everything runs smoothly. Thanks to John and Lyn for getting the voting slips in order at the end of play every Saturday night, Lyne for overseeing the big board and her administration work till late Saturday night. Also big thanks to Jan Whitehead for the computer work she’s done. Next Season

I see a great chance for our sides to build and consolidate in the coming season. Some of the newly promoted sides in 2017-2018 struggled in their new divisions but have, and will benefit from encountering stronger opposition and relegated sides will have a chance to find their level and achieve success and this, overall, will provide enjoyment and pride in our efforts each week.

Page 8 of 17 Bowls Section – Annual Report 2018

This year has been a learning curve for me. Whilst I have acted as Chairman of Selectors before at other clubs, I have had to encompass all that goes along with the position at THIS club. From big board management, learning particular players likes and dislikes, obtaining prize vouchers, post-game announcements and hiding the selection board from those who visit the room in the dark of night! It’s all been challenging and rewarding and I hope I have the chance to build on this for another season. At a Glance

SOCIAL BOWLS REPORT

Report compiled by DIANNE QUIGLEY Social Bowls Manager Dianne Quigley Assistant Manager Janet Morrison

Overview of Season 2017-2018

The 2017/2018 bowling season for our Social Bowls Events was once again very successful. Our events consisted of: monthly Happy Days, weekly Monday Night Triples, the Vermont South Challenge, the Cumberland View Challenge, the Open Fours Classic Tournament and the Easter Carnival involving the Easter Monday Open Triples Tournament. Club Events Hosted by Social Bowls.

Our monthly Happy Days continue to be very popular even though our team entry numbers were down again. Fortunately we did not have to cancel any Happy Days because of inclement weather. We raised $1,600 on our Pink Happy Day for the Jane McGrath Foundation and the Club matched our money which was great. A cheque valued at $4,000 was donated from our Club to the Foundation. A big thank you to Janet Morrison supported by her husband Phil and sister Jill for all of their hard work in organizing the raffle tables and "Cent Auction". Also thank you Janet for organizing the raffle table and prizes for every Happy Day and Special Event. Very sadly we have to accept Janet’s resignation from our Social Bowls committee. Janet has been a faithful servant working diligently on our Social Bowls Committee since 2003. Cup Eve was a very successful night with a 15 end game of bowls followed by dinner. The special hats and Cup Sweeps were very popular. Monday Night Triples continued weekly throughout the bowling season. Thank you to Brian Milnes and Peter Coe for all of their assistance. Eleven new bowlers have improved their knowledge of how to play the game and their bowling skills while playing weekly with our experienced bowlers. Laraine Pile and her group of coaches did a wonderful job coaching our new bowlers and getting them ready to participate in our Twilight Bowls Program When the players were ready they moved on to participate in Pennant and other bowling events e.g. Wednesday Triples and Happy days. Our Vermont South Challenge was held at Mulgrave this year. It was a wonderful success . Thank you to Barrie Carson, Mick Crawley and Casey Cooper for their expert cooking of sausages and hamburgers. A special thank you to John Pilgrim who organized the teams and other aspects of the Challenge. With the inclusion of many excellent Mulgrave bowlers who live at Cumberland View and played for Cumberland View in our Challenge it was anticipated that Cumberland would come first but they came second to Mulgrave who were convincing winners. Thank you to Doiraine and Sandy who picked Mulgrave’s Teams. Our Easter Open Triples Tournament was a great success. We had 26 teams participating hopefully next year we will have a full house. Our annual week away to Tocumwal was a great success. Forty three Mulgrave bowlers attended. There was fierce competition between the 2 clubs. Mulgrave were the winners and many new friendships were made.

Appreciation.

Our 2017/2018 Social Bowls Committee has done a wonderful job once again throughout the entire bowling season. Two new members joined our Committee Lynette Snart and Casey Cooper. Sadly we are saying goodbye to Trevor and Cynthia Hird , they have resigned from our committee. Trevor has served many years on the Social bowls Committee and we thank him for his expert input and support over those years. David West has continued to be a tower of strength supporting us with his unlimited computer skills and knowledge. David has been a wonderful mentor to Anne Fitzmaurice who has taken over organizing the draws, cards and whiteboard. Our Social Bowls Program at the Mulgrave Country Club continues to be successful because of the dedication and loyal support of our committee members and Mulgrave Bowlers. 2017/2018 Committee Members:

PENNANT BOWLS MANAGER REPORT

Report compiled by GRAEME JEFFREE

Season Overview Saturday

In many ways this season was a season of consolidation for Saturday bowlers with 10 sides placed between division 1 and 6, with the top 6 sides in division 3 or higher. These were followed by sides in div 4 two in div 5 and side 10 in div 6. A high standard to maintain. Three of our sides finished in the top four with sides 2 and 3 on top and side 7 finishing 4th Side 3 won its semi-final and then lost the section final the other 2 sides lost in the semi-finals. Tuesdays

Overall the mid-week sides had a great season with 9 of the 10 sides making the finals with 6 of these finishing top at the end of the home and away season, 4 going on to win their section and the Thirds making the Grand Final and going all the way to win in an exciting match and take out the Premiership. This will result 5 sides being promoted In summary both selection groups have had good years.

Saturday selectors have consolidated the gains that we have been able to achieve in recent years. The spread next season will be div 1 to 7. The major disappointment being the number 2 side failing to win their section, although they were the dominant side throughout the season. The mid-week sides have been able to continue the progression of teams moving into higher sections this has taken time as we have introduced more players therefore additional teams. In future we need to make sure that our sides play in order of strength - this didn’t happen this season in the Saturday competition. However when the draw was first made we had the opportunity to indicate the order in the sections we wanted our sides to play in - this may have been considered favourably if we had made representation through the bowls committee to Bowls Victoria Selectors Both groups have had significant changes to personnel with two new Chairpersons and a complete change to the midweek group. It is hoped that a number of existing selectors continue in 18/19. In future we need to have the selectors spread over different renewal years to ensure continuity. Well done to both Norm and Sue. You and your teams you have had a great year. Barrie Lester’s role this year has been more as our marquee player rather than Coach as much of his time has been taken up in his successful bid to make the Australian Commonwealth games team. Congratulations Barry. General In the coming season the selectors will be asking for additional help to manage the voting slips and score cards immediately after the game. If you can help please contact Graeme Jeffree. Our next challenge is to enhance our Pennant practise sessions. Over time Pennant practice has fallen away due to the amount of bowls currently available. Finally thanks to all bowlers and now it’s time to start looking forward to next season. MATCH & TOURNAMENT REPORT

Report compiled by JOHN STRYBOSCH

MATCH & TOURNAMENT MANAGER John Strybosch ASSISTANT MANAGERS David West, Patrick Phelan COMMITTEE MEMBERS Dennis Jeffery, Stephen Staff John Anderton, Debbie Strybosch Overview of Season 2017/2018 Here we are at the end of another season, and what a season it has been! Apart from a few minor glitches, all events, to date, have been concluded successfully. The few changes instigated this season have proven to be very successful, with the overall participation rate increasing by 20%. We will look at other possible changes to increase the interest of all players and so, further increase participation. Hopefully, more of the over 80s next year won’t be so bashful and will give it a go. Congratulations to all competitors. There were some very close games and outstanding results. Well done, everybody. Don’t forget, TEAM App & BREAKING NEWS provide up to date results and information. Also results are on website under CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS tag. TOURNAMENTS

Special mention to Pat Phelan for the excellent organization and management of our two main tournaments, being the Peppertree Hill Retirement Village Triples, and the Wheelers Hill Traders Triples. Both events were well supported. Well done Pat. SPONSORS

We would like to acknowledge the support provided by our sponsors including, Peppertree Hill Retirement Village, Wheelers Hill Shopping and Business Centre, Barry Plant Real Estate plus the ongoing support we receive from the Mulgrave Country Club Board. Mik Tuz warrants a special mention for his ongoing great work in gaining and maintaining the sponsorship from the Wheelers Hill Traders. APPRECIATION

Thanks to David West for his help in the running of these events and putting all the information on the website. David has formatted the Calendar of Events plus the various Draws and Results in a manner that makes it easy for all bowlers to review the state of play via the internet. Thanks also to the other members on my committee for providing assistance as required, and also to the members who helped out on the days in putting up flags, setting up mats and jacks, etc.

MIDWEEK PENNANT REPORT

Report compiled by SUE MILLER The 2017/2018 Midweek Pennant Season commenced with a new Selection Committee, headed by myself with Peter Gawthorne, Ed Benetti, Chris Day, Joan Jeffery and Vivienne Matthews. The first decision that we had to make was to decide on whether we would continue to support the Ladies Only Competition and secondly, decide on how many sides we would submit to Bowls Vic. After a lot of discussion and soul searching and based on the number of bowlers wanting to play Midweek Pennant we decided to submit 10 Open Sides. This meant that we had to incorporate up to 30 extra ladies into the Open Sides. Sides 9 and 10 were both in the same section and had four byes each throughout the season. Bowlers were interchanged between the two sides and although not ideal, it gave quite a few the opportunity to play in the finals. Filling 9 or 10 sides each week was a challenge and I thank the bowlers who made themselves available to be emergencies. The first round was very successful, with 9 wins out of 9 as our Number 10 side had a bye. The rest of the season continued very well and after the final home and away games, 9 sides finished either first and second on the ladder, resulting in 9 home games. As Mulgrave could not accommodate that many sides at home, Sides 7, 9 and 10 played their first final game at Burden Park. Unfortunately, not all sides were successful on that day, however we ended up with 4 Section Winners Flags – Side 1, 2, 3, and 9. Side 3 went on to win the Division Final. Congratulations to all bowlers for a fantastic year. Next season, providing we field 10 sides, will see: 2 x Division 1 1 x Division 2 2 x Division 3 3 x Division 4 2 X Division 5 I would like to thank each member of the Selection Committee personally: Chris and Joan for getting the cards and score sheets ready each Monday. Chris for submitting the scores by phone and email to Bowls Vic each Tuesday afternoon and for being available early Tuesday mornings to make any last-minute changes Vivienne for entering the individual scores into the data base and getting them to the rest of us in time for our meeting the next morning and for her ‘Quote of the Day’ Ed for diligently picking the duty teams each week. Peter for his help and guidance in difficult situations and for chairing the meetings in my absence. I had a great team and we all worked well together.

Page 15 of 17 Bowls Section – Annual Report 2018

To the bowlers who acted as Side Captains throughout the season, I thank you. It’s a big responsibility and you all did a great job. Lastly, I have to thank David West for his help with the computer system. Many a time we called him in dire straits and he dropped everything to come to our aid. I have enjoyed my role as Chair of Midweek Pennant immensely and I thank the Bowls Committee for giving me this opportunity. Sue Miller Chair Midweek Pennant Selection

GREENS DIRECTOR REPORT

Report compiled by FRANK BOOTH and STEPHEN STAFF Greens Director - Frank Booth Deputy Greens Director - Stephen Staff Greenkeeper - Michael Di'Mattia The Season which is coming to a close has overall been a good one from the point of view of the state of the Greens at Mulgrave Country Club. Green 1 - As stated in the report last year, the "bent" Green is a tired Green, it is well past it's use by date. A decision will need to be made shortly regarding our future course of action in relation to this green. in the meantime we will continue to "nurse" it along. Green 2 - This was the first full year that the Green was available for play. It followed the normal course of development that all "Tiff" Greens do at this stage of their life. It was slow and furry early with feedback suggesting it needed a re-laser level job done. After much discussion between the three of us we made the decision to switch the pending major renovation of Green 3 over to this Green. It was the right call. The Green on being laser levelled saw some rectification work need to be done. This was duly carried out. After the Christmas break this Green on being re-opened was initially slow which was to be expected. It had a significant top dressing on it and it takes time to settle down, normally 4 to 6 weeks. By late January it started to run much better and now Green 2 is performing beautifully. Green 3 - This Green performed well all year. At this stage we intend to give it a major renovation this coming December, this will be the first time we have needed to do this in approximately 5 years. All Greens on being inspected by the Eastern Ranges Bowls Region inspectors received an "A" Grade rating. I would like to close this Annual Report with a couple of words to thank Stephen Staff, Green Keeper Michael Di'Mattia and his assistant Jason for their efforts throughout the year. Finally, thank you to our members for giving us positive feedback on the condition of the Greens during the Bowls Season Frank Booth Stephen Staff Greens Director Deputy Greens Director
