SIMON SAYS GIVE 2017 ANNUAL REPORT2

A NOTE FROM THE FOUNDERThank you to everyone who participated in High Five for Supplies, the world’s largest birthday celebration in collaboration with Mall of America, and all of our many other volunteer opportunities, or donated to help us impact 2 million children by 2022. I am so excited to announce that our South Dakota chapter continues to make a big difference in their communities impacting thousands of children this year.

Last year we welcomed Simon Eber to our Simon Says Give family. Simon has helped a lot of children in his community. Nolan Fleming and I got the chance to go out to Worcester, Massachusetts, and help give 161 backpacks. Nolan Fleming, our South Dakota Kid President, and I also attended some business meetings along with Simon to see how we could partner more with the community.

In our Minnesota chapter, our Kid Advisory Board worked hard all 2017 to prepare for the first Give Awards. The Give Awards took place in January of 2018, there were 20 youth nominated for giving back to their communities. I am also so very excited to announce that our very own Myles Bowen is starting his Evanston, Illinois, Simon Says Give chapter! Myles will be working with the Northwestern University community to help celebrate birthdays this year.

I am so excited about what this next year has to bring and what we have accomplished this past year, including our very first gala. Thank you so much to all of our sponsors and volunteers, you guys really all make a huge impact in our nonprofit.

2017 JACQUE AWARDS

Jacque Fiegel was our first donor. She wrote the check that allowed us to move forward on our journey to start Simon Says Give. We present the Jacque Award in her honor to individuals or companies that have moved us fast forward on our journey. The 2017 award recipients were:

Sara Durham of Mall of America. Sara was the key person and reason we partnered with MOA for the World’s Largest Birthday Celebration.

Karla Gunderson of Innovative Office Solutions. Karla has been our partner and connector to other amazing resources in the community for many years.

UNSTOPPABLE AWARDS

Our mission “ To Develop the Next Generation of Leaders to be Unstoppable.” At our Gala in 2017, we presented a new Unstoppable Award to two leaders that showed our youth what Unstoppable Leadership looks like. The 2017 award recipients were:

Tony Bestinger of Innovative Office Solutions. Tony and his team act as our warehouse and logistics center during our High Five for Supplies impact event each summer.

Russ Helser of Mall of America. Russ manages the logistics team at MOA, he was the unstoppable logistics force to pulling off our World’s Largest Birthday Celebration!

THE NOLAN FLEMING YOUTH LEADERSHIP AWARD

Similar to the Jacque award, we wanted to honor the first youth leader who stepped up to start his own chapter. We presented Nolan Fleming with a Youth Leadership award. Nolan will honor youth each year moving forward with his named award.

We thank Innovative Office Solutions for their sponsorship of our beautiful awards.

SIMON SAYS GIVE 2017 ANNUAL REPORT8

A NOTE FROM MADDIEI am amazed that it has been one year already that I have gotten to be a part of Simon Says Give! Through this first year, I have been so fortunate to get to work with everyone on the KAB and our adult mentors, we have come so far in reaching our goals.

Our first ever Give Awards took place in January of 2018, at the Brave New Workshop, and it was great to see our hard work pay off!

We had a busy year full of lots of accomplishments, and I am so thankful that I am a part of it all!

Maddie Schlehuber Kid President | SSG Minnesota 2017-18

MINNESOTA CHAPTER

2017 HIGHLIGHTSSimon Says Give celebrated our 5th Birthday on April 13, 2017. WOW, what a year of celebration we had!

Fun Fact: We chose April 13th as our birthday, because that was the date of our first kid’s birthday party.

Summer of Impact: In an extremely busy six days, we supplied 2,500 Birthdays in a Box and 7,000 backpacks to our community.

World’s Largest Birthday Celebration: Simon Says Give turned 5 in 2017 and Mall of America turned 25, so we threw a party! Together, we created the World’s Largest Birthday Celebration, where we packed 2,500 Birthdays in a Box on August 8th. During the summer we had a “Box Office” (a store location) at the mall where our youth worked in with hundreds of volunteers getting ready for the big event. We can’t thank MOA enough for their partnership!

High Five for Supplies: A few days prior to our celebration at MOA, we conducted our High Five for Supplies event at St Thomas Academy with hundreds of volunteers! We delivered about 8,000 backpacks full of supplies to kids in our community!

Kid Advisory Board Give Awards: Throughout the year, our Kid Advisory Board team worked on the Give Awards. The Give Awards took place in January 2018. The award program from beginning to end was planned and paid for (via fundraising) by the Kid Advisory Board team. It was amazing to watch the team’s leadership skills, project management and public speaking abilities grow.

First Gala: In October, we celebrated our 5th Birthday and our record accomplishments with our first Gala. We celebrated with a sold-out crowd in a beautiful event space at Mall of America. The many youth that attended the event played at Nickelodeon Universe while the adults enjoyed beverages and desserts.

SIMON SAYS GIVE 2017 ANNUAL REPORT 9

A NOTE FROM NOLANOverall, it was a great year! I think we helped more kids, raised more money, gave more birthdays, and were fortunate to have meeting spaces donated to us by some caring business owners so we can store and pack our birthday supplies.

I got to go to Massachusetts to meet a new Kid Chapter President, Simon Eber, and help him start up a new chapter of Simon Says Give. Mandi Simon and I had a fun time hanging out with Simon getting to know each other.

I’d like to give special thanks to the officers from the Sioux Falls Police Department and the South Dakota Highway Patrol who donated their time both off and on duty to Simon Says Give. Their contribution has made a huge difference to kids in need and the kids in our organization. We value their partnership on our Cops vs Kids event as well as their time and talent they bring to us throughout the year. THANK YOU for all you do!

We are growing — here’s to impacting 2 million kids by 2022!!!

Nolan Fleming Kid President | SSG South Dakota

SOUTH DAKOTA CHAPTER

2017 HIGHLIGHTS• We had big goals for birthdays this year and we hit

them. We provided 250 Birthdays in a Box to kids in need. Big thanks to everyone who donated birthday gifts, supplies, who packed, shopped, sorted and helped deliver. It was an amazing year of kids celebrating kids!

• Jonah, Nolan, Brenna and Donnie travelled to Minneapolis to help our Minnesota chapter with the World’s Largest Birthday Celebration. We helped pack 2500 birthdays! It was 2 days of hard work and fun!

• We hosted our second annual Cops vs Kids event. We had a dozen or so SD Highway Patrol and SF Police Officers who participated in games and activities with kids in our community. This year we had even more kids in need who were able to attend and interact with our officers. We used this year’s event’s free-will donations for our Birthday in a Bag program so even more kids will be celebrated.

• We’ve just started a new partnership with Sicangu Child and Family Services to provide Birthdays in a Bag and winter clothing. Can you imagine not having a winter coat in South Dakota! Brrrrr!

• Our kid and adult advisory boards are awesome! We have some of the best people. They are dedicated, hard-working, fun, funny, just plain awesome. And the parents of our kid board, they are pretty great too.

• Our sponsors, volunteers and donors are the absolute best. Without them there’s no way we can do all we do. Thank you is not enough.

2017 HIGHLIGHTSBirthdays: We hosted our first four birthday parties to celebrate some more great kids! Our new partner The Learning Hub provided a Gift of Learning to go with the Gifts of Fun and Need. Sweet and The Queen’s Cups have provided Birthday Cakes.

Fundraising: We received our first grant from Bay State Savings for $1000! Simon got to hold a big check. We had a wine tasting at The Wine Vine and raised over $1000 and Simon and his dad donated their birthdays and raised almost $5000! All totaled we raised more than $10,000 in 2017.

Community: We got a lot of media attention we didn’t expect in newspapers, on TV, and web sites. The Worcester Public Schools sent Simon a letter of appreciation. Simon’s new high school offered to create a club next year to support Simon Says Give.

2018 Goals: We will be building a kid board and working with volunteers all around the area to expand our chapter’s reach and celebrate even more kids!

A NOTE FROM SIMONI had no idea how fast things would take off for us in 2017. I thought our first year would be just figuring out what to do. Then I met a principal at a high-need school in our city. One thing led to another and I ended up coming up with an idea for our High Five for Supplies initiative.

That’s when things really got fun and busy! We ended up adopting that principal’s entire school (Columbus Park) and two other high-need schools in Worcester (Woodland Academy and Midland Street). We provided all the graduating elementary school classes backpacks in the color of their choice, filling them with all the supplies on their middle school lists, and presenting the backpacks directly to the students in June. Mandi and Nolan even came to help me present and meet the students at the first two schools!

All in all, we celebrated 161 graduating elementary school students with those backpacks.

SIMON SAYS GIVE 2017 ANNUAL REPORT 11

A NOTE FROM MYLESSimon Says Give’s past year (2017) has been absolutely amazing. I participated in our Summer of Impact which impacted around 60,000 kids. I also presented at our first ever Simon Says Give Gala at the Mall of America.

I loved seeing our Simon Says Give family grow this year and include the wonderful events team at Mall of America and many more dedicated volunteers.

However, the most exciting part of Simon Says Give 2017 for me was the opening of Simon Says Give Evanston! Our team dedicated a lot of time into opening a new chapter in Evanston, IL near Northwestern University, the college I attend. This huge task is really exciting to me because we will actually be able to go out into the community and begin impacting the youths of the greater Chicago area.

Here in Evanston we plan to celebrate at least ten birthdays by the end of 2018 and that is really exciting for us!

Myles Bowen Chapter President | SSG Evanston, Illinois

ILLINOIS CHAPTER A NOTE FROM DINA ON EXPANSIONOften, I am asked how we have decided to start chapters where we have. The answer has been pretty easy up to this point! We have been approached by Nolan Fleming, Simon Eber and now Myles Bowen with a true desire to take our mission into their communities. Therefore, we have had a youth leader who duplicated our model where they live.

We are so excited to have Myles take Simon Says Give to college with him. This will be our first college campus experience and we look forward to supporting him to see what magic we can make in this new model!

We have a huge goal of impacting 2 million kids by the year 2022. We are so proud of the impact number of 121,525, but we have a long way to go to hit that larger number. We are looking forward to seeing how we might duplicate our efforts in thousands of communities without having to have formal chapters established. Maybe a “National Birthday in a Box” day?

Our Adult Board team is growing with leaders to think through how we can support our youth with big impact goals, and we look forward to hearing from any of you as to how we might tackle this fun impact challenge.

We are honored to have Nolan, Simon and Myles taking Mandi’s kitchen table idea when she was 8 years old, to what it is today. We thank our Kid Advisory Boards for their dedication to our chapters and the 1,500+ youth that have partnered in our accomplishments of 2017.
