Eachyearoffersnewopportunitiesandchallengesandthesepast12monthshavebeennoexception.

WestronglybelieveournewbrandingreflectsthevaluesoftheorganisationandouraspirationsforthefutureandwewillcontinuetopromoteCaraasaplaceforopportunityforpeoplewithadisabilityandtheirfamilies.

Atthebeginningoftheyear,thelaunchofournewidentitycoincidedwiththereleaseofour2007-2009StrategicPlan,theaimofwhichistoexpandourservicesandliftourprofilewithinthecommunity.AtthesametimewealsoestablishedourFundraisingandMarketingteam.

TheBoard,inmeetingitsnewandincreasinglycomplexresponsibilities,hasalsoestablishedaFundraisingandMarketingSub-CommitteeandaServiceDevelopmentSub-Committee.ThenewCommitteesjointheConsumerReferenceCouncilandtheotherexistingSub-Committeesinensuringeffectivemanagementoftheorganisation.

DuringtheyearwewerepleasedthatbothMaxBeacomandMichaelElwoodacceptedtheinvitationtobeco-optedtotheBoard.Equally,CarolHammond’sacceptanceofapositioncreatedbytheresignationofDrBrianMatthewsinMarch,hasfurtherenhancedtheBoard’sskillsandexperience.

WethankBrianforhiscontributiontoCara.DuringhistenureBrianprovidedvaluableassistancewiththedevelopmentofActiveSupportandinstrengtheningourrelationshipwiththeFacultyofDisabilityStudiesatFlindersUniversity.

TheConsumerReferenceCouncilcontinuedtoprovidevaluablefeedbackonorganisationalmattersincludingtheStrategicPlan,thenewCarabrand,privacy,marketingandfundraising.

Weremaininasoundfinancialpositionandlooktothefuturewithconfidence.SpecialthankstoTreasurer,JohnCase,andtheFinanceandAuditSub-CommitteewhohavebeengreatlyassistedthroughouttheyearbyourFinancialAdvisors,PrescottSecurities.

RevisionstoourLifestylePlanningmodeloccurredduringtheyear.Thisimportantaspectofourserviceprovisionaimstoreinforcetheimportanceofindependence,self-determinationandconfidentialityinmeetingpeople’sneeds.

InJanuarywefarewelledtheDisabilityHealthCareSupportServicenursingteam.TheteamwereanintegralpartofCaraforover12years.TheservicehasnowbeentransferredtotheRoyalDistrictNursingServiceandChildren,YouthandWomen’sHealthService.Themovewillprovideforgreaterclinicalsupportforteammembersandabetterunderstandingoftheneedsofpeoplewithdisabilitiesfromwithinthemainstreamhealthsector.

OverthenextthreeyearsweaimtoaddresstheurgentandgrowingdemandforaccommodationandrespiteservicesacrosstheState.

Currently,weprovidesupporttoover550childrenandadults,howeverweareacutelyawareofasignificantnumberofcarerswhoareageingandseekingguaranteedaccommodationsupportfortheirsonordaughter.

Thedemandsonallofourrespiteservices,especiallycentre-basedrespite,isgrowing.DespitenosignificantincreaseinFederalandStateGovernmentfundingforeitheraccommodationorrespiteservicesthisyear,theBoardhasre-affirmeditscommitmenttofurtherexpansioninboththemetropolitanandcountryareasandhassettargetsforservicegrowthintheseareas.

Whileweneedtolookforalternativeavenuesoffundingtomeetexistingcostsaswellasfuturedemand,weareappreciativeofcurrentStateGovernmentfundingandweaimtocontinueaconstructivepartnershipwithboththeOfficeforDisabilityandClientServicesandDisabilitySAtoensurethebestpossibleoutcomesforpeoplewithadisabilityandtheirfamilies.

Encouragingly,wehavebeensuccessfulingainingalternativefundingthroughcommunitysupportforournewVacationRespiteandParent’sRetreatprogramsandwehavealsoexpandedourCampsforKidsschedule.

However,moreneedstobedonetoraisetheprofileofservicesforpeoplewithdisabilitiesatbothastateandnationallevelandwewillcontinuetotakealeadershiproleinthisarea,inadditiontoourinvolvementwithNationalDisabilityServices,CPAustraliaandtheAssociationofNon-GovernmentOrganisationsofSouthAustralia.

Aswemoveforwardandexpand,ourcorestrengthswhichincludeourstrongvolunteerbaseandqualitymanagementsystemswillbevitaltousachievingourgoals.

Althoughsystems,policiesandproceduresarecritical,itisthedaytodayexchangesthatreallymakeadifferenceinhowpeoplewithadisabilityandtheirfamiliesfeelaboutusandourservices.

Inthisregard,ourstaffareourgreateststrength.Theirvalues,skillsanddedicationarethekeytotheprovisionofourqualityservicesandreputationwithinthesector.Areputationthatisbuiltuponstrongknowledgeandexpertiseandthatisrecognisedbyclientsandfamilies,fundingagenciesandmoreimportantlythewidercommunity.Recognitionbythecommunity,inparticular,iscriticaltothedevelopmentoffuturecommunityandcorporatepartnerships.

Acrossthesectorthedemandforcommunitybasedserviceshascontinuedtogrowandthishasimpactedonthelevelofavailablestaff.However,theintroductionofournewtraineeshipprogramisdesignedtoattractandretainnewemployees,whileouraccreditedLeadershipProgramisalsoprovidingacareerpathwayforCommunitySupportWorkers.

Nevertheless,ourstaffturnovercontinuestoberelativelylowandthishasenabledustoretaintheservicesofmanyskilledandexperiencedpeople.

WhilewehavenowdevelopedourowndirectionsforCaraasanindependentagency,ourreputationhasbeenbuiltontheworkofsomanypeopleforwellover55years–aspartoftheSpasticCentreofSouthAustraliaNetwork.

OfspecialnoteareourhardworkingandvaluedPatronsandAuxiliaries.OurGawler,NorthEasternandMarionAuxiliarieshavenowbecome‘FriendsofCara’whiletheWoodvilleAuxiliarywillcontinuetoworktosupportscosa.TheBoardandManagementareverygratefulforthesupportthateachgrouphasprovidedovertheyearsandlooksforwardtotheircontinuedinvolvement.

Toour300plusvolunteers,thankyou.YourtimeandcommitmentbodeswellforCaraandourmissiontoinvolvethecommunityinthelivesofpeoplewithadisability.Weareveryproudtohavesuchastronganddiversevolunteerbase.

Inaddition,overtheyearwehavebeenextremelygratefulfortheinputfromBoardDirectorMichaelElwoodwhoseexpertiseandenthusiasmweresignificantfactorsintheestablishmentofourmarketingstrategies.

NicknackBrandCommunicationsarealsotobecongratulatedfortheirperceptionandcreativityindevelopingournewvisualidentity.

Cara’s26accommodationservicescontinuedtodeliverqualitycommunitybasedaccommodationin2007.

Overall,112peoplewithadisabilitywereprovidedwiththeopportunitytoliveindependentlyinacombinationofindividualandsharedaccommodationstyleservices.

Therewasnomajorexpansionofaccommodationservicesovertheyear,howevernewopportunitieswerecreatedwiththeMarkerStreetserviceinEnfieldexpandingtooperateonafulltimebasis.

Regionally,servicesatMurrayBridge,PortAugustaandMountBarkercontinuedtoreceivestrongcommunitysupport.

Acommitmenttobestpracticehasseenthelatestresearchandinnovationintegratedintoouraccommodationservices.

NewinitiativessuchasLifestylePlanningandActiveSupporthavecreatedopportunitiestoempowerandensurepeoplewithadisabilityhaveaproactiveroleindecisionmakingandcontrolovertheirlife.

TheimplementationofLifestylePlanshasprovidedakeytoolforpeoplewithadisabilitytocommunicatetheirneedsandchoicestothosewhosupportthemathomeandinthecommunity.

ActiveSupport,whichwillrolloutacrosstheorganisationoverthenexttwoyearsisanewprogramdevelopedintheUnitedKingdomthatisdesignedtoimproveandincreasethelevelofparticipationandengagementofpeoplewithdisabilitieslivinginthecommunity.

OverthepastyearCara’sSkillsEnhancementServicehasbeenworkingcloselywithDrKeithMcVilly,RMITUniversityMelbourneandAssociateProfessorRogerStancliffe,UniversityofSydney,topreparetheprogramforimplementationandundertaketherelevanttraining.

TheprojecthasalsoestablishedastrongpartnershipwithDrBrianMatthewsofFlindersUniversity’sDepartmentforDisabilityStudiesandCarnegieMellonUniversitywhowillcontributetotheframeworkforevaluationtosupporttheevidence-basedresearchcomponentoftheprogram.

ActiveSupportwillensurepeoplehaveavaluedlifestyle,participatemorefullyinthecommunityandcontinuetodevelopnewskillsandsocialnetworks.

ItwillalsoprovidepeoplewithadisabilitytheopportunitytointegratetheirgoalswiththeirindividualLifestylePlan.

TheSkillsEnhancementServicealsoassistedsevenpeoplewithadisabilitytoachievetheirgoaloflivingindependentlybysupportingthemtolearnandmaintaintheskillsrequiredtomoveoutofthefamilyhome.

ThisinvolvedarangeofprogramsincludingaLiteracyCourserunovertwoschooltermsasaresultofanAdultCommunityEducationGrant.

Anewbeginning...Aftermuchconsultationwithkeystakeholders,Caralauncheditsnewbrandandcorporateidentityon1February2007.

Themoveheraldedapositiveandexcitingfuture,revealinganewlogoandcontemporaryimageryfocusedonpromotingCaraas‘a place for opportunity’.

ThenewbrandcameasaresultofadecisionmadebytheBoardtoestablishCara’sownmarketingandfundraisingpresence,thusendingitsassociationwiththeSpasticCentreofSouthAustraliaNetwork.

ThedecisionalsoreflectedagrowingneedtoengagecommunitysupportandmeettheunmetdemandforaccommodationandrespiteservicesacrosstheStateforpeoplewithadisabilityandtheirfamilies.

ThenewdirectionwillallowCaratofocusitseffortsonraisingawarenessaboutaccommodationandrespiteissuesinadditiontoprofilingtheimportanceofthesevitalservices.

The new direction will allow Cara to focus its efforts on raising

awareness about accommodation and respite issues.

StronggrowthinthenumberoffamiliesandpeoplewithadisabilityutilisingrespitecontinuestohighlighttherisingdemandforservicesacrosstheState.

Cara’ssixcentrebasedrespiteservicesallhadanincreaseinthenumberofindividualsaccessingtheirservices.Overall,thenumberofindividualsincreasedby10percentfortheyearandhasgrownby28percentoverthepastthreeyears.

Demandremainedtraditionallystrongduringholidayperiodsandweekendsandafocusonensuringthecentresprovideacomfortableandstimulatingenvironmentsawupgradestogardens,playequipmentandinteriors.

Cara’sCampsforKidsprogramaddedtwonewcampstoitsschedule.Theprogramran14campsintotalacrosstheyearandprovided650nightsofrespitefor72children.

ThecampswereheldatavarietyoflocationsacrosstheStateincludingBerri,VictorHarbor,Clare,RenmarkandtheAdelaideHillsandprovidedarangeofchallengingandfunactivitiesincludingbushtrekking,canoeing,swimming,sailinganddaytripstolocaltouristattractions,themeandwildlifeparks.

ThelargestcampfortheyearwasundertakeninpartnershipwithScoutsSAwith25boyswithadisabilityenjoyingtheopportunitytomakethemostoftheschoolholidaysinJanuary.Thecampwasamassiveundertakinginvolvingover50volunteersandtheactivesupportoflocalserviceclubsandcommunitygroups.

Supportedbytrainedstaffandvolunteersthecampsalsoprovidedparentsandcarerswithawellearnedbreakfromtheeverydayresponsibilitiesoflookingafterachildwithadisability.

FamiliesforFamiliesrecruitedfivenewfamiliestotheprogramduringtheyear.Atotalof34volunteerhostfamiliesprovidedovernightcarefor29childrenwithadisabilityoneweekendamonthoraspartoftheschoolholidays.

With12childrenstillonthewaitinglistseekingplacementwithahostfamily,theFamiliesforFamiliesteamworkedcloselywithotherCararespiteservicestosourceotheralternatives.

MobilerespitecontinuedtoprovidearangeofholidayopportunitiesforyoungadultswithadisabilityatlocationsincludingPortBroughton,WestBeach,Gawler,VictorHarborandKangarooIsland.

Respite

HolidayIndependence,aprogramdevelopedinresponsetothegrowingdemandforrespiteanddevelopmentalprogramsforyoungpeoplewithadisabilitylivingathome,offeredanotheralternative.

Theprogramdiffersfromotherrespiteservicesduetoitsfocusonusingtheholidaytimetohelpparticipantsfurtherdeveloptheirindependentlivingskillstopreparethemforthetransitionfromhometoindependentlivinginthecommunity.

LikeMobileRespite,theprogramwasofferedtopeoplewithadisability16to30years.Itinvolvedsupportingagroupofparticipantstoorganiseandundertakeagroupholiday,thefirstofwhichwasheldatBungareeStationinClare.

Todatetheprogramhassuccessfullysupportedanumberofindividualsinachievingtheirgoalofindependence.

OutcomesandIntensiveHomeSupportmaintainedahighlevelofservicetofamiliesandindividualsrequiringregularassistanceintheirownhomes.

NewinitiativesfortheyearincludedtheestablishmentofaVacationRespiteprogramandtheintroductionofaCarerRetreatprogram.

TheVacationRespiteprogram,fundedbytheStGeorgeFoundation,cateredforyoungpeoplewithadisabilityunabletoaccessexistingschoolbasedvacationcare.

Activitiesprovidedbytraditionalvacationcareprogramsarenotalwayssuitableforyoungteenswithadisabilityandthenewprogramprovidedamuchneededalternativeforparents.Italsoofferedparticipantstheopportunitytotakepartindifferentcommunitybasedactivitieswhilesocialisingwiththeirpeers.

Auniqueaspectoftheprogramwastheinvolvementofpeervolunteers.PrimaryschoolstudentsfromSouthernValesChristianCollegepairedupwithparticipantstoassisttheminarangeofactivities.Havingvolunteerstheirownageinvolved,offeredanevengreateropportunitytodevelopnewsocialnetworks.

Itisanticipatedthatwithfurtherfundingtheprogramwillexpandtooperateacrossseverallocationsforeachschoolholiday.

TheCarerRetreatprogramconcentratedonrespiteofadifferentkind.38parentsandcaregiversofpeoplewithadisability,wereprovidedwiththeopportunitytohaveaweekendawayandrechargetheirbatteries.

Theprogram,madepossiblethroughgrantsfromCommunityBenefitSAandCarers’SA,involvedfourgroupsofparentsandcaregiversspendingaweekendcruisingtheRiverMurrayonahouseboat.

Carastaffvolunteeredtheirtimetoensureallguestswerepamperedoverthethreedaybreakallowingthemtounwind,relaxandspendsometimewithotherstodiscussandsharetheirexperiencesofcaringforapersonwithadisability.

Theprogramhasbeenagreatsuccessandmoreretreatsareplannedforthecomingyear.

SupportfromthecommunitycontinuedtoassistCara’sgoalofprovidingongoingopportunitiesforpeoplewithadisabilityandtheirfamiliestolivefullandrewardinglives.

Ourpoolofmotivatedandenthusiasticvolunteerscontinuedtogrow,withover55volunteerssupportingaccommodationandrespiteservicesandanother245activelyinvolvedinvolunteeringforCampsforKids,FamiliesforFamilies,MobileRespite,theConsumerReferenceCouncil,theBoardandourAuxiliaries.

Volunteersrangedfromprimaryschoolstudentstothoseintheireighties.Theyallundertookarangeofactivitiesincludingdirectlysupportingchildrenandadultswithadisabilityathomeorinthecommunity,assistingwithshopping,outings,learningnewskillsandtravelling.

Volunteersalsoprovidedassistancetoensureourservicesremainedingreatshapebypainting,renovating,keepingourgardensundercontrolandgenerallydoingwhateverweaskedofthem!

ParticipantsfromtheFederalGovernment’sWorkfortheDoleprogramwerealsoinvolvedinvolunteeringacrossCara.

OuraccommodationserviceinPortAugustahasparticularlybenefitedfromtheprogramwithacoregroupofparticipantssupportingtheserviceforasignificantlengthoftime.

OurAuxiliarygroups,nowknownas‘FriendsofCara’,continuedtobeactiveintheircommunities,raisingfundsthroughanumberofeventstosupportouraccommodationandrespiteservices.

Cara’snewActiveSupportprogramreceivedfundingfromthescosaWoodvilleWomen’sAuxiliarywhocontributed$30,000towardstheproject.Theirgenerosityandcommitmenttopeoplewithadisabilityistrulyappreciated.

ThesuccessofCara’sCampsforKidsprogramislargelyattributedtotheenormousamountofsupportitreceivesfromserviceclubsandcommunitygroups.In2006-2007alargenumberofLionsClubs,RotaryClubs,schools,universities,churchgroupsandScoutsSAagainpledgedtheirsupportandwereactivelyinvolvedinthecamps.

CarahasbeenthefortunaterecipientofcorporatesupportduringtheyearwiththeentireITnetworkinfrastructuretobereplaced,courtesyofCiscoSystemsAustralia.StaffmembersfromGEMoneyandToroAustraliadonatedtheirtimeassistingourservices.

AnumberofotherorganisationsincludingCarnegieMellonUniversity,EdwardsMarshall&Co,MichaelMullinsPhotography,NicknackBrandCommunications,PergolasofDistinctionandPrescottSecuritiesalsoprovidedin-kindsupport.

SupportfromTrustsandFoundationsin2006-2007wasoutstanding,withmanyfoundationscontributingtotheestablishmentofnewprogramsandprojects.SpecialmentionmustbemadeofthegeneroussupportreceivedfromAdultCommunityEducation,AustralianCiscoFoundationBoard,theCarers’Association,CiscoCivicCouncil,CommunityBenefitSA,MorialtaTrust,Premier’sCommunityInitiativesFund,PortAugustaCouncil,StGeorgeBankFoundationandVarietyClubSA.

Inanincreasinglycompetitiveenvironment,Caraisfortunatetoretainthesupportofmanygenerousindividualsandorganisations.Wethankallourwonderfulsupporters,volunteersandcorporateswithoutwhomwewouldnotbeabletoprovidequalityservicesforpeoplewithadisabilityandtheirfamilies.

Community Support

Cara is fortunate to retain the support of many generous

individuals and organisations. We thank all our wonderful

supporters, volunteers and corporates.

Caralaunchedits2007-2009StrategicPlaninJanuarytogiveeffecttoourvisionofCaraasaplaceforopportunity.Theplanaimstoaddress,withgovernmentandcommunitysupport,theurgentandgrowingdemandforaccommodationandrespiteservicesacrossSouthAustralia.

Thelast12monthshasseenthedevolutionofCara’sDisabilityHealthCareSupportService.Theservice,consistingofateamofregisterednurseswhoprovidehealthsupport,traininganddevelopindividualHealthSupportPlans,wastransferredtoChildren,YouthandWomen’sHealthServiceandtheRoyalDistrictNursingServiceinJanuary2007.

ThemoveisareflectionofCara’scommitmenttoensuringsupporttopeoplewithadisabilityandtheirfamiliesiscommunitybased.

Cara’sCorporateServicescontinuedtomanagethegrowingnumberofstaffjoiningtheorganisationwithstaffnumbersincreasingto372.

Inresponsetothechallengeofrecruitingqualitystafftomeetourservicedemand,Caraembarkedontwonewinitiativesduringtheyear.

IncollaborationwithSalvationArmyEmploymentPlus,TAFESAandBusiness SA,atraineeshipprogramwaslaunchedtoprovidepotentialemployeeswiththeopportunitytoworkasCommunitySupportWorkerswhilestudyingtowardsaCertificateIIIinCommunityServices(Disability).

ThisopportunitytoworkinthedisabilitysectorandgainarecognisedqualificationisauniqueofferingbyCaraandhasreceivedanenormousamountofresponse.

Duringtheyear,CaraalsoimplementedanewSMSrosteringsystemtoassistwithflexibleandefficientstaffrostering.AlertsregardingvacantshiftsaresentviaSMStoregisteredCommunitySupportWorkerstoviewandanswerataconvenienttime.

ThesystemhasprovedverysuccessfulwithCommunitySupportWorkersacceptingmoreshiftsthanwhatwaspreviouslypossibleviaphone.

StaffdedicationandsatisfactionofworkingatCarawasevident,with28staffmembersreaching10yearsofserviceormoreduringtheyear.SpecialacknowledgementmustbemadetoCarolBrooksandJanineMillikanwhocelebrated32and31yearsofservicerespectively.

TheEdnaRedmanServiceExcellenceAwardsforCommunitySupportWorkersagainacknowledgedthosecommittedtoensuringqualityoflife,communityinclusionandparticipationforpeoplewithadisability.TiffanyMitchellfromCara’sHarrowRoadaccommodationserviceandShannonMasonfromCo-TenancyandCampsforKidswerethedeservingrecipients.

AsamemberofCerebralPalsy(CP)AustraliawecontinuedtopromotetheunderstandingandawarenessofCP.DuringNationalCPWeektheorganisationplannedandundertookanumberofactivitiesincludingskillstrainingandworkshopstocelebratetheoccasion.

FamiliesforFamiliesHostParentandMatildaFundpioneer,JenniferCooperconsultedwithparentsandcaregiversaspartasherPhDresearchinto‘Howparentsofchildrenwithadisabilitymeettheirpersonalandsupportneeds’.Theaimoftheprojectistoexploreissuesrelatedtotheprovisionofpersonalsupport,especiallyduringtheperiodofdiagnosis,toparentsofchildrenwithadisability,withinthecurrenthealthandcommunitycareenvironments.

TheinputofparentsusingCaraserviceshasbeeninvaluableanditishopedthatthestudywillprovideapathwayfortheprovisionofbettersupportforparentsinthefuture.

01.StatementofsignificantaccountingpoliciesThefinancialstatementsareaspecialpurposefinancialreportpreparedinordertosatisfythefinancialreportingrequirementsoftheAssociationsIncorporationAct(SA)1985.ThefinancialstatementshavebeenpreparedspecificallyfordistributiontomembersinaccordancewiththeAssociation’sconstitution.
