Devotion to the mission of the Sisters of Charity of Cincinnati and St. Joseph Home allows us to serve all who we come in contact with through compas-sionate care and building loving relationships.

With the support of our gracious community, St. Joseph Home had another busy and successful year including many highlights:

• Increased Resident, Parent/Guardian and Community Awareness and Activities

• Celebration of Life and Remembrance Event • 20th Anniversary of the 5K Incline to the Finish Line — Walk, Run and Roll • Governor Kasich’s visit and signing of Ohio legislation • SJH Annual Appreciation Dinner • 28th Annual Golf Classic and Celebration • Continued emphasis on the “Four Pillars” and how they guide our daily care and services• Successful Green Space Project; Design, Approval, Funding and Groundbreaking completed• Official Impact 100 Grant Finalist for the Green Space Project• Welcomed two new residents this past year to our Pediatric Ventilator Unit and sadly said

goodbye to two friends Tommy and Penny

I would like to thank our Board of Directors and Committee Members for their oversight and guidance that allows us to continue to serve the needs of all touched by the St. Joseph Home Community. Special appreciation to the staff who provide the constant loving care to our residents and guests every day. The Nurses, Direct Support Professionals, Dietary Team, Environ-mental Services, Therapists, Administrative Staff and Senior Leadership Team along with our CEO — Dan Connors — are exceptional, we are very fortunate to have such associates.

With God’s guidance and grace we shall continue to serve His children and fulfill our mission.

In Service with You,

St. Joseph Home builds its set of values around core principles that we refer to as the Four Pillars. As I reflect on the past year, I think specifically of the Pillar of Community, built upon the thinking and teaching of Jean Vanier. While there are so many rich complexities to Vanier’s thought, it can be summarized as the idea that a healthy community is found where every member of the community is valued for the gifts that they have and are given the opportunity to share them. We are at our best when we are all working together.

It has been a successful year for St. Joseph Home, and these accomplishments are thanks to the remarkable community of people who support us. With that support, we began the process of building a beautiful Green Space, this year, which is featured in the pages that follow. The Green Space is an important start to our long term plan to modernize our campus in order to meet the future needs of individuals with developmental disabilities. It will also serve as a place where residents and guests of St. Joseph Home can have a space to interact, get to know each other, and enjoy the beauty of the outdoors. We couldn’t be more excited to see this project come to fruition in the coming year. These projects, however, are only possible as a community. St. Joseph Home is incredibly blessed to have donors, staff, families and guardians, and vendors who generously share their time, talent and treasures to help us achieve our mission.

Our Green Space Project is easy to highlight as a high profile example of the many exciting things that happen at St. Joseph Home. Every day, however, our Pillar of Community is being manifested in the incredible work of our staff as they care for and support the individuals that we serve. These small, moment by moment examples of community are every bit as powerful as the larger examples and contribute to the very sacred nature of the work at St. Joseph Home.

It is with heartfelt gratitude that I say thank you for working alongside us to make this year such an amazing example of community in action!

GROWING

For some of our younger residents, access to top level medical care, state of the art equipment and professional support staff has allowed them the opportunity to progress in leaps and bounds and live life fully. When Joseph came to stay at SJH in 2015 he was prone to complex respiratory complications, so he received a tracheostomy — an invasive and life-altering procedure that proved fruitful. The procedure surgically created an opening through the neck into the trachea (windpipe) where a tube is placed through this opening to provide an airway and to remove secretions from the lungs thus allowing Joseph to live a happier life. Two residents younger than Joseph, Hailey and Sophia, are experiencing huge successes of their own. Hailey is able to be without her ventilator three times a day for up to three and a half hours and Sophia is working towards having her own ventilator-free windows as well.

EMERGING LEADERS

Over the last year, a group of eight individuals has come together to form a hardworking, dedicated and passionate group called the SJH Emerging Leaders. They have set out to share the St. Joseph Home community with other young professionals in Greater Cincinnati. Already off to a strong start, they have hosted two successful events so far. First, they put on a networking social in the Spring. This gave the Emerging Leaders, as well as their coworkers and friends, the opportunity to spend time with some SJH residents. Most recently, along with a group of friends and coworkers, they came to the St. Joseph Home campus to do some volunteering. They detailed the buses, assisted with some gardening, and cleaned the entire Day Program facility. The dedication of this group has added so much to the SJH community and we are eagerly watching as they continue to grow.

VOLUNTEERING

The St. Joseph Home volunteers come in all different forms; individuals, groups, and one on one. Regardless of the size, each of them has a positive impact on our community. This was another year full of devoted volunteers. For example, we partnered with the inspiring Rejoice Youth Choir of Cedar Springs Presbyterian Church from Knoxville, TN this year. A group of about 60 students came out to our campus and performed for the residents and Day Program participants. Following the show, the choir students hung out with SJH residents and we were blown away by how kind and open the young students were. It was clear, these choir members, like all SJH volunteers, through their genuine interaction with residents, experienced something both spiritual and profound by breaking down stereotypes often associated with people with disabilities.

INCLINE TO THE FINISH LINE 20TH ANNIVERSARY

While it was unseasonably cold this year, our 20th Anniversary Incline to the Finish Line 5K proved to be another successful day! There was a great show of support from the more than 800 individuals that participated in the 5K; walking, running, and rolling. Following the race, everyone enjoyed a delicious breakfast during the awards ceremony recognizing the Fastest Running Team — Truepoint Wealth, The Fastest Rolling Team — Reagan’s Royals, The Largest Team — Team Andrew: Join the Empire, and The Most Spirited Team — Team Matt On Your Left as well as the First Place Male — William Hoffman and the First Place Female — Emmy Sager. Thank you to everyone who came out for this year’s event and the continued support of our residents and respite guests. We will see you for year 21 on April 14th, 2018!

There is a long list of things that we can take for granted each day such as; the fresh air with a soft breeze, the warmth of the sunshine and the smell of autumn. As we walk through life day after day, without noticing these simple pleasures, there are so many people who miss out on the opportunity to notice them at all. Among them are the remarkable people at St. Joseph Home. With support needs of movement, vision, hearing, cognitive ability, behavioral difficulties, and pain, it can be difficult to find ways for some residents and respite guests to enjoy the smells, sights and sounds of a sunny, autumn day. As it stands today, there is no place for the residents, respite guests, families and volunteers to safely enjoy time together outdoors.

Through the strength of our community, St. Joseph Home has been afforded the opportunity to develop six acres and offer an economical means to maintain the land. This project, already underway, will give the St. Joseph Home residents and respite guests access to a ¼ mile walking trail, breathtaking natural landscaping, a beautiful memorial garden, scenic overlooks and a comforting shelter area. The Green Space, set to be completed by spring 2018, will provide the SJH commu-nity with a park like environment where a resident or respite guest can enjoy a walk with their family or a volunteer can spend time tending to a vegetable or flower garden.

The Green Space Project will be another example of St. Joseph Home’s rich heritage. An important part of the Sisters of Charity mission is nurturing “Care for all Creation.” This project will carry out a “green” initiative by creating sustain-able marsh and natural area, protecting the land and properties surrounding the acreage through responsible storm water retention, while also promoting the principles on which the community was founded. The Green Space Project will represent the strength of the St. Joseph Home and Sisters of Charity missions and will bring new joys and opportunities to the SJH community.

For more information on the Green Space Project, contact Carrie Shoemaker at 513-563-2520 ext.127.

For 144 years St. Joseph Home has cared for those so often moved to the margins in our society. Today infants, children and adults with developmental disabilities and complex medical needs are given the opportunity to experience the fullness of life at St. Joseph Home. We believe people with disabilities, even the most extreme form of disability, are people with great gifts to share.

To ensure a lifetime of care will always be available, SJH es-tablished the Caring Companions Planned Giving Society. These gifts take the form of a bequest, a charitable remain-der annuity trust, a charitable gift annuity, a charitable lead trust, a gift of life insurance, a cash gift to our endowment fund, pooled income funds, and other acts of generosity and support. Your gift will provide care and support long into the future — and truly leave a legacy at SJH.

For more information on the Caring Companions Society, contact Lucienne Driehaus at 513-563-2520 ext. 124.
