Odyssey Program Evaluation

Odyssey’s SMART Objectives (Specific, Measurable, Achievable,

Realistic, and Time-Bound) were created in 2008 to quantify and

measure the progress of Odyssey’s students and of the program

itself. The objectives have been continually revised as the program

has evolved and are tied to Odyssey’s Strategic Plan (2010-2015).

A Quest for Knowledge…

- 80% of Odyssey Elementary students will improve in reading

- 90% of Odyssey students will read a minimum of 2 grade level

appropriate books

- 80% of Odyssey Elementary, Middle and High School students

will demonstrate writing improvement

- 80% of Odyssey Elementary and 70% of Odyssey Middle and High

School students will meet mathematics expectations

... A Path to College

- 90% of Odyssey students missed 3 days or less during the six week

Odyssey program

- 60% of Odyssey students were returning students

- 50% of the Odyssey students who complete the program during their

9th grade summer will remain in the program through their 12th grade

summer

- 90% of the Odyssey students participating in 12th grade will graduate

from high school

A comprehensive Odyssey SMART Objectives Report is available on our website.

“Odyssey brings out the best from Atlanta—devoted families work-ing hard to give their kids a leg up, expert teachers collaborating and flexing their creative muscles, passionate leadership that believes in the mission, and supportive advocates who work behind the scenes to make it all happen. Even in the oppressive heat of a Georgia summer, the kids are so joyful and earnest about the learning.”

“From the director to the teachers in the classroom, I love the salt-of-the-Earth philosophy of Odyssey. You cannot tell who is a public or private school teacher because all of the teachers share the same philosophical belief—to teach and enrich the lives of our students. Because the students can clearly see the teachers care about the kids and the other teachers, the positive and fun atmosphere permeates all activities from guest speakers to field trips and even our annual game of kick ball.”

“ When a child knows that you

care about them, they want

to come to school. And when

they come to school, great

teachers can teach them. And

when they do all these things,

they graduate on time, and

they go on and prepare for

their lives. They are hopeful.”

“If you are fortunate enough to have financial resources

available for philanthropy, writing the check is the easy part.

The work is in finding the best organizations with the strongest

administration and staff that match up with one’s own

passions and interests. I think we can all agree that Odyssey

meets the organizational criteria. I particularly appreciate

Odyssey’s focus on the middle third of students that have

such potential but may not have the opportunities to reach

that potential… Odyssey provides that with excellent courses,

committed teachers, and exposure to possibilities for their

future that would have been previously unimaginable.”

The costs of running Odyssey each summer are significant, but we are able to provide a best-in-class experience to our students each summer through the incredible generosity of corporations, found-ations, and individuals who donate financial resources, time, and in-kind support.

The Atlanta Public Schools provides many of the teachers for our program, suppor t in recruiting students, and significant transportation assistance.

The Westminster Schools hosts all Odyssey programs and provides in-kind donations in the form of facilities, technical assistance, and support services.

The Zeist Foundation and Dorsey Alston, Realtors, provided in-kind support in the form of meeting and event facilities.
