2018-2019 was a year of significant growth and accomplishment. The Annual Report continues BMCF’s tradition of sharing in-depth information about BMCF operations. Donations, operating budget, balance sheet, types of funds, scholarships and grants awarded, and other information is listed in detail. We deeply appreciate the generous gifts we receive to create funds to support charities and help the community, and the confidence of charities that have moved their endowments to us for investment management.

The Community Foundation’s work in 2019-2020 builds on the changes and momentum from last year. Among these developments are: 1) The new Charitable Gift Guide encouraged increased donations to local charities during the Holidays in 2018. In partnership with the Sustainable Living Center, BMCF produced a special newspaper supplement in the Walla Walla Union Bulletin that profiled 26 charities. This year, that special supplement was published Sunday, December 1st, and features 60 local charities. People are encouraged to give to the charities of their choice through the BMCF website.2) Diversity, Equity and Inclusion were the year-long focus of Board discussions and action. A study of BMCF diversity and inclusion practices and trends revealed improvements in many areas and lack of improvement in a few areas. This is an ongoing process as well as a commitment towards equity and inclusion of all peoples in operations, governance, scholarships and grantmaking. 3) Supporting a Complete Count - 2020 Census: The Board approved advocacy to encourage people to complete the upcoming 2020 Census. BMCF has been collaborating with a wide range of organizations to educate and encourage people to complete the Census in three counties – Walla Walla, Columbia and

Garfield. The Sherwood Trust established a fund at BMCF to support local efforts. 4) Improving the environment and recreation. Thanks to generous donors and the City of Walla Walla Parks and Recreation Department, Tom and Margo Scribner established a new endowment fund in 2018 to support trees in the city – to protect, maintain and plant trees in collaboration with the Department but without replacing any City funds. The generosity of Dave and Mary Gibson, in memory of Chuck Gibson, made possible the installation and equipping of two all-weather ping pong tables at Pioneer Park. Their bright colors and modern design are beautiful additions to the Park. The Community Foundation works closely with donors to design funds to meet their charitable goals. Please contact staff or ask a Board member about volunteer opportunities, becoming a donor or to learn more about the Community Foundation. We look forward to meeting you.

Warm Regards,

R E M E M B E R I N G P E T E P E E R YOne of Blue Mountain Community Foundation’s founders, Pete Peery, passed away on March 3, 2019. Along with other far-sighted members of the community, Pete recognized the need for a Community Foundation in the area and was instrumental in the creation of the Foundation. Pete’s generosity touched many people throughout the Walla Walla Valley during his life, and his legacy of giving will continue to serve others for generations to come.

Interview rooms for alleged criminal offenders are by nature sparse, unadorned and industrial looking. There is no art on the walls or comfortable chairs - for good reason. However, when victims of domestic violence are being interviewed in this stark and somewhat harsh environment it can be a further assault on their senses, preventing them from remembering and providing detailed information. Crime Victim advocate Chalese Rabidue wanted to change that and provide a comforting and comfortable environment in which to conduct these sensitive interviews.

And she is not alone. Last year, a few Whitman students who had volunteered for Crime Watch came up with the idea of ‘softening’ the space to create a more welcoming atmosphere. An a capella concert on campus raised some money, as did a small “Go-Fund-Me” project, ultimately raising $300.

With a grant from the BMCF Discretionary Grant Program, the new interview room is funded and the redesign is completed. The new room features a large landscape photograph and is painted in cheerier tones, with carpeting underfoot and upholstered chairs. A basket holds donated blankets. The victim and accompanying support person have a warmer, more relaxed space as they are being interviewed.

The Walla Walla Valley is home to many farms that can trace their roots back to the late 1800s. The Valley is rich in many ways, including the productivity of the land, whether wheat, vegetables, fruit or wine grapes. The Lamar Farm produces an extra gift, scholarships!

The Community Foundation’s Lamar Farm dates back to 1863. Through his will, James N. Lamar made sure that the farm remained in production, that the family name was kept alive, and that revenue from the farm supported scholarships for college students.

Inspired by the success of this arrangement, the Com-munity Foundation has begun a program encouraging gifts of agricultural land. Producers now have the op-tion of donating their land to the Community Founda-tion and dedicating its revenue to the good of the com-munity in perpetuity. The family’s name will continue

to be associated with the land, and the land remains in production. Revenue generated by the farm can be used to support the desired charitable cause of the donor. Tenant farmers may also be retained. The initiative’s oversight is by the BMCF Farm Committee.

Below: the Lamar Cabin, where James and his broth-er, Joseph, lived when they moved to the area from Weston, Missouri in 1863.
