"For this 70th edition of the Festival d’Aix which is Bernard Focroulle’s last festival, it is tempting to take stock of his achievements as Director in light of the greatest moments of opera that his mandate allowed the development of, whether

it be for example, Written on Skin by George Benjamin or Elektra as seen by Patrice Chéreau.

By his manner of bringing together talents and horizons, of bringing professionals and

amateurs closer together in the same desire for high standards, of creating a dialogue between

western music and oriental music, of reaching audiences without ever pandering to them, of inviting in order to enrich, it is not impossible that the Orfeo & Majnun in the long term will

become an even more crucial date."

L’Académie, centre for professional development, for experimentation and vocational integration for young artists, celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2018.

To celebrate its 20th anniversary, the Académie invited two emblematic personalities from its earliest days: the

French baritone, Stéphane Degout who gave his first cycle of masterclasses here and the pianist Alan Planès.

This residence called « The Art of the Recital » enabled six piano/voice duos to perfect the conception of their

recital programmes of French melody, each of which would be performed for the partners of the enoa European

network during the course of the 2018/2019 season. The traditional Mozart and chamber music residencies

completed this programme of professional development.

For the second year running, the cycle of workshops on the reflection on creation was opened, this year dealing

with the question of the representation of women in opera. The Creative Opera Workshops thus brought

together 10 women artists in the middle of their career as part of a workshop on the sharing of professional

tools, with the aim of strengthening their position in the sector. In parallel was being held the annual session of

the Opera Creation Workshop, a session of exchanges and of reflection on the opera of tomorrow.

As part of the symphonic session, 80 musicians from the Mediterranean Youth Orchestra (MYO) took part in

three concerts conducted by the conductors Kazushi Ono and Quentin Hindley. Led by the composer Fabrizio

Cassol, the MYO’s intercultural session enabled a dozen of these young artists to work on an un precedented

collective musical project presented as part of four concerts in Aix and on tour. The sessions for the Sinfonietta

from the opera Orfeo & Majnun an urban procession brought together 24 musicians from the MYO conducted

by Bassem Akiki.

Mediation and transmission are today at the heart of an artist’s professional development. Outreach skills from

the Académie, which are run notably by Mark Withers who is Artistic Director of participative projects with LSO

Discovery, has enabled 54 artists, singers and instrumentalists, to learn how to pass on their art and their artistic

practices to young and new audiences.

The Académie is celebrating the 20th anniversary of its creation and of perspectives during the course of three

major events: a photographic exhibition which goes back over the best moments of the Académie and of

the Festival, photographed by Vincent Beaume, musical workshops available for everyone and particularly for

the families and a festive Jam Session that gathered many artists from the Festival and the Académie. This

anniversary served as a reminder of the progress that was made and to present the challenges of tomorrow, in

images thanks to a specific video and in words with the edition of a special publication.

The 2017 HSBC Académie Laureates were revealed on the 12 October 2017 at the Philharmonie de Paris. They

then performed throughout the 2017/2018 season on tour in France and in 13 concerts at the Festival d’Aix.

The Académie is at the origin of the creation of two international networks.

enoa is a European network of opera academies whose aim is to help vocational integration, vocational mobility,

and the creation of new opera projects for young European artists. This summer the Académie received 18

artists recommended by members of the network and 3 of its residencies: Opera Creation Workshops, Women

Creators of Opera and The Art of the Recital all benefitted from the support of enoa. On the occasion of

the quarterly meeting of the enoa network, the Festival d’Aix hosted its 12 partners the 2 and 3 July. The

endorsement of a new manifesto which would guide the development of the next enoa programme was at the

heart of the discussions. This summer meeting also marked the end of Bernard Focroulle’s mandate at the Head

of the network, of which the presidency will be taken over by Pierre Audi as early as September 2018.

The Medinea network assembles more than twenty cultural organisations from the Euro-Mediterranean region,

supporting the vocational integration of young Mediterranean musicians by developing intercultural projects

promoting dialogue, transmission and mobility within the Mediterranean. Thanks to the recent support of

creative Europe as part of the European Year of Cultural Heritage 2018, Medinea this year accompanied the

Outreach skills workshop of the Académie in Aix and a Session of intercultural creation of the MYO, “outside

the walls” in Nuoro, (Italy).

Orfeo & Majnun: a major European artistic and participatory project

In 2018 the Festival d’Aix hosted the French premiere of Orfeo & Majnun, a

coproduction with seven European partners in which the participation of amateurs

was at the heart of the creative process. It took place in two phases: PARADE[S], a

great festive urban procession, followed by a free outdoor opera. In all, this original

project brought together over 10,000 people of which more than 1,500 participants

were amateurs from the audience of Passerelles.

Orfeo & Majnun is an encounter between the Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice with the Persian legend of

Layla and Majnun, two of the greatest love stories from the west and the orient. Throughout the year, numerous

introductory and artistic practice workshops were organised by Passerelles for participants of all ages and from

all social backgrounds in order to take the project wholly into their possession.

Following these explorations, PARADE[S] intervened in order to unite the propositions of the partners of

Passerelles under the artistic coordination of Airan Berg and of Passerelles: about thirty performances,

installations and artistic workshops were put into place in order to give rhythm to the afternoons before the

final procession on the cours Mirabeau, which was coordinated by Raphaël Imbert, Marion Rampal (Cie Nine

Spirit), Alexandra Satger and the artists from the Compagnie Rara Woulib (Choir of Work Songs). This event

brought together 2,500 people including 300 amateur musicians and singers.

Elsewhere, animals occupied an important place in this project: their inventor, Roger Titley, trained around

twenty students and social mediators to accompany the audience in the creation and the actioning of the

creatures in preparation for the urban procession.

Around 200 amateur choristers from the region – including the Ibn Zaydoun Choir made up the multicultural

choir for the opera, which was prepared by Philippe Franceschi before being conducted by Bassem Akiki on

8th July.

Orfeo & Majnun is on the programme of Marseille-Provence 2018 – Quel Amour ! (MP2018). To celebrate its

launch in February, The Festival d’Aix has deployed a lot of musical surprises as the apparition of the Choir of

the Work Songs in Aix on the theme of love. On Sunday 8th April, the Festival d'Aix also teamed up with the

Arlesian Parade Drôle de Carnaval - Un Amour de Parade on the theme of Orfeo & Majnun.

Orfeo & Majnun, is also the creation of a participatory digital platform enabling an exploration of the creative

process. Around twenty articles, photos and videos go back over the odyssey of this exceptional creation at

the Festival d’Aix: orfeoandmajnun.eu.

Meet the audiences with Passerelles

By developing educational and socio-artistic projects throughout the region, the

Passerelles team of the Festival d’Aix, reaches out to meet a large range of audiences

– young, families, non-specialised and fragile – enabling them to live and to discover

the world of opera.

In 2018, Passerelles celebrated its tenth anniversary! Almost 5,000 participants were associated with the

Passerelles’ projects this year, in relation with a hundred educational establishments (schools, universities) as

well as social institutions and associations.

Passerelles was deeply involved at the heart of the Orfeo & Majnun project. More than 1,500 amateur

participants from the Passerelles’ public were involved in this project of which more than 1,200 people for

the urban procession and almost 200 amateur choristers to make up the opera choir. The Ibn Zaydoun Choir,

conducted by Moneim Adwan (the composer of the Arabian part of the libretto of Orfeo & Majnun) also joined

the choir of the opera. It appeared in other events on the 2018 programme such as La Nuit Antigone, Les Voix

de Silvacane and the concert SOS Méditerranée.

Passerelles also pursued its public awareness programme with the aim of introducing opera to the greatest

number of people: discovery programmes about the opera, amateur artistic practices, artistic encounters

such as the cine-concert at the Cité de la Savine in July together with the MYO and the cinema Alhambra in

Marseille. To end these programmes, more than 5,000 people attended a pre-dress rehearsal of one of the

2018 productions!

2018 was also the first edition of the Sets and Costumes Workshop Open Days at Venelles. More than 300

participants - young apprentices, youth and adults in vocational integration – were able to discover a range of

professions related to the performing arts.

Finally, around 500 young people who were under thirty years of age attended the first night of a 2018

production in exceptional conditions as part of the Opéra ON Programme.

The Festival d’Aix in the world

Whilst being solidly anchored in its own region, the Festival d’Aix‘s influence extends all over

the world.

Indeed, the Festival d’Aix has a world-wide reputation and functions on all levels, regional,

through the loyal attachment of the local audience and through the close bond developed

with the public authorities from year to year; then on a national level and international level

through new collaborations with cultural institutions and through the tours and its productions.

By attracting an ever more varied and numerous audiences, the free opera projections within

the region and abroad also contribute to the Festival’s influence.

PARTNERSHIPS

The signing of an historic triennial partnership with the Adelaide Festival in Australia includes opera co-productions with

the Festival d’Aix as early as 2019.

The collaboration with the Bolchoï is to be reinforced with:

The first Russian performance of Alcina (2015) by Handel.

The co-production of Dido and Aeneas (2018) by Purcell.

COPRODUCTIONS AND TOURS

The constantly renewed attraction of the operas produced by the Festival d’Aix on national and international stages has

been confirmed with 17 co-producers committed on the 2018 productions.

A circulation of the operas of the Festival in the world through numerous revivals by the co-producers amongst whom are:

The Rake’s Progress (2017) by Stravinsky at the Dutch National Opera

Pinocchio (2017) by Phillipe Boesmans at the Opéra national de Bordeaux

Pelléas et Mélisande (2016) by Debussy at the Polish National Opera - Teatr Wielki

In 2018 about ten productions travelled the globe for around fifty performances. The tours of past productions continue,

and amongst them are :

Winterreise (2014) by Schubert at the Elbe Philharmonic in Hamburg

A Midsummer Night’s Dream (2015) by Britten at the English National Opera and in 2019 at the Philadelphia Opera, The

Magic Flute (2009) by Mozart at the New National Theatre in Tokyo

Le Monstre du Labyrinthe (2015) by Jonathan Dove at the Philharmonie de Paris

PROJECTIONS

The development of free projections on a wide screen with Ariadne auf Naxos by Strauss et Dido and Aeneas by Purcell in

24 towns and villages of the PACA region, with the support of the Orange Foundation, the CIC Lyonnaise de Banque and in

partnership with Arte. Abroad, 11 countries have organised projections of past productions produced by the Festival d’Aix,

which represent around sixty projections in all.

EncountersCULTURE NUM

With the theme of the 2018 edition of Culture Num «Finding utopia in the digital », this edition proposed to everybody an anticipatory

workshop conceived by The Camp with the purpose of imagining and sharing scenarios of a digital society in which art and the

form of opera would exist in support of the human, by reinforcing connections and by creating new forms of solidarity and sharing.

With the support of Audiens.

AIX-EN-PROVENCE ECONOMIC FORUM

On the occasion of its 70th anniversary, the Festival d’Aix hosted the 18th edition of the Aix-en-Provence Economic Forum

organised by the Cercle des économistes. This international event attracted a large public together with 230 contributors

from all over the world speaking on the question of the Metamorphosis of the world.

Professional MeetingsNATIONAL ENCOUNTERS ACCORD MAJEUR

Because the French model of diversity is not that of communitarianism, the Accord Majeur National Meetings which took

place from 10 July in Aix were an opportunity to testify to the commitment of artists and professionals to contribute to a

« better life together » and define the boundaries of a renewed audience policy.

ENOA

On the occasion of the three-monthly meetings of the enoa network (European network of opera academies), organised by

each member of the institution in turn, the Festival d’Aix hosted its 12 partners the 2 and 3 July. The artistic content of the

activities of the next two years as well as the orientations which will guide the elaboration of next programme supported

by enoa were at the heart of these discussions. This summer meeting also marked the end of Bernard Focroulle’s mandate

at the head of the network, of which the presidency was taken over by Pierre Audi in September 2018.

MEDINEA

From 18 to 20 July, the Medinea Meetings brought together around twenty Euro-Mediterranean cultural institutions to talk

about the founding principles and the forthcoming issues for this network by adopting a common programme. The artistic

programme received the support of Europe Creative and Erasmus+.

Opera Play AppLaunched in January 2018, Opera Play is an amusing new educational application from the Festival d’Aix-en-Provence

based on exploring the voice and operatic singing. Conceived and produced by Sonic Solveig with the DRAC Provence-

Alpes-Côte d’Azur, it has been downloaded more than 1,000 times on Google Play and 1,150 times on Apple Store.

BroadcastsAll the operas of the 2018 edition were broadcast live on Arte, France Télévisions, Mezzo or on streaming on Arte Concert,

CultureBox and Opera Vision.

Fauteuils d’orchestre, the television programme presented by Anne Sinclair and broadcast on prime time the 4 July on

France 3, celebrated the 70th anniversary of the Festival d’Aix and was watched by some 728,000 viewers. More than 20

hours of radio programmes on France Musique were recorded at the Festival d’Aix including 30 live programmes from Aix

with Clément Rochefort and Frédéric Lodéon. 30 31

The teams

Composed of around fifty permanent salaried staff, the Festival’s teams are organised into six

principle departments which are divided up between the sites in Aix-en-Provence, in Venelles

and in Paris.

The chart below illustrates one of the Festival’s particularities, that is to say the great variability of its manpower, which

does not cease to grow from September to July, to reach almost 800 people by July 2018, including both the permanent

administrative staff, the staff back-ups on temporary contracts (CDD), the technicians and artists who are engaged

individually. To this figure, must be added the artists and ensembles who are invited (choirs and orchestras: about 270

people) and more than 260 young artists at the heart of the Académie and the Mediterranean Youth Orchestra. The import

number of technicians and artists recruited throughout the year is also due to the busy activity of the tours and the work

carried out in the workshops.

Sustainable development100% of the sets - 100% eco-designed

In order to reduce the volume of its waste material and by modifying their nature, with the aim of encouraging their

reclamation, recycling and re-use, the Festival d’Aix initiated as early as 2014 a transversal and multisectoral reflection in

support of responsible practices in the cultural sector. By anticipating the end of a set’s life at the moment of its conception,

the Festival d’Aix succeeded in 2018, after three years of tests on four sets (Alcina, The Entfürung Aus dem Serail, Così fan

tutte and Carmen) to build 100% of its sets in a 100% eco-designed manner.

In January 2018, The Festival d’Aix organised in Paris at the Ministry of Culture its fourth Labo dedicated to the eco-

conception of sets, in the presence of 14 cultural sector actors. This Labo enabled the emergence of projects such as

material resource centres, a collaborative platform, a website and the adaptation of a “help tool” to assist decision-making,

all of which which will allow the dissemination of practices of the eco-conception for theatre sets. A fifth Labo took place

in June of the same year at the workshops of the Festival d’Aix- with local actors in preparation for a territorial network

and the publication of a methodological handbook.

The Festival d’Aix is a founding member of the collective COFEES (Collective union of Eco-responsible Festivals in Provence-

Alpes-Côte d’Azur ) which is supported by ADME and the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region.
