LEADERSHIP FOR SOCIAL CHANGETHE YEAR IN REVIEWWithin an exciting year of growth and new opportunities, the highlight of 2016 was the 3,200 diverse women who were new to the Women’s Centre, or returning after a period away. They came to access services, to learn new things, to connect with others, to volunteer and to build an inclusive community.

With 8,049 individual women connecting with the Centre in 2016, we provided more basic needs assistance and services than ever before, ran 350 workshops, expanded our work on social policy issues and girls programming and had 754 active volunteers doing incredible work at the Centre and in the community.

Demand for basic needs assistance and services continued to grow and in response we provided more women and their families with food, personal care items and referrals to other community agencies such as the food bank and Project Warmth. We offered three additional legal clinics per month and added immigration law to the family and non-family clinics we have always offered. We completed 771 tax returns and expanded our program to include assistance with the benefits navigator program that shows women which government programs they qualify for.

We completed a very successful community development project funded by The Calgary Foundation which enabled us to build strong connections in our geographic neighbourhoods, with social issues collaborators and women’s groups. We responded to community, safety and leadership issues. New funding from City of Calgary FCSS will allow us to maintain and build on this critical work.

We continued to apply a gender lens to public policy and work on poverty reduction initiatives.

We worked on the community coalition which successfully advocated with the City to provide low income transit passes and in a collaboration to map the complexity of the early learning and child care system in Calgary. We increased our social issues community education work with workshops, feminist and girls’ issues walks, and monthly discussion groups and readings. Subscribers to our monthly social issues readings doubled.

754 volunteers provided services, organized and facilitated workshops, ran groups, wrote position statements, acted as hosts, ushered football games and did so much more. In response to the 427 volunteers new to the Centre in 2016, we expanded our volunteer opportunities, developed new training and adapted our core training to accommodate the increased numbers in each session.

And, thanks in part to an increased number of FCSS-funded staff, we did significant groundwork on new and expanded programs launched in the first quarter of 2017. We now have on-site child minding for some of our programs and workshops, a monthly workshop and discussion series on the environment and gender lens, have participated in a leadership training day for women interested in being candidates in the next civic election, are expanding our girls programming to include ages 10 to 17, and have launched a Women’s Centre Artist in Residence program to help us celebrate our 20th anniversary year.

None of this would of course be possible without incredible support from our major funders FCSS and United Way of Calgary, and 857 individual donors, community groups, foundations and businesses. You helped us build a thriving community that is making a difference.

In 2016, we collected input from 2,230 women - volunteers, community members, and staff - to inform our work.
